Mail frustrations

After my Powermac G5 1.8 DP logicboard fritzed last week I TDM backup to wife's Imac 2.4 Intel Core 2 Duo. OSX 10.5.7
Set up second user and resolved issues with mail by reading posts here and investigating Mail preference settings myself.
So, I am trying to do the same in the iBook G4 running 10.4.11
No luck with the second user.
Mail tells me it cannot connect to server with ports 110 in and 25 out.
put cache and envelope index on desktop and reboot allowed incoming. no send.
looked at preferences , quit mail, open mail, no luck.
tried cache out, etc. now will not gather incoming mail or send.
very frustrating.
can use firefox to access accounts, but would like to resolve this hiccup.

Apple Mail has a *NEVER-ENDING* Password Problem.
For years I've been trying to solve this problem - and there is no known solution.
Apple Mail continuously fails to log into a POP server - then demands you to enter the password AGAIN & AGAIN & AGAIN & ...
When that fails - the ONLY solution is deleting the account - and creating a new account with the same settings. Then ... it ALWAYS happens again. Could be a week or 10 minutes - and the hassle continues forever.
At docs.info.apple.com ... Apple offers 4 "suggestions" at fixing this. The only one that works is the 4th; deleting the account. The more accounts you have, the more you have to keep repeating this - over and over.
I know from experience what the problem isn't - it's not the mail servers, it's Apple Mail's failure with the servers. Any hiccup (busy server) and Mail goes on tilt. I'm an affiliate marketer and have different email accounts with different domains - several accounts with my ISP and several other accounts. Apple Mail continuously fails with every single account - except ONE: machighway.com. "They use a Mac server."
With any POP account using UNIX, Windows or NT servers, Apple Mail's password nightmare continues like clockwork.
Look at the categories under Apple Discussion. See anything missing? You guessed it - not a whisper of Apple Mail. There is nothing for "Email password errors" at support.apple.com - and Apple Mail isn't even listed under Products for Advanced Search at their support page.
Apple has been aware of this problem for YEARS and nothing has been done so I've had it - and I'm done with this piece of junk and looking for a real email client.

  • Apple Mail Frustrations

My wife and I are pulling our hair out trying to operate within Apple Mail. We are recent switchers and for some reason, the Mail program is causing the most trouble. Below are a few of our problems:
    1. Her Address Book decides to delete all of the entries. She loses everything except for the Apple card and her personal card. We must revert to a backup.
    2. When people view her emails and they have extra question marks throughout the entire message that were not typed. I've read about this in the forums but I haven't found a definitive fix for it. I can't even find an Apple acknowledgement for it.
    3. This is a big one - sending emails using iPhoto 6.
If she is in iPhoto and wants to send a picture, she chooses the picture and clicks the "Send via email" (or whatever the button is). It creates a new message in Apple Mail. The picture displays within the body if the email and she is able to scale it down using the functions within Apple Mail. She is able to add text to the body of the email, etc. All is good.
She sends the email to me at work. I use MS Outlook XP on a Windows machine. When I receive the email, the picture comes as an attachment and not within the body of the email. Also, the comments she added to the email as well as her signature appear as attachements with a "ATTxxxxxxx.txt" type of file name. There are about 4 of them. One has the email text, another has the same text only with font information within it like:
    <fontfamily><param>Lucida Grande</param>
    </fontfamily><fontfamily><param>Helvetica</param>
    </fontfamily>
    It's ugly!
Now, as a test, within Apple Mail, she creates a new email. She clicks the add attachment button and navigates to where the picture resides and attaches it. Again, it appears within the body of the email and she can scale it. She can also add text to the body, etc. She sends that to me at work again. This time, the picture displays within the body of the email as expected, her signature displays correctly within the email, there are no extra attachments or any "ATTxxxxxxx.txt" attachments.
Why are we having so many problems using Apple Mail? These little things are causing us the most problems. They are very frustrating. We just want to use the email program and send photos, etc without thinking about it. It shouldn't be this difficult.
I'm just tired of my wife calling me at work crying because she can't get email to work right, and her Address Book decides it delete all of the entries from her address book and she has to start over (or revert to a backup).
Thank you for listening and helping.

