Mail Freezes (Spinning Cursor) - Assistance Appreciated
Greetings, thank you for reading and responding to my post.
I have a remote client (she's offline) with a macbook. She uses Mail. I haven't checked her OS version, but presume 10.4.
She was sending an email, and went to attach a PDF. At this point she got the spinning cursor. It doesn't resolve. If she quits and starts again, she sees
the same email, and the cursor spins.
I had her remove a preference file, but this causes Mail to go into account setup mode, so I had her replace that file.
I'd appreciate any advice for things we can try to resolve it, while maintaining her existing email/settings.
Thanks in advance!
Hello, Organelle. Did you solve the spinning ball problem? I am having the same problem today. I tried to send a file that was too large and got the spinning ball and cannot get rid of it. I tried quitting Mail and restarting to no avail. Help!!! Can anyone help? Thanks.

Mail freezing after installing iTunes 11.0.1
I'm running Snow leopard on a 2011 Macbook Pro. I just installed iTunes 11.0.1, and since then, mail keeps freezing (spinning cursor) and right-clicking on the icon in the dock shows application not responding.
Anyone else experiencing this?OK I think I fixed this problem, but it makes no sense. The usual synch mechanism was still failing, for giggles I tried selcting the Option "Sync with this iPad over Wi-Fi". This is silly and unreasonable because my desktop only has a wired LAN connection and no Wi-Fi. That of course did not work, but once I unselected the option and plugged the iPad back into the USB port, I was able to sync. Go figure. I will try additional sync in a few day and with the iPhone before declaring victory.

Every once in a while after a restart; I'll get what I call the New Mail/Widget bug; I can't open compose new message in mail; (spinning cursor) and the yellowpages widget has no text input field.
I solve the problem with a simple restart or a combo update.
Im just curious as to what the cause of this problem is? A bad bootup?
thxYellow pages widget? Did I miss an iPhone update or are you in the wrong forum?

Can't get Mail to work - I get the spinning wheel and Mail freezes. I have to Force Quit Mail . How do I fix this problem?
Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return. -
I am having a problem with Apple Mail freezing upn launc. the cursor spins continually and I cannot launc other apps except in "safe" mode" or relaunc in regular mode then I am able to launch other apps. Any answers out there. Thanks
When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -
Frequent 30 second spinning cursor in MacBook with 2GB RAM?
I currently use a G5 dual processor desktop and a laptop daily. I just switched from a MacBook Pro to a MacBook with 2 GB of RAM. All of them have identical configurations that were copied from one machine to another over Firewire at install time.
After switching from the MacBook Pro, I immediately noticed that it quite often "hangs" for a few seconds with a spinning cursor at strange times. It seems to do this pretty consisently when waking from sleep, but it does it many other times as well.
I've noticed it a lot in Mail but it happens in other applications too.
I've noticed that when it hangs, my Activity Monitor shows that the processors are NOT fully utilized.
From reading the previous posts in the thread "Slow Performance", my experience seems to be different because I have plenty of RAM and can compare it to the same setup on a MacBook Pro but am definitely noticing slowdowns.
Anyone else seeing this kind of "hang" or "delay" with a spinning cursor on their MacBook?
~JoshI think that my problems has been solved by tech support. They reckoned it was a problem with the power management which was resolved by the following....
Shutdown
restart holding CTRL ALT P & R (To resest NVRAM)
Shutdown
remove all peripherals, power supply AND battery.
Hold down power button for 15 seconds
Put the battery back in and reboot.
After I did this I ran parralells with windows XP in it which is quite processor intensive and is the thing that will always cause my problem and the fans would kick in as normal at about 60 c, but this time the temperature actuallly went down to 55c and then would fluctuate at 57c +-2c whatever processing I was doing and NO SPINNING beachball.
I have only test for one night but it is the first time that I have used my system without the problem since I have had it (2 weeks).
I hope this helps someone. -
Rainbow spinning cursor and slow internet recently
I am not very tech savvy but I will try and describe what is going on. Recently (last week or so) my computer has been extremely slow and the rainbow spinning cursor seems to appear all the time. I notice it mainly when I am using the internet, mainly because I am mostly on the internet when I use my computer. I believe it is a problem with my computer because my husband has a 2011 MacBook Pro and he does not have any problems with his computer. My computer is a 2010 MacBook Pro, and I ran an Etre Check to see if it helps. I typically use Google Chrome as my browser (we both do) and my operating system is OS X.

