Mail freezes upon IMAP download

dear all,
my mail.app does freeze every time i start it, or when my mail.app tries to synchronize more than one IMAP folder simultanously.
I have os 10.4.8 with all updates available. also, i do not use any plug-ins for mail.app
does anyone know that problem?
thank you for your help.
Laptop   Mac OS X (10.4)

Hello szelpa.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
What you say about synchronizing more than one IMAP folder makes me wonder. Go to Preferences > Accounts > Advanced. Is Automatically synchronize changed mailboxes ON or OFF? If ON, is there a reason you’ve chosen that setting?
You may also try the following to check whether the junk filter could have a bearing on this:
1. Either tell Mail to go offline immediately after opening it, or shut down your Internet connection and open Mail afterwards.
2. Go to Preferences > Junk Mail and disable junk mail filtering.
3. Go online again.

  • Why does mavericks mail freeze mac while downloading new mail

why does my mac freeze up while new emails are being downloaded ?

Same problems here, too. It started a few days ago. A lot of users seem to have this/these problem(s). Is there still no solution to this from Apple, apart from a complete reset of the iPad? Quite embarrassing issue for Apple - the "settings" are a quite important part of a computer, and one  that shouldn't freeze....
Other forums suggest it is an iCloud problem (which might explain that contacts does not work - and the calendar without sync is meaningless anyway). After MobileMe, with which many users had similar problems, had to be replaced by iCloud, maybe iCloud  has to be replaced, too. MobileMe, iCloud, next is YouLoose, maybe. Hopefully Apple looks at its own wbsite and works on solutions.

  • Reader 9.3.2 freezes upon opening downloaded .pdf doc; can't uninstall 9.3.2

Adobe Reader 9.3.2 (Win XP) stops functioning (not responding under Task Manager) when I open a downloaded pdf file. Cannot uninstall 9.3.2 to reinstall. Adobe Reader Repair didn't fix the issue. File is set to open w/ Reader. Help!

    Hi!
Thank you for your response. The error message I got said that there was another program using Adobe Reader or Acrobat and I needed to close it before uninstalling. But there WASN'T another program open. I shut everything down (did not go thru my "processes running" list on my Task Manager, however...hmm, maybe that was the problem, it now occurs to me....)
I haven't tried the link you gave me yet, b/c I think the problem may be that I downloaded the pdf file using Firefox 3.6 & from what I understand, Firefox 3.6 has issues w/ Acrobat/Reader/pdf files. I WAS able - after trying many times - to open the file in my browser window. I may try to download the file again using IE 8, but it's not an important file and so this issue isn't high on my priority list at the moment! But thank you again for your response. If in the near future, I get a chance to tackle this again, I'll be sure to let you know the result.

  • Mail Freezes Upon Launch

A week or two ago I received an email that I know to contain a video. I know this because I can access the email through the internet based email client for VCN. When I selected this email in mail it froze up on the loading screen, the little circle goes around and around forever, and my mouse decides to become a pinwheel and camp out. With the message being selected I cannot click anywhere else to do anything, mail is basically stuck, it wont even automatically retrieve more messages. And the message is selected whenever I start mail, so I never have a chance to click on any other message.
At first I figured that maybe it was just going to take a long time to load for some reason - my ISP (ResNet) has some traffic shaping protocols that kills my Azureus use, however, after leaving mail for two days straight it never did anything other than stay unresponsive. Anyone have any suggestions as to how to get around this? I don't need the message itself anymore as I already got the video off of the internet based client. The video is actually split into two 4,000KB wmv files with about a line of text in the message box.
I got this email from a close friend and know that they wouldn't have intentionally put anything malicious of any sort within the message, **** they can barely figure out how to run their own machine.
Any help would be appreciated, even if I have to uninstall and reinstall mail.

I sent myself a message to my Mail account (it’s a .Mac account) and then found the attachment in:
    Users/myusername/Library/Mail
(where ‘myusername’ is the name of your user account)
I had to root around in the Mail folder to find the folder with an Attachments folder in it and in that, buried in two subfolders which had numbers for names (280 and 2), I found the attachment.
Unfortunately a search in Spotlight only came up with the Attachment folder for my Eudora e-mail program and didn’t find the Attachments folder in the Mail folder.
You may be able to find the Mail/Attachments folder quickly if you sort the finder window my date. The conflicting attachment should be the last date you could use Mail since you haven’t been able to use it since.
Hope you find it and deleting it solves your problem.

