Mail going slow and churning

I have six mail accounts. i have mail going back at least five years on the mac so I appreciate I have a lot there. Mail is now very difficult to use when switching from one mailbox to another for example, it is very slow with lots of time spent gazing at the spinning beach ball. I have switched checking mail to every 5 mins instead of every 1 minute and that helped a little. But once it starts to perform all the rule actions and rebuilding of virtual folders the app is unavailable. Any suggestions on how to speed life up?
cheers.

OK. Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, and making sure that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your mail is stored.
3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
4. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index -- Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • Why is mail so slow and uses all of system resources?

I want to use Mail on my Macbook Air 2010.  I use it on my iPhone with no problems at all.  I have several gmail accounts and me.com accounts.  I have tried even just using only my main account in Mail.  I am now using a system resource monitor and can see that Mail takes up 100% of resources while appearing to do nothing.  When I click on Sent or Drafts, it often shows nothing when I know that there should be stuff there.  I have tried "rebuild" which did not seem to do anything.  Also, it takes forever to quit.
I cannot understand why this program does not work for me.  I have not done anything out the ordinary that I am aware of.  Does it not work well with gmail accounts?  If so, why does the iPhone version handle gmail so well?
I will try that, just using my iCloud account only.  I just want to make sure that when I mail a link from safari or a photo from iPhoto, that it actually goes out and goes in a reasonable amount of time.
Mail for me is a system resource hog.  I am afraid to open it.

I stopped all processes and deleted all accounts and started over with the gmail account.  This time, I chose the option to not store anything locally.  It warned me that I would not be able to read email offline.  When I clicked "save" from preferences, it froze for about an hour with CPU maxed out.  I am going to force quit mail, delete the account again and just go with my fresh iCloud account.  I can set my gmail account to forward messages and then I can freely delete them from the iCloud account knowing that they are still there in gmail.  I guess this will work ok.  I just won't be able to send out from my gmail account from Mail which will confuse some recipients and then lead to people sending mail to the wrong account.
I wish there was an option in Mail to "act like iOS Mail."  I believe that would solve my problem.

  • OS X Mail is slow and "sticky

Since my upgrade to Yosemite on my 2012 Macbook Pro (Retina), Mail has been very slow and "sticky," by which I mean that keypresses don't show up for several seconds, etc.  Has anyone else had this issue, and if so, what have you done to resolve it?
    Thanks!

Back up all data before proceeding.
    1. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/Bundles
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu.* A folder may open, or you may get an error message that the item can't be found. Either result is normal. If the folder does open and has contents, move the contents to the Desktop. Relaunch Mail and test. If there's no change, put the contents of the folder back and quit Mail again.
    2. Repeat with this line:
    /Library/Mail/Bundles
This time you may be prompted for your administrator login password when you remove the items. Make sure they're removed from the folder and not just copied to the Desktop. If necessary, copy them first and then move the originals to the Trash.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • ICloud Mail is slow and unresponsive

For the past week iCloud mail has been very slow and unresponsive. I've checked the iCloud mail server status and everything is okay according to Apple. If I use mail in iCloud in my browser, it is often very slow and sometimes unresponsive in the middle of my typing. I have to wait 20-30 seconds for it to respond so I can continue typing.
When using iCloud mail on my iPhone, it is very slow. Sometimes it does not load images in email or takes a very long time to do so. Other times it just doesn't update after I read my emails. I can pull down the list to refresh but it doesn't update and says I still have unread messages when I don't. A couple of minutes later it will refresh the unread number.
This has all just started happening for me in the last week. How can I report this to apple? It seems as all I can do is go through support and call them or have them call me. I don't have the time to do this when all I want to do is report that something is down or not working properly so they can look into it.

    Hello Scott,
as Apple states on the Apple System Status site (http://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/): "If you are experiencing an issue not listed here, contact support."
This is the only way I could think of to report an issue.

