Mail "From" name displayed oddly

Virtually all my emails, when received from someone in my Address Book, display the From name as "Joe Bloggs" - or whatever, as shown in my Address Book - both in my in-box and in the email itself when the email is opened.
So far, so good.
However, in at least one case the name is displayed correctly in the opened email, but as <[email protected]> and not as Joe Bloggs in my mailboxes. This is by far the minority and most appear as expected.
What have I done wrong with that Address Book entry? It looks fine to me, but I presume that I am overlooking something?
Looking through my Mail folder for this sender, I note that they are all displayed as being from Joe Bloggs, as expected, up to 22 September 2006 and as <[email protected]> since 21 November 2006. That's probably totally irrelevant, but there it is for what it is worth!
I use Mail v2.1 (752/752.2), Address Book v4.0.4 (485.1) and MacOSX.4.8 Build 8L127.

Thanks, Allan.
I infer, therefore that my sender must have changed their details at around the time the change took place? Their email address (a work address) is the same and I haven't, to the best of my knowledge, changed anything at my end - and in any event if it's theor client that makes the call then whatever I did wouldn't make any difference.
Irritating, but at least I know I've [probably] not done anything stupid!
I'm assuming the "Where in Mail" question is aimed at Kevin?

  • Adjust E-Mail "From" name to  fit to corporate standard

    Hi my ABAP Friends,
we're using the SAP WebAS ABAP standard functionality Alerts to notify our Users about important updates on business objects (in our case CRM Opportunities). Alerts are triggered using the function module SALRT_CREATE_API. The user can setup the alerts to be sent also as an E-Mail. These mails are successfully sent to the recipients.
    Now here is my issue:
Our corporate standard defines that E-Mails that are sent must display the From like "LastName, FirstName" i.e. an E-Mail
from me would appear as "Wolf, Gregor". Unfortunately E-Mails sent from an SAP System do not follow this
guideline. The Name displayed in the From field is taken from the SAP User Data (Transacton SU01) NAME_TEXT field which is automatically filled and not editable. The standard procedure fills the NAME_TEXT with "FirstName LastName".
That results in the problem that when our business users sort their E-Mails by the Sender Address they have to look into two places to find all E-Mails from one user. First they have to look for i.e. "Wolf, Gregor" (Standard Outlook E-Mails) and then for "Gregor Wolf" (SAP E-Mails).
I've already checked if there is a BAdI which I can use to create the NAME_TEXT according to our Corporate needs. But I haven't found one. I would like to know how we can adjust the format of the From field to our corporate needs.
    Best regards
    Gregor Wolf

    Hi Fred,
that's amazing, for my first answer to this question from OSS I've waited 16 days. You've answered in 16 minutes. :-). And OSS didn't even thought in your direction.
I've maintained now a new Name format in Transaction SA13 with 3 Lines:
    1     NAME_LAST
    2
    3     NAME_FIRST
Unfortunately Transaction SA13 does not support to maintain the Field VALUE of Table T005O. But SE16 allows a direct maintenance. So the content of T005O is:
    LFDNR FIELDNAME  VALUE
    1     NAME_LAST
    2           ,
    3     NAME_FIRST
The result when I maintain the Format name and Format country is now "NAME_LAST , NAME_FIRST". Unfortunately there is a space between NAME_LAST and the ",". Any thoughts how the function module ADDR_PERSON_NAME_FORMAT can be influenced on that behaviour? Or do I have to use the Enhancement Framework to get to my goal?
    Best regards

You need a separate email address but you've already ruled out that solution.

  • Different "From" names in Mail

All my mail is forwarded and funneled thruogh gmail, and then to my Mac Mail client. I have configured all my email addresses in the account tab by separating them with a comma. Great. Now I can send mail from all my email addresses... except, they will all show that they are from me, listing my personal name.
I want some of the addresses to be associated with my company name, however, and not my personal name.
How do I go about this?

Unless you really just absolutely want to have your sent emails say they're from "Trevor C" or from "Trevor C's Spouse", you could just delete the full name entry from that account in Mail's Preferences (i.e., set full name field to null), and then any sent messages' "from" address will simply appear as being from [email protected] or from [email protected], depending on which "account" (alias) you selected in the "Account" pull-down menu. This would be, I think, the easiest patch for you to implement.
People who get email from me get mail from "[email protected]" and not from "J.V." Personally, I hate the full name crap and wish there were a way to display the "from" field in my inbound message viewer pane in email address format, rather than full name format. But that's just me.

  • Two alias in Mail: how to show different "from" names?

I've been reading various threads about aliases in mail, but none have exactly described my situation. What I want to be able to do is set up aliases in my one account and have the mail shown as "from" a different name depending on which alias I've used.
    Here's my current set-up:
    Account Type: POP
    Description: POP account
Email address: [email protected], [email protected]
    Full Name: myname & mywifesname
    Incoming mail server: pop.domain.com
    username: xxxxx
    password: xxxxx
    outgoing mail server: smtp.domain.com
So, we can each send email "from" our own email address, but they're all marked as from "myname & mywifes name". How do I change it so if I select "[email protected]" the mail is shown as simply from "myname" and vice versa.
I understand from reading other threads that the one thing I can't do is set up a separate account for each, as they will both have the same incoming server and username. (Which was exactly what I could do back in the dark ages of Outlook Express.)

