MAIL & gMAIL - auto save drafts

MAIL 2.13 & gMAIL - seems to auto save drafts without me doing anything - is there a way to turn this off so it is only manual?

My suggestion is that you turn off the "Store draft messages on the server" in the Account info settings, under *Mail Behaviors.* (Go to Mail Preferences ==> Accounts; or click on the Associated Mailbox and then Right Click to get Account Info. Either approach will get you to the property pages where you will see the Behaviors tab)
I noticed this with Gmail (using IMAP) and it appears that by default, Apple Mail will save a draft EVERY 30 seconds. I had a Blackberry that was also set up as an IMAP device and although I only SENT one message, it was causing multiple messages to be sent to my Blackberry. I would have a new message every 30 seconds while I was typing my new message or even on a reply.
There were also multiple messages in the Trash from the same message as it was being composed.
Whether this was caused by settings on the Blackberry, I never really pursued, but unchecking the "Store draft messages on the server" solved my problem.

  • Composing: turn auto save drafts off?

the title says it all: is it possible to turn auto save of Drafts off during composing? I often end up with multiple copies that have to be deleted manually later, and most of the time, I don't even need Drafts to be saved.
I just want a draft to be made/saved whenever I hit the button. NOT every 20 seconds.

I have the same problem, did you find a solution?

  • Why not both trash and archive for gmail? & Save draft?

    1. For gmail that I'm through with, I understand I can go to settings and choose to have it either trashed (moved to trash file) or archived (moved to all mail file). But, why an either/or choice? Why can't there be both icons for trash and archive? They are pretty different functions, each useful.
If Mail is incapable of this, is there another email app that can do it?
    2. How do you save a draft of an email?

Setting it to archive is a one time step that is applied to the account.
    Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calenders>
Sellect the gmail account you want then  slide "On" the Archive Messages feature on this page.
From the inbox you do have the the 2 options you're after and both take 2 clicks. One is the archive icon (an arrow pointing into a box. This send mail to the All Mail folder and the 2nd is an arrow label on a folder. The second option is the move function and with 2 click a message is trashed from your inbox.

  • Minor bug: pop-up menu under "Auto-save drafts"

Here's a fun bug for your web developers to fix:
If you go to your own profile page on the discussion forums, you will see a list of autosaved draft messages.  This list of messages is right-justified in your web browser.  So it always appears on the far right.  So when you click on an item in the list, the pop-up menu goes off screen.  You can't easily click on anything in the submenu without some clever scrolling in your browser.  Kind of annoying.
This is happening on my IE 8 on Win7 x64.

I have seen the same behavior:

  • Gmail saves Draft messages in Trash

It seems that I when I set up my gmail account in Mail gmail wants to move old copies of a draft message to the trash as opposed to deleting it permanently or just over writing it. Is there any solution to this?

It seems that if I set Mail to not save draft messages on the server my gmail draft box appears again in my mailbox sidebar, whereas it was not visible before. Selecting this mailbox (the draft box in gmail) to be used to store draft messages allows messages to be saved on the server without them being moved to the trash every time a copy of a draft is overwritten.
    You just have to
    1. Deselect "Store Draft Messages on The Server" in options
    2. Select "Drafts" under "Use This Mailbox For:" in mailboxes, when the draft folder reappears under gmail.
It seems that other people had posted on this problem in the forum without actually receiving a solution...

  • Any file opened/downloaded from Gmail auto saved to My Documents?

Upon further review of the My Documents section of my MBP's HD, it appears like thousands of items--from JPGs/Clip Art logos from docs/videos etc--were auto saved if I ever opened the doc or a doc with the clip art as part of the doc in my Gmail.  What's bizarre is that many of these docs were downloaded from or opened in Gmail when I used my old MacBook; I've never opened them since I bought the MBP.
Does Gmail auto save this stuff to your HD?  If so, why?  These docs are not in my regular My Documents folder that I set up when I got the MBP, but an All Documents folder that appears to have collected everything.  Please help me understand what is going on--thanks!