  • Mail Getting Slower and Slower

    Hello all -
I am running Mail 1.3.11 on my 733MHz G4 with OSX 10.3.9. My internet connection is Verizon's 768/128 DSL.
Mail is getting slower and slower, especially sending. (I have timed some outgoing messages at 2 Mb/sec - nowhere near the theoretical 128 Mb.)
I am not allowing my In Box to accumulate many emails. But my Sent Box is quite large and growing larger, since I've been reluctant to discard many of them.
Is Mail's slowness be due to my growing Sent Box? Is there anything else I should look at or do? (My internet browser - Firefox - does not appear to have the same problem.)
Thanks in advance for any suggestions -
    - OF

    hello,
With Mail closed, you could always test whether your sent mailbox is too large by copying it in Finder.
    ~/Library/Mail/YourEmailaccountName/Sent Messages.mbox
and pasting it to say, the Documents folder, then in Mail you could delete all of your sent messages and see if that makes a difference.
If you wanted the sent.mbox back you would import it from where you copied it to, via Mail > File, Import Mailboxes and select it. I don't know if this is the problem though, but you could at least exclude it as a possiblity.

  • Panning scrolling is going slow and hand tool ain't working when using lasso tool.

    Hello Photoshop users,
A couple weeks ago I bought a new PC with windows 8.1. I installed Photoshop CS 5, and it worked really well.
The only thing that isn't working really well, is the (polygonal) lasso tool. When is use it, the scrolling/panning is very slow and the hand tool is also very slow or isn't working at all. Very annoying.
I already called the Adobe customer service, but they don't support Photoshop CS 5 any more (what is a shame for such a expensive program)
Do more people have this problem? Or does anyone know how I can fix this?
I hope someone can help me.

I just fired up Photoshop CS5 on my Win 8.1 system and the panning is quick and interactive.
Is your new PC a desktop system?  If so, what video card do you have in it?  Have you checked the web site of the maker of that video card to see if they have an updated display driver?
For what it's worth, I have an ATI Radeon HD 7850 and the newest display driver (Catalyst 14.4), and like I said, Photoshop CS5 (though not the version I use much any more) appears to work just fine here.
Another thing you can try is to go into the Performance preferences, click the [Advanced Settings...] button in the GPU Settings section, and try different Modes.  Make sure to fully close and restart Photoshop after making any changes there, so you'll be sure to be testing the new settings.

  • Droid 2, R2D2 -  Going Slow and Freezing whatever I'm doing

So in the last 3-4 days, my phone has been exceedingly slow, through everything.  Halfway through typing a sentence my browser/text messaging freezes and stops.  I can't even home-button out of it.  Hitting home to return brings me to the home page after a few minutes, which is  then frozen.  I wait for it to unfreeze and it loads my text message inbox...but without the ability to type.   This happens for browsing/facebook/texting.  Also, whatever other apps I use, are very very sluggish.  Most apps will load normally for 15-20 seconds, then slow down, then freeze.  Many different apps have come to the "xxxxxx is not responding, send error report?"
I have not downloaded any new apps.
I have not overly used my phone.
    I have scanned for viruses.
Today, I deleted task killer, to see if that was it.
To no avail, the phone is still very sluggish, and after 'confusing' it with running a program, it restarts.  Repetitively.
    Any help would be great!

Mine is doing the same thing. After that mandatory installation, I believe it was the 2.1 update, my phone has gone nuts! It is extremely slow, and everything is freezing. Now I cannot even type out a text message, through Handcent or the stock app, and text are coming through doubled.
I thought maybe I needed to just update Handcent, but that didn't help either. I can pull up the app, click a thread, and begin typing without any problems. As soon as the first word is typed though, it freezes completely, and I can even get back to the home screen for a few minutes. One out of five times or so it will give me the option to force close or wait, but other than that I have to just wait.
I'm tried booting in safe mode, and also deleted task killer, checked for viruses, and haven't downloaded or updated any applications. If anyone finds a solution, please post it here, or email me at {edited for privacy}. After work hours, communication with my boss is though messaging for project details. Go figure my phone would do this when I've got a huge work load, with a short deadline.

