Mail hangs - New install

My sister gave me her 2009 MacBook Air.  I've cleaned it off, installed Lion, then did the upgrade to Mountain Lion from App Store.
I cannot get Mail to setup my son's iCloud (mobile me) address.  It just hangs and gives spinning beach balls all over the place.  This is not an upgrade with any previous mail.  The MBA was setup clean.  I setup my son's iCloud account in prefs.  I brought up mail, typed in his email address and it appears to find him then the beachballs start.  Each "continue" or "create" button is met with 5-10 minutes of spinning beach ball.  This is on creating a new account.
I've force quit, I've rebooted, I've removed the stuff in the mail directory.  It simply does not work.  Any ideas?

I had format the Leopard (10.5) and install new Snow Leopard.
Now i am trying to back up my Mail to my new windows using the TIme Machine External Hard drive, I have follow a few step write on the forum here but not good.
I try to open the Mail app then click on Time Machine, but I can't go back to previous date (the date I backup). Very frustrating and this is for my business email, i can't lost it.
Please help. i am quite new to this mac. please take it easy on me. thank you.
I'm not sure just what you've done, or why.
By far the easiest and most reliable way to install Snow Leopard is to just install it -- there was no need to erase your internal HD.
If you erased your internal HD, then installed Snow Leopard, when your Mac started up, +Setup Assistant+ asked if you already had a Mac and wanted to transfer your data. That's probably what you should have done, but apparently you didn't.
If you haven't made any significant changes to your system, and haven't done any Time Machine backups since upgrading to Snow Leopard, I'd recommend starting over. Erase your internal HD again, install Snow Leopard again, and let +Setup Assistant+ transfer all your data. See #19 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum. It even has a link to a little demonstration.
But you cannot do that if you've done any Time Machine backups since installing Snow Leopard.
If you have, or if there's some other reason not to do this, post back and we'll find an alternative.

  • Mail hangs after SL install

After installing Snow Leopard, Mail is now hanging.
I've tried deleting the ~/Library/Mail folder, after which Mail restarts with all my accounts present, but obviously no mail.
I've tried restoring the ~/Library/Mail folder and restarted Mail, thinking that perhaps the conversion on the upgrade didn't work, but the result is the same with Mail hanging.
I've tried deleting the mail plist file and restarting - but it still hangs and no new plist is created.
There's presumably something wrong with the content of the Mail folder. Mail under 10.5.8 has been working fine - no problems at all.
    Anyone any ideas ?
    Many thanks.

This seems to have done the trick ..... VERY weird ..
    1. Moved ~/Library/Mail somewhere else.
    2. Started Mail
    3. Mail then put up the "need to import mailboxes" message
    4. BEFORE I pressed continue, I moved my mail back to ~/Library/Mail
    5. Then hit Continue
    6. Import started converting messages, and completed.
    7. Started mail - all looks OK (So far !!!)

  • Mail Hangs after 10.5.6 update

After installing the 10.5.6 update via Software Update Mail started to Hang. Odd, it worked for about a day then turned south, very south. I have no 3rd party add-ons. Simple set up to SBC global DSL via yahoo. I can't even create a new account because Mail hangs within 5-10 seconds of launch-beach ball and force quit. I have restored a pre update version of mail.app via Time Machine, but that does not change a thing. Kept both versions. I don't know what other elements could/should be restored from Time Machine to regain pre update functionality. Please, any suggestions.

After losing hours of my life trying to find an answer, I tried mucking around myself. Found that Time Machine can indeed restore Mail, or at least it did repair my problem. Rather than replacing Mail.app and main library files, which did nothing, I restored my 'User' Mail LIbrary ( 'damaged user Account' >Library>Mail ) to Sunday before the 10.5.6 update. Be sure to Import mailboxes from the splash screen Welcome to Mail Window that will appear when you relaunch Mail after TM restore, this will restore all the mail boxes as they were, otherwise everything is empty. I now will be archiving my mail diligently, I promise, even before the new year. Seems the 10.5.6 upgrade has caused many many problems in many many areas, Mail just being the one I was blessed with. Good Luck. Time Machine is Wonderful when it is on an external HD.

  • APPLE PLEASE HELP! Mail hangs after start, address book never launches!