    1. Yes.
    2. Because it displays search results from a large part of the storage available to the computer.
    3. If you really want to, quit Safari and delete the Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari folder of the item in the Finder's sidebar with the house icon.

  • Mail:  draft auto-save frequency

My MBP has a crashing problem that I need to fix when I have $750 to spare.  Crashes are random and infrequent, so mostly I can live with it, as long as auto-save works for most things.
I just had a crash.  One long email draft from two days ago was saved in its entirety.  Another draft composed on the same day was mostly lost, only the first sentence survived.
The research I've done suggests that draft auto-save frequency is non-adjustable and happens every 30 seconds.
I know the best thing is to get my MBP fixed, but in the meantime are there any things I can do to make sure that auto-save of drafts (and in other programs as well) works properly?
    THANKS!

You can always do a File > Save from Mail's menu (or Command - S) when you think you've reached a critical point worth doing a save.

  • Can't get Mail- Gmail- Drafts(And Sent Items) to mirror online or my iphone

I have read the posts here and elsewhere on how to get this to work, but for some reason my 'Drafts'(and 'Sent' items) folder in Mail.app is still not the same as online or on my iphone. What exactly do i need to do to make Mail.app folders for Drafts/Sent items stay in synch with my iPhone and web based Gmail?
Here are my settings in Mail.app
    -Gmail is Setup as IMAP
-in Mail->Prefs->Accounts->Mailbox Behaviours All boxes are checked for Server except 'Junk'
When looking at a normal 'Inbox' panel, if I mouse over the 'Gmail' account in 'Drafts' it says "Contents Stored on Server. Name on Server: Drafts"
However when viewing Mail.app->Drafts->Gmail, no draft messages are shown. If I do the same on my iPhone or the web based gmail I do see the up-to-date drafts. Also if i select the 'Drafts->Gmail folder), I do not get any options in (Mail->Mailbox->Use This Mailbox for).
That said, if I find the IMAP Structure in Mail(scrolling down accounts) I do see a folder structure called 'Gmail->[Google Mail]' that does contain the Drafts and Sent folders that are in synch.

  • What can I do to fix Mail software, which does not allow me to move messages around, save "drafts", receive or send messages?

My "Mail" software looks to have become corrupted, as I can't move messages around, save "drafts", receive or send messages.  The problem occurred after my Mac crashed and was re-started. Any ideas on what can I do to fix this? Any good suggestions appreciated!

The Mail program is probably not what is corrupted. That would be extremely difficult because it is not written back to disk. The problem is likely in your user data.
You could check that by logging into a different account (make one if you don't) and set up Mail in that account. If it works fine in that account then you have a problem in your user data.
To reinstall Mail, you'll have to get out your Snow Leopard install DVD and check if it is part of the Optional Installs. If it is not, you could use a program called Pacifist to extract the Mail installer. You'd then have to install the 10.6.7 combo Update to bring Mail up to current version.
What are the permissions on your Mail folder? Post output of this command you run in Terminal (just copy and paste):
    ls -ale ~/Library/Mail
ls is List. -a tells it to show hidden files/folder. l tells it to make a list with details. e tells it to list Access Control List entries.

While composing email, keep getting "Unable to save as a draft" every 30 seconds. I've disable auto save and it didn't help. How can I stop this message?

    Mike,
Thank you for taking the time to look at my app. This is my last major stumbling block that I have to resolve for this and other forms in the app.
Actually, I did use the Form Wizard for Auto DML to originally create the form. It was great. It created most of the Buttons, Items and Validations automatically (basically most of the page). I just needed to create some Processes and Computations. Two of which were the Processes to update the 'create_dt' and 'created_by' fields and 'update_dt' and 'updated_by' fields. The Create process updates the fields just fine.
However, my problem seems to be that the Hidden 'create_dt' and 'created_by' fields aren't picking up the values from a record that is being editted. Then when I attempt to save the record those fields are NULL, causing the DB NOT NULL constraint to throw an exception for those fields. In the back of my mind I seem to remember seeing some post stating something to the effect that the information in fields with a Source Type of Database Column is just displayed and does not affect Session State items.
Even with that, I am still wondering just why the 'created_by' Page Item shows the value that is in the DB record being updated, but the 'create_dt" does not (as can be seen in my first posting). It is the 'create_dt' Page Item (:P205_CREATE_DT) not having the DB records 'create_dt' info in it that appears to be the problem.
    Thanks,
    Tom

