Mail hangs trying to retrieve messages

I'm baffled by a recent problem.
When retrieving messages (from my gmail account) all I get is the spinning icon - not the beach ball, the little grey circle thing. It just spins, and will do so forever. I then have to 'force quit' Mail in order to close the program.
I have no trouble accessing new mail through the gmail webmail site, neither do I have any other connection problems. I ran Connection Doctor and it reported everything was fine.
Sending mail seems to be working fine - it's just receiving that's the problem.
Since reading a few other posts I have run the 'Rebuild Mailboxes', and repaired permissions. Neither of these did anything helpful.
Any help will be most appreciated...
thanks

Thanks to the discussion in the post 2 minutes earlier my problem is resolved - moved the MessageRules.plist and MessageRules.plist.backup to the Desktop and everything seemed to work.
Too bad it didn't solve the earlier posters problem

  • Mail hangs when receiving new messages on .Mac

I'm using the latest mail and Tiger, but have had this issue for a few point updates.
I have a .Mac e-mail account, and can send messages with no problem. When Mail tries to receive a new, unread message, however, it hangs - the Activity window reads "Fetching New Mail" and even shows the subject header, but goes no farther. If I try to do anything else after this, such as changing folders or sending mail, everything hangs. Mail won't quit, either, so I have to force quit.
I've tried deleting the .plist file, moving the Mail folder, moving the Envelope Index. I have no third-party extras installed.
    Help?
    PowerBook G4 12" DVI   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I have exactly the same problem. I have two laptops, one running OS 10.6.2 and the other a G4 Powerbook running !0.5.8. On the Snow Leopard machine the iMap accounts (x4) are working fine, but hotmail mail and one Pop3 account both behave the same way - hanging indefinitely exactly half way through completion of the download of a couple of dozen emails, with download speed dropping to 0k. It has not been possible to download anything from either account now since November 6th. I have to check the mail on these two accounts via a web interface. The only solutions I have heard so far seem quite hit and miss. I am not particularly keen to do anything so radical as back up, reformat the hard drive, and re-instal the System / buy a new computer, or any of those other drastic fix-all-solutions sometims proposed when people cannot guess what is wrong. An informed work around would be very much appreciated.

  • Mail hanging and seldom retrieving mail, Mail hanging and seldom retrieving mail

When I have Mail running (5.1) all that happens is the circular progress thingy is trying to retrieve Mail constantly when I opened up the the Inbox triangle it is the iCloud mail sync progress circle thats because Mail is set to sync. Is that OK and good for the system or is it best to be switched off?

  • Mail opens, tries to compact messages, then quits.

    Howdy,
One other thing of note is that I'm down to approx 3.6 gig of disk space.
I have gone to home/library/Mail/[email protected] and moved the file INBOX.mbox to the desktop (and put it in a folder labeled "Old INBOX"), and then deleted the file MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded.
Next I restarted Mail. It downloaded 50 messages (showing them in the inbox window) while the little spinner spins and the little message window shows "Reading table of contents"; then "compacting message 554 of 558;" at which point it quits and says that I got a compacting error and that the disk may be full.
Now it worked fine when it had less than 3 gig free. What gives?
Also, I know that I have one folder with a lot of pictures in it. Two problems:
I have no earthly idea where to find the attachements (the Pics) so that I can delete them; and my finder does not help.
I tried to find folders based on size (I really only use this for email, web surfing, and itunes. For that reason, I believe that whatever has eaten the 30 odd gig of disk space must have some relation to one of those apps. So, I searched for Kind=folder and Size is greater than 1000000 kb. I got a bunch of folders alright, but nothing bigger than 500 MB, and none of those sorted by size.
I give up, what gives here? Any suggestions? Many thanks in advance,
    Bart Chambers

