Mail: Group addresses should not expand

Suddenly, Mail chose to expand group addresses, even though the relevant box in Preferences —> Composing is unchecked.
I have ‘checked’ the box, quit Mail, relaunched Mail, composed a test message and send it (of course all the addresses were there). Then unchecked the box, quit Mail, relaunched, and composed another test message. Still, all the addresses were there...
Any suggestions?

For me, hiding the recipients of a group is vital. There is always some i**ot who hits 'reply all,' and kicks lose an avalanche of emails...
Thanks for updating me on that bug, though.
That's why the email protocol has always had Bcc instead of some hack crrated by an OS developer.

Use BCC.   That's blind carbon copy.   And copy paste the address into the BCC field.  It really depends what e-mail program you use how to enable BCC.

  • Drag and drop from mail to address book not happening

Hi guys, I can no longer drag email addresses from Mail into Address Book. The address just bounces back. I've repaired permissions, installed the latest security update, repaired permissions again, rebooted twice. Any ideas?
    Mail 4.5. Address Book 5.0.3 (883). Mac OS 10.6.8. MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB Ram, 666MHz DDR2 SDRAM.

Hi mbriscoe, I've since upgraded to Lion and the same downgrade of functionality exists. I can no longer drag and drop an address from Mail into Address Book. I now have to click name, wait for menu, select Add to Address Book, go into Address Book and find the name I just added, then drag the name into the specific group I want it to be in. It used to be very useful, the drag and drop, in an "it just works" kind of way. Now it's not.

  • 'Mail' and 'Address Book' not communicating

I have recently started using 'Mail' and 'Address Book'.
There is a problem: These programs don't seem to communicate. When I address an e-mail, the addressee is not auto-filled from 'Address Book'. Likewise, I can't select a name in 'Address Book' and e-mail to that person.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

In Address Book, what happens if you click the label (home, work ...) beside a contact's email address?
In Mail's Preferences/Composing have you selected "Automatically Complete Addresses"?

  • Mail and Address Book Not Speaking to Each Other

I recently upgraded to 10.7.4 and at that time decided to drop Thunderbird and Mozilla as my default Email set up.  I embraced using iCal, Mail, and Address Book.  I manage two POP based email accounts and 2 Gmail accounts for work.  I have a very long tree of folders based upon customers in my On My Mac - Email Archive.
It was a pain to get files up and over to Mail from Thunderbird in the first place.  I have used this set up for a few months and am not trying to get the most out of it.  I am having issues with Address Book speaking with Mail.  Address Book has a bunch of contacts that have mostly been pulled our of my Gmail address book but none of my business POP account clients show up. I can not add them to the Address Book.  There is no error message.  Further more using Past Recipients shows nothing.  I am frustrated but can not afford to lose all the project information in previous emails.
    Any suggestions?

To reinstall the progams, who don't you use your computers CD drive?
This could help between the communcation between your Mac and your external Drive. I experienced this problem but with a external HD, and this link solved it.

  • Mail and Address Book not working

    Mac g5 2x2Ghz
    OS X 10.5.8
    Mail 3.6
    Address Book 4.1
Stopped working two applications: Mail, and Address Book
    Address Book does not start.
Mail sounded but nothing it can do, do not send mail is not downloading can not be changed - is dead.
Because Address Book is not working I can not synchronize their iPhones.
    Please help.

Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when trying to open AB.
In Mail's Window Menu, choose Connection Doctor, any red dots for status, if so what is the message?
Then click the Show Details button & Check again.

  • Mail Group addresses not the same as Address Book contact group addresses.

A group in my Address Book does not show up in my Mail address book the same. The Mail addresses for my group includes ALL my contacts. How do we fix this problem? I am afraid to send a group e-mail in case it goes to everyone else in my address book. We set up the group in the address book via drag and drop.

That's what I thought.... Although when I log on to Mobile Me through the internet the sender's name there appears just like it does in my address book, so I thought there would be a way to set it in mail.

