Mail gone psycho

Hi
My mail program has gone nuts on me. Occasionally I quit mail and it restarts by itself over and over and over. Often it prevents me from shutting down so I have to force quit it. But for the last three days I have been receiving about 200 spams to both my inbox and junk mail pile. BUT I delete them and they reappear almost instantly, same mail same senders same date. But I cannot receive any new mail after two days ago. Anybody have an idea what is causing this? I deleted the preferences plist but nothing has changed
Thanks
Enio

Hi Enio.
What type of mail account is this (POP, IMAP, .Mac)? If POP, what are your Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove copy from server settings?
You may be able to get rid of those messages in Mail doing Edit > Cut (⌘X) (for best results do it with one message at a time), but you may need to remove them from the server first. Does this account allow web access?
You may find the Account Info window useful to solve this problem -- choose Get Info (⌘I) from the Action menu (gear icon) located below the mailboxes list in the main Mail window.
Occasionally I quit mail and it restarts by itself over and over and over.
You probably have a piece of software such as a Dashboard widget or a system utility, or iCal remainders, or something like that, that requires Mail to be running for whatever it does.

  • HELP! email folders & e-mails gone overnight

I have an O2 e-mail account which I used to access through Safari and and a gmail account which I access through Mail.  I decided (using online instructions from my e-mail provider) to set up Mail so it would also contain my O2 e-mail.  It was all very simple and was working fine with all my O2 e-mail folders visible and working in Mail alongside my gmail account.  And I was sending and receiving e-mails fine too.
Today when I opened Mail all my e-mail and folders from my O2 e-mail are gone!!!  I accessed the O2 account via Safari and they are all missing there too.  I have no Timemachine backup as it only happened overnight.
Where are all my e-mails gone?????

    Hello yellow ducky,
As you know, o2 are in the process of moving their broadband system to SKY and this is why you may not get a reply quite as quickly as usual.   I usually phone o2 and I have to say, have had excellent service from them ... only yesterday, one man spent half an hour resetting my router to enable a second device to be used.
Try the technical department on 0800 230 0202 (you have to go through one of those auto selection processes)  .
I think they have the facility to replace your lost e-mails from their server.   Just ask.

  • Mails gone after update to iOS5....

I have updated to ios5 but now all my mails are gone, they were apparently not synchronized when updating... Someone knows how to restore them? I had mails on my iPad that were not on my Mac... So I'm a bit troubled... ;)

That depends on what made them disappear. The backup in iTunes 10.5 does not include your apps. Instead, the apps (and all other iTunes purchases) are automatically re-installed after the upgrade is completed.
First, be sure you have signed into iTunes on your computer with the correct Apple ID (the one you used to make your iTunes app purchases).
If you go to the App Store on your iPhone, go to the Updates "tab" at the bottom, and then tap on "Purchased," do you see a list of all of your apps?
If you see your apps under "Purchased," it may be easiest to reinstall them all manually by tapping the cloud icon to the right of each app in the list. Otherwise, you can try restoring from backup again, making sure you are logged into the correct iTunes account when doing so. Also follow the instructions on your iPhone carefully after restoring, being sure to read all of the options. Choosing the incorrect one may have caused this problem.
If you do NOT see your apps under "Purchased," go to the Settings app, go to Store, and check that you signed in with the correct Apple ID. It will be shown at the bottom. Touching the Apple ID item on that page will let you Sign Out and Sign In with the correct ID if that is the case.

  • User preferences reverted back to default - mail gone

Preferences seem to have gone back to default. I have only 1 user account on my mac. All bookmarks, mail account details, appearence etc have all reverted. The only thing that I have done today that was out of the ordinary was 'organising my fonts' according to Suitcase website - ie deleting/moving unwanted system fonts from various folders. I'm sure I haven't deleted any significant system folders as all my trashed files are still in bin. Any ideas?

OK you can stand down - problem over! Had a chat with those nice people from Customer Care - turned out I had accidentally moved my User Library folder into somewhere else. Hence the OS created a whole new Libray folder with default preference...Duh!
Best way to find out if you have done this is run a search on one of the files within Library and it will show up in 2 places - just replace the newly created folder with the moved one.

  • Mail gone after renaming a folder

    Hi,
Had an issues this weekend with my mail.
I had the following mail folder structure: Main Mailbox -> Axaris (Mailfolder) -> Company name -> Brunen.
When I renamed the folder Brunen to Brünen all the mail in that folder dissapeared. It was just gone. When I browsed the hdd i was able to find the original folder back that was not renamed there. I could retrieve the mail from there, but it should not have happened. So more or less it's a bug.
    I used the lastest OS X: 10.5.5.
    Best regards.

