Mail 'From' field problem

I am having problems with the 'From' field when messages are composed.
My set up is - I have one 'Inbox' listed under mailboxes on the left side of the screen in Mail.app.
I can expand this to show three further inboxes - 1) John@hotmail 2) Jane@hotmail 3) John@Google
Everything is good until my wife (Jane@hotmail) sends a message. She composes it and sets the drop down to her address - Jane@hotmail
When the recipient of this message replys, the message they send comes back to me at John@hotmail.
This is causing problems as people she sends messages to think they are replying to her when infact their replys are coming back to me! Also her friends think it is strange that I am sending them random cooking recipes etc when infact, I am not.
Can anyone help? I have checked all the accounts and they appear to be set up correctly with no obvious 'Jane' where 'John' should be or 'John' where 'Jane' should be. Thanks.

It may be that you have more than one outgoing mail account, and you're sending from the wrong one. From the Mail menu bar, select
Mail ▹ Preferences
The Mail preference dialog opens. Select the Composing tab from the row of icons at the top. From the menu labeled
Send new messages from:
choose
Account of selected mailbox
Note that this setting may have no effect if you start a new message while a VIP or smart mailbox is selected in the mailbox list. Those are saved searches, not actual mailboxes.
If the problem remains, select the Accounts tab in the preference dialog, then select the affected account in the list on the left.
In the Account Information pane, select the correct server in the menu labeled
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)
If there's only one server in the menu, select
Edit SMTP Server List...
and add a new server with the correct settings. If you're not sure how to do that, try the Mail Setup Assistant.
Another possibility is that the wrong card in your address book is selected as yours. Select your card in the Contacts application. Then select
Card ▹ Make This My Card
from the menu bar.

  • Apple Mail "From:" Field Customization

I have several IMAP accounts in Apple Mail. One of them is a Gmail account that I use as a conduit account for work, so when I reply to messages or compose new mail, I would like it to display a specific address in the "From:" field, instead of selecting it every time (I added my work account to Mail as well, though I forward messages to my Gmail account). So, for example, my Gmail account is "[email protected]" and my work email is "[email protected]".
When I compose messages from the Gmail account I would like the "From:" field to display "[email protected]" instead of "[email protected]". I am able to set up Gmail web interface to do this, but have not been able to set up Apple Mail to do the same (aside from instructing it to send messages using my work server, instead of the Gmail server).
In Lion, Mail was able to specify that address if I was replying to a messages sent to "[email protected]" but would show "[email protected]" for every new message. In ML, even replying to a message sent to "[email protected]" shows "[email protected]" in the "From:" field.
Does anyone know how to instruct Mail to choose only "[email protected]" when replying or composing new messages?
    Thanks for your help!