(and put it in a folder labeled "Old INBOX")
Where did you put this "Old INBOX" named folder - in
the Earthlink account named folder? If so, there is
no reason to do so. When moving a .mbox file from
within a POP account named folder (with the Mail.app
quit before doing so), a new .mbox file is created
automatically by Mail within the account named folder
when the function is used by the account - in this
    case, a new INBOX.mbox file.
I put it on the desktop, in the (probably futile) expectation that at some point I might be able to reclaim the 800 some-odd messages that were there when the fan got all brown and stinky. I was aware (from reading an older thread on this forum) that a new INBOX.mbox file would be created at the time I started MAIL again.
Next I restarted Mail. It downloaded 50 messages
    (showing them
in the inbox window) while the little spinner spins
    and the little
    message window shows "Reading table of contents";
    then
"compacting message 554 of 558;" at which point it
    quits and says
that I got a compacting error and that the disk may
    be full.
This is obviously not occurring with the new
INBOX.mbox created automatically by Mail within the
account named folder since there aren't 558 messages
    available within this mailbox.
Yep, I mentioned that because it indicates to me that something is not entirely kosher. I have no clue why MAIL thinks that there are 558 messages, or that it is compacting #554.
OK, I have a clue, but that's all. I think that those numbers are stored somewhere in some kind of mox-nix scratch file that should have been cleaned out, but for some reason, did not get cleaned out. How could I flush this?
The only way to remove message attachments with all
Mail.app versions prior to Tiger Mail is from within
the Mail.app and accessing the messages with
    attachments.
Well, that sure is a bit inconvenient, since Mail seems bound and determined to say hello, and immediately Goodbye without even asking, however insincerely, about my mum's health.
What is the overall size of the Mail folder at Home >
    Library > Mail?
If the finder can be believed (the "get info" function anyway), it's 263.4 MB.
The Mail.app alone requires the same amount of free
hard drive space as the overall size of the Mail
folder for general housekeeping duties during use.
Well, that would explain why it continued to work up until space got down to 2 gb, but it would also seem that it ought to work now with 3.3 gb available.
Depending on your hard drive capacity, I would focus
on freeing up more hard drive space.
I would have thought (actually, I did think) that this would be a dandy idea myself. That's why I mentioned my problems using Find (folders =/> 1000000 kb). Even my iTunes folder (home/Music/iTunes/) is only 12.51 gb.
Oh, wait, does iTunes reserve enough (disk) space to equal the actual space consumed?
If push comes to shove, I suppose I could burn a bunch of music CDs and dump the music from iTunes, but that would not be my prefered outcome.
Check this link for information regarding a lack of
adequate free hard drive space with OS X.
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/lackofram.html
And this link for suggestions to free up hard drive
    space.
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/freeingspace.html
I shall do that now, thank you very much for your time and courtesy, I sincerely appreciate the help.

  • Mail hangs when click on message in draft folder

Mail is working ok. However I have a message sitting in my draft folder that when I click on it, it causes Mail to hang completely. I would love to delete it from the folder but I can't even get near it without hanging.
Any clues on how to get rid of this troublesome message and problem?

please ignore this question as I have fixed it.
    sorry guys

  • Mail hangs trying to send attachments

    Hello,
    Intel imac.
Everytime I try and send a message with an attachment it hangs. Normal messages get through ok.
THis applies to a yahoo mail account and a .mac account.
The activity view hangs at a a particular percentgage - often 100% but sometimes 56% and several minutes later I get a messsage telling me to try another server. When I do that that also times out and tells me message cannot be sent at this time.
I've fixed permissions and verified disk
    HELP!
    m

So I have run the app troubleshooter and found no problems.  The Mail App is fully updated, the firewall has no effect on the issue and I am not using a VPN.  I have noticed that using my Outlook account (the default account when using a Microsoft
Live ID to login to Windows) the problem does not occur.  It only happens to the Gmail account that I add.  This would be a doable solution if the emails I send from the outlook account did not have a strange sender tag.  Whenever I send
emails from the Outlook account the emails sender tag is outlook_[bunch of HEX]@outlook.com on behalf of Jack Trobaugh.  weird.
    Any suggestions?