    Thanks for your reply.
Yes, I have been performing the daily/weekly/monthly maintenance.
The address book losing data is somewhat of a less concern for me. I always have backups. I'm just trying to get a good setup for my wife so she can send any kind of email she needs to and have it display reliably on whichever platform/client the receipient happens to be on. Yes, most of her contacts are Windows users who are probably using Outlook or Outlook Express, but there are a few Mac users as well.
I have run a number of tests using my Outlook at work and various web-based clients (Gmail and the web interface to my POP email) and Outlook is definitely the odd ball of the group -- surprise.
Some emails will display with pictures as attachments while others display with the picture embedded in the email. There is also an issue when you can type text at the top of an email, the embed a picture in the middle and type more text below the picture. When Outlook displays it, the text at the top displays in the body of the email, the picture shows as an attachment, and the text typed below the picture also displays as an attachment with an ATTxxxxxxx.txt file name. The contents only shows what you typed below the picture.
There's something with the attachment and the way Outlook displays it that's causing the problem. I even have it more narrowed down that this....
If the email is RTF with some sort of formatting in the message (colored text, etc) the entire message will display correctly in Outlook. The text at the top displays correctly, the picture shows as an embedded image, and the text below the picture correctly. However, if the email is Plain Text, it shows the extra attachments as described above with the ATTxxxxxxx.txt files.
I have also been switching between Text Encodings to try and figure this out. I saw a number of posts saying to use UTF-8 encoding. I have sent test emails using both Automatic as well as UTF-8 and I get the same results. I have also tried "Windows Friendly Attachments" and depending of the email, it still displays incorrectly.
There is also something strange with sending emails using iPhoto rather than attaching a photo through Finder. The email "Content-Type" is different between the two and both display differently in Outlook. If you attach through iPhoto, you get the extra TXT attachments, no matter the message format. If you attach via the Finder, if the message is RTF with formatting, it will display correctly. Strange!!
There's definintely an opportunity for improvements here. Problem is, I have no idea where to start. Hopefully someone has this figured out and may have some ideas.
    Thanks!

  • Address Book and Mail frustrations

How do I make it so that whatever name I put in my address book and assign to a person it stays that way FOREVER?!? I'll go into address book and change it but as the person emails me back with whatever name they have set to it, it changes again. For example lets say my friend "John Doe" emails me and it comes up as John Doe. I go into address book and just make it say "John". The next time he emails me, it comes up as John Doe again. Can't address book be permanent and unwavering? I just want my address to be what I made them and nothing else.

The deleting of "John Doe" in "Previous Receipents" and the change in "John" in Address Book only helps for a short time - as soon, as John Doe sends a mail again named "John Doe", the Address Book entry will be manipulated again from "John" to "John Doe".
How in the world do i prevent this? How can I switch off this hole annoying and manipulating "Previous entry" thing, which always messes up my Address Book? I do not want to change Address Book entries and clean the Previous Receipent list each and ever day...
    HELP, PLEASE!!!

  • E-mail frustration

I had to hard reboot my phone the other day. Now having an issue with 2 things....
    1. Can't get my text messages to stop coming in via email.
I have tried to follow the steps on here-select email, settings, choosing account, scrolling down to more settings, I can't find the SMS uncheck
              button.
    2. When I delete an email on my phone its now deleting in my actual online account.  I don't want it to do that but I don't really anything obvious to uncheck to make it stop.

Thanks for reaching out to us, jennjenn1023!
I apologize you are having issues with the phone since the reboot.
When you get the messages in the email, is it a work email or personal email?
I ask this because I have seen this happen with corporate email before.
Please follow below steps to stop receiving SMS from device to Exchange email inbox:
Settings -> Accounts -> Exchange account -> select email -> Uncheck 'Sync SMS' option.
As far as the email that is deleting from the online account, is that your personal email address or a corporate email?

  • Junk Mail in Inbox

Starting on December 26, 2012 I began getting 8-10 spam emails within a one hour period. I have a @me.com account. The spam mail I received was not marked as Junk and showed up in my inbox. After researching, I found that you could "train" the mail to what was junk so I began marking all the spam emails and leaving them in my inbox. It is now Jan 4 and I am still receiving 6-8 spam emails EVERYDAY with none marked as junk and nothing in my junk folder. There has been no change with the way @me.com is treating my spam. I did try to change the Preferences to "Move it to the Junk Mailbox" but it stayed in my inbox anyway so I changed it back after reading about the training process.
I have had Macs for a long time but as far as technical stuff I am a newbie and don't know a ton of the intricate stuff like permissions or whatever so please be gentle with your replies and instructions! Thank you for any ideas!
Here are my current Preferences in Mail:

