Mail goes offline when computer sleeps.... can I prevent this

I searched and couldn't seem to find an answer for this. When my wife checks her mail in the morning after the computer sleepsshe gets the triangle with the exclamation point.
She will click go online and then she can check the mail.
It seems like when the computer sleeps it loses the internet connection and mail does not realize it has recconected when the computer is waked.
Doesn't do it with mine when but I use wireless.
Not sure if it is a router issue or not, and if so any idea how to fin it.

Try this. Upon waking the computer from sleep. Wait about 20 seconds before doing any network activity like Mail or Safari. Then try it.
When a computer goes to sleep, to the rest of the world, it is the same as being turned off. It's Internet connection is disconnected. It takes a few seconds to re-establish the connection.

I am helping a friend get his Mail working smoothly.
He accesses the internet with a dongle. Safari works okay. However, when clicking Send in Mail, Mail goes into offline mode and shows a "~" icon.
Anyone know how to get outgoing mail working. Incoming seems to be working most of the time.

6500 A printer goes offline when computer updates

I am really coming to the end of my rope with this printer. I used an HP computer running Windows ME, allegedly the worst operating system ever, for 10 YEARS with absolutely ZERO issues until my printer broke and nobody made a printer that would work with ME anymore. So I bought a new computer running Windows 7 64 bit and have had absolutely nothing but problems. It seems that every time the computer updates with the printer on, it throws the printer off line. REALLY OFFLINE. One time, the printer had to be uninstalled and reinstalled. A huge PITA. This time, it changed the printer address to some MAC address. I have this printer on a wireless network. I have been careful to ensure that the printer is off before I shut down the computer, since this is when it updates, but Sat evening, I forgot and shut the computer down with the printer on. Now it won't scan or print and I get an error message stating that the computer can't communicate with the printer. I have been afraid to add software or do anything but go on the Internet with this system, as I never know when something will change and kill the stupid printer. I want to put software on this computer to put my vinyl onto CD, but am having so much trouble, i don't need anymore. To make matters worse, I am not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to computers, so this causes me more trouble than it might others. What should I do? Thanks.........GREG

I just spent FOUR hours with HP technical people trying to get my printer to work again. They tell me that it was originally a problem with my IP server messing up my printer address. The printer address had been changed to a MAC address, which is some kind of a security address, origin unknown. They performed their usual hocus-pocus and got the thing working again. I chewed on a supervisor for a while and he promised a follow up call tomorrow. All well and good, but the thing will work for a day, a week, or a month and then take a dump again. VERY frustrating. The thing should be able to be fixed, permanently, and work for ten years like my old one did without drama. Good luck on your problem. I have no help to offer, but HP tech people have been good to me. If you are out of warranty, God be with you!!.........GREG

Sent emails in Mac Mail going straight into Outbox - how can I fix this?

For several days now my emails sent from Apple Mail, which is certainly ( when working ) the best email service I've used, has failed to send emails and instead lodges them in my Outbox, where they remain, and the Mail Activity slot at the bottom datailing the progress of outgoing messages
tends to come to a halt halfway along the progress bar.
Very frustrating.

Launch the Connection Doctor (Mail.app Window > Connection Doctor) and (if you see any red-dot warnings from the first pass of the tool, and you probably will) open the details drawer and re-run the connection tests. If you can't figure out the error from what details are generated by the tool, post the expurgated data — edit out any sensitive data — and post it here.
Also (though this probably won't help) repair your mailbox. Mail.app Mailbox > Repair.
See if you can access the target mail via the web app, and see if there are any issues with that server; if things are working "normally" via the web interface. (Details of the web interface vary.)
Also confirm the outbound mail message doesn't exceed some limit on the mail server, such as the total storage quota for the target mail server, or the size of the message being sent; something that might cause the message to be rejected by the mail server.
In the above, I'm going to assume you are not running OS X Server here, and are just running 10.6 client. If you are running OS X Server 10.6, then you'll want to have a look at the mail server log files at a start. OS X Server has its own mail server, and debugging that is somewhat more complex than debugging the Mail.app mail client in OS X software, and some other mail server.

