Mail freezes while opening windows
Mail froze during use while I had about 30 messages open. On many attempts to reopen Mail I find that it always freezes in the process of opening all the messages. I do not have a Library Preferences file com.apple.mail.plist that might allow me to correct this.

1. Launch Mail while holding the Shift key
down. This should prevent Mail from trying to select
any mailboxes or load any messages upon starting up.
This has no effect.
2. Go to Mail > Preferences > Viewing and
disable "Display remote images in HTML messages" if
it's enabled -- having this setting enabled is a
really bad idea for spam-related reasons anyway.
It is enabled, and clicking on it to disable it apparently registers, but, as with attempts to close messages, they have no continuing effect.

Hi,
My Mac Applications are freezing while opening. Mail, Safari, Calculator, Textedit, Preview, and Mac Help Viewer all freeze up either upon opening or as soon as I try to interact with them. Other apps like Photoshop, Illustrator, MSN Messenger, IE, and Word work just fine.
I have used Disk Warrior to reapair the HD and I have used Disk Utility to reapair permissions. I don't know what else to try.
Any suggestions?

Why does reader freeze while opening some pdf files and others open instantaneously?
I use pdf files created from CamScanner and shared from DropBox. In DropBox, many times (over 50%) while opening the PDF the process freezes and the error message is Adobe Reader is not responding. If you close the program, and re-open the file, it opens fine. I have saved these files to my computer and the same issue occurs. The files are 100-500kb, so I do not think size is the issue. I have reinstalled Reader (11.1.10) and there is no improvement.

EMac freezes randomly, open window turns into broken up jibber
My eMac freezes randomly, open window turns into broken up jibber (kinda looks like I put a photoshop filter on it or something). I can't force quit when it does this, no error message, I've repaired permissions. Any ideas?
This doesn't help. but my first thought on seeing your picture was 'addressing bit failure in the video memory'. Unfortunately, as you already know, the video 'card' on the eMac is a chipset mounted to the logic board, and the only repair I'm aware of is replacement. An Apple Service Provider could give you an estimate but unless your eMac is still within the standard one-year hardware warrenty or you purchased the three-year ApplceCare extended warrenty, that's not an attractice cost-benefit tradeoff.
On the chance that I'm wrong and it's some unusual system corruption, look again for the Hardware Test disc. It can be tricky figuring out where it is; on early eMacs it was always a separate CD, on recent eMacs it's a partition on the Restore DVD, and on models in between, it depends on whether the OS X Install disc was on a DVD or not. You might try booting from your OS X Install or Restore disc using Startup Manager to see if Hardware Test is on a partition.
If nothing else, booting off the OS X Install disk (as if you were going to run Disk Utility > Repair Disk to check the drive) should further confirm if the problem is in the video hardware rather than in the hard drive's OS: if the broken display appears when booted from the OS X Install disc, it's pretty certainly the video hardware. -
I posted a message in another topic similar to this one but I didn't notice it was for Tiger. Mail crashes while opening, I've tried to repair permissions , restart ect. I've also tried holding shift down while starting mail. Please Help!
BTW: I was asked if this is related to my other post "Oddness' well its not. I haven't had a kernel panic in 2-3 months I was just questioning what causes them.

In general, this looks OK, although the empty folder could be an irritant.
We could go a couple of ways: one would be to allow and force Mail to re-index this mailbox -- this would be done by deleting everything from the package EXCEPT the mbox file (which contains actual message contetn), and trying to launch Mail.
Another thing, and perhaps the next thing, is to remove the mail preferences, as mentioned earlier. To do this, first review all Mail Preference information to be sure you have it all documented and written down. Then quit Mail. In the Finder, open Home/Library and control-click on the Mail folder, and choose Duplicate -- drag the resulting copy to the Desktop strictly for temporary backup.
Next, open Home/Library/Preferences and locate the com.apple.mail.plist file, and drag it to the Desktop (likely to later delete). Launch Mail, and re-enter all your account set up info -- DECLINE any prompt to Import anything -- if the preferences are not empty at the launch of Mail, post back immediately. Once you have setup the account(s) again, and if it does not crash, then Mail should find everything already in the Mail folder, and this may resolve everything.
Ask any and all questions, and be comfortable that you know how to protect the messages saved -- that is what the copy dragged to the Desktop is about. -
Why does my entire computer freeze while opening or using After Effects or Premiere Pro CS5?
Just built a computer to meet all requirements for Adobe, Autodesk 3ds Max, and UDK, for school.