    Hi Tom & David
Sorry to confuse you guys. What I'm saying is that my INBOX shows all mail, every thing, Junk and all.
But I also have a mailbox called JUNK which the mail get filtered too.
So if I go into JUNK I will see only the JUNK filtered emails. And if I go into INBOX I see every email.
What I would like it to do is have my JUNK mail only appear in the JUNK MAILBOX.
I have other MAILBOXES as I'm trying to create an organised work space, so email that I get from REDROCK should go to the REDROCK mailbox, which it does.... but it also shows up in the INBOX.
I'm trying to cross over from Entourage because it's FIND function is useless but I'm finding Apple's MAIL frustrating as I doen't want to see all my mail in the INBOX.
I'd like to only see MAIL that has not been filtered in the INBOX, not every email that I've received.
I've check the settings and have not got JUNK on TRAINING, its set to MOVE TO JUNK MAILBOX AUTOMATICALY.
I'm hoping MAIL can be better than Entourage but it appears its filtering isn't up to scratch.
I hope this makes sense now.
    Thanks for your help.
    Kind regards
    Rory

  • How do you show sender in Mail message list

Hi I've recently migrated to Lion and am finding the new layout of Mail frustrating as it shows my mail by the recipient rather than the sender.  As the recipient is ususally me, I have what appears to be a inbox of emails to myself but I have to open each email (or preview it) to reveal who actually sent it to me.
Is there a way to have the sender (From field) showing in the list rather than the To field?
I need to have them sorted by Date so that the most recent messages are at the top.  But when I choose View > Message Attributes the option to select "From" is already ticked but it is also greyed out.
I have temporarily fixed this by using the classic view but I would really like to know how to do this in the new view?

    > Is there a way to have the sender (From field) showing in the list rather than the To field?
The default view for Inbox (and all other folders except for Sent) includes the sender on the first line in bold. It should look like the picture below. Microsoft Outlook is the sender of this message.
If your Inbox shows the recipient on the first line, something is very wrong. I don't know any setting that would cause that to happen. Just for fun, with Inbox selected, check Mailbox > Use this Mailbox For.
What do you see in the Inbox?  What email service?

  • Mail keeps deleting the password for iCloud?

Using mail on an iMac, mail will not keep the iCloud password and deletes it after it has been saved. It also keeps taking the accounts offline when I am trying to send e-mail frustrating! Why not just log onto the accounts as outlined in the preferences.

Thanks for the reply but it seems that something else is also going on.
When this little window appears asking for my password I am given the option to "cancel" but nothing happens if I click that box. I'm reallly given only two options: typing my password into that box or cancelling the MAIL program, shutting down my internet connection and then re-opening MAIL. If I do neither of these I'm frozen.
If I restart the program I find two things. All accounts are off-line and my password has disappeared from Preferences?Account Information. If I re-type my password and click all accounts back on-line I'm okay.
But what bothers me most is the removal of my password from Preferences. How could some failure to connect to the server be responsible for this? Couldn't the problem somehow be in the MAIL program? Maybe this problem is triggered by a failed connecion to the server, but how could anything like that affect settings in my program? If something happening out there in server-land could erase my password I almost feel like I'm being hacked.
    John
    John
if go to Preferences/Account Info I see that my password has been removed. I have to re-enter it there and then instruct accountsto go back on-line(I have two accounts active adn it will always be only the password that had been challenged that is gone; the one for the other account is still there.)
So, difficulty connecting to the server or not, ow could that effectively change settings in my program - that is, the password I have set in my Preferences. Whatever is happening is somehow corrupting the MAIL program.

When sending email from the Mail App or through other Apps on my iPad, my default From: address will change when I enter a To: address.  This sometimes leads me to send the email from the wrong outgoing email account.  It is frustrating and poor design, especially since I had already checked the From: address.

3rd party email addresses have to be deleted on every synmced mac product, although I have 1and1.co.uk and my imac updatetes the mails in that account from mac mail.
Yahoo etc is a 2 step deleting process but good to get your emails pushed when on the go.

  • HT4759 I want to use icloud mail on both iPhone 4s AND my pc. icloud mail on PC is mega glitchy and frustrating because my PC is ancient, I run XP, & these DO NOT MEET req's for iCloud.  Is there a email platform that will run well on both XP and iPhone?

I NEED to use icloud mail on both iPhone 4s AND my PC. I need to use both.
Trying to use icloud mail on PC is mega glitchy (STOP SCRIPT WARNINGS EVERY FEW MINUTES) and frustrating because:
      1.  my PC is ancient (but nicely refurbished/fast)
      2.  I run XP  (with both Firefox and Chrome- newest versions)
      3.  thusly, I DO NOT MEET SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS for iCloud.
In my passed attempts I found that
    1. Yahoo doesn't work well on iPhone
    2. Gmail doesnt work well on iPhone.
I must be missing something... an app or... maybe a donated/ NEW FREE MAC!  (That would be sweet!  Ha.)
Is there an email platform that will run well on both XP and iPhone?
or... Please say it isn't true: I would love a Mac tablet or desktop. We have no money for a mac. SOL?   Is this iCloud apple tech only for wealthy middle class and above who can afford to have the newest and best of everything?