  • Mail app freezes upon opening after Mavericks install

Following my installation of mavericks, apple mail app freezes upon opening. Windows do not open; program immediately begins "not responding." Having followed this with a force quit loop for a day, I installed airmail, a serviceable alternative, but not well integrated with address book. As such, I'm interested in finding a fix for mail app. Advice will be greatly appreciated.

I have same problem with my macbook pro 2009
Worked fine when first installed now mail app fails to open. Not the same issue as with macbook airs.

  • Mail freeze's and then restarts

    Hey guys,
once i receive a new email and i go to reply to it Mail, freeze's goes to an error screen and relaunch's Mail, but whenever i got to an older email i am able to send the message through. Any ideas?

Unrelated to why it is not gathering the email into the Inbox, let me address about POP. For POP access, Gmail assembles a subset of the new messages in the Inbox for presentation to the first email client that signs to download. After that, Gmail remembers that one computer has already accessed the message, and does present it for any second computer and email client to download, even though the messages remain on the server. That is why it can said to not be true POP3, and there are things to get corrupted in the process.
With the change, you must sign onto your Gmail account via your browser, and then click on Settings. Once on that page, click to enable IMAP in under Status in the section for IMAP access. Sorry to not mention this earlier, but I was rushing out the door for some errands.
Did you delete the Outbox.mbox folder, btw?

  • Help! MAIL CRASHING upon launch

I let my automatic updater update my OS X.4.10 (was it .9 before?) system. Now whenever I try to launch Mail, it crashes within a few seconds. I ran my Disk Utility application to verify my disk (not permissions), as posted on another thread. No problems were found. So I reinstalled the update. Same problem. Mail crashes upon launch. HELP!!!

For what type of account - .Mac, IMAP or POP?
You can try to stop the fetching process via the Activity Viewer window but this will not resolve the problem when the fetching process resumes.
Assuming you have webmail access for this account, you can delete some of the messages available at the incoming mail server or if you can create server stored mailboxes for this account via webmail access, transfer a large portion of the messages available in the account's Inbox mailbox to the server stored mailboxes to reduce the number of messages available to be downloaded by Mail.
After the Mail.app download process has completed for a smaller number of messages, you can gradually transfer messages from the server stored mailboxes to the account's Inbox mailbox reducing the number of new messages to be downloaded by the Mail.app at one time.
Over 4000 messages in the account's Inbox mailbox at the server is a good deal of messages. Either this account is an IMAP type account with a large server storage space quota or if a POP type account, the server storage space quota must be large.

  • Mac Mail freezes, console shows com.apple.mdworker.pool.0 i-o error - encoder error

Mac OS X 10.7.5:  In the last couple weeks, my Mail app has been frequently freezing, requiring "force quit" and restart. When I check the console log, I get pages like this leading up to the crash:
What can I do about this?

one more bit of context for problem just posted: often the Mail app will start downloading a lot of messages, sometimes 20, or 200, or 1500+, and the progress bar will show them downloading, but when it's finished, there's no change to the number of messages that appear in my Inbox. I have a few different email accounts, all set up to use IMAP. The Mail > Windows menu > Connection Doctor shows all green lights for my accounts, nothing to troubleshoot.
Okay, that's all the background I can think of.
Thanks for any help with this!

  • Mail freezes, won't send

I know there have been several threads recently about Mail not sending, but my problem did not seem to match up with anyone else's, so perhaps I'm alone in this or there's some simple solution I've overlooked.
I have three Gmail IMAP accounts running through Mail; all have behaved fine until recently. Now several (related?) problems are occurring:
    1) After mail has been open for a minute or so, it does not receive new messages. New messages ONLY arrive upon opening Mail. Attempting to quit at this point freezes Mail and requires a force quit.
    2) Attempting to view/sort/search mailboxes fails after a minute or so of Mail being open. (i.e. When I am in mailbox #1 and I attempt a search or click on mailbox #2, Mail freezes and won't display a list of messages or the body of a message. Attempting to quit at this point freezes Mail and requires a force quit.
    3) When I'm composing an outgoing message, if I've taken more than a minute or two, Mail won't send the message. I click on Send and nothing happens. The window showing my draft disappears, but the "Sent" Mailbox never changes to "Sending...", the message is not saved to Drafts and is never sent. Essentially it is lost (You can imagine how much fun this has been). Attempting to quit at this point freezes Mail and requires a force quit.
Any thoughts on what's happening here? On an unrelated(?) note, I've had the same issue others have discussed, wherein Safari is not retaining cookies. Safari has also been freezing my screen and mouse several times a day, necessitating a hard restart. Don't know if this is related; one problem at a time.