What you've described makes no sense; renaming a folder to the same name it already had would certainly not cause the problem you describe. Was this folder in the Mail program, or on your hard drive? How many messages do you have in Mail, and what have you done so far, if anything, to resolve this issue?

  • Inbox and Sent Mail GONE

Tech support for my provider had me delete and re-enter my account settings in preferences because I was unable to send or receive mail. It wiped out my inbox and sent mail (smart mailboxes and archive folders are fine) I tried to import the mailboxes in the mail folder in the library, but these were created when I re-entered my information and were empty. AND I was in the process of reformatting the time machine drive so my backup were lost. Duh. I did a global search for "inbox" but nothing is coming up and tech support at comcast was at a loss. Any ideas where these messages could have gone? I verified my HD, as was recommended, and it is fine. Thanks!

My friend and I are having just the same problem on an old iMac running OSX 10.4.11 and Mail 2.1.3. I've located the lost messages on my friend's external HD. They were in the directory Users-->(username)-->Library-->Mail-->POP-(username@ISP address@incoming mail server).
The folders were copied to the iMac's desktop from HD. The problem is that using the Import Mailboxes function under File in the Mail menu produced the following error message, "No valid Mail for Mac OSX files were found".
The folder contains several mailbox folders, (name.mbox), including INBOX.mbox, Sent Messages.mbox, etc. They probably are the old default folders. Within each is a Messages folder. Their contents can be read individually by clicking on each .emlx file BUT how do we import them back into Mail?

  • Own mistake - all mails gone - any help?

    Hi there,
I have just realized what a big mistake I just made. I have trouble sending a particular email. While on the helpline with my ISP we tried all sorts of things and one of them was deleting the account and creating it all over again.
And now of course to my absolute horror all the emails to that account are gone - puff. This is very, very bad because there were some important ones.
Is there any way at all to retrieve those emails??? I guess not but I'm just trying my luck.

Stop using your Mac a.s.a.p. as you may be overwriting essential data. Use a serious data recovery program to bring the files back. Data Rescue II is an example of such a program.
The folder you need to rescue is:
    userhome/library/mail/mailboxes

  • HT6065 Update deletes Gmail mails. 90% of mail gone.

Since this update most of my Gmail emails have disappered. Deleted from folders, only a few mails are left in a few folders.
Mail, is gone from the Mail app, gone from the web interface, and is deleting from the iphone as it refreshes Gmail folders. Please HELP!
I did not make a backup, is it possible to roll back the update?
    Thanks in advance.

Without backup your mail may be gone, and rolling the update back will not be simple.
Backup Now, post back when you have.

  • Why is e-mail gone?

Yesterday, I received a pop-up upon sign on through Firefox, from Qwest, our internet provider, that that had evidence that I had a virus and I should do a virus scan. I did and checked their box provided that I did this. Then the pop up disappeared and now all my e-mail is gone. Does anyone know what could have happened. I don't seem to be able to contact Firefox and I called Qwest and they said they would not have had the power to delete my e-mail. However, I can go through Internet Explorer and sign in to Yahoo and get my e-mail there (I don't like Explorer though and don't want to use it. Does anyone know what has happened to my Yahoo e-mail and how I can get it back through Firefox

    You’re welcome.
Mail 2.x stores messages locally in individual *.emlx files within ~/Library/Mail/. For IMAP or .Mac accounts, if Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Keep copies of messages for offline viewing is set to All messages and their attachments, Mail would keep a local copy of the messages on the server using the same *.emlx format.
If the messages are not on the server, rebuilding the mailbox is a really bad idea, as it would cause the locally cached copies to be deleted as well. It’s strange that they seem to still be somewhere. At this point, the less you use Mail until we find them, the better.
Before trying to locate the *.emlx files that appear to not have been deleted, you may want to try to recover the messages that have been deleted. If the messages are not on the server, and you don’t have a backup, your only option in the case of Mail 2.x is to try to salvage as many deleted *.emlx files as possible with a data recovery tool such as Data Rescue II, TechTool Pro, or FileSalvage (the files to be recovered would be different in the case of Mail 1.x). Of these, the only one I know for sure that can recover deleted *.emlx files is FileSalvage. Stop using your computer right now if you want to try that, as anything you do with the computer may cause the deleted files to be overwritten.
After having tried (or discarded) recovering the deleted *.emlx files, make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder to avoid accidentally losing those that seem to not have been deleted yet. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example.
When done, post the contents of the following folders:
    ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/
    ~/Library/Mail/Mac-username/
    ~/Library/Mail/Mac-username/INBOX.imapmbox/
p.s. Nice to see someone else in Spain.
Yes, but you’re not Spanish, are you?

