Mail Freezes Upon Launch

A week or two ago I received an email that I know to contain a video. I know this because I can access the email through the internet based email client for VCN. When I selected this email in mail it froze up on the loading screen, the little circle goes around and around forever, and my mouse decides to become a pinwheel and camp out. With the message being selected I cannot click anywhere else to do anything, mail is basically stuck, it wont even automatically retrieve more messages. And the message is selected whenever I start mail, so I never have a chance to click on any other message.
At first I figured that maybe it was just going to take a long time to load for some reason - my ISP (ResNet) has some traffic shaping protocols that kills my Azureus use, however, after leaving mail for two days straight it never did anything other than stay unresponsive. Anyone have any suggestions as to how to get around this? I don't need the message itself anymore as I already got the video off of the internet based client. The video is actually split into two 4,000KB wmv files with about a line of text in the message box.
I got this email from a close friend and know that they wouldn't have intentionally put anything malicious of any sort within the message, **** they can barely figure out how to run their own machine.
Any help would be appreciated, even if I have to uninstall and reinstall mail.

I sent myself a message to my Mail account (it’s a .Mac account) and then found the attachment in:
Users/myusername/Library/Mail
(where ‘myusername’ is the name of your user account)
I had to root around in the Mail folder to find the folder with an Attachments folder in it and in that, buried in two subfolders which had numbers for names (280 and 2), I found the attachment.
Unfortunately a search in Spotlight only came up with the Attachment folder for my Eudora e-mail program and didn’t find the Attachments folder in the Mail folder.
You may be able to find the Mail/Attachments folder quickly if you sort the finder window my date. The conflicting attachment should be the last date you could use Mail since you haven’t been able to use it since.
Hope you find it and deleting it solves your problem.

Help! MAIL CRASHING upon launch

I let my automatic updater update my OS X.4.10 (was it .9 before?) system. Now whenever I try to launch Mail, it crashes within a few seconds. I ran my Disk Utility application to verify my disk (not permissions), as posted on another thread. No problems were found. So I reinstalled the update. Same problem. Mail crashes upon launch. HELP!!!

For what type of account - .Mac, IMAP or POP?
You can try to stop the fetching process via the Activity Viewer window but this will not resolve the problem when the fetching process resumes.
Assuming you have webmail access for this account, you can delete some of the messages available at the incoming mail server or if you can create server stored mailboxes for this account via webmail access, transfer a large portion of the messages available in the account's Inbox mailbox to the server stored mailboxes to reduce the number of messages available to be downloaded by Mail.
After the Mail.app download process has completed for a smaller number of messages, you can gradually transfer messages from the server stored mailboxes to the account's Inbox mailbox reducing the number of new messages to be downloaded by the Mail.app at one time.
Over 4000 messages in the account's Inbox mailbox at the server is a good deal of messages. Either this account is an IMAP type account with a large server storage space quota or if a POP type account, the server storage space quota must be large.

ITunes 12.1 freezing upon launch due to "determining audio volume"

My (Late 2011) MBP running Yosemite is freezing when I launch iTunes. It is 12.1, the latest version. Upon launch, it says "Determining Audio Volume" and is on the first of my several thousand songs. The spinning wheel eventually pops up and I am forced to forced shut-down my mac by holding the power button. I can't delete iTunes as it is "required by the OS" and I can't open it and go to the preferences to uncheck "soundcheck" because it freezes the entire mac upon launch.
Anyone experiencing the same issue or know what might fix it?

I had the same problem, but I think I've found a cure.
Even though Sound Check was disabled in preferences, iTunes would insist on Determining Audio Volume everytime it was launched. But there is also a 'Sound Check' preference in the Burn CD dialogue.
To turn it off you need to select a playlist, hit the Burn Disc button (bottom left) select Audio CD as the disc format and un-check 'Use Sound check'
Then you must hit the 'Burn' button (if you don't it will not remember the new settings) You can then cancel the burn by clicking the X in the itunes player window.
This has cured the problem for me

IE 11 desktop mode always freezes upon launch

Hello, I have created a shortcut to start IE11 in desktop mode, but there is a problem - when I have it set to open tabs from last session it freezes every time upon launch and I have to kill the parent process. Then it suddenly starts working and opens
the tabs from before.

According to your description, the Internet Explorer might be corrupted, I suggest to remove the Internet and reinstall it again in the following way:
Turn off Internet Explorer
1.Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.
2.Enter Windows features in the search box, tap or click Settings, and then tap or click Turn Windows features on or off.
3.In the Windows Features dialog box, clear the Internet Explorer 11 check box.

PGP crashes Mail.app upon launch

Since I installed PGP Desktop, Mail.app crashes upon launch. If I try to launch it again, it launches just fine. Usually with the second effort, sometimes it takes 3 times.
I removed the PGP.bundle and it's working just fine. Is there another solution to this problem or should I remove this permanently?

Try GPGMail - I have had no problems with it.

Mail quits upon launching

Yesterday out of the blue mail suddenly started quitting soon after launch. At first I thought it was only when I had preview open, but now it does it all the time.
I am going nuts! It might have started after emails from a designer arrived with some PDFs, but who knows, really. I am not very well versed in what goes on behind the scenes in the computer. Any help much appreciated.

Start your MacBook Pro in safe mode and try to open mail, if it works then open disk utility and repair your hard drive and permissions.

Mail crashes upon launching - PLEASE HELP!