Spinning Cursor of Death on all actions and apps
I now have the spinning cursor of death on all apps all finder actions in snow leopard
over last 3 months, OS periodically dumped bluetooth, resetting the Sys management controller fixed this, also zapped the pram twice in this time. in the last 10 days had to do this every 5 days.
All actions are extremely slow, spinning ball cursor on all apps and icons bouncing in dock for long time, all apps slow in operation, the command F is also very slow, if backing up to usb drive doing any other tasks is almost impossible
1. booted from external HD (Backup'd with Chronosync) drive and ran disk utility to repair permissions 3 times. Although it states the permissions are repaired on the 3rd time it was a repeat of the first. So it appears it is not repairing the permissions at all
2. reset system management controller
3. zapped pram
account - admin ( only used for installing apps). My user ac and a 2nd user account set up for family visitors. This ac hadn't been opened for 9 months and I found couldn't log in - froze twice forced restart - also to log out and login to any other ac took 3 min, normal 15 secs. Deleted the family ac and login returned to normal on other ac's
4. booted from installer disk and ran disk repair, aok, and then permissions repair twice.
5. booted from installer disk 2 and ran apple hardware test aok
Been thru the apps folder and deleted any app no longer required and deleted prefs from the prefs folder as well as well an any other orphan files.
appeared to be working ok until boot next day same problems, re-booted in safe mode and tried using firefox and then opening excel, same problem, deleted firefox and all accompanying files. Rebooted and problem worse than ever. OS is unusable. Currently working from chronosync bootable HD from last bootable backup 12 days ago. ( files backed up daily)
I would like to avoid erasing the HD and clean instal if possible I have 400 GB of data - The latest updates are installed on everything
Any help as to what to do next would be appreciated

Sounds like malware, boot drive failing, bad sectors or OS x is messed up.

Apple changed some things under the hood, so it's going to show certain Disk Uitlity permisisons fixes over and over, that you can ignore.
2. reset system management controller
3. zapped pram
not applicable in your case, but it doesn't hurt.

Well copy that 400GB of User Data to another drive, as to fix your issue may require a erase and install to fix the bad sectors issue.
Run through this list of fixes, wipe and install is last and if that still gives you problems then it's a bad drive.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
This will fix the bad sector issue if you just want to jump and do that.
Erase, formatting, OS X installs on Mac's
I also suspect because your using Chronosych, that it's not doing something right and/or OS X is getting confused with the two boot drives.
Once your fixed up, use Carbon Copy Cloner instead and make sure to name the clone something differnet.
Most commonly used backup methods
Read this to max your Snow Leopards performacne, you may juat want to do that then CCC clone it and be sweet and fast again.

Mail freezing -- unable to open any messages
Hello -
I've normally been running OSX 10.3.3. This system has been totally stable. I also had OSX10.3.8 installed on a second internal hard drive for testing purposes. This afternoon, I upgraded the 10.3.8 system to 10.3.9 using the combo updater.
After the upgrade was complete, I rebooted from my primary system drive (10.3.3) and attempted to check my email. Mail (it now says v. 1.3.11) acted strangely -- it downloaded 2 copies of each new email, and then froze as soon as I attempted to open any email. This behavior is now constant - if I open Mail and then click on any email in any mailbox, Mail freezes and I have to force quit.
I've tried discarding the Mail p.list, I've removed my inbox from the Library folder, I've repaired permissions, I've run Disc Warrior. No joy.
Is it possible that when I upgraded to 10.3.9 on my second drive, the upgrade somehow messed with the Mail program on my primary drive and updated it to a version which is not compatible with 10.3.3? And if so, how do I revert back to the proper version of Mail?
The only other noteworthy point is the (possibly coincidental) fact that when I checked my email that first time after completing the upgrade, the new message contained several unusually large attacments (between 2 and 4megs each) -- I don't know if these overloaded Mail. However, if this were the case, I would have thought that removing my In Box to the desktop and forcing the creation of a new In Box would have solved the problem.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Zack
G4 sawtooth with 1.3Ghz CPU upgrade, 1.25 gb RAM Mac OS X (10.3.3)OK, finally figured this out. When I updated the system on my second drive to OS10.3.9, the combo updater somehow updated the mail program on my primary drive (OS 10.3.3) to Mail 1.3.11 This later version of mail is apparently incompatible with the earlier system (10.3.3), hence my problems. When I threw out the updated version of Mail, and reinstalled the version of Mail present on the 10.3.3 installer (Mail v.1.3.4), then put back my old preferences and mailboxes, everything worked fine.
It's REALLY FRUSTRATING that Apple would do such boneheaded thing as allow an updater which is being applied to a system on one drive to mess with an application on a different drive that is associated with a different system. It only wasted two days of my life to work this out. AARRGGHH!

