Mail & GMail: enemies

For some reason, I can't get these two to cooperate... I have a cox address too, that I set up with gmail. Could that be the issue?
1. I use IMAP
2. Set all proper settings
3. Random files appearing on left side-bar (tabs are :Mailboxes, Reminders, On my Mac, and Gmail)
4. Under Gmail there's 6 folders: [Gmail] (which is white), Deleted Messages, Junk, Junk-email (what's up with two folders of the same thing???), Trash, Trash-for my other cox address).
5. Duplicate messages received by my gmail account
6. can't receive any messages through Mail.
Someone help!

No, I don't need all of the messages all of the time.
Then you have no need for IMAP.
From what I understand, it makes no difference--cox or yahoo
Yes, it does make a difference. I can't use Gmail for my Yahoo! account, or any other account from another provider; same with Cox. You need to use the Cox servers to send and receive your mail for that account. While it's true you can send email through a Gmail server if you have an account there, it shows up as coming from Gmail, not your real email provider. And mail sent to your Cox address can't be received via Gmail unless you were to first forward it to Gmail, which there is no good reason for you to do.
Mail is inconsistent. I can check my web mail--which is more reliable--to get messages on the spot. Whereas, in Mail, it takes a few minutes to actually get a message.
I don't find Mail to be inconsistent at all and I've been doing this for years. I'd say it's more likely a problem with your email provider, Cox; or their mail servers.

Because by your own admission, you don't need to save all your email. In addition, Gmail does not implement IMAP in a way that's easy to manage for users (multiple folders holding the same messages, etc.). If you stick with POP email, it's much easier and intuitive to manage, and the mail you want to keep resides on your Mac, not somewhere else that is always communicating with Mail to keep everything in sync; that process alone grows longer and longer the more email you have.

  • I downloaded the newest version of Firefox and now I can not use any of the clickable link tabs in yahoo mail, gmail, or hotmail. Do you know what is causing this.

Go to msn.com for example: at the top of their page they have clickable link to hotmail. When I upgraded to Firefox 7 this link no longer works. Same thing happens with my yahoo mail, gmail and hotmail. If you open up yahoo mail for example; I can not click on the signout tab.... it doesn't function with firefox 7. I worked prior to uploading new version. I don't have that problem on my windows 7 platform.

That problem can be caused by the Yahoo! Toolbar that extents too much downwards and covers the top part of the browser window and thus makes links in that part of the screen not clickable.

  • How do I get my ALL MAIL gmail folder back in Mac Mail after upgrading to Mavericks?

    Hi
I've upgraded to Mavericks - very cool !........ but my Mac Mail gmail ALL MAIL folder seems to have vanished in my Mac Mail listings.
Any advice how to get it back?
    N)

It seems its all in the new ARCHIVE folder which shows up now.......but dont delete mails in the inbox as that really deletes them and they go to TRASH.  So you have to manually MOVE TO ARCHIVE to ensure it finds itself in ALL MAIL on the gmail server.  Hope that helps?

  • Can someone explain my POP mail/GMAIL

    Hey,
I have no unread messages in my inbox and a total of 70 emails. When I sync it up with my iPhone, they all come back as new and it says I have 800 unread emails! What's going on? When I sync with Outlook it's fine. I also set it to "Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on" on the GMAIL settings. Does anyone know what's going on?

    It's really quite simple:
Gmail's organizational structure is based on meta tags rather than hard folders like Yahoo! or .Mac mail. That said, Gmail's folders are virtual, with only one real "folder" containing all your mail - new, archived, and even sent - in what looks like a giant Inbox.
That said, when a POP client accesses Gmail's servers, it downloads everything in that big folder. The biggest flaw in Gmail's POP interface is that Sent messages get downloaded into the client's inbox. Using most POP clients, you can specify a rule that any incoming mail from "Your Name" gets moved to the Sent folder and marked as read. Unfortunately, the iPhone doesn't support rules yet.
The settings that work for me on the iPhone are as follows:
Settings -> Mail -> Show: 25 Recent Messages
Settings -> Mail -> Gmail -> Advanced -> Use Recent Mode
Settings -> Mail -> Gmail -> Advanced -> Delete From Server: Never
If you want to use hard folders, Y! IMAP or .Mac IMAP may be the way to go. You can have Gmail forward to those accounts, and set rules in those accounts to direct which folders the incoming mail goes to.
    Hope that helps!