Every once in a while my android phone (Galaxy S-4 completely rearranges the order of my Firefox bookmarks which are synced to my computer. Can I prevent this?

The phone and/or Firefox seem to be moving recently used bookmarks to the top of my bookmarks menu, which I don't want to happen. The bookmarks menu on my computer remains unchanged. I have been able to restore the original order on the phone by managing my Sync account, but this seems to take at least a day, sometimes longer, to take effect.

Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.
If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it.
Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select Change Settings for Keychain "login". In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.
From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences ▹ First Aid
If the box marked Keep login keychain unlocked is not checked, check it.

He has invoices in folders for both, and wants to set up the Mac like this:
When he writes from one email address and attaches documents - he want the Mac always to go to the corresponding folder for that company of his. Same for the other email address...
Make sense?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

It's not the printer it's the computer... Need to turn off the USB power off option.

I read someone said you can tap on "other" when selecting which wifi you connect to and then entering the exact wifi name of the network you wish to join and the password and then joining that network allowed the password to be saved. Also with iOS 6 the minimum length of the password needs to be 8 characters. Maybe you password on your router is less than 8 characters long

George, Your trouble sounds just like mine. You can read my thread here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4204561?start=0&tstart=0, but in summary:
Itunes and the Apple TV exchange messages about once per minute. If any wifi interference stops the message-and-reply, iTunes closes the home sharing connection. Other services are usually fine.
I solved my problems by wiring the ATV and computer. (Wiring either alone didn't work.) Home Sharing is now rock solid and works exactly as advertised. No drop-outs during play. The iTunes library is always available on ATV - I never have to restart home sharing or iTunes or the ATV. If a computer or ATV restarts, they pair up automatically.
Not everyone can wire, I know. But it worked for me. Test it if you can.

If your network connectivity is intermittent, Mail will go off line if it can't check mail at the appointed time. "Get mail" with good network connectivity eliminates this.

Mail going offline repeatedly

Hi. My mail application has suddenly started going offline repeatedly. I have a wireless DSL account and even when I have a signal and am online (according to system preferences/network/airport), mail tells me I'm offline. I "go online," it checks mail for a second or two, and then tells me I'm offline again. Usually takes about 15 times of going "back online" before I finally get mail. Any thoughts???

I have the same problem and I have not found a solution yet, even though there are postings on this subject dating back to 2005. The problem seems to be some misconfiguration in mail.app b/c when I use a web mail service I have no trouble connecting to the server and downloading mail.
The very annoying thing about mail.app is that when the server refuses connection the email account goes automatically offline. If you don't reset it manually, it will never try to download your email again!!! That bugs me enough that I am considering switching to some other email client.
The time interval for checking mail does not matter. I have it set at 15 min but when I had set to 30 min I had the same problem (and did not get mail for hours).
I did change the settings in System Preferences > Network > Network Port Configurations but that did not seem to make a difference.
Incidentally, the Alert message I get when mail goes offline is:
The server error encountered was: The connection to the server "email.xxx.zzz" on port 0 timed out
This "port 0" puzzles me b/c I am using SSL which supposedly connects to port 995 (according the mail>preferences>account>advanced...)

PPPoE Still Disconnects When Computer Sleeps

With 10.9.2 and again with 10.9.3, PPPoE disconnects when computer sleeps. This didn't happen with OS 8.x, OS 9.x, OS X 10.2, 10.8.x, 10.9.0, or 10.9.1. System Preferences>Energy Saver is set for display and computer to sleep after about 12 minutes. I'd rather not set computer to never sleep. Please advise and correct for 10.9.4. Thank you.

I have the same issue. Also after wake-up connecting to PPPoE is a challenge, because it establishes only after 5-7 attemps (Authentication failed). I guess 10.9.3 update causes this.