  • Can't send e-mails, only save drafts - Blackberry 8520

Somehow, I can't send e-mails regulary anymore. The only way to do this is by goinb to my address book, select a contact and click the send e-mail option. However, if I start composing an e-mail without doing this, the only option I get it "save draft", meaning there is no "send" option anymore. I didn't make any changes on my phone settings or anything, this just happened somehow. I would appreciate any help. Thanks in advance for your response.

Have you done these steps exactly as documented above, and in the order above? The order you've laid out is not the same. Plus, I cannot tell, from what you say, what the results of each step were. Did you receive the proper registration message after doing the HRT? Did you receive further messages when you resent the service books? Do you have a full and proper data plan on your BB from your carrier? Are you shifting from a prior carrier? If so, has the prior carrier properly released your BB from their system?

  • Mail won't save info in Subject field in Drafts folder

    Hi,
For some reason, Mail won't save what I type into the Subject field for messages in the Drafts folder.
    Why?
I can save in any other field for any message in the Drafts folder... This has been going on for awhile, both with Mavericks and Yosemite though it worked earlier with Mavericks.
    Cheers,

(Apple hasn't updated the list of OS's yet so it says 10.10 below...)

Sounds like a limit of your ISP, as it's trying to put it back on the mailserver, which may not accept such a large file.

  • Mail Messages Going To Drafts Folder

Almost every mail message I compose - both new messages and replies - are showing up in the Drafts folder.  These seem to be identical to messages after they are sent and appearing in the Sent folder.  I'm not saving them at any time, so why would these messages go to "Drafts"?
    Thanks,
    JD

While indeed unchecking this option stops the behavior, it's not the best of solutions.  The options to save drafts on server is available with any decent IMAP program, and generally is very beneficial.  Say I start a message on my Mac, and then have to leave before it's done.  If it's saved to the server, I can then pick this message up later on my iPhone or iPad and complete it and send it.  Or I can start it on an iOS device, have it save to the server from there, and then pick it up on my Mac later to complete.
So, the functionality of "Save drafts on server" is widely known amongst IMAP clients, and it would be nice if Apple Mail would simply replace a previous draft of a particular message with the latest version rather than piling up multiple versions of the email.  Also, it's customary that when you eventually send the message, the drafts also disappear.
It would also help if there was a way to increase the auto-save time to a longer setting so that they don't pile up so fast.

  • Outlook 2013 won't auto-save emails if encryption or digital signature is enabled.

In Outlook 2013, I recently noticed that although I have Autosave enabled, I never get drafts autosaved. The option is located in File > Options > Mail > "Save Messages" section > "[ ] Automatically save items that have not been
sent after this many minutes [3]."
Experimenting with why I have lost 2 long emails after system crashes, I discovered that Outlook 2013 will
only automatically save emails if the Encrypt and Sign buttons are turned off. By default, I enable both in our corporate environment. So I never benefit from auto-save. I've changed the Autosave location and tested various other settings to
no avail. But Autosave always works fine if there's no digital signature or encryption enabled.
Has anyone else encountered this? Is this a bug?

    Hi,
I just tested on my Outlook 2013 and experienced exactly the same.
This is pretty much by design, actually you may find you are even unable to manually save these emails as drafts if encryption or digital signature is enabled.  I can also confirm some email service providers don't allow saving Encrypted Emails
as drafts either, so this is not a bug but how it works in Outlook.