  • Cannot log in to yahoo mail, gmail, facebook, discussion forums

Over the past week I've had trouble logging into yahoo mail, gmail, facebook and certain discussion forums.
I can't even get to the yahoo mail or gmail log in page.
I type my log in info on the facebook page and press enter and nothing happens.
I've tried everything to solve this problem: I've deleted cookies.sqlite and cookies.sqlite-journal; deleted all my cookies; typed the appropriate website addresses in the exceptions window; removed my add-ons and themes; and even re-installed Firefox.
    Nothing has worked.

    I've done all those things.
I forgot to add, that I even started Firefox in safe mode and I still have the problem.

  • I am trying to attach photos in an e-mail (Gmail), however I can't access yesterday's or todays photos which were downloaded from the iphone to iphoto, and added to a new album. I can access all photos from all days previous to yesterday. Why? I

I am not able to access today's or yesterday's photos in the Attachment box when trying to e-mail photos using Gmail. I am using a new Mac Book Pro, photos from my iPhone, and download to iPhoto. All photos previous to yesterday are accessible. This is a recurring issue. Any help here?

The photos is question don't show up in the Last Import smart album?
In the Event mode set View ➙ Sort Events ➙ By Date ➙ Descending.  That way the newest Events will be at the top of the window.  Do you see the photos in the last couple of events?
If no to all of the above try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window. Be sure to follow the circled recommendation in the screenshot.
    2 - run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

  • BUG: Mail (GMAIL IMAP) no longer connects over ethernet, only wireless

I too was puzzled last night when I couldn't get my gmail account to go online. I did a lot of reading, and tried various things (to no avail), but ultimately decided it was just a configuration error, or combination of other programs running...or maybe even (as read in other posts) Google's servers. I found the server problem unlikely though, since I could also log in via the web interface.
Mysteriously, opening Mail on a separate MBP over either ethernet or wireless was 100% normal...as was the imap connection on my iPad via 3G or wireless...so what was causing my brand new MBAir to choke? Sleep on it, I said to myself.
Well here I am on day 2 of Mail refusing to connect. Connection doctor always shows 'green' next to connection status (Mail was able to connect to the internet), but red for both imap and smtp servers, with messages reading "Mail could not connect to this IMAP/SMTP server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in Account preferences. Also verify the server supports SSL. If it does not, deselect the 'Use SSL' checkbox in the Advanced tab of Account preferences."
I've eliminated the server issue, because my MBP still opened Mail just fine while connected to my network here at home.
Then, just for fun, I decided to unplug my ethernet (which is attached via Apple's own USB Ethernet adapter), and turn on my wireless. Almost instantly, Mail popped to life on my MBAir, and started syncing with gmail/IMAP.
In the two months I have owned this MBAir, getting Mail to work over ethernet had never been a problem. My issues seemed to parallel the recent influx of problems reported with gmail & IMAP.
I still cannot get Mail to access gmail over the USB Ethernet Adapter. What gives, Apple? Anyone else experiencing these symptoms on these new MBAirs?
    Model Name: MacBook Air
    Boot ROM Version: MBA31.0061.B01
    SMC Version (system): 1.66f54

Turns out I was a victim of my own [tight] security. I had a SOCKS proxy enabled on my Ethernet for when I take this laptop on the road...I used it to connect securely to my server back home. Obviously at home my SOCKS proxy was not connecting from within my private network. As soon as I removed the SOCKS proxy, voilá! GMAIL IMAP works perfectly over the USB Ethernet adapter once again.
I hope this serves as a reminder to thoroughly check your network settings before driving yourself mad!
    Cheers!

