Mail hangs on account setup

I am a bit of a novice on the Mac, but I am trying!
When I launch the mail app and try to add an account the application hangs and all I can do is Force a Quit.
Can I check the mail app setup or reinstall it?
Any help much appreciated
thanks

Not sure what you mean. Are you trying to set up Mail for the first time or do you already have other mail accounts working and are trying to set up a new one? What does “the application hangs” mean? What are you observing exactly?

    Hello,
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found [[Troubleshoot and diagnose Firefox problems#w_5-reinstall-firefox|here]].
<b>WARNING:</b> Do not run Firefox's uninstaller or use a third party remover as part of this process, because that could permanently delete your Firefox data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. <u>These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!</u>
Please report back to say if this helped you!
    Thank you.

  • Mail hang when getting email from multiple POP accounts

    I'm posting this issue again.
Mail hangs while getting new mail from multiple POP accounts almost every time. When it does, only Force Quit can quit it.
The following DID NOT fix the hang:
    - Reconstructing all mail boxes
    - Exporting, deleting and reimporting all mail boxes
    - Disabling all rules
    - Deleting anti-spam history
    - Deleting all emails from all mail boxes
Testing each POP account individually while putty the other two offline works fine.
I also noticed that sometimes the new mail counter in Inbox displays 2-4 new messages while there is no new ones. Switching boxes/folders and back to Inbox fixes it.
    The POP accounts are:
    One plain text POP
    One secure POP
    One GMail POP
    Can anyone help?

    You’re welcome.
I did try to clear the junk mail preferences
The Junk Mail preferences cannot be “cleared”. What do you mean?
it crashes almost every single time.
It doesn’t crash (i.e. quit unexpectedly). It freezes (i.e. becomes unresponsive), right?
I transfered my data to a Mac Mini. I had the same exact problem on it too!
so it seems it has nothing to do with the OS plugins or the setup I have.
Well, that would depend on what exactly does “I transfered my data” mean...
Try first disabling all the rules in Preferences > Rules AND the junk filter in Preferences > Junk Mail. If the problem persists, proceed as follows.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, and ensuring that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your mail is locally stored.
    3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see any other “Envelope Index”-named file there, delete it as well.
    4. Move any “IMAP-”, “Mac-”, or “Exchange-” account folders to the Trash. Note that you can do this with IMAP-type accounts because they store mail on the server and Mail can easily re-create them. DON’T trash any “POP-” account folders, as that would cause all the mail stored there to be lost.
    5. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index — Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
    6. As a side effect of having removed the IMAP account folders, those accounts may be in an “offline” state now. Do Mailbox > Go Online to bring them back online.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • Why is the "From:" field being changed in Mac Mail.  I have multiple gmail accounts setup and it seems to change the "FROM" field even though I've selected which account to use to send the email.

    So
I've got multiple gmail accounts setup in Mac Mail.
Somtimes when I send or forward emails, it uses the wrong FROM field even though I'm declaring
    specifically which account to use.
This becomes apparent when the person replies to my message and it goes to the wrong account

Check you accounts in Mail and make sure each account has the correct outgoing server address. Check the box to use only that server.
Second, go to the gmail website and in settings under the account tab, make sure you have the correct settings for replying to messages.

  • Nokia Mail - "Other" Account Setup Not Working

Help.  Nokia Mail Other/Manual Setup Not Accessible.
A previously manually setup IMAP account got deleted from my C3-00.
It is an account that requires manual setup, but when I tried to set it up again under "Other" the Nokia Mail App will no longer let me.  It had been working before and I inputted manual settings when it was previously set up.
Now under "Other" instead of going from the mail address and password screen to the manual setup (POP3/IMAP) screen it just says: "Could not sign in. Try again."
The email address is on the @mytyndale.ca and I need to input these settings manually:
IMAP setting:  Server name: pod51011.outlook.com  // Port: 993 // Encryption method: SSL
SMTP setting: Server name: pod51011.outlook.com // Port: 587 // Encryption method: TLS
Please help or fix this for me.
If there is a way to force manual setup that I am missing let me know about that.
NOTE: I was able to get the account setup by putting in an incorrect email address and then putting the correct login information in the manual setup  set up sceeen.  But Nokia Mail will not let my change my email address after the setup has been made.