I've been reviewing postings since friday last week about issues with mail/address book after 10.5.2 and here's a summary:
    • Symptom 1: Mail launches slow
    • symptom 2: mail hangs while downloading new mail (in my case from 1 particular account according to the activity viewer, while downloading the last, most recent msg, the msg does not have attachments but it stays downloading forever, force quit required)
    • symptom 3: mail does not send msgs (in my case it sends one-by-one after each force quit/relaunch)
    • symptom 4: duplicate msgs appear, particularly msgs received after 10.5.2
    • symptom 5: mail does not quit,, force quit necessary. in my case after i force quit/ relaunch several times mail launches somewhat "normal" but after a reboot or relaunch, problems appear again. (duplicates never go away)
    • issues with mail after 10.5.2 are not ISP/email host related, we all have different ISPs and hosts and we all have the same symptoms.
    • i also experienced problems with address book, it starts but the window never opens or if it does is completely empty, no functions are possible. this also affected ichat as the info for the contacts cant be retrieved from address book.
thanks for reading and please contribute to the thread if you agree with the summary, APPLE NEEDS TO HELP US!!!

    Hi everybody,
I have received an update from my friend who suffered from the Mail problem. In fact, the errors occurring AFTER the restore from Time Machine were due to an ISP's problem. So the restore really worked after all.
So to put it in a nutshell, I would recommend the following process:
    1. Quit (or force-quit iff necessary) Mail asap when the application gets stuck. Do not open Mail again.
    2. Restore ~/Library/Mail folder from the youngest Time Machine Backup you know Mail was behaving properly.
    3. Run the 10.5.2 Combo Updater while all applications are shut down (just to be on the safe side).
    4. After the inevitable Restart, check Software Update for more updates and install if necessary.
    5. Run Mail and let it rebuild all the Mailboxes.
This should work fine to solve the problem. With the AddressBook case, I should try a similar workflow to get it fixed, yet I haven't tried that one so far.
BTW: I can only encourage you to really get an external drive and use Time Machine frequently. Even if it seems to be expensive in the first place, imho TM is the best piece of software Apple has been inventing for ages. In my case, I also tried to save money and took a leftover 40 gig HD from an old server and got myself a usb-2.0 external box for around 10 euros. Although space is limited, i have been backing up hourly since 1 February and there's still 12 gig to go. I only back um my home directory, as all my personal data, settings and mail are stored there.

  • Mail hangs when it receives a report that an e-mail could not be delivered.

    Hi Guys :o),
One bug which is really bugging me is that every time I receive a bounced e-mail report, with a subject line containing words to the effect of:
    "Undeliverable. Return to sender."
    or:
"The message could not be delivered."
Mail is unable to pull any subsequent e-mails down from the POP server.
So I junk the report, and then I delete it.
However, lo and behold, the errant e-mail is INSTANTLY back in my Inbox, plus there's now AT LEAST one copy in my Mail Junk, and also AT LEAST one copy in my Mail Trash.
Round and round I go, junk, delete, junk, delete, but the errant e-mail refuses to go away, and Mail continues to be unable to pull any new e-mails down from the POP server.
Eventually, Mail just hangs, with a spinning disk.
Even a force quit and relaunch of Mail doesn't resolve the spinning disk.
The errant message just sits there, REFUSING to be deleted.
The only way to get round this bug is for me to go up to my POP server, delete the report, and then PURGE DELETE the report - on the POP server !
I then have to go in to my Mac, and go:
--> Users --> Home --> Library --> Mail --> Account --> Inbox, Junk, and Deleted
and then manually drag ALL copies of the report into the trash on the Desktop.
It happens so often (pretty much every day) that I've had to create a shortcut in my Dock which leads straight to the Account folder.
Mail has always been buggy under ALL versions of OS X, but this ongoing bug drives me crazy, mainly because there's NO logical reason for it.
Just because I receive an e-mail message from the Hotmail server, for example, which says that my e-mail could not be delivered, usually because the recipient's inbox is full, or because no such address exists, on paper, that's just another e-mail which Mail is pulling down from the POP server.
However, EVERY TIME I receive such a report, Mail hangs.
I'm reluctant to rebuild my Mailboxes, in case I lose any messages, but I will if you advise it.
Any workaround would be gratefully received.
With best wishes to everyone in the Apple community, especially those on the Infinity Loop.
In particular, I wish Mr Jobs a very speedy recovery.
    Cool,
    Michael T