As for anything else giving me issues I haven't noticed anything besides a previous Graphics Card wasn't supported very well at all with 3ds Max, it would freeze while using the material editor which was fixed with replacing a GTX550 ti with a more compatible GTX480. Thought maybe the upgrade would also solve the fact that almost everytime I go to start up and/or use After Effects or Premiere Pro CS5 my whole system freezes. Whether or not I'm doing anything, it occasionally happened during "Scrubbing" the timeline, but also during the splash load up screen. Would take the time to wait for several minutes but nothing would change. Hard reboot was needed. After countless hours of searching online I stumbled upon what is called an "Unlock" for Premiere Pro/After Effects to allow accelerated GPU and CUDA cores. Simple procedure, seems as if things go faster... When it is working. But still, I encounter freezes on my entire system. It isn't a crash back to Windows or anytihng. Just a complete freeze on the entire system. I have not extensively used other Adobe programs besides Photoshop quite briefly just so I could open menus and force a freeze within 5 minutes and noticed nothing wrong. Which in AE & PP just running through any of the menu windows can quickly cause a sudden freeze.
note* I have alternated shutting off and turning on OpenGL as well as multiprocessing. Doesn't matter, it really doesn't seem to change much of anything.
Alas, I am absolutely sure, after checking and re-checking 80+ hours over the past 2 weeks that yes, everything is updated as far as each individual program, software or hardware will allow me to update them. I have reinstalled Windows as well as each program up to 3 times, and 1 system (restore?) I had Windows dump everything, started from scratch, backed up nothing. To reinstall everything from scratch, while not installed several "Utilities" or software components from stuff like the Motherboard and its XFAST USB/LAN or whatever, thinking maybe it was cluttering up anything.
Please, if anyone has any ideas upon this and could give me advice, whether you notice any other incompatibilities or anything. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
note* I do not have a wired Keyboard or mouse to disable the USB plugin and attempt that route.. at least not yet, its on my list of things to do. Also, I did run Memtest86+ during a boot and it claims that everything there had passed 100%. I am not "overclocking" anything either. I just wanted something I could work smoothly on, that would have decent rendering capabilities. I used to use my girls' laptop which was an HP with 3GB RAM and never experienced crashes or freezes and I could use AE, PPro, 3ds Max with some lag but not any issues. Rendering took forever on it, but I usually avoided that 'cuz it would start heating up pretty fierce. Saved my rendering for school computers where I could. But either way, now I have this expensive piece and it is getting frustrating that I cannot work on it.
note* Also, incase it does help, I have Windows as well as any major components installed onto the C: drive (aka SSD for my system) while all my secondary software, such as Adobe, Autodesk, etc. are all installed directly to my D: drive (or HDD) And everything is set up to go through Windows Firewall as well.Thanks all. I have just tried a few things, installing them onto the C drive as you all specified as not being one of them. I can understand it, but at the same time i have a classmate who has their software on a seperate drive and it runs smoothe. I'm on my second GPU in 2 weeks, unless I have terrible luck it seems doubtful being that I can run games and a majority of the software no problem. Through further testing around with a corded mouse and keyboard I've noticed the following...
The computer freezes entirely only when I'm performing a "scrubbing" action or using a mouse. Left clicking, scrolling, or moving it around. Otherwise if I do not use the mouse and I make all my actions, such as "scrubbing" in AE via "Page Up & Down" keys, there's no freeze and it preloads the preview no problem.
"Scrubbing" does not load a preview (the green bar doesn't load at all while scrubbing). But, also noticed no matter how smoothe everything is running in 3ds Max as well as PPro, once I start performing a "scrubbing" action with whatever timeline I use, it will definately freeze my whole computer, Windows and all. Hard reboot is neeed.
With having gone through 2 GPU's, done a full memtest via Windows 7 and Memtest86+, there seems to be no issue with my memory or GPU. Like I said, I've run UDK without an issue. Whether the editor or game. The USB doesn't seem like it's the cause, I've used both wireless as well as wired keyboards/mouse. Still freezes, but now only when using a mouse to "Scrub".
Is it possible my motherboard could be incompatible somewhere? I mean, really.. everything is brand new but 2 weeks of troubleshooting.
And I do plan on trying to run my software off the C drive, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't something else, like I said, I've seen and used a computer where it all runs off the D drive and it runs perfectly, actually better on his computer than off the C drive at my schools. So if it is an issue would it lie within the fact that I'm using an Nvidia GPU? Considering my classmate is using a AMD/ATI Radeon or something like that.

