Mail freezes every time I try to open it.

Question

When I try to get on the Mail application, the screen for Mail appears, but after a second or two, the beachball appears and I'm forced to close the application. I don't know why this is happening, as Mail has always worked until a couple of days ago. How can I fix this?

What happens if you just let the beach ball keep spinning for
5 or 10 more minutes? It may be that Mail.app is just finding
a lot of new e-mails to download, or some index has broken and
it's trying to rebuild it.
Maybe an unrelated question, but can you upgrade to 10.4.11
and see if anything changes? I think there were some other
security updates as well. I've always been a big proponent
of having everything up to date. Use the "combo" version -
it's bigger, but it includes all of the previous updates.
Also, can you tell us what else you're running at the time
Mail.app fails? And your hardware environment (iMac, MacBook,
memory, disk, etc.). Does anything else act weird like this?