  • Music goes slow and gives a shaky sound

Since monday i have a problem with several songs playing in Itunes. They go slow and are shaky from sound. This songs are all ACC. I allready updated DirectX and looked for an update for soundcard (no update). No plugins are installed in Itunesplugins. Also installed the new version of Itunes. Nothing seems to work, even the songs backed up on external drive sounds the way described.
    What can i do more???

OK, that's a shame, I wondered if it would be OK in Vista as my Vista PC does not show high CPU usage on m4p files.
What CPU % do you get in the task manager when you play m4p files?
If you mind about this you probably need to downgrade to the last known good version of iTunes which I think is two versions back.
You can download old versions from FileHippo, but the mods don't like us to give the URL.
You have to uninstall itunes in order to install an old version and you also need to rebuild your lirbary using the method here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451
Or if you can find the correct version in your previous Itunes library folder you can use that. This will be a library file with a date corresponding to your upgrade from the version your are installing. See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1967?viewlocale=en_US
Don't forget to report this as a bug using the feedback option on the iTunes help menu.

  • IMac going slow ... applications going slow and freezing up.

Are there ways to speed it up? I know there's no defrag to do ...
What slows a computer down? Too many programs running? To much memory being used?
    Here are my stats:
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac4,1
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 2 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 2 MB
    Memory: 512 MB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
In additions, I have 233.44 GB and 17.61 GB available.
(I have 70 GB in music and 35 GB in iPhoto).
Are these the reasons my comp is slow and is there anything I can do to speed it up?

I noticed in addition to probably being low on memory you have almost filled up your hard disk. It is common for a system to slow down when there is less than 10% HD available. You should begin storing information on an external HD, things like music, videos and photo's are notorious for eating a lot of HD space.
Not a good idea to take your machine into an Apple store for a memory upgrade due to the expense. Memory is extremely easy to replace even for someone not technical. How you determine what type of memory your computer uses is by clicking on the Apple logo in the upper left corner of your screen and then clicking on "About this Mac." Once you know then you can start shopping. A great place to buy memory is at www.owc.com, they have a tool there that will help you choose between what your machine takes and the upgrade options open to you. OWC's memory is very good as is Crucial, Micron, Kingston however don't buy Kingston's budget ram. You can even call OWC for help and someone will be happy to assist. Cost to upgrade ram now is less than $100, if your machine has the ability to upgrade it to 4 GB then most on this board would recommend doing just that.

  • My Mail goes offline and I cannot send mail out

I have two email accounts I use with my mail. I have my Gmail college account and my Outlook College account. I am using OS X 10.8.2 Mountain Lion.
Here is the Screenshot of what pops up when I try to send the mail:
I have tried looking through the options and taking them both offline and bringing them back. I have even deleted both accounts and created them again. I've checked the numbers from the information on the email pages and I'm just incredibly frusturated because I need to communicate with my schools and professors.

  • Firefox does not load a pdf-page shown by a specific link, but goes slow and finally crasches instead. IE10 does work. Link is fro state official side, smhi.se

I have windows7, just installed and no bugs. As said above, when I try Internet Explorer 10, recently installed, I have no problem looking on this pdf - page.
The page is found by logging in to smhi.se, the swedish wheater service. I have no problem with the majority of information shown there, just one specific page.
It can be found by clicking "Väder", then "Is till havs", then down under click "Istjänsten" and then "Senaste iskarta i färg".
This pdf-document is then loaded very slowly and if I try to navigate on the page it crasches.

First, after clicking the Firefox button in the upper corner, there is not popping up the square on your solution above!
I can not select Applications in that menu-line thus.....because I do not have it!
Instead I get a small square with swedish text. Only thing which resembles me of any action is: Settings (Inställningar), so I chose that and another square shows where strangely enough the same line is about Acrobat is repeated twice. No other settings are repeated twice.....
So I go to the line for Acrobat and change both lines to Acrobat reader
Then I save and go out.
I try again to log into the link I am interested in, but no result, same problem as before.
Has your swedish people done something strange???
    Best regards // Hans Hällström