Mail freezes on opening - two different machines on same day
Trying to do some remote IT support for my coworkers with an odd Mail.app issue that can't be coincidental.
Both machines are MacBook Pros running 10.4.11 and should be fully updated. Both users are using Mail.app with POP e-mail through our domain name server.
When either/or opens their Mail application while connected to the internet they get a spinning beach ball and are unable to use mail. The odd things is, both users are on different sides of the country and the problem started at the same time with both of them. This problem does not occur when the machines are not connected to the net.
I figured that either they both received an e-mail that is blocking the system or have some conflict with their Verizon WAN cards. We have taken the following steps with one of the machines:
1. Start mail with the Shift key held down to deselect the mailboxes. Closed the preview window.
This does not have any effect while the machines are connected - there is still the same problem.
2. Delete the preferences file and reenter all account info.
This also had no effect.
Any thoughts on possible causes or solutions?

ChuckVerify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list. Leave checked (enabled) only the port configuration needed to connect to Internet and Built-in Ethernet (in that order if not the same), uncheck (disable) the rest of network port configurations, and see whether that helps — if it doesn’t, turn ON again the ones you want enabled.
Try launching Mail under the following conditions (you may need to force quit it first if it’s running) and post back with your observations:
A. Holding the Shift (⇧) key down until the main window appears. This tells Mail to not select any mailboxes or load any messages upon start up.
B. With no Internet connection.
You may also try trashing the Mail cache:
1. (Force) Quit Mail if it’s running.
2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Caches/.
3. Locate the Mail cache folder (not to be confused with the ~/Library/Mail folder where all your mail is stored) and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted after opening Mail and checking that all your mail is there, i.e. after making sure that you didn’t remove the ~/Library/Mail folder by mistake).
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library. -
AE freezes while Opening Project
Been working on a project these past two days. Nothing over the top complicated in it. Animating text/solids with an audio bed.
However this morning, while loading up the project, it froze at 33%. Had to Force Quit, try again. Nothing. I've actually taken the project file, brought it to another computer, which opened fine, then saved it as a new project, then brought it back to my computer which only let it work for about another hour - until giving me another freeze while working in the project.
I tried resetting my preferences, Purged the memory, brought to the other computer to transfer into a new file again. No go. Keeps freezing at 33%. Please Help
NickWhat Michael said - more info. Could be anything from some CoDec in your footage that differs across systems to the usual graphics card and driver issues to something being bad with your MediaCache....

Mail freezes when I even open it. I have read for hours the various reports of this problem but none of the solutions or descriptions seems to fit me or help.
The problem began just yesterday, but it would freeze when I would begin deleting messages, even though I could get past the opening. I was able to delete one or two, then it would freeze and I would have to do a force quit. Now, after quitting and opening a half dozen times, it freezes even when I try to open.
I have downloaded the latest Mail updates/software
I have allowed mail to rebuild the Envelope Index file
I have repaired permissions on the HD
I have rebuilt each of the In Box mailboxes
I have rebooted the computer without power attached, waited, attached power and rebooted.
I have seven POP accounts plus the .mac account
I can't figure out what else to do and this just started yesterday after a fairly flawless experience with Mail of late. Please help! I am paralyzed in keeping up with e-mails.I went to the Apple Store and the Genius Bar expert downloaded a recent "fix" for Mail that is not part of the software upgrades. You can get it by searching Mail for Mail Update downloads. He had to also import my mail boxes and preference list files after installing the update. It mostly seems okay now but I am not sure as I have just begun to use it again and it does not feel as stable as before. Just last night I notice a very strange thing. Any mail from amazon.com that I try to open or delete instantly freezes the program again and I have to force quit. I found one other reference to this on the discussion boards, but no explanation. I was able to manually drag the amazon.com e-mail to the trash and get rid of it but this morning another appeared, and also caused freezing. The amazon.com mail was not my initial problem, though it might have been part of it, since deleting anything would freeze things before, and finally I could not even launch mail without it freezing. That is now fixed, but there are still strange things going on here.