  • Mailbfr - f   old mails gone, mailbfr - f   old mails gone

i ran mailbfr -f  to reconstruct my mail system, someone told me i can stop it any time i want, and wont harm any, but after i stopped the reconstructing, i found all my users` old emails are gone, just disapeared in one second. i have to continue the command and let the reconstruct finish hope mails could be back. i also checked the hard drive, all mails are there. but i dont know how to get those mails back to the inbox. could anyone help me with this? thanks.

Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup),  it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move this folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.

  • Rebuild mailbox, all mails gone...

One mailbox of mine showed only headers but no message in the body. So i tried to rebuild. Now all (but one) mails the inbox are gone. In the send box the header are there, the body messages not (don't think i will rebuild again..). And yes, i didn't backup lately....
So were can i find the lost messages (or does the system dispose of them immidiately when you hit "rebuild")

Rebuild does not dispose of messages. Did you wait patiently for Rebuild to finish, and wait until message list disappears before reappearing?
However, if the message bodies were already gone, then Rebuild would further remove the list messages.
In the Finder, open Home/Library/Mail -- if the mailbox rebuilt was the Inbox, then open the Account folder (likely a POP Account folder?), and further open the INBOX.mbox folder, and then further open the Messages folder within. How many xxxx.emlx files is the Messages folder reported to contain?
If the mailbox in question was one you created, then in the Mail folder, find and open the Mailboxes folder where that would reside, and make the same examination.

  • I didn't upgrade ICloud storage in time is my mail gone?

I upgraded my ICloud storage today at 230pmET. I was over the limit yesterday when the free trial expired. Is any mail I may have received in the past day gone?

It's possible that you are having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not caused by one (or more than one) of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] (don't forget to select ''Disable all add-ons'' when you start safe mode). If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and themes and [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+plugins this one] for plugins.
If you need support for one of your add-ons, you'll have to contact its author.
If the problem does not disappear when all add-ons are disabled, please tell me, so we can work from there. Please have no fear of following my instructions to the line, as all can be easily undone.

  • Mail gone, wont quit or display anything after update...

    Hi Folks,
In the process of helping my dad upgrade his G4 mini to 10.5.6 from 10.4.something. He's on dialup still so screen sharing to get him going is not really an option and I"m trying to help him with this over the phone and it's slow going. The upgrade DVD ran fine and there were no problems that he noted. The machine is now running 10.5.6 that came on the DVD all OK. It is able to go online and safari works. Mail however has choked.
THe window opens when you run the program, but no mail is displayed when you select inbox or any other mailbox. The right hand pane of emails is blank. He is able to select to write an email and has sent several to me but they were never actually sent, nor do they show in the drafts or send email or any other email box. I have attempted to rebuild the mailboxes from the mailbox menu, and while it allows him to select this it doesn't help, still no messages displayed.
Further, Mail wont quit. When you try to quit it it hangs and it requires that you force quit it before you can restart the machine.
All the account preferences and passwords and addresses appear to still be there, you can go to preferences and see the settings. This is a POP account not an imap account, so there should be local copies of all the messages he has received and kept in his inbox.
I suspect a database issue or something? Is there a way to totally rebuild the database from scratch?
I did try running the vacuum index command from the terminal and that ran without returning any errors, but did not fix the problem.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated thank you!

I found it! Here is the answer from "troubleshooting".
    Resolution
Force quit Mail if necessary: From the Apple menu, choose Force Quit, select Mail in the Force Quit window's list of applications, then click "Force Quit".
If the issue persists after relaunching Mail, follow these steps while Mail is not running:
From the Finder's Go menu choose Go to Folder.
Go to this location (type or paste the tollowing, then click Go):
    ~/Library/Mail
Move the items named "MessageRules.plist" and "MessageRules.plist.backup" to another location, such as your desktop.
Note: If you previously upgraded from Mac OS X 10.3 to Mac OS X 10.5, the files will be named "MessageSorting.plist" and "MessageSorting.plist.backup".
Open Mail. Note: At this point you can either set your Junk Mail settings and re-create your Mail rules manually in Mail preferences, or follow the next two steps (if you re-create rules and Junk settings, do not perform the following steps).
    Quit Mail.
Place the items named "MessageRules.plist" and "MessageRules.plist.backup" back in the ~/Library/Mail folder (replace any copies that were added to ~/Library/Mail when you opened Mail).
