Mail Folder turned grey and emails have disappeared!

I’ve got a problem with a folder in mail 2.1.3 whereby the folder (which contained a number of subfolders, each in turn containing a fair few emails) has turned grey and the emails seem to have disappeared.
All I did was to try and rename the main folder, but got a message saying the folder could not be renamed, and instead a new folder was created. This was when the original folder turned grey?? The dub folder structure remained intact but all the messages from all the folders have disappeared.
I’ve looked at what should be the folder contents in user/username/library/mail/mailboxes/THEFOLDER and can see that the subfolders and the messages are there but they simply dont show up in mail.
Can anyone tell me how to reinstate the messages in the folders, and maybe why this has happened?
Thanks in advance.
Phil

Perhaps we just lost the custom icon for that folder, you can navigate to it in the Finder, do a Get info on it and change the icon if you wish.
What is the best way to see if there is a potential problem with the disk?
We secretly did one wth the Safe Boot already, 1st thing it does is check & try to repair the disk.
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
I consider DiskWarrior from Alsoft the best tool for disks, get the CD/DVD...

  • I changed my outgoing pop settings and my stored emails have disappeared, how do I recover them, please?

I am using the Mail app on my iMac in OS Yosemite 10.10.2. My talk talk.net account would not let me send emails, so I changed the  port setting from 110 to 25 and when I went back into my email box all but today's emails have disappeared. How do I recover them, please?

Now I cannot access these photos.
You need to update to iPhoto 9.6.1. Only that is fully compatible with MacOS X 10.10.3.
You can no longer buy iPhoto from the App Store anywhere, and also not update it from the "Updates" tab of the App Store. You can however reinstall it, if it is showing among your Purchases at the App Store and associated with your AppleID.
Sign into the App Store and look at the Purchases tab.  If you do not see iPhoto there, try to unhide your Purchases as described on this page:   Hide and unhide purchases in the Mac App Store - Apple Support
If iPhoto shows on your Purchases tab, reinstall as described in this User Tip:
Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS... | Apple Support Communities
The main idea is to move the incompatible iPhoto app to the Trash, so Spotlight does not see it as installed, reload the App Store by pressing ⌘R, and then to try to download again from the App Store - from your Purchases tab, not from the main page, since you can neither buy iPhoto nor update it, but you can reinstall, if your AppleID is associated with it.
So move iPhoto to the Trash (don't empty the Trash), relaunch the App Store. The button to the right if iPhoto should change to Install on the "Purchases" tab.
Alternately, you could migrate your iPhoto library to the new Photos.app.
When you launch Photos, it will try to migrate your iphoto Library, if it can find the library.  Where is your iPhoto Library stored? If it is in your Pictures folder, simply drag the iPhoto Library to the Phots icon in your Dock to migrate it to Photos.
Photos will make a migrated copy, so you still can use your iPhoto Library with iPhoto.

My computer is running slow after Yosemite install -but in the Mail program, when I open an email and then open the attachment -all is good -when I close the attachment the Mail program goes away, and I have to reopen it in my Dock -every time.

I tried this, but no luck. I went to Previous System>Users. There is nothing inside the "Users" folder, so I hit a dead end.
I can find my new e-mails -- those that came in since I re-installed the system -- in my NEW system (which I did to see if I was correctly understanding the advice), by going to Users>Home>Library>Mail>POP account name>Inbox.
Let me add a new question: I am running PhotoShop C3. It opens OK, and I can use it, but when it opens I get this message: "One or more files for Adobe Application Support folder are missing. Please re-run the PhotoShop installer."
I don't like re-installing working programs if I can avoid it, because it always seems to lead to other issues. Any idea what files are missing, and where it/they might be in the Previous System folder?
    thanks

  • I have an Iphone 4 with IOS 6 and my emails have disappeared.  I also have a very slow reaction time to my touch screen.

I have an Iphone 4 with IOS 6 and my emails have disappeared.  I also have a very slow reaction time to my touch screen. Help!