What you are describing is what is known as "articulation work". To quote Suchman, "'Articulation work' names the continuous efforts required in order to bring together discontinuous elements - of organizations, of professional practices, of technologies - into working configurations". That makes it sound better than it is.
Ideally, your non-profit needs a decent webhost like Dreamhost that can transparently integrate with Google Mail and make the whole problem go away.
    asmystiq wrote:
I configured Mail to use the work SMTP server to send messages from the Gmail account.
This is what is known as e-mail spoofing.
In the web Gmail interface, everything works smoothly.
Yes. Google is known for ignoring laws and facilitating any kind of network traffic, legitimate or not, in order to track activity and build value for its advertising business.
In Mail, even if the message was sent to [email protected], Mail replies show up with [email protected] in the "From:" field
Yes. That is the way it is supposed to work.
I also set up a rule for redirecting Sent messages to Gmail and moving the original copies to Trash on the work account. In Lion, all was well and the replies indicated [email protected] in the "From:" field and when I manually applied the rule to the Sent messages, they were sent to the Gmail account.
That's the "articulation work" in action.
I've looked at some of the discussion you linked (thank you for that) and found it enlighening, though I am not done reading all of it yet.
There are a number of different issues going on. Modern e-mail is extraordinarily complicated.
What I do now is not forward work email and keep the daily workflow focused on the Inbox of the [email protected] account, which handles replies appropriately. I then set up a rule to redirect any mail from the work account that is over a day old to the Gmail account. I then organize it on the web interface (which is not optimal, but cuts down my time spent on the web interface from "always" to once daily or so).
You could probably improve that by creating folders in GMail from within Apple Mail. Once you move an old message from the work server to GMail where you have more room, you can have additional rules to move it around within GMail.
The only real, definitive solution is to have more room for e-mail. You should contact your system administrator and suggest switching to GMail or Microsoft's version. Everyone hates dealing with e-mail. That is why these transparent e-mail services are so popular. Once it gets setup, all the magic happens in the name servers and all anyone ever sees is "work.org". Plus, you will likely gain some additional functionality that Microsoft Exchange supports that older systems do not.
In the interim, the best solution is to show the "Reply-to:" field and put your "[email protected]" address in there. Replies will be directed to that address but you will still have to move everything around after receipt. You should be able to configure your "work.org" e-mail system to automatically forward all you rmail to the GMail account. Combined with "Reply-to:", that is about as good as it is going to get.
If you need more clarification, let me know. Though I think that ML is behaving in a way that is not convenient and I don't see a way to create a hack to fix it. It seems like it would be an easy feature to add, but who knows what Apple folks are thinking...
What you have described is e-mail spoofing and Apple doesn't support that. No legitimate internet e-mail provider should support it. If Google does, then that is Google's problem. Most other e-mail servers would not allow that and that is why Apple doesn't support it. And, in general, Apple software is simply not very amenable to "hacks".
I have though about writing an Apple Mail plugin to automatically add a "Reply-to:" to certain e-mail messages. It will be a few months before I get time for that, so don't hold your breath.

    Here is the problem . . .
When creating a new email in the "Mail" App, the drop down box for the "From:" field displays a lot of address - some of them are wrong, some of them are obsolete, and some I would like to edit (or delete and re-enter the information).
The menu item "Window -> Previous Recepients" does not have any of the offending addresses listed in the cache.
If I create a new mail account using "Mail -> Preferences...", the email address and other details from the new account show up in the "From:" field drop down box when composing a new email. If I delete that new account, and restart the Mail App, the "From:" field drop down box still contains the information from the now defunct account.
If I pick a different account, and edit the information contained therein - say the "Full Name:" field, that new information does not necessarily change - specifically, if a double quote - " - has been accidentally inserted, or the "Full Name:" field used double quotes in the style "My Name" <[email protected]> then the double quotes stay stuck around the Full Name, even after being removed from the account details in Mail Preferences.
My guess . . . a file stored somewhere on the disc is keeping track of this information similar to the Window -> Previous Recepients information. This information I know how to prune (delete undesired records).
How do I do the same thing for the "From:" field?

How do you access your Email?
    * Do you log into an email service through a web browser?
    * Or do you use an email software client such as MS Outlook?
If you are logging into an email client through a web browser, then are you doing so in Internet Explorer?  Have you tried multiple browsers to make sure the problem doesn't follow?
I would also advise trying an alternate driver, such as the 990c driver, to see if it is a driver compatibility issue.  For information on how to use an alternate driver, see Shane_R's thread found here.  Hope this helps.

  • Aliases missing in 'FROM" field

My Mail "FROM" field used to have my .mac email plus my email aliases.
Now (after 10.6.5) I have lost the aliases, but have gained a .me email.
Is there a way to add the aliases back to the "FROM" field?
    Thanks.

Again, there are two obvious possibilities, and you'll have to debug this

First possibility is that the Unicode characters in your Java String object

displays properly in your mail reader.
If it does, then the characters are correct and the problem is that your
mail reader isn't displaying the same characters in the From field
    correctly.
If it doesn't, then however you've read those characters to compose
    that String is wrong.

  • How can I change the "From:" field in iOS Mail?