Anybody? Any thoughts? Maybe a starting point...?

  • Qosmio G30 freezes upon Norton Internet Security 2008 startup

Norton Internet Security 2008 will freeze my computer as soon it tries to load and the only way to go on is to restart the system by pressing the on/off-button.
My notebook is a Toshiba Qosmio G30-177 (Model No. PQG32E-02G022GR) with Vista Ultimate and NIS2007 pre-installed. I have no problems with this NIS2008 version on my other notebook (Qosmio F10 - PQF10E-02300JGR, WinXP MCE).
NIS2007 runs fine on my G30 and I do not have any problems at all, but newer versions of NIS seem to get in conflict with my system:
    1. I am able to install and run the new version, download all updates and adjust the settings. Maybe one or two days later my computer will freeze after start exactly when the tray icon of NIS appears. For a couple of seconds there is just no response of the system at all and the LED's of my notebook show that all HD activity has stopped. After being idle for these couple of seconds, the cooling fan will start to operate at maximum power, creating a tremendous noise I never experienced before, not even while the CPU was running at 100% for some time due to other programs. Forcing a restart is all I can do.
    2. Now this time, I successfully restarted my notebook again (took some attempts) and it suddenly did not freeze. Then I disabled firewall and auto-protect permanently, so there was no freezing upon startup and I just had to manually activate both firewall and auto-protect after start. In order to prevent freezing again after reboot, I always disabled NIS before shutdown. For the next one or two days this workaround was quite successful.
    3. All of a sudden, after one or two days, this workaround is going to become useless, because the system starts to freeze again at the very moment the tray icon appears. In this case, restarting has no effect at all, and NIS will continue to freeze at startup. I also tried to prevent NIS form starting by no longer allowing ccApp.exe to automatically run upon start (administrative tools > system configuration > "startup" tab). This is successful and my notebook is able to start normally, but if I later try to start NIS manually, it will freeze again.
I had this problem since NIS2008 was just released, so I thought that meanwhile a Windows or Norton update might have fixed the issue, but this weekend I gave NIS2008 another try without success. I am almost sure that the problem is not caused by any other software than Windows and/or Norton, because I also tried to install NIS after a full system recovery, thus having only pre-installed NIS2007 and Vista on my notebook. I did use the Norton removal tool and followed the deinstall instructions before trying to install the newer version of course.
My last hope was that the NIS2009beta version somehow would not freeze my system, but it does. It does not matter if I try to run 2008 or 2009beta version, the problem is exactly the same.
What really drives me almost crazy is the fact that NIS runs perfectly for some time, then needs a rather small workaround, and then after some time totally refuses to work. In these couple of days I did not change any system settings, install or deinstall any programs or did anything that I felt could conflict with NIS...
So far, I have no idea of a solution and have to use NIS2007 again.
Does anybody know how to solve this problem?

    Hi !
I use NIS since 2001 and never had any serious trouble with this software.
There could be some compatibility problem, but I don't think that Vista is causing it, because otherwise a lot more people should have the same problem. Even the installation of all current Windows, NIS and Qosmio updates did not solve it. Of course I tried to get help using Symantec's Support and their user forums, but without success. This problem seems to be a rare one (unfortunately for me). I tested the NIS2009beta and even though it's a new version, the PC freezes again when this program starts. And this made me think that maybe a service or setup by Toshiba causes the problem and other Vista users are not affected. It's a strange thing that the pre-installed NIS2007 version is running fine...
    Cheers,
    Mario

  • Mountain Lion Mail freezing?

Anyone having this trouble? Archives on Mail freezing goes back to 2005. Has it resurfaced? This annoying thing just started tonight, when I was trying to attach a small eps file, or just now, simply clicking on Reply to a message. Anyone else dealing with this?

Very frustrating indeed.  While just trying to view an email containing an eps attached, Mail completely freezes upon selecting that message.  I even deleted the message on the server, but it is still showing up in the thread in Mail.  Sorry, no further insight here...