I refurbish companies retired computers as part of my business, part of our agreement is the machines all come blank, they delete partitions and wipe the entire hdd multiple times prior to my getting them, Most are as simple as reinstalling windows and any missing drivers and they are complete machines again, I currently have been working on an hp mini 5101 off and on for a couple of weeks now that I have been unable to get to take a copy of windows, and I have tried them all, xp, vista, 7, 8 and none have taken, I tried running ubuntu as a live cd and same as windows during the gui windows loading screen the machine freezes, I even tried popping the hdd out and throwing it into my other hp machine and doing a windows install with an hp windows 7 32 bit install disc, when installed hdd back in machine it again freezes when it reaches the animated windows graphic, I have searched forums, here and the internet in general, and have found no other mention of this occuring, i have found reference to the screen doesnt support it so people see the vista screen instead but i see the windows 7 screen then freeze during the animation. I am assuming (yes i know what happens when you assume, thats why i am here asking for help) this is somehow bios related from their prior use of the machine, I had some toshibas that come in that required a certian mode be changed from ahci to compatablity in order to install windows, I know that the company that had it got it with a vista key and an xp downgrade, I am trying to install 7 on it.
Any other information I may have left out let me know,

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP Mini 5101 and freezing after loading Windows. If it freezes on the loading screen it could be the graphics card. Have you performed a hardware test?

Mail freezes while attaching file in Maverick
Problem: When I attempt to attach a file in Mail it freezes and is not reponsive. It requires me to force quit the program.
Background: I just upgraded to OS X Maverick yesterday (10-24). Prior to this upgrade I did not have this problem. Mail ran great! The specific file I was attempting to attach was a 3.5MB video (Apple Quicktime MP4) file. I also attempted to attached a 3k txt file and it also froze the program. This happens each and every time I try no matter which e-mail account I am on.
Specs: Mac Pro Workstation, 2 x 3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 6GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM

I disabled (unclicked) saving mail to the servers in the Mail Account preferences for all of my different accounts. I went into internet preferences (in system preferences) and made sure all account were enabled (you may have to approve the passwords being sent despite the security warning... the window said I would have to re-enter the passwords, but I did not have to do so). And then in Terminal I typed the following:
defaults delete com.apple.mail ColorQuoterColorList
In my case it said not found, but I deleted the "ColorQuoterColorList" part and it seemed to work. I hope this helps. Mail seems to be working for now, and even seems a bit snappier.
Regarding Safari, I found advice to go through and clear out various PlugIns from the User Library Internet PlugIns folder and the System Library Plugins folder. I cleared out the old plugins that seem barely to be used, and updated some of the others, and this has seemed to help. Safari is now responsive. I saved all Plugins to folders on my desktop just to be sure I was not dumping something I might want to use. (I assume you know how to get into your user Library... hold down the option key while you click on the "Go" menu in the finder to see it). -
Lightroom freezes while opening certain catalogs
While I was helped tremedously by the Adobe Tech Support to unfreeze my catalogs, the issue returns. In order to unfreeze, I have to move my preview folder to the desktop (or another folder) and reopoen the catalog. This recreates the previews and allows the catalog to work.k I've cleared the catalog cache, set the previews to medium, set the default to discrad 1:1 preview every thrty days, all in an attempt to avoid the "freeze." But, it still occurs. if I have to reopen the catalof after a time. The catalog has over 30000 images and is an integral tool in my research on fin whales in NY. What can I do to avoid this pain in the butt problem?

The Adobe plugin in Internet Explorer is a bit different from the one in Firefox, however they're all made by Adobe and they usually come with Adobe Reader.
When you open a PDF file in Firefox, it "calls" Adobe Reader to help it read the file. In this case, the Adobe Reader takes over, and it is responsible for freezing your browser.
I suggest you try the last 4 solutions presented on the [[Opening PDF files within Firefox]] (start with "Re-install the plugin" through "Re-install Adobe Reader").

Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list. Try also turning OFF all the network port configurations except the one needed to connect to Internet and see whether that makes a difference — if it doesn’t, turn ON again the ones you want enabled.
Finally, try launching Mail under the following conditions (you may need to force quit it first if it’s running) and post back with your observations:
1. Holding the Shift key down until the main window appears. This tells Mail to not select any mailboxes or load any messages upon start up.
2. With no Internet connection. -
Mail freezes when opening certain messages
I have a few messages that I cannot open on mail , when I click on them the searching wheel starts to spin and freezes there and I need to force quit mail.

and this got me thinking that it might be a font issue. So I followed the instructions and looked at the font I have set as my default font, in my case Trebuchet MS, using Font Book (in your applications folder). Anyway, I noticed that there were two copies of "regular" installed. I disabled one of them and then I was able to respond to an email that was hanging all morning!!!!
So, look at your fonts for anything that looks suspicious like corrupted fonts (see document link) or duplicate fonts, etc....
I will report back if my Mail problems comes back again.