    This is a weird one.
I have a gmail work email account that has been set up for me. There's a primary email address assigned to it, and a secondary one (which is the one I want to use).
No problem at all sending from the secondary account on my MacBook Pro. I just hit the drop down menu by the "From:" field, and I can select it from there.
However, when I send from my iPhone, I'm only given the option of sending from my primary email address, not the secondary one. This is despite the fact that I've synced Mail accounts via iTunes.
Any idea how I might fix this so I can send from the secondary account on my iPhone?

First of all, please fill in the Computer Model and Operating System fields on your My Settings’s profile (and click Save). This is essential information that should always be provided when asking for help.
Now, what does “I can't change it” mean? What appears in the From header of the messages you send is determined by your Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Account Information settings...

  • How to use alias in "From" field when I send a mail with utl_smtp ?

    Hi all,
I'm using a PL/SQL package with an Oracle 11G database to send mails. It works fine but instead of use of my mail in "From" field like "[email protected]" as sender E-mail address, I would like to have "Toto" in the sender address. I tryied to use utl_smtp.mail(l_connection, '<toto> [email protected]') but it doesn't work. The only way I can send mail is when I set utl_smtp.mail(l_connection, '<[email protected]>') directly. When I use the Alias, I have an error from smtp server telling that I use a bad syntax address.
Does someone know how to use the alias ? Where do I do a mistake ?
    Thank you for your help.

  • Setting From field in Mail

I recently changed from cable (optonline.net) to DSL (verizon.net), because the price went from about $50/month (cable) to $20/month (DSL).
The email address I’d like to advertise to the world is one based on a university. It’s not a real address, but a forwarding address that I can change when my real address changes.
I inserted my university email address in:
    Mail->Preferences->Accounts->Account Information->Email Address
The above worked with the cable provider, but does not work with the DSL provider. Here I get the error message:
Cannot send message using the server version
The sender address was rejected by the server outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net.
Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be delivered.
Sending from: David Kallman <email removed>
    Any suggestions? I tried setting:
    Reply To -> email removed
This works sometimes, but not always. The Reply To field seems to be ignored by some mailers.

I'll close the two items above.

I am having the same problem but with a twist. I have about 5 different email accounts for both business and personal emails. I want my business mail to look like it is sent from my different domain name addresses and not the imap gmail account to which it is forwarded before I download it into Apple Mail.
Previously somehow the old Gmail pop account set up under Tiger allowed me to permanently change the From To field but now I have to change it each time.
I have tried the Reply To field but that needs to be changed each time as well.
I tried changing the "Send new mail from" under Mail Preferences Composing but that affects all my outgoing mail not just a particular account.
    Has this changed with Leopard?
In case you are wondering why I don't forget the forwarding thru Gmail, I can't because now so many of my emails have been going out with the gmail email address instead, that I might miss mail if I did. I also needed to switch from Gmail Pop to Imap to be able to see all my emails with an iphone and 2 macbooks. And Mobileme just adds another complication in the middle.

  • Shortcut for changing "from" field in Lion Mail?

I manage a number of email accounts from Mail, and frequently need to send messages from one account, and then another account, and then another account ... In Snow Leopard, I enjoyed creating shortcuts to change the "from" field of an outgoing message.  For example, in the keyboard system preferences pane, I assigned the command "My Name <[email protected]>" the shortcut of "SHIFT+CMD+X".  That way, while writing an email, if I noticed that it was about to send from the wrong account, I'd just hit the keystroke instead of grabbing my mouse.  Mail apparently knew what I was doing, because on the drop-down tab for "From", each of my mail accounts also showed the custom assigned shortcut.
This ability seems blocked in Lion.  Whenever I try to re-create these shortcuts in the preferences / application-shortcuts pane, they won't work!  What's worse, whenever I quite and re-open System Preferences, I find that my shortcuts have been re-assigned an extra open-bracket, such as: ">My Name <[email protected]>".
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?  Is it possible to re-create these shortcuts in Lion Mail?