  • Mail Hangs Up at  "Getting Messages" and "Searching for Sender's Image"

When I open mail and view a message, the Activity Viewer window continues to show the "Getting message '<name of message>'" activity next to a frozen striped bar. If I click on another message to view it, I get another activity line in the window "Getting message <etc.>," but this time with a moving striped bar. Below that there's a "Searching for sender's image" activity line and moving striped bar. This is accompanied by a spinning cog next to "loading message" in the Mail viewer window. At this point Mail is stuck. This is a brand new problem as of this morning. I've used mail successfully for quite a while now. Does this sound like an issue with the program, with my mail provider, with a particular email, or something else? Also, I can access email as normal through my ISP's webmail portal.

The console.log displays a list of errors such as the following:
Aug 22 09:07:09 mdimportserver[240]: -[FileProcessor importMetadataFromFileAtPath:] Got exception * -[NSCFString objectAtIndex:]: selector not recognized [self = 0x38c8d0] for path '/Users/Will/Library/Mail/POP-{my email address}/INBOX.mbox/Messages/90942.emlx'
It seems to be processing each message in my inbox in order starting from about 3pm yesterday. I assume that it was doing the same when I first posted yesterday morning.
I have run disk utility and find nothing wrong with my system or hard drive.
    Thanks.

  • Mail hanging

Since updating to Lion, Mail hangs for ever while trying to retrieve messages. I have my iPhone connected to my iMac all the time whilst I am in my study, and I can hear the alert telling me when new mail arrives on my phone but when I go to Mail it won't retrieve new messages until I Quit and relaunch it. (Just the latest in a long line of issues I've had since updating to Lion...)

    with regard to my question:
Mail hangs on start and I have to force quit to get out of it. The question was answered from another person running 10.4 Here was the response:
    will this work for 10.3.9
The Mail.app preference file may have some corruption.
With the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Copy the Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist. Move the com.apple.mail.plist file to the Desktop.
Note: When moving the com.apple.mail.plist file out of the Preferences folder will require re-entering all email account information when re-launching Mail.
The only exception will be a .Mac account which should be re-entered automatically.
Launch Mail and deline any prompt to import mailboxes. As required, after re-entering all email account information the Mail.app should rediscover the existing account named folder(s) and mailboxes at Home > Library > Mail.
If this is successful and after confirming all mailboxes were successfully rediscovered, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder and old com.apple.mail.plist file from the Desktop.

  • Mail crashes when trying to open Message viewer

I just migrated everything over to a brand new macbook air (13-inch) from a macbook pro (late 2010) that was running os x 10.6. Everything seems to work great except Mail will not work -- it initialized fine, retrieved messages etc but when I try to open the message viewer window, it crashes.
I've tried all the quick fixes floating around the web (removing folders from Library/Cache, Library/Containers, Library/Preferences etc), I have reinstalled the OS, and I have tried to remove Library/Mail completely and set up the accounts from scratch. None of this worked.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • Mail won't retrieve messages from my primary Comcast account

Apple Mail, Version 2.1 (752/752.2), downloads emails from my yahoo.com and gmail.com accounts, but it has suddenly stopped downloading emails from my primary Comcast account to my G5 iMac. I get no error messages.
Trying to retrieve email in Apple Mail can sometimes cause the Comcast email server to classify all unread messages as read. If Mail is set to "remove copy from server right away after retrieving a message," then all of my new messages are deleted from the Comcast server before I ever see them, even though they have not been retrieved.
Curiously, the only emails that Mail can access from my primary Comcast account are those that have been automatically forwarded from my secondary Comcast accounts. (Just out of curiosity, I tried manually forwarding a message from my primary account to my primary account; it could not be retrieved by Mail.)
My wife and daughter, on the same hard-wired ethernet LAN, have no problem accessing their primary Comcast email accounts with Mail on their Macs (MacBook and G4 iMac). Our settings for Comcast accounts seem to be identical on all three computers.
Perhaps coincidentally, I also have Comcast Digital Voice VoIP telephone service, and this email problem started while Comcast was troubleshooting problems with my voicemail. I use separate cable modems for phone (Arris TM402P) and Internet (Motorola SB5100).
I've tried: 1) rebuilding all of the mailboxes in my Mail Inbox; 2) deleting all of my emails on the Comcast server and emptying the trash; 3) setting the outgoing SMTP mail server on all of my email accounts to Comcast; 4) repairing permissions and running maintenance scripts; 5) shutting down the computer overnight; 6) Comcast support -- they try, but then give up and say that they don't support Apple Mail.
    I'd appreciate any assistance.
    iMac G5 1.9GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1 GB RAM