  • Group Addresses will not send

    Hello to all-
I hope this works, it's been frustrating.
I have sent Group letters before, but now it will not work for some reason.
Here's the deal: I send Group letters of my family, with an image attachment (I click 'Send Windows Friendly' too), just as an update of who we look like, etc. This group has about 35 - 40 people.
Now, for some reason, it does not work.
I sent the email to myself as an individual, and sent the email as a couple of addresses, with the comma (not as a group). And I created a group of the same two addresses, and it did not send. So I thinking it's the group feature, rather than the letter or the attachment.
I changed the content of the letter and reduced the size of the image attachment too....to no avail (the image is a .jpg).
I even turned off the computer and started anew as well.
    Hoping someone has an answer.....
    Thanks!

    Had a similar problem.
I discovered that after you enter the "Group Name" in Mail, if you place the cursor on the group name and press the lelft mouse button a "contextaul" type menu appears which contains "Expand the Group"
If you select it then all the individual addresses appear in the "To" line and you will be able to send your mail successfully.

  • Mavericks Mail group address issue

Since upgrading to Mavericks, the method to NOT show all email addresses in a contacts group does not work.  We have unchecked the show all group email addresses in Mail Preferences, but just typing in a Contacts group in the TO line shows only the group name (like Friends), but when the actual email is sent, all email addresses are visible to all recepients.  This has always worked in the past.
We realize that you can start your new email by Control-clickling the group in Contacts, but that is a poor work-around, since you can't start the email first.
Anyone have a fix?  We have duplicated this on both our MBAs.

I have the SAME Problem, exactly, very frustrating.
Before Mavericks, this has not happened.
    Thank you

  • Create a DL group which does not expand to see members in outlook 2010

    Hi
I have 2010 exchange server and client side outlook 2010. A special request come from my management, to create a distribution list where the users are  restricted not  to see who are the members of that group.
Is is possible to restrict the expansion of the this particular  DL group?
    Thanks
    Venky

Sorry, but hiding the membership of a static distribution group isn't possible -- at least not with Exchange.
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dgoldman/archive/2007/12/14/why-hiding-distribution-memberships-in-exchange-2007-is-not-supported.aspx
You can, however, manipulate the permissions on a group with ADUC:
    http://exchangepedia.com/2007/11/how-to-hide-distribution-group-membership.html
However, following that advice may prevent even the owner of the DL from seeing (or managing) the membership of the group.
Which leads to more extensive manipulation (which allows for ADDing members but not for removing them):
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/kamleshk/archive/2012/02/01/managing-distribution-groups-with-un-hidden-membership.aspx
Even with all of that, it's still possible (with persistence) to discover the membership -- the address book still shows the groups you're a member of. And let's not forget the use of read receipts. :-)
All in all, the best way to deal with this is to use a dynamic distribution group where there are no static members.

  • Mail's Address harvesting - NOT iPhone or Mobile Me related!

Mail.app offers the option to hover over an address in a Mail and have it added sutomatically to the Address Book at the next sync. Problem is, if the email has more than one address in it, it tends to get confused, and can only show the details for Address 1, even when copying Adddress 2 for ccontact 2.
    Any ideas?
    TIA

While I do appreciate your popping by to help, you don't seem to quite understand what the question was asking. I was not talking about an email address, but the address of a house where someone lives which Mail has a problem with.
In Mail, if you hover your mouse over the name and address in the body of the email, a box appears around it with an arrow over the bottom right corner of said box. Click on this box, and a dialog pops up with the address, telephone number, fax number, plus the email and website addresses (if they are in the email) and asks if you want to Add them to an existing contact, or to create a new contact in Address Book.
This is a new behaviour for Leopard that was not present in Tiger, which you seem to be more familiar with.
However, if the email you have received has, say, three addresses - perhaps a friend, a hotel and a new contact, Mail keeps a lot of the data for the first one you hover over and pick so if you then want to hover over the others, you do have to carefully check they do not have the wrong info. Also, the name of the address is automatically listed as the sender of the email, not the name of the person in the first line of the address.

  • Apple Mail group addresses

I manage a distribution list of 200 emails. How do I send to group without showing all the individual emails in the address bar? I tried to just sending with the group name but it would not go.

I saw your 2011 post in which you said that you manage a distribution list of 200 addresses. I assume that you've created the group in the "Contacts" application. Is that the case?
I've been wondering whether there's a maximum number of addresses that you can have in a "Contacts" group, because I've had some trouble with some people in my group of about 65 not receiving my messages.
Do you have all 200 addresses in a single "Contacts" group?
Does anyone else have information about a maximum -- effective -- size for a "Contacts" group being used to send messages?
    Thanks,