@Naiks, having suffered through unsuccessful synching attempts for Calendar and Contacts myself, l would suggest you try the following:
UNINSTALL iCloud control panel from your PC. Seems silly, but do it.
Go into Outlook, and look at the very top menu. Click FILE, then ACCOUNT SETTINGS, then click the popup box.
You will see a list of all your email accounts. Make sure that ONE of them has a checkmark against it. If not, select the account your want as your default, and click "set as default.
Exit out of Outlook and reboot your machine.
Now reinstall iCloud, check CALENDAR and CONTACTS, and do as instructed when prompted.
Reboot for good luck and now launch OUTLOOK. All that remains is to locate your iCloud Contacts and Calendar files, and make them your default.
IMPORTANT: Don't panic if you can't find your contacts -- they're there. Click CONTACTS and you'll see you have several available contact files. Locate the one label "iCloud" in grey type. Right-click on it, select PROPERTIES, then click the Outlook Address Book tab. Check the box that says something like "Make this my default Outlook Address Book." Keep clicking "apply" and "okay" until you've exited out of the dialog box maze.
You may have to do something similar with your Calendar files. I dd not, but if you need to, do it.
Everything should now sync pretty seamlessly.
I didn't have the exact same problem as you, but my dilemma was close enough. Good luck!

  • How to view "From" header field in OUTgoing messages in Mail? Frustrating.

In Mail v.4.3 (in OSX 10.6.4), I need to view the "From" field in my outgoing messages as I am composing them. However, there seems to be no setting in Mail which allow this.
I find this very frustrating because in Eudora (which I used to use), the "From" field in outgoing messages is visible by default. But in Mail, not only is it not visible by default, there seems to be no way to make it visible.
In the "Customize..." button to the left of the Subject field in outgoing messages, one has the option to add as default outgoing message fields "cc," "bcc," "Reply-To," and "Subject," but none of those are what I want. It allows one to also view the address of the mail server, but that also is not what I'm looking for. What I want is to see my outgoing +email address+. And nowhere is there an option in the Preferences to turn this on. (At least as far as I could tell.)
In fact, the only way to see the identity in the outgoing "From" field is to go to Preferences, then click on Accounts, and look there; or send oneself a test email. Both of which are a hassle and should be unnecessary.
In case you're curious as to why I want to see my outgoing "From" header field:
I have several different "personas" online, each of which uses a different email address: My work address (with a work-related domain); my family/personal address (with a different email address than my work address); an online avatar I use in various gaming sites (also with its own address, since I don't want to use my personal name/address in the gaming community); and so on. However, I have all incoming emails to all accounts auto-forwarded to the same central email account. Most of the time I'm just replying to business emails, so my outgoing "Full Name" and "Email Address" (in Preferences>Accounts) are generally set to my business name and address; but on occasion when I want to reply to a non-business email and not have the recipient see my business email address, I go in to Preferences>Accounts and change "Full Name" and "Email Address" (i.e. what is displayed to the user) to something different. And when I'm done with that, I change it back to my business address.
However, sometimes I forget if I've changed it back or not, or forget what I've changed it to. In Eudora, All one needed to one was create a new outgoing email and it would display the "From" field so I could instantly see my outgoing identity. But in Mail, there is no "From" field in outgoing emails, so I'm constantly nervous and wondering which outgoing identity I may have changed to and accidentally forgotten to change back from.
(Yes, yes, I know that if a recipient wanted to be snoopy, they could look at the "full headers" of any incoming email and see the name of my email server, which may different from my displayed email address; but we're not talking about spy-stuff here, I'm just trying to not confuse people and keep business separate from personal.)
So: is there any way for me to see the outgoing "From" field in the emails I send? Or am I condemned to constantly (and mostly unnecessarily) checking "Preferences>Accounts" to see what I have enetered there?