  • Can't get Mail- Gmail- Drafts(And Sent Items) to mirror online or my iphone

I have read the posts here and elsewhere on how to get this to work, but for some reason my 'Drafts'(and 'Sent' items) folder in Mail.app is still not the same as online or on my iphone. What exactly do i need to do to make Mail.app folders for Drafts/Sent items stay in synch with my iPhone and web based Gmail?
Here are my settings in Mail.app
    -Gmail is Setup as IMAP
-in Mail->Prefs->Accounts->Mailbox Behaviours All boxes are checked for Server except 'Junk'
When looking at a normal 'Inbox' panel, if I mouse over the 'Gmail' account in 'Drafts' it says "Contents Stored on Server. Name on Server: Drafts"
However when viewing Mail.app->Drafts->Gmail, no draft messages are shown. If I do the same on my iPhone or the web based gmail I do see the up-to-date drafts. Also if i select the 'Drafts->Gmail folder), I do not get any options in (Mail->Mailbox->Use This Mailbox for).
That said, if I find the IMAP Structure in Mail(scrolling down accounts) I do see a folder structure called 'Gmail->[Google Mail]' that does contain the Drafts and Sent folders that are in synch.

  • My menu for "file" "tools" ,etc. has disappeared and I don't know how to get it back and keep it there at the top. Also, my e-mail (gmail) has disappeared and when I try to get a new gmail account, it doesn't "take". What to do????

I thought that my account had been hacked and that might be the reason I could not get my 2 different e-mails. Also, at the same time this happened, I could not get into Internet Explorer. I could still get into and use Open Office during the above problems

Thank you for the info re. the main menu. Your answer I used worked; however, the menu bar all the way across is solid black. The only way I can find out the names on the menu is to point the cursor from left to right over the black bar to find "file" "edit" tools", etc. What do I need to do to get these menu titles to be seen?
As regarding the GMail --the menu bar used to have an envelope symbol which was white and outlined in red. That disappeared. I googled "mail.google.com" to try to get back my email. This didn't work. I then tried to get a different email address and password--after 8-19 attempts, this never worked. My other email (sbcglobal.net) has never returned. So I don't know where that went or how to get it back

  • Mail/Gmail/PDF attachments not shown in mail.

I currently use apple mail to access my gmail emails however every so often I notice that some of the emails that mail picks up from gmail do not contain attachments (.pdf) that are visible when I log into gmail. Any suggestions as to how I can make them appear in mail? It is often very irritating.
    Mail version 3.5.

    Hi,
    Similar problem here with me.
    Also this thread - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1997630
Hopefully we can find a solution.
I've rebuilt mailboxes and re-added accounts to no avail.
Attachments are working fine in the web interface but when syched with IMAP to Mail - no worky.
    I get a winmail.dat file instead.
    Cheers

  • Mail/ Gmail question

I already have my personal email configured in mail (POP account). I have just set up, for business, a gmail account, which I want to be able to send and receive from Mail alongside my personal account. i.e: I want to be able to have both accounts set up which I can switch between, rather than having to log onto Gmail via Safari.
When I try and follow the Gmail/ OSX advice, mail tells me I already have a POP account configured and won't allow me to add another.
    Any way around this?
Also, is it possible to have a separate inbox/ folder for the gmail emails to go directly to?
    Thanks in advance

It looks like you’re trying to set up a mail account with the same Account Type, User Name and Incoming Mail Server as an already existing one, which doesn’t make sense in the circumstances you’ve described. Could you please clarify this?
You should certainly be able to set up as many mail accounts in Mail as you wish, and each would have its own separate mailboxes, as long as the Account Type, User Name and Incoming Mail Server are not the same...