SunshineBC, on your desktop computer, when you go for webmail.eastlink.ca, are you able to login with your password? (double-checks we are using the right credentials). Are you able to log-in via webmail.dccnet.com?
Now, let us double check the origin of your request (IP address outside of Canada). Please, try the same from within the Nokia browser of your phone because it does use a proxy based IP address. Does it work? If yes, please, try Opera Mini as well – because that useses yet another IP address. In all these browsers (yours on your desktop, in Nokia browser, and in Opera Mini), please, check your IP with my-ip.mobi. Please post your IPs and results (worked, did not work) and I check the location of that IPs if there is a did-not-work. Perhaps Eastlink has an outside filter in combination with some passwords – the procedures above checks that.

  • Disable/Bypass the "Mail Account Setup" wizard

How can I disable or bypass the "Mail Account Setup" wizard and just create a new account in the "Account Settings" panel? The "Mail Account Setup" wizard won't let me get that far without jumping through all its unhelpful hoops, and I don't know to disable or bypass it.

"I have been having people with almost the same question for years"
Then obviously there's a need for it to actually be addressed. Right?
I (and apperently many other people as well) have a set of connection settings, all we want to do is enter them, but TBird keep trying to force us into handholding mode, autodetecting, etc. The thing won't even LET you enter the settings without forcing it's own autodetection routines first. And why force *everyone* (not just average Joes) to use a completely *separate* settings panel for new accounts when you ALREADY have an account settings panel? A panel which, I might add, is FAR more useful than the redundant "new account" one because it exposes all the account settings, not just a small subset.
Is it really that hard to let us non-dummies actually *just enter their settings*??? Especially when you fully admit you get a lot of people asking to *do just that*?
Why try to force "the Mozilla way" on all your users when Mozilla makes such enormous claims about supposedly beleiving so heavily in customization and personalization?
Frankly, you really don't have to userstand it at all. Obviously there *is* a need for it, otherwise you wouldn't be "having people with almost the same question for years". Doesn't that tell you something?

The new dialog added by that add-on is trivial to bypass *and* it doesn't force an auto-config attempt before allowing manual config, so I'm very happy with it as a solution, thanks.

  • Mail hangs upon retrieving last mail from POP account

    Hi,
I have a problem with retrieving mail from a POP account. Mail seem to hang after the last new mail has been retrieved from the account. E.g, the activity viewer shows "Fetching 7 of 7", the progress bar indicates that all mails have been retrieved, but never completes. Pressing the Stop button next to the progress bar does not have an effect. Mail then indefinitly hangs in the "STOPPING" phase. In that state I cannot retrieve mails for other accounts, either. I have to force quit Mail.
Has anyone experiences similar problems and found a solution?
    Thanks,
    Sascha

    Hey there Fabian,
If I understand correctly you are going to Settings > Mail, Contacts, and Calendars > Add Account but that last option is not usable because it is gray. In testing this for you, I was able to reproduce this by enabling Restrictions and denying Account Changes. You can configure that with this article:

  • OSX Mail account setup window will not accept imap input

When trying to add icloud account to  OSX Mail the input dialoge  that is automatically sent from iclould to set up the account does appear in the account setup page. But the receiving Imap field remains grey even though the correct information is there (greyed) so when I go to save it refuses because there is no entry in that field. It could be that I am living in China at the moment I have 2 other email addresses that I have trouble receiving mail from so I redirected every thing to icloud because that was the only one I could rely on but now that doesnt work either. All sorts of corrupted keychain entries pop up as well with lots of extra attributes allowing access to many applications. I have deleted them. It would seem that when I access my mail account s via safari the login pops up a second time but looking closely I find Iam already logged in. So I click the another page to avoid it. I feel that there is more to it. I even reinstalled OSX Lion.
My Ipad is not so affected but still delays and missing rerouted emails.