Quit Mail, Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place, same for the Mail Downloads folder... only the plist is separate.
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.
If that doesn't do it and you can afford to redo all your Rules, try these & reboot...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.backup

  • Problems with migration on a new install

I turned on my new 27" iMac, and when it asked if I wanted to import info, I was not ready because I did not have the right cable to connect my Time Machine External B/U, so I passed, and created a Bootcamp partition.
I installed Windows XP just fine, and then installed Parallels on the main admin account, and made sure it worked. then tried to import my prior user account by connecting both computers with an ethernet cable, and turned on file sharing. I had problems with lots of spinning beach ball of death on the old mac, so I figured moving to the new machine would get rid of it.
So I used Migration assistant to import from my current computer connected with Cat 5 cable, and it got 99% of the way through, then hung, like it could not gather the final info from the old computer to finish the migration, so I forced quit Migration on both computers, since there is no other way to exit w/o a successful install.
The account was there, though when I log in as that user, I see lots of folders I don't have permission to access like my documents and downloads.
So I go back to the old computer, and do an updated time machine back-up, then connect that external HD to the new iMac and do a 2nd import to a fresh user. All goes well, and I am able to log in, however, my new install of Parallels does not show up on the desktop, rather my old Parallels shows up with its different name. And I am getting spinning beach balls for 10-20 seconds in Safari, which I don't like, as something from the old computer must be corrupt to be doing this like a preference file or ?.
I have had a Mac since the early 1990's, and always only had one account that I used to run the computer, never creating a "User" account to run day to day, and I am not fully understanding the relationships between admin & user.
    So my questions are;
    1. what is the best way to take my documents, movies, photos, music and such from the 2nd migration, and transfer to a freshly created user account that would have no corrupted preferences causing the spinning problems. Do I put them in the shared folder, then access them from the new account, and transfer them that way, or does the admin do it?
    2. What do I do about the applications that were imported, can the main admin move them and possibly the above documents to the main applications folder?
    3. What about fonts and such, should they be put in the main library, or a user library?
    4. Where can I find info on the allowable actions & limits of admin and users? what they can & can't do.
    5. On my admin desktop, I can see my HD, Bootcamp partition, and Parallels shortcut. It is not visible on my test account, or another user account I created for #1 above. How can I give that user access?
    6. How can I access the new Parallels install that shows up on the admin hd, instead of the old imported one in my user account?
    7. How can I access the 2 external HD's that show up in admin and not users?
    8. Can I safely delete the user that was created from my first unsuccessful migration that I had to force quit and has permission issues?
Thanks for your help, really appreciate getting up to speed on users...

No offense, though none of your replies are of any help. I am not migrating from a PPC to Intel, I don't need to reinstall, I am not a new user migrating for the first time, and I am not having any font problems.
    Let me try again.
If I have a problem with an imported user account like it hangs doing certain things, how do I move all the data to a new user on the same PC, just drag all the documents, library, and similar folders to the shared folder, or the user folder?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Adobe AIR installation issue - hangs at "Installing..."

    Hello everyone!
I know questions similar to this have been asked many times before, but I did not manage to find the solution to my problem after a few hours of reading and trying the various 'solutions' around the net and this forum. I apologise if I missed it.
I cannot seem to install Adobe AIR. I run a freshly downloaded installation executable, but it hangs at "Installing..." and 0% progress for a very, very, very long time, if I let it. This last try has been going for 45 minutes as I write. The only way to get out of the installer is through Task Manager and killing the service, as hitting 'Cancel' just makes the installer attempt to cancel endlessly.
    I tried installing it in safe mode but there it gives an error saying I may not have administrative permissions (which I do have);
    I created a new user account;
    I "run as Administrator" and am using an account with administrative rights;
    I tried it through the command line with putting the file in c:\ and running "AdobeAIRInstaller.exe -silent" without quotes from c:\;
    I have shut off all my antivirus software;
    I tried downloading it with a different browser;
    I tried using the MicrosoftFixit.ProgramInstallUninstall, and took Adobe AIR off the list;
I tried uninstalling all Adobe products and then reinstalling them, with Adobe AIR last
... and some more things, but none of this has helped. Here's what the installation log generates when it hangs:
[2012-12-25:01:16:36] Runtime Installer begin with version 3.5.0.880 on Windows 7 x86