  • Mail + Gmail deselects messages in list

My company recently switched to Google Apps (Gmail) for our mail. I've got my IMAP account setup in Mail, but have an incredibly frustrating problem. As I'm deleting messages in the inbox, the message pane will deselect the current message, apparently as it deletes/resyncs with the server. If I have 4 unread messages, and rapidly delete the first 3, the 4th will be selected for a brief moment, and then no message will be selected. Meaning I have to click on the 4th message to read and/or delete it. Sometimes it's deselected multiple times after clicking on it, meaning I have to click on the message repeatedly to even read it. Once the Activity window shows activity has ceased, the problem stops. Sometimes it will even scroll the window to the top of my Inbox, so I will have to scroll down and click on the message that should already be selected.
I've done quite a bit of searching on Google and in these forums and haven't found a similar problem. This is surprising, since 3 out of 3 Mail users in my office have the exact same problem. I never had this problem before switching to Gmail (our previous mail server was Qmail).
Help please! This basically makes Mail unusable for me since I get hundreds of emails per day. I loathe to switch to Thunderbird, but I may have to if I can't figure this out (does Thunderbird have decent threading yet?)
    Thanks!

    Fixed!
    Solution:
    * Enable "Advanced IMAP controls" in Google Labs
    * Change these settings in IMAP/POP section:
    * Auto-expunge: Do not automatically expunge messages
    * When a message is expunged from the last visible IMAP folder: Move the message to the Trash
    * For Mail.app settings, follow instructions here: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78892#

  • Mail/gmail sent messages

I've been using Mail and Gmail for about 6 months with no problems. 4 days ago, however, Mail stopped saving sent messages. The message headers are in the sent box, but when I click on them I get the message "The message from Chris Watson <[email protected]> concerning “well Hello” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it." The account is online, and the messages were sent from my computer and not the webmail version of Gmail. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Report the names of the files and folders present at the first level of the ~/Library/Mail/ folder in the Finder.
In order to post the exact file names and avoid typing mistakes, proceed as follows. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. With that folder open, if you’re looking at it in View > as List mode, first collapse any expanded folders so that the Finder only shows the files and folders at the first level of ~/Library/Mail/. Now, do Edit > Select All (⌘A), then Edit > Copy (⌘C), and paste it in your reply to this post.
Before actually posting that information, edit it so that the file/folder names do not reveal any details you should keep private, e.g. replace any real username with “username” to hide your real email address. Try to be consistent in how you disguise those details, though, as we may need to refer to them in subsequent posts.
Report also the names of the files and folders present at the first level of the ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/ account folder.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • Outbound Apple Mail Gmail Messages Trapped in Outbox

    Mavens,
On an iMac running Mavericks (OS X 10.9 (13A603)) and Apple Mail 7.0 (1822), outbound GMail messages remain trapped in the Outbox.
NOTE: This GMail account is using Google's 2-step Verification with an Application-specific Password for Apple Mail.
Apple Mail does access GMail's Inbox (it seems that all Gmail Inbox messages are reflected in Apple Mail's Inbox).
Outbound Gmail Emails remain trapped in Apple Mail's Outbox.
    ALSO—
If Apple Mail is closed, then re-opened, it (Apple Mail) asks for the GMail password...over & over & over...the only solution I've found is to create a new Google Application-specific password. Very tedious, and quite un-Apple-like ("...it just works.").
If you've encountered—and fixed—either of these problems...what do you suggest? Any ideas?
    Many, many thanks in advance.
    Best,
    Plane Wryter

    May have found a fix!
Thrashing around in Mail | Preferences | Accounts...
I painstakingly worked through all the settings for the GMail account (e.g., double-checking IMAP and SMTP parameters).
In doing so, I notices that the setting for "TLS Certificate" was "None" (as it is for my other GMail accounts).
    On a whim, I clicked the drop-down for TLS Certificate...and selected com.apple.idms.etc.etc.
    Allons-y! It worked.
A moment after selecting the TLS Certficate setting...the [formerly] trapped Outbox Emails launched on their way.
If you have the same symptoms, I hope this helps.
