MAIL FORCE QUIT ONLY

Can only close mail with force quit when closing down

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
          Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder—not just its contents—to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
          Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Mail.app nonstop checks mailserver and loads CPU, force quit only.

    Hello
My mail.app turned useless. It does not stop checking my exchange server for mails (little flower weel turns and turns), thereby it cranks up its cpu usage to 80%. I can then only quit mail by force quitting it. Everytime I start mail.app, the same thing happens. I can simply not use it anymore. I already deleted all mail accounts and manually deleted the Mail folder (~/Library/Mail/). As soon as I added the exchange mail account, the problem was back. At the same time that the mail.app started to cause that problem a process called AddressBookSourceSync regularly starts to heat up my cpu (80% and more) . On my iOS devices the exchange account works flawlessly. Does anybody have an idea what could cause this behavior? Thank you very much!
    Best regards,
    Silvan

Going to use Postbox email client until this gets resolved. I saw a lot of possible solutions on google but none of them worked.
    I don't use mobile me
    I use gmail pop
so this is just mail.app setup to use gmail's pop servers. i had about 20k email messages in deleted and sent folders that I deleted. just in case it was because I had a large number of emails.
I tried resetting the sync history.
**** this is ruining my perfect image I have of apple products.

  • Mail Force Quite

Every time I use Mail I have to force quit due to hanging (Beachball)  e.g  when I try to to opem 'Preferences'  t I assume I need to re-download the Mail App but do not know hown to do this.  Any help appreciated     Snow Leopard

Hardon?  Really? Good lord.  I mean, I really like Macs, too, but...
You could try deleting the Mail preferences files - a common troubleshooting step.
(Force) Quit(e) Mail. Select "Go to Folder... " in Finder Go menu. Paste in "~/Library/Preferences"  (not the quotes, including the tilde). Move all "com.apple.mail..." to the trash. Restart Mail.
This might not help, but it's worth a try.

  • Mail unexpectedly quits when trying to get mail

Please help me, the person at the genius bar was useless. My mail unexpectedly quits only when trying to get mail. I have repaired permissions, and I did an archive reinstall (at the recommendation of the genius). Nothing I seem to do works, even when I removed the envelop index and started mail after getting re setup it just crashed again.

Hi CurtRK, and a warm welcome to the forums!
You mention the envelope, but how about the Cache, and doing it like this...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move the following folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.

  • FORCE QUIT COMMAND DESAPEARED

    Hello,
From some moment the combination: CommandOptionEsc doesn't work. Is there any way to reset it or check what is the problem? (now I can force quit only through Activity Monitor)
    Thank you,

    Barry,
    Thank you!
I made everything you advised and it didn't work and then while I was restarting again I notices a little white corner in the right bottom corner of my screen. I grabbed it and it happened to be my lost force quit panel! I have no idea how it got there.
Without doing things you recommended I would never find it so thank you a lot!

  • Force Quit Logs Me Off

When an application freezes or stops responding, i naturely open Force Quit. After I Quit the application that has frozen and then right when i click close on Force Quit i am automatically logged off and i have to log in again. Help?
    Hardware:
    Macbook Pro C2D
    Saitek Eclipse II Keyboard
    Razer Copperhead Mouse

It is not normal for any of those applications to "freeze" often!
I am assuming you are force-quitting only applications that report as not-responding?
There has to be a pattern. find the pattern, and we find the problem.
If you re-boot your mac and walk away (do nothing) does it freeze? If it does, then you have a hardware problem. If not, then there might be a hardware problem, but more likely a software problem. Software problems usually have specific triggers - something you type, some web page you load, or movie you view, that causes a fault.
Go into Applications/Utilities and run the CONSOLE application. Next time something strange happens, pop-over to it and see what it says. Console is a Unix feature, and 'everything' running on your computer dumps status and error messages to it.

  • 9 times out of 10 I have to force-quit to get out of my g-mail. This only happens only on my i-Mac, never on my Macbook pro. Can anybody help ?

    MAX OS X - version 10.7.5 :
For some weeks now, I have to force-quit 9 times out of 10 to get out of my e-mail account (g-mail). This only happens on my i-Mac, never with my other devices (Macbook Pro, i.Phone, i-Pad).
Does anybody know what could be the reason for this ?
    Thanks

OK, you have iMovie 08, which is also known is iMovie Version 7.1.4. It has been a few years since i used this version, so this is based on memory.
The only components you must have in the Library/QuickTime folder are the AppleIntermediateCodec.component and the AppleMPEG2Codec.component.
All the others could potentially be causing problems. I would drag the DivX components, the Flip4Mac components, and the Google Camera components to the Desktop temporarily, so nothing is left in this folder except the two Apple components.
Then restart your Mac and start iMovie. If it works, yay!
If you still need these other components for some other app, you can probably get updated DivX components for free at Perian.org.
You can get updated Flip4Mac components by running WMV Player and updating. It should prompt you to update automatically.
I am not sure about the Google components, but if you are running something that needs them, it should prompt you to install the current versions.
If none of that works, post back.