    Hello there, parihargs1.
To troubleshoot display brightness issues the following article provides 2 key steps:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
    Of note is the following:
Display has no backlight or dark screen
Toggle the ringer switch to see if the unit vibrates. If it does, it could be that iPhone is getting power, but is not displaying any image.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
While connected to the iPhone charger, try to reset the iPhone.
If the low-battery screen appears, charge the iPhone.
Display does not adjust brightness automatically
The ambient light sensor brightens the display when using the iPhone in brightly lit environments, and dims the display in low light. To test this sensor, do the following:
If the iPhone is in a protective case, remove it from the case. If there is a protective film on the display, remove the film.
Verify that the Auto-Brightness setting (Settings > Brightness and Wallpaper) is set to ON, and that the Brightness level is set near the middle of the slider.
Press the Home button to return to the Home screen and then press the Sleep/Wake button to lock the iPhone.
In a bright environment, cover the top third of the iPhone to block the light, then press the Sleep/Wake button or the Home button to wake the phone. Slide the slider to unlock the phone.
Notice the brightness of the screen and application icons; they should be somewhat dimmed.
Remove the cover from the top of the display and in a few moments the display should get brighter.
If these steps do not resolve your issue please refer to the "Issue not resolved" section for your next step.
Thansk for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro D.

  • I recently changed from a Mac Pro to an iMac. A large chunk of emails have disappeared. Time Machine is no help. Any ideas as to how I can get them back?

I recently changed from a Mac Pro to an iMac. Despite using Migration Assistant, a large chunk of my recent emails and nearly all of my wife's emails have disappeared in transit. Strangely, emails from my distant past are still there. Time Machine is no help; the messages may be on my backup disc but they're behind an invisible  icon. Any ideas as to how I can get them back?

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the text on the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is corrupt and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

Ok Apple users...Is there a way to delete e-mails on my Mac and not have to delete the same e-mails on my iPhone, and iPad...and vise-versa. I have the Cloud, and thought that everything would sync all of the time. If you know of a setting I need to adjust, please let me know.

Are you referring to @mac.com, @me.com or @icloud.com emails? Or some other email providers emails?
If the former, it should do that automatically. If the latter, no. iCloud does not (nor is it supposed to) sync non-Apple provided emails.

After upgrading to the latest IOS version 7.1, in mail on ipad, if I select more than 5 mail items to delete the  mail software package  crashes and I have to relaunch mail? Anyone else noticed this?

I haven't encountered this problem on my iPad Air but this is what I usually do when Mail misbehaves.
Quit the Mail app like I describe then reset the iPad.
Double click the Home button to show the screen with running and recently used apps. Each app icon will have a sample page above it. Flick up on the page (not the app icon) and the page will fly away and the app icon will disappear. This quits that app. Then reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart.

  • Help! My mac turns grey and i cannot sign in. It said "your start up disc is full".

My child incidently put her itumes to my macbook air. It seems it the macbook is very full. When we turn it on, it stated " your start up disc is full". We cannot delete files / programs to make more spaces because i cannot even sign in. The monitor turns grey and freeze after I click "sign in". Help me, please.... Thank you very much for your kind attention and help.

    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.

  • Update 10.1 to 10.4X and screen turned grey and enlarged?

Help. I update to OS10.4.3 from 10.1 and the screen turned grey and unclear and all icons are much larger. Tried system preferences but display only gives me the option of 640X480 and no other options. Went to universal acess and set to black on white, no grey, zoom off. In universal acess the screen is too large so I don't know if there is a button on the bottom I can't get to. I also tried a different monitor but the picture is the same. Turned off extensions on restart and reloaded OS again but no change.
I'd appreciate any help at all!

    Hi Dr.P,
unfortunately Tiger does not support a direct upgrade from 10.1.x to 10.4.x. Although there are one or two anecdotical reports of successfull upgrades the vaste majority of users who tried this reported major problems.
There are 2 possibilities to get from 10.1.x to 10.4.x:
    1. Perform and Erase&Install: Make sure you have a complete backup since the Erase&Install will completely wipe your hard disk!
    2. Get a cheap copy of 10.2.x or 10.3.x, upgrade to this and then upgrade to 10.4.x
Personally I would choose option 1.
In case you choose the second option I suggest you follow this procedure for the upgrade to 10.4.x: 10.4 Tiger Upgrade: Decision tree+Checklist.
In any case, make sure you have the retail full instaall version of Tiger. You cannot use hardwware specific disks that shipped with another computer!

I just backed up my 3gs iphone using itunes.  All my photos and contacts have disappeared from my phone.  I am unable to locate them on my computer.  HELP!!!

OK, I understand.  Try this ... it's much safer.  It will simply restore your backup, but not do anything to your iOS:
While your iPhone is plugged in to iTunes, right click on the iPhone icon on the left side of the iTunes display.
Choose "Restore from backup ..." from the pop-up menu that appears.
Again, what this will do is place that backup back on your iPhone without changing iOS.  So you should be very confident in the backup contents before doing this.