So Entourage can go to the previous message?  How do you do that?
I can't stand that Mail always goes to the next newest message after deleting.
Every other email program I've ever seen (including Entourage - see below) can do this.  Why can't Apple?  I don't want to touch the mouse most of the time because it really slows down work to move ones hands back and forth.   I did a quick web search and found these shortcuts for all the major programs.  If you know of any other program besides Apple Mail that doesn't have this, let me know.
Until then, if Outlook, Outlook Express, Entourage, Sparrow, Postbox, and Thunderbird have had this, what's Apple's problem adding it?

  • How to set a default "from" field on outgoing Mail message

i read through the last few pages of this support forum and googled my topic but i havent found a suitable solution.
in Mail v 3 (3.4) there is a "From:" field in any outgoing mail. very useful for those of us with multiple non-accounts and/or .Mac aliases. i generally set a specific outgoing mail server (so that field is removed from outgoing email).
my problem is how to set a default outgoing email address so that my recipients always get from a certain (eg work) email address when i am at work. at work, anything i send, i want to show my work email without always having to manually select the "FROM" field in the outgoing email.
( aside: i had read that Mail version 3 was supposed to auto-select any reply so that the reply would come from the same email i orginally sent as. this does not work on my mac.)
This problem is exacerbated as Mail auto-rotates between my 4 email accounts/aliases (which are all listed (correctly) in the FROM field. it would be great if this list could be fixed with a default FROM address.
eg i send an email from my work email address (FROM: [email protected]) the next email i send will be rotated through my list of .mac aliases. i.e. the next email i send will not be from [email protected], but from [email protected] the next time it might move on to [email protected] or it might revert to [email protected]
any thoughts on how to fix?
i have tried deleting the home/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist. that is fine, but any .mac aliases (which i do use, but i dont want to be listed in the "FROM" field) are listed in the "FROM" field, and are auto-switched through my Mail again.
i looked through Rules and Automator, but no obvious help there. any thoughts?

Did you try Preferences > Accounts > Account Information and entering these other email aliases in the Email Address: field, separated by commas? That would give you a pop-down menu in the New Message window letting you choose which alias to use when sending an email.
If you go to Preferences > Composing, there should be a pop-down menu near the middle of that window labeled "Send new mail from:" which will let you choose any email address you have entered in the Account Information field mentioned above, or "Account of last viewed mailbox" as the default.

If it does, then the characters are correct and the problem is that your

  • Problem with the "from" field after upgrading to IOS 7

    Dear list members,
For years I have been using multiple e-mail accounts with my iPhone 4 without any trouble. However, after I upgraded to IOS 7, a strange bug is happening.
When I try to send an e-mail from my iPhone, using my iCloud account, to another person or another account of mine, every time I type an address in the "to" field, the "from" field changes automatically to some of my other accounts (most of them from Google). Then I have to correct the "from" field every time, which is very annoying.
Is there a way to solve this bug?
    Thank you for your attention.

I have a similar problem, using iPhone 4 and iPad 3. I can connect to the iPhone hotspot (iPhone show the blueish bar on top of its screen and says 1connection is active). So far so good, BUT, the iPad gets no symbol (the chain showing its linked) nor internet access. Sometimes the symbol comes but still no internet. By resetting the iPhones network settings I get it to work immidiately after, but after putting my iPad to sleep there will be the same issue over again. Please come up with a solution. Maybe I need to restore both devices? I don't like the idea though. It just works, huh?!?!?

  • Mail not displaying names in "From" field correctly

In my address book, I have people's names and their E-Mail addresses. It automatically completes the field when I send it; however, when I receive E-Mails from my contacts, it doesn't fill their name in. For instance, sometimes it just lists their E-Mail address, even though it is in my Address Book. Sometimes it gives the name they entered on their E-Mail server, not as the name I gave them.
Is there any way to rectify this problem?

Does that mean that I am going to have to tell ALL of my friends here in Japan to mess around with the way there phone stores/sends their addresses? OR will I be forced to get Docomo, AU and all of the mobile carriers in Japan to change their system???
There has to be a better answer...
If anyone in Japan has sorted this out, please let me know.