I would much appreciate any help or advice anyone can give me regarding this! This is starting to drive me nuts.
    Thank you.
( also, this is my first post, so please forgive if I've done anything wrong or not according to etiquette! )

Ok, I understand.  So before we continue, we really need to figure out what the exact error is.  Can you, on at least 2 systems, generate the MSI logs we'll need?  Here's a document that explains how to enable logging and where to find the logs once they've been created:
    How to enable Windows logging
Once you've enabled logging, try installing again.  Grab the newly created msi logs and either post here or email me at [email protected]  I'll examine the logs and see if we can find a common issue between the systems.
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • 64 bit OEL install hangs at installing dogtail in OVM 2.2

I recently upgraded my server to OVM 2.2 and swapped out the dual core AMDs to quad core AMDs at the same time.
Since then I have been unable to create any 64 bit OEL servers. In every instance the install hangs when Installing dogtail-0.6.1-2.el5.noarch
This used to work at 2.1.5 and I can deploy the existing templates, but they are OEL 5.3.

  • What does it take to get a 7232? Unacceptable on a new install....

I think it's absolutely absurd that Verizon FiOS doesn't provide you with the latest hardware on a new install.  They had the audacity to install a Motorola 6416 first.  It only took a few days to notice it's ancient specifications and miniscule hard drive.  A call to FiOS customer service assured me that I would be sent the latest (I was very specific of this) model with a 500GB hard drive overnight.  Great!  Fantastic response and no hassles by the rep.  Well today I open the box to find only a moderate upgrade to the Motorola 7216.  Glancing inside through the ventalation I can see that it has a 500 GB hard disk.  But really, Verizon?  When I siged up for Verizon Wireless, you didn't hand me a flip phone.
I understand having an upgrade process for existing customers.  If I had been a Verizon customer for a couple years I would gladly pay to upgrade to the latest device.  But for a brand new customer, they should give you the latest spec hardware.
I haven't even plugged in the 7216 they overnighted.  What can I do to get the right hardware for a new customer?

    Hello,
Many folks I know have the 7216 DVR and it has proven to be quite stable/durable as a set top box.
I have one at home and it has been great for the many years we've had it.
It even has an eSATA port at the back of it, which means I can hook-up an external hard drive to it if I need to do so for additional recording capacity.
Hence, the 7216 is satisfactory equipment for a new customer, and even luckier if you had received one with the 500 GB hard drive.
Have you noticed any issues with that 7216 STB that you had gotten in the mail?
If not, I would recommend keeping it. -- If it's not broken, don't fix it.

  • New install of SJS Ent 8 on Solaris, can't start Application Server 8.1

    Hello,
    Appreciate in advance your help.
Just downloaded and installed SJS 8.1 on a new Sun Solaris 10 box. I'm able to run the IDE and have started the Tomcat server, but when attempting to start the SJS 8.1 application server, I get:
The Sun Java System Application Server 8.1 could not start.
More information about the cause is in the Server log file.
    Possible reasons include:
    - Port conflicts. (use netstat -a to detect possible port numbers already used)
    - Incorrect server configuration
    - Corrupted Deployed Applications
    The problems are:
    - There is no server.log file in the expected directory at /opt/sun/jstudio_ent8/AppServ8.1UR2/domains/myDomain1/logs
    - I ran netstat -a, but could glean no useful information
    - I have not modified the server configuration since the new install
    - I have not deployed my application (since I can't start the server).
Forgive my ignorance since I'm not a Solaris expert. I would greatly appreciate your assistance.

No difference in server.log after setting level="FINEST".
Don't know if it would help, but the contents of my server.log file follow:

I do notice that the class path references jdk1.5.0_04. When installing SJS I selected the separately installed jdk1.5.0_07. Could that be causing the problem?

  • Mail hangs when trying to open excel file

    Hi there,
I've installed goodreader, Docs to Go and numbers on my ipad. Unfortunately, mail hangs when i try to open a spreadsheet. The option to use either one of the apps pops up, however, i'm not able to select either numbers or Docs to Go to open the file.
I've restarted the ipad to no avail. Does anyone have any ideas about this?
    Thanks

Running disk repair a second time seems to have fixed the issue.