Please could someone help me resolve this issue:
Every time I launch Mail it attempts to retrieve emails but then quits with the "Ignore/Report/Relaunch" error message.
So far I have repaired permissions, removed any third party Mail plug-ins.

I uninstalled Growl but this did not fix the problem so now I am back on Safari 3 and so far so good.

App Store Freezes Upon Launch

As soon as I downloaded and upgrade OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion my app store now becomes unresponsive whenever I try to launch. I'm also having issues with safari freezes at random, firefox won't launch. Google chrome is the only browser that seems to work.

Mail freezes upon IMAP download

dear all,
my mail.app does freeze every time i start it, or when my mail.app tries to synchronize more than one IMAP folder simultanously.
I have os 10.4.8 with all updates available. also, i do not use any plug-ins for mail.app

Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
What you say about synchronizing more than one IMAP folder makes me wonder. Go to Preferences > Accounts > Advanced. Is Automatically synchronize changed mailboxes ON or OFF? If ON, is there a reason you’ve chosen that setting?
You may also try the following to check whether the junk filter could have a bearing on this:
1. Either tell Mail to go offline immediately after opening it, or shut down your Internet connection and open Mail afterwards.
2. Go to Preferences > Junk Mail and disable junk mail filtering.
3. Go online again.

Mail crash upon launch

my mail app is configured for Lotus Domino, today I received a corrupt photo and it caused crashes in both Lotus Notes mail client and the apple mail app. I managed to delete the attachment through a webmail interface, and this enabled me launching Lotis Notes again.
Unfortunately, the apple mail app is still crashing when trying to download emails. Could it be that there are traces of the corrupt attachment in my laptop?

Safari Freezes Upon Launch

Sorry if this has been posted before, but I didn't see a discussion that pertained to my specific problem.
In the past day or so, whenever I have attempted to launch Safari, it has crashed shortly after loading my homepage. The length of time it takes to crash varies, sometimes the page will load more completely than other times, but in all instances I have been unable to navigate to other sites. During this period Safari response time slows to a crawl and other applications slow as well, but are still functional. After Safari crashes everything returns to normal. FireFox does not seem to be affected by whatever is causing difficulties in Safari.

The report mentions 3 com.apple.Foundation 0x9299d3b4 -[NSHTTPCookieDiskStorage(NSInternal) _saveCookies] + 292
in the crashed thread, which very often means a corrupted cookie file, perhaps just in the section for that particular site.
You could quit safari & trash the cookies.plsit file found in Home/Library/Cookies/ or if you don't want to lose all your cookies, I'd say try viewing the cookies via Safari - Preferences- Security, and remove those for that particular website. This itself might crash safari, in which case the trashing of the cookies.plsit is likely the only option.

Mail quits upon launch

This problem just hit me again for the second time. It doesn't happen frequently -- probably last time was a year ago. I know it happens to others.
The solution for me is to replace the pref file "com.apple.mail.plist"
However, I would like to note a caution for those bumping into this problem in the future. Be sure and use a backed up copy of this pref file to replace the existing file in your user Library preferences file. Just tossing this file leaves you in a major mess when restarting Mail.

Thanks for the response. I didn't get asked if I wanted to import anything. The only message I got when starting Mail up with the pref trashed was something like "Outbox" is being renamed to "Delivered".
Hmmm. I have no idea what that was about. But when Mail opened I had lost my Inbox messages and my sent messages, and I ended up with a "Delivered" box with nothing in it. Luckily I recovered completely by replacing the pref file with my fresh backup. This goes to show that even Mail and my computer don't know where the messages are!
A more simplistic design for Mail is in order. My thought is that there should be a "Mail" folder at the top level in the Finder window. This folder should contain the mailboxes as folders, and these should be the only real mailboxes on the computer. Messages should be stored as discrete files within these folders. If you toss the prefs, all that happens is that these mailboxes are rediscovered. I think I will submit this thought to Feedback. This whole thing is un-Mac like.

My iTunes freezes upon launch every time. What can I do to fix this?

This has happened twice now. The first time I fixed it by deleting the .itl library file and creating a new library. I don't want to have to do that everytime. I have the latest version of iTunes and a mid-2009 MacBook Pro with 8G of RAM and 750G HD.
Everytime I click on iTunes, the screen populates as it should and then I get the colorful spinning wheel. If I look in the task manager it says "iTunes not responding". Force Quitting and restarting does nothing. This time I noticed it occured when I tried to connect my phone to iTunes, the time before that was when I treid to add songs to my iTunes library.
What can I do to keep it from crashing?

have you updated to the latests version of itunes?
are you syncing over wifi if so have you tried doing so with the cable ?

Mail asks for password upon launch, then crashes when password is entered

For the last week or so I've been having an increasingly regular problem with Mail. Upon launching, the app opens a dialog window saying, "Mail can't connect to the Google account 'Gmail'. Enter the password for user (username)." Then when I enter the password, the app crashes. Sometimes clicking the "Cancel" botton allows the app to open, but sometimes that results in a crash as well. Also, when I can launch Mail successfully, sometimes when I try to send mail, the outgoing mail will sit in the Outbox unsent.
I've been getting these warnings with both my Yahoo and Gmail accounts. Until a few days ago I was using Yahoo as my primary account, but the inability to send mail caused me to switch to Gmail as my primary. After a couple days of smooth sailing, I'm now getting the same errors with my Gmail.
Any guesses? Thank you in advance.....

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
          SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
In the Console window, select
          DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.