    Thanks for replying.
What is the "compose window" to which you are both referring? I could find no reference to such a thing in the Mail menus or Help.
Do you mean the "Composing" pane in the Preferences? I don't see what either one of you is referring to there, but I did notice there something that could function as an awkward workaround: If I click on the "Automatically CC myself" box in Preferences>Composing, then when I start a new email, my email address is displayed in the "CC" field -- and luckily, Mail allows me to then delete my email address out of the CC field, so I don't have to spam myself with duplicate copies of all my emails. This way, I can at least briefly see what email address I'm using, before I delete it from the CC field. Pretty awkward and unnecessarily laborious, however -- still not a perfect solution.
Or, by "composing window," are you referring to an outgoing email? As I said in my original comment, I do see what Ernie called "a small box with lines and an arrow at the bottom left of the header box." This is what I had to say about it:
+"In the "Customize..." button to the left of the Subject field in outgoing messages, one has the option to add as default outgoing message fields "cc," "bcc," "Reply-To," and "Subject," but none of those are what I want. It allows one to also view the address of the mail server, but that also is not what I'm looking for. What I want is to see my outgoing email address. And nowhere is there an option in the Preferences to turn this on. (At least as far as I could tell.)"+
In other words, when Ernie says, "click the box beside From," I can't do that -- because there is no such option. That's the whole problem in the first place. If there was a "From" field beside which I could click a box to make it appear, I would have done so! But there is no "From" field in the "Customize" section of the "small box with lines and an arrow at the bottom left of the header box."
I find it completely mystifying that both of you seem to be able to see a "From" field available to be added to the header of outgoing emails, yet no such option is available to me in Mail. What possibly could be causing this? 10.6.4 is freshly installed on my machine, and Mail seems brand new and uncorrupted. And I'm using Mail 4.3, the latest version.
Are you saying that everyone else can see an option to have a "From" field in their outgoing messages, but I uniquely don't? Very very very strange.

That sounds like a compatibility issue with an add-on that you have installed, as reported by a number of users in both Firefox 22 and Firefox 23 over the last couple of months. If you would provide a listing of your installed extensions ''(as you were prompted to do when creating this thread)'' maybe one of us can advise you which extension is the mot likely culprit. You will need to re-install Firefox 23 to do further diagnostic testing.
As far as the compatibility of Firefox 23 and Win XP SP3, Mozilla has verified they are compatible and not one user ''(including me on two separate PC's)'' has reported a problem with compatibility.

    Hello Joannah,
Thank you for details of the issue you are experiencing with duplicates in Contacts after upgrading to OS X Mavericks.  I would be frustrated by this too.
If you have enabled iCloud Contacts, I recommend following the steps in the article below:

  • HT4910 Feeling a bit frustrated that my contacts, mail, notes & calendar do not appear to be either backing up at all or only partially to iCloud when that was the purpose for using it to begin with. Anyone have suggestions or instructions how to get this

Feeling a bit frustrated with iCloud as it has either not backed up my contacts, mail, notes, & calendar on my phone or only partially. How helpful is that?? It has already resulted in "losing" data for me in my calendar & contacts since I've owned it at the beginning of this year. Would really appreciate any instructions or suggestions others have used successfully to "fix" this problem. Thanks so much in advance for your time & information!

Apple used to strive for smarter solutions but that has changed.
After "upgrading" to Mavericks you can no longer sync device to device with USB or WiFi.
This is so stupid! First, when you travel there are long periods of no WiFi or 3G/4G. Second, cloud-based services are still pretty worthless because it's slow. Third, cloud-based services are still pretty worthless because of low security. Fourth, cloud-based services are still pretty worthless because of low capacity (I have a calendar from my first Newton of 1996 and iCloud can't handle the amount of data).
Why would you prohibit safe and fast syncing via USB??? It's just plain stupid!
Do NOT upgrade to Mavericks if you want to keep your safe and fast sync for Calendars and Contacts.

  • Not receiving mac mail again. frustrated!

This is the second time this month that I stop receiving any mail. At least 6th time this year.
Each time there has been a service advisory on the .mac page indicating that a small % of subscribers are having intermittent mail service butthat the problem has now been resolved.
I seem to get the no-mail problem 1-2 days after the reported "resolution".
oh - I did get 2 emails today. Both spam!
    What's the deal?

Not sure if this helps you, but it helped me: I have an Earthlink account that does a similar thing, it just stops receiving new mail in my Mail app. I've discovered if I check my mail on the Earthlink website and delete the next message I'm supposed to have received (after reading it, of course), then go back to my Mail app and click on Get Mail, all of the other emails I haven't yet received come into my mail box.
I've had this problem many times on my computer and so have several others at my work place and this fix worked for them as well. Which is interesting, considering our work email service is Verizon and not Earthlink.
Best of luck, I know how frustrating this is.