This problem was apparently caused by one of two things: 1) trying to use Mail with an AIM.com IMAP account; or 2) corruption somewhere in my Rules and Mailboxes.
I had to rebuild my POP accounts from the ground up. First, I backed up Mail preferences and messages. After quitting Mail and deleting the preference file com.apple.mail.plist and the Mail folder from Users/Home/Library, I launched Mail and created new accounts and new rules.
Prior to this issue, I had been using Apple Mail for three years to retrieve POP mail from Comcast and other accounts. This was my first experience with IMAP.

  • Mail hang during large message download

I've noticed several times when I get emails that either exceed the auto download size threshold, or have large attachments on them that Mail will 'hang' during the download. I can exit out of the message but it's still spinning away and won't get any more email from the server.
I'm using a Pop email account. The only fix I've found is to "magic power cycle" the mail app using the sleep button / home key hold down. Once mail starts after this the message will fully download. It's been happening for a while, but I wanted to be sure it wasn't a fluke.
Anyone else run across this & find an easier workaround?
    Thanks,
    Dave

I have been having no end of problems with email since upgrading to 10.5 about a month ago.
Generally, after some time, various activities hang around in the Activity window (such as "evaluating message n of m") and prevent normal email updates and quitting. Neither Apple support nor the local Apple Genius were able to assist. Even reinstalling the OS (10.5.2, 10.5.3, or 10.5.4) and rebuilding the user account manually did not work. I tried running "Sample Process" in Activity Monitor on Mail.app and noticed a lot of "semaphorewait_signaltrap"s that seemed to be related to AddressBook. This led me to the following process which has (at least for now) fixed my problem:
    1. Quit (or Force Quit) Mail.
    2. In Address Book, use File>Export>Address Book Archive... to dump the contents of the address book.
    3. Quit Address Book
    4. Rename your ~/Library/Application Support/Address Book folder to something else (in case you want to restore it later)
    5. Start Address Book
    6. Use File>Import>Address Book Archive... to restore the contents of the address book
It may be voodoo, but it worked for me.

  • Mail hangs endlessly at last few messages

Suddenly, and for some unknown reason (I can tell by looking at activity viewer), Mail gets to about the last 2 to 12 messages, depending on what I've changed in the mail folder (more below), and then just hangs and spins endlessly. No error message, no beachball, just the little circular motion next to the inbox in Mail.
I have to force quit and I cannot get the last few email messages for love nor money.
    What I know:
    1. It works fine on my other computer at home.
    2. I set up another user account with the same email, and that worked fine. But of course I did not have all the rules, multiple submailboxes, etc. And only had the most recent 250 or so emails. But they all downloaded.
    3. I deleted the most recent emails on the server using plesk (after forwarding to another email address I have). Mail still thinks they are there--again I can tell by looking at activity monitor. The mail that it is hanging on is no longer there on the server. Though it was earlier. It is trying to download a phantom email memory.
    4. I have tried deleting messageUIDsAlreadyDownloaded2, and all this does is cause duplicate messages to pile up in my email. I still get a hang at a particular point.
    5. I have repaired both the disc and permissions. Twice.
    6. I stuck the whole POP-xxxx folder on the desktop. A new one was rebuilt. It did not help.
    7. I removed the envelope index. Mail proceeded to reimport 16,000 or so emails, and it still did not help.
    8. I used the rebuild command on the inbox. It did not help.
    9. I deleted a few emails here and there, thinking I might be at some kind of upper storage limit for Macintosh Mail. That did not help.
I am out of ideas... Help please...
    TIA,
    -Dan