  • Odd nesting of inboxes and To Do in Mail from spammy account

I have an email account of a client that is not used frequently and has gotten woefully clogged with spam  In addition, over a period of times, we have deleted then reconfigured the account in a single machine a bunch of times or set it up on (and deleted and reconfigured) on different machines.  Of course, we have reset the password countless times.  Mail has not cooperated well through this often unable to sync or authenticate the account.  Had this been a critical email account, we would've resolved this sooner, but it's been on again/off again.  At the same time, we don't want to blow away the entire account from the server.
At this time, we are completely unable to get Mail to access this account.  Another email client, Thunderbird, has succeeded (and failed on and off).  I've noticed over time that the account seems to have several "Apple Mail To Do" 'mailboxes' and "INBOX" listings when displayed on some browser-basedemail readers (attached is the image from the reader "Horde").
Also, when we are able to sometimes sync with Mail, from the activity viewer, I can see a bunch of messages displaying something like "traversing mailbox hierarchy" and such.  I can't recall all of the messages and I'm unable to get a screenshot from Mail b/c it is not accessing the account at this time.
My question is, is there some kind of structure that Mail is creating for this account?  Is it possible that the multiple configurations create new sets of "Apple Mail To Do" folders?  Is there some way to manage/edit those?  While this account has a lot of spam in it, it may also have other issues which could be result of this extra overhead of files.  Just thinking.....
    Thanks in advance!
    Lee

In Mail Preferences/Accounts/each GMail account, set up the SMTP Outgoing Server for each account separately, going into SMTP name/edit/Advanced and specify the Username of each account.  The Outgoing servers must be two different servers, authenticated by the Username and Password of each.
Otherwise, the GMail SMTP server will change the from address to that of the account where the SMTP server was setup.

i have a Q10 with an exchange Account configured. Mail works fine from the hub but when i use the search feature of the q10 by typing "email [name of contact]" the compser opens but i cannot send. the account field is empty and when i press send the button gets greyed out. the email is not sent.
the problem seems to be that the default-account setting is not recognised when you use the search-shortcut-feature of the q10. when i compose a mail from the hub the account-field is filled right.

Looking at a network trace I see the EHLO command being sent as
    EHLO test[0xe9][0xdf]\r\n
where the machine name is testéß. From a Unicode table 0xe9 0xdf = é ß.
I found a reference from RFC 5336 (SMTP Extension for Internationalized Email Addresses) that says the hostname in the EHLO must be in the form of ACE (ASCII-compatible encoding) labels:
    3.7.1. The Initial SMTP Exchange
When an SMTP connection is opened, the server normally sends a
"greeting" response consisting of the 220 response code and some
information. The client then sends the EHLO command. Since the
client cannot know whether the server supports UTF8SMTP until after
it receives the response from EHLO, any domain names that appear in
this dialogue, or in responses to EHLO, MUST be in the hostname form,
i.e., internationalized ones MUST be in the form of ACE labels.
ACE encoding for my machine would be: java.net.IDN.toASCII("test4éß") --> "xn--testss-eva".
I'm not sure if this RFC applies in this case - I didn't know anything about the guts of SMTP until yesterday - but it makes sense that you'd need to escape the hostname in the EHLO until you can negotiate capabilities.
Looking at the JavaMail API it seems that if I were to call SMTPTransport.helo(String domain) myself without going through the higher-level Transport class that maybe I could work around the issue, but I haven't looked into it enough to know if that's feasible.
Is anyone familiar with this problem? I'm using JavaMail 1.4.2 on Windows 2003 and Exchange as my SMTP server.
    thanks,
    Eric

Same problem here (or at least in part). Some .mac folders did no longer show any messages, while they were there and could be seen online and with Thunderbird. After your remark I changed the name of a folder which contained a "´" and now it works. It is really strange because there is another folder with a "¨" in it which does not work (I will test if the name change works with this folder as well in a minute) whilst there is another one with such name which works fine. The update really messed up Mail and in Dutch we just use such characters so Mail without supporting them will be rather useless for me...

  • Mail.app Is Showing Wrong "From" Name

    I'm having a heck of a time with Mail.app.
The latest bug is that in the list of incoming mail, it occasionally shows the wrong From name. When I open it up, it shows the correct name.
    Any ideas?
And I still can't get it to send mail from the proper email address. I has one it likes, and will not deviate.

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:
              Envelope Index
              ExternalUpdates.storedata
Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Typically, the process takes a few minutes, but it may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. In that case, you may be able to speed things up by temporarily adding your home folder to the Privacy list in the Spotlight preference pane. Remove it when Mail has finished importing.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.