You can setup Mail for iCloud on the eMac.
Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
    • Server name: imap.mail.me.com
    • SSL Required: Yes
    • Port: 993
    • Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
    • Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
    • Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
    • SSL Required: Yes
    • Port: 587
    • SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
    • Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
    • Password: Your iCloud password

Thanks for responding....but isn't your potential solution designed for Windows users? I have a Mac.
If it does apply to Mac, I am also hoping for something simpler as this could take weeks to isolate the problem and it would be more efficient to use another browser for mail
Also, I should have added, this problem occurs only occasionally and seemingly only when I am taking some time to compose a message

  • After upgrading to Mountain Lion the mail app will not quit and then freezes only a force quit will work. How do i quit it normaly?

Under the Mailbox drop down it is the last option.  Just select a mailbox first before going to the Mailbox menu.

  • MAIL APP will NOT OPEN- NOT RESPONDING/FORCE QUIT

    Macbook Pro 2011
    Using Mavericks OS X 10.95
I don't really use the Mac Mail very often because have always had problems with it so I will tend to use Gmail, Yahoo or whatever service it is.  I cannot even get mail to open at this point.  It just says Application Not Responding and then I force quit. and it still wont open.  The only annoying part is often on websites theres an email link to click and that opens the MAIL application to get that website.
Due to other problems, the Apple Geniuses recently wiped off my computer and made me install a backup so it should be 'fresh' and I wasn't having this happen before.  But then again, installing t he backup has created numerous problems that didnt exist before.  Ive tried rebooting already.  There are no pending software updates.  Everything is up to date except that it is not running Yosemite.

    Do a backup.
    Quit Mail.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

  • Any ideas for Mail must-force-quit bug after 10.5.2 upgrade?

I've tried many different things suggested on this forum (removing bundles; rebuilding mailboxes; moving Mail folder to desktop for rebuild; eliminating To Dos; creating new Address Book DB). But nothing seems to work. I have to force quit Mail every time. Now it sometimes doesn't check Mail manually either.
What exactly changed in the 5.2 update that could cause so many problems? Mail is becoming intolerable. I'm not a huge fan of Office, but in 5+ years, Entourage never gave me such difficulties. Come on, Apple!

OK, I found a solution. If possible, use a webmail account to go in and delete your "To Do" folders, if that is what is hanging your Mail application. I did that with one IMAP account, only to have "To Do" items show up under another IMAP account. That account is on my web host, so I converted the account to POP. After that, Mail started working properly again since it was not trying to sync "To Do" items with various IMAP servers.
This problem started after upgrading to 5.2, though I noticed others experienced it with 5.0 and 5.1.

  • I want to delete my mac account and replace it with my gmail account. I know how to do this but when I click and open up mail I get the spinning wheel and have to force quit mail.

I want to disable my mac.com mail, I know how to delete it but I cannot get into mail to do this, whenever I click on mail, or mail in system preferences to open it I get the spinning wheel and have to force quit. I am running a Macbook 10.7.5
    Thanks,
    Edward.

You can't merge Apple IDs.  You also can't cancel (delete) and existing ID, you can only choose to stop using it.
If your old ID was compromised and you can no longer access it, you'll have to contact Apple for assistance.  Go to https://expresslane.apple.com ; click 'See all products and services' at the bottom of the page. In the next page click 'More Products and Services, then 'Apple ID'. In the next page select 'Other Apple ID Topics' then then 'Apple ID account Security’.

  • Mail Unresponsive on System Resume from Sleep, Have to Force Quit

When I resume my MacBook Air from sleep everything except mail resumes nicely.  Mail seems to freeze up (unresponsive) and I end up having to force quit  and re-launch it to get it working again.  I've rebuilt all the mailboxes but no joy.  I am using a Mail account and an Exchange account only.  I also disable power nap but that seems to have had no effect.  The problem exists whether connected to external monitor or stand alone and it doesn't make any difference if the laptop is connected to the internet or not.  Seems to be an issue that has developed since the last OSX upgrade.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Have to force-quit Mail - Update did not fix

The update seemed to fix all of the issues I had with SL, except for the spinning wheels in Mail, and that Mail will not quit without a force-quit. It will even cancel a restart. Am I the only one left with this issue?

    Problem
Here is what is happening. Btw I am using a Dutch version so my apologies if I translate menu-options wrong.
Mail is opened at startup. When I want to quit (CMD-Q) mail, nothing happens and the program gets in a sort of wait state. The system doesn't say that mail is not responding anymore. When I open the Mail-menu several options are greyed-out, including the CMD-Q as if the program is waiting for something. After waiting 15 minutes still the same and the only way to end mail is by using the force quit option.
If Mail is opened and I use the red X to close the window it isn't possible to open it anymore. Stopping the normal way isn't possible either and I am in the same situation as above and need to force-quit Mail.
If I leave Mail open and want to shutdown the computer I have to force quit Mail, because otherwise I cannot shutdown anymore.
    *Solutions I've tried*
Using the Rebuild menu-option doesn't help.
I have downloaded the complete 10.6.2 dmg-file and re-installed it. This seemed to fix the problem, at least for a little while. But unfortunately after a day the same problem came back
    How can this be possible?
Is there anyone out there who has the same problem and knows how to fix this? Would it help to re-install the mailprogram? How do I do this?
This is happening on the new computer of my father. I have convinced him to make the switch from Windows, but this situation is making me feel a bit embarrassed