Mac Mail Freezes When I try to Delete Trash
Mac Mail Freezes when I try to delete trash. Spinning wheel of death goes for 10 - 15 minutes and freezes the entire computer. Please Help!
BDAqua -& Thoma_r - I did a safe boot, did repair permissions. 2 of the "Permission Differs" messages:
Permissions differ on "private/var/log/secure.log", should be -rw------- , they are -rw-r----- .
Permissions differ on "Library/Application Support/ProApps/Internal Plug-Ins/BrowserKit/iLife.bkplugin/Contents/CodeResources", should be -rw-rw-r-- , they are lrwxr-xr-x . and around 30 more... Nothing about MacMail that I could tell.
There are 8 messages:
Group differs on "Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaPluginCocoa.bundle/Contents/CodeResources", should be 80, group is 0.
Went into Console and was very confused as the dates start 2000 and ends at 2010 and nothing I could decipher as MacMail.
Is this MacMail?

Mail freezes when I send to a certain address
I have one particular email address for a colleague that whenever I send him an email, mail freezes and I get the spinning ball. I have to force quit and relaunch mail at which time mail sends the message.
I have repaired permissions, am completely up date on 10.6.6, deleted and recreated the address card for the colleague but I suspect the problem may be the auto fill address in mail might be using some older corrupt version of the address to send the message.
Any thoughts on how I can correct this without resorting to the workaround, force quitting and relaunching mail eveytime I send this person an email?Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take an action that isn't working the way you expect. Select any lines that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Sometimes when try to attach, mail freezes
At least once a day now, when I am composing a reply and try to attach a document, it will freeze up mail.app (spinning wheel). At this point, if I try to force quit, it will not quit mail fully, and I am left having to restart the computer. This just began a week or two ago. Once I restart I can attach again, at least for a while, then it will happen again. I tried searching for this issue but could not find it. I do have growl installed, but it has been installed for quite a while without these problems. It is an exchange account I am using when this happens.
Thanks.I believe that this is the most recent one for this incident this morning.

Mail Freezes when Camino is running
I generate 400 e-mails from FileMaker. If Camino is not running all is well. Mail receives each e-mail from FileMaker and sends it off.
However, if Camino is running Mail freezes ... the ball spins for ever and no mail is sent. I force quite and restart Mail. About 100 e-mail are in the Outbox and Mail starts sending them. I have to be quick and take Mail off-line or I end up with a partial mailing.
I have tried the public release of Camino and the developers nightly builds. No luck.
Any ideas?
Thanks.Look for additional information that may be available in the form of error messages written to the Console:
1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Console.
2. From the File menu, choose either Open Console Log, or Open System Log, or both, so that Console displays the contents of both system.log and console.log.
3. Reproduce the problem and look at the bottom of the Console windows for messages that might be written there as a result. -
Mail freezes when attach using icon and dialog box, but OK with drag attach
Everthing else on my mail is working fine, but when I try to use the "Attach" icon on a new or reply message, the finder dialog box comes up, and then mail freezes with the spinning ball. Alternatively, if I drag and drop a file to the new mail window, it works fine. Also, if I right click (CTRL-click) on a file, and select "Open With -> Mail" That also works fine.
My suspicion of the problem is that the attach file dialog box keeps defaulting to open files in a folder that was in a link that's no longer available (deleted link), and it freezes things up. Because it always opens up to the same folder, and that's where it freezes, without showing any files in that folder.
Thank you for your help!Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list. Leave checked (enabled) only the port configuration needed to connect to Internet and Built-in Ethernet (in that order if not the same). Uncheck (disable) the rest. Parallels in particular, if you have that installed, is known to cause this problem in Mail.
