Mail folder is 400GB overnight. Even after cleanup is back to 100GB
Hello,
My Mail folder became 400GB+ overnight, without any intervention or setting changes (today my comp just gave a warning that I have 50MB left of my 1TB HD!?! After looking at all the folders, I saw that Mail was eating up all that space)
I went in and deleted old mail, junk, and trash manually, and that took my mail back to 15GB. Now, a few hours later I notice it's back to 100GB and growing. What can it be? I'm not too clear what the best settings are: pop or imap, since I use 3 different email accounts, and check mail from various computers and my iphone. Please advise as to what settings are best, and what is causing the Mail folder to grow so large? (Is it downloading old messages? Spam?)
Thank you.
On any IMAP account, in Mail Preferences/Accounts/Advanced what is your selection with regard to Keep copies of messages (and attachments) for Offline viewing?

Mail application does not respond even after forcing quit over and over
My mail application is not responding. I have forced quit at least 5 times and I still get the beach ball. This just started happening 2 days ago and now I can't access my mail at all.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -
I am not recieving messages from a specific sender. I have added to my contacts, but nothing is recieved.
Tell us more.
Was it once working and then failed, or has it never worked?
When you try to send mail, do you get an error message, or does the message just sit in the outbox?
What steps have you already take to resolve this, and what results have you achieved?
For example, did you check with bellnet.ca administrators or knowledgebase to see what the proper outbound SMTP server address and settings are, then verify the contents of Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > {bellnetaccount} > Account > Advanced > Mail > Outgoing Mail Server > SMTP > Primary Server > {servername} match that?
(Yes, those settings are buried deep and hard to find at this point. It would have been easier to set them on the initial creation of the account.) -
Since the update of Mavericks my Gmail account bugs a lot ! (also with the update for Gmail).
I tried to "re-build" the mail box, since it didn't work. And since I did this my Gmail box is empty, like I have no emails... I tried to sync but nothing happens.. I deleted and put again the account but nothing...
Can anybody help me with this?
Thanks a lot !There is an update available for Mail/Mavericks. Did you try updating.

Since I installed 7.0.1, it has been nothing but trouble. It locks up frequently. Menu and add-on toolbar does not always load. FEBE does not recognize any previous backup, and wants to backup every time Firefox is opened, every time, even if I open multiple windows. The only way I could stop the FEBE popup was to schedule it to backup on browser shutdown or start up. Any scheduled option, including NO SCHEDULED BACKUP makes no difference. As soon as I open the browser the FEBE backup popup, pops up. I want a previous version back.
You can delete the files extensions.* (extensions.rdf, extensions.cache, extensions.ini, extensions.sqlite) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox [[Profiles|profile folder]] to reset the extensions registry. New files will be created when required.
See "Corrupt extension files": http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions
If you see disabled extensions that are not compatible on the next start in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the "Find Updates" button to do a compatibility check.
You may also need to "Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults" on the [[Safe mode]] start window. -
I'm trying to delete an album titles pictures from my photos album but can't work out how to do it. I've tried auto back up and erase which deletes other albums but not the photo album. Even selecting individual photos and selecting edit does nothing. Any tips how to erase this album would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Cannot get G Mail to accept my password, even after changing it. Cannot get on-line to send or retrieve messages. Help? Roger1289
Hi Roger,
Does gMail's WebMail work with the same login & password?
Here are two steps that have come in handy in related situations
1) login to gmail on your computer or device via a web browser
2) once logged in successfully, go to this URL to unlock:

Library/mail folder storage very large
Background: Using an IMAP account, I switched from Outlook Express (under VM Ware on same MacBook) to Apple Mail because I wanted better archive control (generic .mbox versus proprietary MS .dbx archive format) and to get past the OE 2gb message file limitation. As an Attorney, I download every message and attachment to local drive and backup and archive.
Q1: Gmail says I am using 6.1gb out of 7.6gb with 8,146 "All Mail" messages. Apple Mail "Account Info" says I am using 6.1gb out of 7.4gb (close enough), BUT counts 14,392 messages at the same time. Why the difference in message counts?
Q2: "Get Info" for Users/.../library/Mail reports 13.24 gb, over DOUBLE the actual storage for all the messages and attachments. Why the increased hard drive space?
Q3: Mail Preferences "Accounts/Advanced" has a setting for "Compact mailboxes automatically" which is selected and greyed out so that I cannot change it. In theory this sounds good, BUT I am finding that Apple's documentation for Mail is very poor and imprecise, and I do not know what Apple "compact" actually does. In other email programs, "compact" can actually strip the message and leave only the tracking and Subject data, which I do not want to do.
What is actually happening in "compact", and why can't I changed it?
NOTE: when I setup Apple Mail, I was not sure exactly what some of the Preferences should be to get the same end result as with Outlook Express. I told Mail to sync with Gmail and let it download ALL messages and attachments, which I think it did. When I noticed the message count discrepency, I checked to see if anything was missing, but found not evidence of loss. I did a quick lookup on "Rebuild" and gave it a try. It took all night at 3megs DSL download speed and it appears from the data storage size that everything is downloaded, even thought the message counts differ. I do not know if "Rebuild" first makes a "Copy" and then duplicates the message store, and then deletes the "Copy" as cleanup, OR if it duplicates the existing data files. I have not found any duplication in the files or in the messages, but this may explain the doubling from 6.1gb to 13.24gb. Any ideas what is happening?shonamelissa wrote:
Could you please tell me if MailAccounts.plist will hold all my IMAP messages if I back it up?
No, it will not, it's only a 2-byte file, almost nothing. That file only contains settings about your mail accounts, not the contents of the accounts.
Your mail messages are in the Library/Mail folder. If you "keep copies of messages for offline viewing" with IMAP, complete messages and attachments will be stored in that Mail folder. You can tell by looking at how the file size of that folder grows and grows, and also by digging into that folder and looking inside the account subfolders. Messages are stored as RTF files that you can open in TextEdit or Word, so that is another way to verify that the messages are indeed being stored locally as well as on the server.
To completely back up your Mail messages and configuration, you should back up the Mail folder with all your messages (after making sure you are keeping local copies), MailAccounts.plist for your account prefs, and com.apple.mail.plist for other preferences.
I don't really worry about it because both my Time Machine and clone backups are of the entire Mac. Mail is naturally included.
I think the tech note you were reading might be assuming that "Keep Copies of Messages..." is off, because that's the default. But if you turn it on, then sure you can back up the local copies of messages that are there. After you give Mail a little time to cache them all. -
Mail keeps crashing after SL install, even after Mail folder moved to trash
I have also just upgraded to 10.6 and Mail crashes every time on launch. In my case, even moving the Mail folder in Library to trash has not worked. Every time I do this Mail regenerates the folder with all the old information, which I suspect is where the problem lies: I have tried Mail with a new user and it works.
How do I delete the Mail account completely (I cannot open Mail) to try and start from scratch?
Note: I already had a functional exchange account set up before the upgrade to SL, and left it there during the upgrade. Might Mail be crashing now because it is trying to use the previous settings? Is it related to this :

My mac mail on just keeps sending the same messages even after deleted and shows thousands of emails supposed to be coming in
If you have a backup, you can restore the e-mails. Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Library/Mail/V2.

After Drive Replacement, iTunes Points To Wrong Folder Even After Adjusting Settings
I moved my music to a new hard drive. I then adjusted settings within iTunes to "point" to the folder on the new drive. The folder name is identical as are all the files within it. I did this a few months back and had no issues once iTunes "located" my files. All files played, playlists remained intact. This time however only a small portion of my files successfully "located" and the remaining 75% are unplayable. When "shown in finder", the unplayable tracks point to a completely random folder within my mail folder of obviously non-music files. I've been searching for weeks how to fix this to no avail. I definitely do not want to lose my playlists, play counts, etc. so starting from scratch with iTunes is not an option for me. Please advise how to fix this very odd issue!
iMac 3.4 Ghz i7
OSX 10.8.5
iTunes 12.0.1.26 (just updated)To resolve this we will need details. I don't know exactly what is where. Even though it "worked last time" I see people post with that and almost invariably there is something different in the scenario this time.
The iTunes application alone has no idea where media files are. You could drag all the media folders you like to the Media folder and it won't know. You could "point" iTunes to that folder in preferences and it still will never look there. iTunes knows where files are because as you add them to iTunes it puts them in the Media folder and makes a note in that .itl file where the files are located. When you try to play a track iTunes looks up in the .itl file which media file it should try to play when you request the track and goes to that location to play the file. If there file isn't there you get ! You have to mend the links one by one, or iTunes might try, based on you repairing links. to repair other links, but it doesn't usually work that way and is only partly successful at times (as we have already discussed). If you have ever walked into a store and see an empty shelf but their web site says they have 3 in stock and the sales person says all their stock is out on the shelf, iTunes is like that.
Here's a bunch of links on how iTunes works. As you can see, an entire library is a whole bunch of files and support folders working in concert and when they get split up iTunes starts misbehaving.