  • Mail + account setup properly, mail fetching starts but emails don't appear

I'm using Apple's "Mail" program for the first time (after having used Eudora for 20 years).
    I successfully:
    - Imported all my Eudora mailboxes + contents
    - Set up my email account settings
    - Connected to the Internet and sent myself a test email
HOWEVER, when I "Check Mail," and watch the "Activity" window, it seems to show my computer successfully connecting to the email server and all my pending emails being "fetched," *but when the fetching is complete, they have not appeared in my Inbox!* I don't get an error message or anything like that -- everything seems to be working exactly as it is supposed to be. The only problem is that the emails simply don't get downloaded to my computer, even though the Activity monitor seems to show them doing so.
I finally was able to open the "Mail" program's "Account info" window (it's not easy to find!), and it reveals that the same 15 pending emails are still awaiting me on my ISP's mail server, even after repeated fetchings of them. While watching both the "Account info" window and "Activity" window, I once again click "Get All New Mail," watch the 15 emails seemingly getting fetched, but when it's all over (3 seconds) -- they're still on the server and still not on my hard drive.
I don't know how to fix this glitch because the program doesn't seem to think anything's going wrong!
Obviously I must have mistakenly clicked some setting that prevents the emails from being downloaded to my computer, but I've scanned the Preferences pane and every single menu option dozens of times, and can't find what I've done wrong.
Any suggestions? i came so close to making the migration without any major problems, and on the very last step something went awry. Very frustrating!

    As to "Rules":
I'd already investigated that many times. The only "Rule" was a disabled unchecked rule about "Get Apple News," a subscription to the Apple RSS feed. However, at your suggestion, I also just now deleted it, and then refetched the mail afterward, with the the exact same unchanged result -- still nothing arrives. (Tried several times.)
As for the "Junk" mail setting:
The only two boxes checked were "Enable Junk Mail filtering," and "When junk mail arrives, mark it as junk mail, but leave it in my Inbox." So, even if the incoming mail had been marked as junk, I still should have seen it in my Inbox. Also, Junk's "Advanced" box is greyed out and unavailable to click. All that is moot, however, because I just now unchecked "Enable Junk Mail filtering," so the entire Junk preference pane is now greyed out and disabled; and even after that, when I check for new mail, I get the exact same problem as before, unchanged.
    As to "POP" vs. "IMAP":
My account is supposed to be a "POP" account, and it is indeed shown as being a "POP" account in the Accounts preference pane.
But here's a new observation I just made:
When checking mail, in the left-hand sidebar on my "Inbox" window, at the bottom is a section called "MAIL ACTIVITY." When I check for new mail, in this activity box it says "Incoming messages, 1 of 24" then "Incoming messages 2 of 24" all the way up to "Incoming messages 24 of 24," with a blue progress bar filling up below it -- +exactly as you would expect if the mail was successfully being fetched+ (it's up to 24 messages on the server now). Yet after all that, after all 24 are shown as being fetched -- *there is still NOTHING new in my !nbox*! (Or in any other mailbox.) And in the previously mentioned "Account Info" window, afterwards all the emails are still shown as awaiting me unfetched on the server.
So mysterious and frustrating! Every setting and activity seems to be exactly as it should be, with the sole problem that nothing ever actually shows up! The answer is probably so simple, I can't see it.

  • Mail Hangs after 10.5.6 update

After installing the 10.5.6 update via Software Update Mail started to Hang. Odd, it worked for about a day then turned south, very south. I have no 3rd party add-ons. Simple set up to SBC global DSL via yahoo. I can't even create a new account because Mail hangs within 5-10 seconds of launch-beach ball and force quit. I have restored a pre update version of mail.app via Time Machine, but that does not change a thing. Kept both versions. I don't know what other elements could/should be restored from Time Machine to regain pre update functionality. Please, any suggestions.

After losing hours of my life trying to find an answer, I tried mucking around myself. Found that Time Machine can indeed restore Mail, or at least it did repair my problem. Rather than replacing Mail.app and main library files, which did nothing, I restored my 'User' Mail LIbrary ( 'damaged user Account' >Library>Mail ) to Sunday before the 10.5.6 update. Be sure to Import mailboxes from the splash screen Welcome to Mail Window that will appear when you relaunch Mail after TM restore, this will restore all the mail boxes as they were, otherwise everything is empty. I now will be archiving my mail diligently, I promise, even before the new year. Seems the 10.5.6 upgrade has caused many many problems in many many areas, Mail just being the one I was blessed with. Good Luck. Time Machine is Wonderful when it is on an external HD.