I find it hard to believe that Mail would keep trying to download messages that are no longer on the server...
What does Mail show in Activity Viewer when this happens?
Try disabling the junk filter in Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail and see whether that makes a difference.
Do you have any Mail plug-ins or system utilities that could interfere with Mail? In the Finder, go to each of the following folders (if they exist). What do you see there?
    /Library/StartupItems/
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/
    /Library/LaunchAgents/
    /Library/InputManagers/
    /Library/Mail/Bundles/
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/
    ~/Library/InputManagers/
    ~/Library/Mail/Bundles/
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

    Couple of things to try:
Restart your mac and try launch iPhoto again.
    If that fails:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a file called ‘iPhoto’Lock.data or similar. Drag it to the Desktop. Make no other changes. Start iPhoto. Does that help?
If not: Where is your iPhoto Library stored? If it's on an External Disk, what format is that?

You need a third party app. Take a look at some of these on this Google page.

  • MAIL: Trying to settle long-lasting problem. Mail always immediately downloads the messages I delete from any IMAP mailbox. I'm running out of HD space!

    BACKGROUND
I only have 60GB of space on my MacBook Air. Currently, three long-standing IMAP accounts are taking up over 7GB of it!
I have seen several related discussions about this kind of problem, but they all seem to have been solved or glossed over with setting up the IMAP interaction so that messages are deleted from the server in addition to the device or with a "Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For" fix that doesn't work for me. I like being able to save all of my email history on servers (I'm often surprised by how many years back I have to search to find a piece of information I need), but I can no longer stand losing so much of my very limited local space to really old mail.
    PROBLEM
I'll refer to just one of the relevant accounts as "Gmail," since that's in parentheses when seen in these screenshots. These are its current Mailbox Behaviors settings:
Under my Gmail Inbox in Mail, I have deleted every message from before 2013. The mail from 2013 is all that I want stored on my MacBook Air.
Ultimately, I think this has something to do with the Archive (seen in the sidebar above, as well). Even when I've deleted everything from before 2013 in my Inbox, AND emptied the entire contents of Trash manually, the Archive still contains all of the mail from the server (yes, this account was started in 2011, but I have others that go back much further).
The cherry on top is that when I delete the same messages from the Archive as I've deleted from the Inbox, Mail immediately begins re-downloading all of those messages. Last time I tried this my laptop had to download 23000 messages, but here's a screenshot of proof with a smaller sample:
In case my Gmail server settings are useful to consider, here they are:
    Final Notes
    • There's a lot that I don't know about exactly how IMAP communication occurs between a device and a server. For my sake and the sake of anyone else who needs this kind of help, please clarify terms like "flags" and "archive" (since Gmail and Mail both use the term and I don't know think they mean exactly the same thing) if/when you use them.
    • If anyone does think that there's some sort of "Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For" solution to this, you should know that no matter what I have selected in Mail's sidebar (at no matter what level of indentation), the options available under that menu item are always grayed-out.
    • I want to keep using Mail. There's a lot that I like about it and I don't want to switch to Thunderbird or something else (remember, I need to save as much local space as I can).
    • I just upgraded to 10.9.0 Mavericks, but this problem has existed for me and behaved essentially just like this as long as I can remember. In fact, I think I recall the problem still existing before there was an Archive in the sidebar at all.

    UPDATE
I still have the problem, but when I checked on this post to see if anyone had commented and I simply hadn't received an e-mail, I noticed that all but the last of the images I included have stopped displaying (I had friends check, too).  Most of them were just visual examples of what I was explaining in hopes of giving context and all available info that I may not have personally viewed as relevant, but the first one, about my account's Mailbox Behaviors settings sure is important. These are the settings I have:
    • Store draft messages on the server — Check
    • Store sent messages on the server — Check
    • Delete sent messages — One month old
    • Store junk messages on the server — Check
    • Delete junk messages — One week old
    • Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox — Grayed-out and Check
    • Store deleted messages on the server — Grayed-out and Check
    • Permanently erase deleted messages when — Quitting Mail
I hope this helps. Please comment if I'm leaving out any other important information.