Podcasts Still in Folder Even After Deleting
Hi, I'm having a problem with itunes retaining podcasts, even after I delete them. I always click the option "Move to Recycle Bin," but a recent cruise through my itunes folder under My Music revealed that many of the supposedly deleted podcasts are still there. This has happened several times, and it gets to the point where I run out of hard drive space if I don't go to the folder and delete the old podcasts. I understand that this should only happen if I click on "Keep Files," so why is this happening even though I tell it to delete the episodes? It seems to be just random ones, too, with no rhyme or reason to whether it decides to keep an episode I told it to delete or not. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks.
"Move to Recycle Bin" doesn't work if the file is active; that is, if you have just finished listening to it and it is still the active track in iTunes with the little speaker icon next to it. Start to play something else, then go back and delete it. That's probably what's happening.
A less likely reason is that you had moved the podcast file from where iTunes deposited it. ITunes can only erase files that are in the +iTunes Music+ folder to begin with. So if you downloaded the file in iTunes the moved it, or (this just occured to me) got the file from some other means and imported it to iTunes without saving it to the +iTunes Music+ folder, iTunes won't move it to the RB. -

Mail & Safari crash repeatedly even after erase 10.6.7
I came back to the Mac to get away from Windows issues but still need to run Windows. So running Windows 7 64 bit in bootcamp & using that as a Virtual Machine in Parallels 5. Bought the macBookPro 13 in April 2010. Was running fine until Feb 19, 2011. On that day, Pages crashed, going from Pages to desktop to blue screen. Over a week it & Safari got worse with repeated crashes so that it got so I wasn't even able to boot.
AppleCare & Genius bar have tried various solutions leading up to & including 2 erases--the 2nd time not even restoring much at all.
Did not even have mail set up until after the erases. All I have on the Mac side since the erases is iLife & iWork & then later reinstalled Parallels. But the crashes happened before installing Parallels. Safari & Pages crashed before erases. Since it has been Safari, mail & finder & possibly Pages & Numbers-can't remember.
Even after the erase these have continued intermittently. Have been working in Bootcamp lately since I have Outlook there & did taxes in Turbotax Windows. It has been pretty stable.
The mac has also had trouble booting & had finder crashes so it seems to be mostly the various mac apps, but not just 1 of them. Right now Safari seems to be working ok & hopefully will let me post this. But other times it crashes & then it may work fine for several hours.
Anything known that happened around Feb 19 that could lead to this?
When did 10.6.7 come out? There were some reports on the Parallels forums of possible conflicts between that & Parallels, although I think that was parallels 6 & I'm running Parallels 5.
Most of the crash reports seem to say BAD_ACCESS_SIGEV (or something like that)
& the thread is 0. This seems to be true whether Safari or Mail. Can't remember if Pages or Numbers have crashed but I haven't used them much.
I'm told Macs don't get viruses or malware, but then someone said maybe they do.
So far no reason has been found for this but the next step Genius bar is going to do is replace logic board, memory & HD. But hardware tests hadn't shown anything.
So just wondering if there might be any other possible explanations that maybe should be explored. Genius bar is taking good care of me, but this is really disrupting use of Mac & really blindsided me since my memories of Macs (& what my brother confirmed has been true with their macs) is they just work.
So before I take it in for what is hoped will fix it, but really apparently that is not known, wondering if there might be something else to look at.
Also wondering if anything on Windows side could affect the mac? I have proprietary co software in bootcamp as well as Outlook 2007 that I sync to winmob phone for biz.
But the crashes started up again after the erase before installing parallels. Bootcamp has mostly been stable although I did have 2 windows blue screens shortly after the erase.
Again, any help or suggestions would be appreciated to help get this back to what I expect from a Mac. Its also embarrassing in an office of Windows users to be having all these problems on my Mac.