  • Mail crashes w/IMAP account access; EXC_BAD_ACCESS; KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE

My Mail app crashes with error (see below) when trying to access an IMAP account. I installed Adobe Creative Suite 2, that caused Mail and Safari to both fail. I uninstalled CS2 but that didn't help.
I tried a different user account, and both Safari and Mail worked fine.
    I deleted com.apple.mail.plist and com.apple.Safari.plist but that didn't help.
I re-started Mail with no accounts, successfully added the .Mac account and a POP account. Then as soon as I added an IMAP account it started failing the same way: it opens okay then fails as soon as the IMAP account checks mail. Using Mail when logged in under a different user id doesn't have this problem, so it doesn't appear to be a bad email message.
I've searched through this forum (thanks!) and believe I've collected the right data, but am unsure what to do next ... i.e. exactly where is the problem!
    thanks for any help,
    Chris

    Hi, BDAqua,
No, no 3rd party or Internet Helpers, BUT I did load Adobe Creative Suite 2 (Photoshop, Illustrator, and other apps to make me smarter, faster, and more handsome. It had some automatic updater functions, and given that Mail and Safari suffered catastrophic failures I believe they put some hooks in there).
I've since unloaded the Suite -- I should know better than to load an entire suite. Also, I now have 23GB of space on my harddrive, and wonder if I ran out of room during the install. There was no error, but CS2 comes on 4 DVDs so I wonder ...
    Hi, Mulder,
I deleted the cache files - lots of stuff. I deleted two of the other files (didn't have downloads.plist).
Unfortunately, Mail still dies when it checks for mail in the IMAP account.

  • Mail freezing -- unable to open any messages

    Hello -
I've normally been running OSX 10.3.3. This system has been totally stable. I also had OSX10.3.8 installed on a second internal hard drive for testing purposes. This afternoon, I upgraded the 10.3.8 system to 10.3.9 using the combo updater.
After the upgrade was complete, I rebooted from my primary system drive (10.3.3) and attempted to check my email. Mail (it now says v. 1.3.11) acted strangely -- it downloaded 2 copies of each new email, and then froze as soon as I attempted to open any email. This behavior is now constant - if I open Mail and then click on any email in any mailbox, Mail freezes and I have to force quit.
I've tried discarding the Mail p.list, I've removed my inbox from the Library folder, I've repaired permissions, I've run Disc Warrior. No joy.
Is it possible that when I upgraded to 10.3.9 on my second drive, the upgrade somehow messed with the Mail program on my primary drive and updated it to a version which is not compatible with 10.3.3? And if so, how do I revert back to the proper version of Mail?
The only other noteworthy point is the (possibly coincidental) fact that when I checked my email that first time after completing the upgrade, the new message contained several unusually large attacments (between 2 and 4megs each) -- I don't know if these overloaded Mail. However, if this were the case, I would have thought that removing my In Box to the desktop and forcing the creation of a new In Box would have solved the problem.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Zack

OK, finally figured this out. When I updated the system on my second drive to OS10.3.9, the combo updater somehow updated the mail program on my primary drive (OS 10.3.3) to Mail 1.3.11 This later version of mail is apparently incompatible with the earlier system (10.3.3), hence my problems. When I threw out the updated version of Mail, and reinstalled the version of Mail present on the 10.3.3 installer (Mail v.1.3.4), then put back my old preferences and mailboxes, everything worked fine.
It's REALLY FRUSTRATING that Apple would do such boneheaded thing as allow an updater which is being applied to a system on one drive to mess with an application on a different drive that is associated with a different system. It only wasted two days of my life to work this out. AARRGGHH!

  • Mail 4.2 IMAP problems

Mail 4.2 does not delete mail from the server when, while in Mail, I move an e-mail from an IMAP folder to a local (on my laptop) folder. When I check mail again, the message is downloaded again.
Sometimes, but not always, if I have read a message, the message is reflagged as unread when mail is checked.
When using a slow internet connection, such as in a hotel or a clients conference room, mail does not download new messages from my IMAP server. It does download new messages from an Exchange server.
I have none of these problems when I use Thunderbird 3.0, so the problem is Mail and not my server.
I do not use GMail or any of the other canned IMAP servers. My IMAP accounts on are a virtual FreeBSD server from Verio.
Applecare support thinks this is a bug, but I suspect that is the standard way of saying I don't know.

Count me as another person seeing the issue where IMAP moves aren't "sticking".
I connect my Mail to an MS Exchange server at work, and for the past 2 weeks, my move operations on messages aren't committing to the server. If I switch over to Entourage or Outlook Web Access, the moves will stick.
For example, I mark a message as Junk, which is supposed to then move the message to the Junk folder. I navigate away from the Inbox to another folder, and when I come back, the message that I'd marked as Junk is back in the Inbox. This happens for all folders, not just Inbox, by the way.
I've tried synchronizing, I've tried the Rebuild command. I've even trashed my Envelope file and let that rebuild cleanly. No joy.
Very frustrating to have to open another mail client in order to do mailbox cleanup all the time.