  • Mail hanging

Since updating to Lion, Mail hangs for ever while trying to retrieve messages. I have my iPhone connected to my iMac all the time whilst I am in my study, and I can hear the alert telling me when new mail arrives on my phone but when I go to Mail it won't retrieve new messages until I Quit and relaunch it. (Just the latest in a long line of issues I've had since updating to Lion...)

    with regard to my question:
Mail hangs on start and I have to force quit to get out of it. The question was answered from another person running 10.4 Here was the response:
    will this work for 10.3.9
The Mail.app preference file may have some corruption.
With the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Copy the Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist. Move the com.apple.mail.plist file to the Desktop.
Note: When moving the com.apple.mail.plist file out of the Preferences folder will require re-entering all email account information when re-launching Mail.
The only exception will be a .Mac account which should be re-entered automatically.
Launch Mail and deline any prompt to import mailboxes. As required, after re-entering all email account information the Mail.app should rediscover the existing account named folder(s) and mailboxes at Home > Library > Mail.
If this is successful and after confirming all mailboxes were successfully rediscovered, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder and old com.apple.mail.plist file from the Desktop.

  • Completely Remove Mac Mail and Re-Install?

So I've had this problem on one of my Macs for months now. All the mail I send goes to the outbox and never sends... ever. I've trashed just about everything... I've re-done the accounts multiple times...
It doesn't matter what email account I use, they ALL go to the outbox and never send. I have the exact same setup on a different G5 and everything works fine there.
I'm assuming there is something corrupted somewhere in the mail program (but I've even tried replacing the broken application with a copy from the other computer... still no fix).
So I just want to start over... I have my Tiger install discs... I don't want to just install over Mail though... I want to make sure I get rid of it totally and re-install... and hope for the best.
How do I do this, and how do I keep what mail and save folders I have? (All the accounts correctly receive the mail... I'm just completely unable to send anything out).
    Any help would be appreciated.

I have the exact same problem. The other problem that I also have is that when I click Mail on my dock nothing happens the Mail window never opens, so I have to go to the menu bar and click Mail>File>New Viewer Window. I have check Connection Doctor and everything is fine. I have also done Disk Utility>Repair Disk Permissions and everything is fine. The only App that is behaving like this since this morning is Mail.
    Please Help!
    Jerry

  • Mail hang when getting email from multiple POP accounts

    I'm posting this issue again.
Mail hangs while getting new mail from multiple POP accounts almost every time. When it does, only Force Quit can quit it.
The following DID NOT fix the hang:
    - Reconstructing all mail boxes
    - Exporting, deleting and reimporting all mail boxes
    - Disabling all rules
    - Deleting anti-spam history
    - Deleting all emails from all mail boxes
Testing each POP account individually while putty the other two offline works fine.
I also noticed that sometimes the new mail counter in Inbox displays 2-4 new messages while there is no new ones. Switching boxes/folders and back to Inbox fixes it.
    The POP accounts are:
    One plain text POP
    One secure POP
    One GMail POP
    Can anyone help?

    You’re welcome.
I did try to clear the junk mail preferences
The Junk Mail preferences cannot be “cleared”. What do you mean?
it crashes almost every single time.
It doesn’t crash (i.e. quit unexpectedly). It freezes (i.e. becomes unresponsive), right?
I transfered my data to a Mac Mini. I had the same exact problem on it too!
so it seems it has nothing to do with the OS plugins or the setup I have.
Well, that would depend on what exactly does “I transfered my data” mean...
Try first disabling all the rules in Preferences > Rules AND the junk filter in Preferences > Junk Mail. If the problem persists, proceed as follows.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, and ensuring that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your mail is locally stored.
    3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see any other “Envelope Index”-named file there, delete it as well.
    4. Move any “IMAP-”, “Mac-”, or “Exchange-” account folders to the Trash. Note that you can do this with IMAP-type accounts because they store mail on the server and Mail can easily re-create them. DON’T trash any “POP-” account folders, as that would cause all the mail stored there to be lost.
    5. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index — Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
    6. As a side effect of having removed the IMAP account folders, those accounts may be in an “offline” state now. Do Mailbox > Go Online to bring them back online.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.
