Mail Header Overlap

When viewing incoming messages in Mail with the "Show Header detail" option set to "None" the hoizontal line that separates the message header overlaps with message body text.

I've gotten unreadable overlaps of text in the headers like:
Mac Mail in OSX 10.8.2 Mountain Lion.
I do not know how to solve it.

  • Can't get rid of account icon photo in mail header area

How can I get rid of the thumbnail photo icon in the mail header area when I send an e-mail in Mail?
It is one of the supplied icons that is in system preferences for "accounts", to distinguish my account from my wife's on our iMac G5 (10.4.10). I recently only selected this icon....the boxer dog....but there was nothing in that area before when I used the generic sillohuete as my account log-in identifier.
    Basically, I don't want to be sending e-mails with a dog's photo....as much as I like dogs.
I have read how to ADD a custom photo in .Mac preferences/profile but, I didn't see how to get rid of one and I did not consciously choose to add the photo that is there now.....it just appeared after I changed it in System Preferences/Accounts. I understand that it might appear in iChat, but, I am not/wasn't using iChat.

Those photos don't actually get sent. They are a "feature" of Mail. You probably have a "Me" card in your address book? Get rid of the picture there, and it should get rid of the picture in the header region of your emails as displayed in Mail.app. But, like I said, those don't actually get sent, anyways. Got Windoze at work? Send an email to yourself at your work email address -- you'll see -- no boxer dog. But, please pay a visit to http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/ and let them know what you think of this feature.

  • HT1277 How do you change the "picture" on your e-mail header?

How do you change the little picture that is on your e-mail header? Pretty basic, but I have no idea.

You can change this in your listing in AddressBook.
Bear in mind that the only person who ever sees it is you - it does not transfer to actual email messages.

How can I copy the date and time in Mail header?
I can copy everything else in the header for pasting in another application.
But not the date and time which is absolutely vital.
    It was ok in 10.6

I suppose you could copy it from the Raw Source. View>Message>Raw Source

Just in case you were not sure, your user account picture is only showing in your header. Only you see it - it's not been sent to the recipients when you send email.

  • Mail rule to modify e-mail header (via external command line tool)

    Hello,
Apple Mail lets me add AppleScripts which will be executed whenever this rule is being called.
I have some command line tools that lets me add some information to the e-mail's header. For example, spamprobe (a anti spam tool, which works perfectly for me) would add an e-mail header like
    X-SpamProbe: SPAM 0.9999749 8aba943058c55bb20bd974fc534b71cc
or clamdscan would add (in combination with the command line tool formail) add information about viruses into the e-mail header, such as
    X-Virus: [clamscan] Heuristics.Phishing.Email.SpoofedDomain FOUND
After marking the e-mails, spam can be easily filtered out. Currently I'm using procmail to call all those external tools. They work much more accurate for me than Apple Mail's built-in spamfilter.
Now, however, I want to keep my mail on an IMAP server, thus, procmail does not work anymore. (procmail works only on local e-mails.) Is there any way to "stamp" incoming mails with Apple Mail by an external command line tool, leaving the mail at the end on the IMAP server? It should be the following workflow:
Apple Mail checks new mails and calls a rule on any e-mail which sends a copy of the mail to an external command line tool
The command line tool adds information to the given e-mail (e.g., virus or spam information)
Apple Mail "replaces" the e-mail on the IMAP server with the altered e-mail
Apple Mail calls another rule which filters all detected spam e-mails
Is Mail + AppleScript that flexible to include the use of external command line tools?
Certainly, an even better alternative would be to have a tool like procmail which could work directly on messages on IMAP servers. However, I'm not aware of any that could do that.
    Thanks for any comment.
    Claus

If you want to execute a command line as a mail rule you could define an apple script that executes the command line,
    for example
    tell application "Finder"
      do shell script "ls"
    end tell
    executes the shell command "ls"
For "ls" substitute your command line command.

  • Stripping out mail header photo

    Hi Folks,
I assume others have run into this problem: MSN Windows Live Hotmail rejects your email, apparently because it considers the little account id photo that Mail inserts on the right side of the mail header as some kind of deadly Trojan Horse vector. Does any bright spark out there know how to strip out that photo in Mail (3.6)? I was hoping to get lucky with "Make Plain Text", but no joy. I've looked through every menu I could find and see no place to change that setting. Thanks in advance!

That little picture isn't sent out with any of your outgoing mail; not in the header, not as an attachment, not by any other method. Apple's mail program just displays it there when you read the messages in your Sent box; it never leaves your computer. So the problem you are having with Hotmail must be because of something else.
You might want to start a new thread here with a more detailed description of what the problem is. Put "Windows Live Hotmail" in the subject line , so users with experience and knowledge about that will be more likely to see it and give you a helpful response.

  • Mail header problems: overlapping sender/subject

    Hi all,
I have this problem with my Mail: when I open a message the header information are on the same line, i.e. sender name and subject text overlap. Labels (From and Subject) are in the right place (one word, one line) but variable content doesn't and the sender email address overlaps the subject.
Very strange, have you ever heard about it? Anyone can help?
    Thank you very much

    Great! Solved!
sstreger you were right: the problem was with fonts.
I controlled my font list and I noticed that Helvetica was missing (the standard Helvetica font file installed with Mac Os X) maybe I disabled it when installing a new Helvetica set a few days ago. Nothing seems related to Arial font.
The solution is: find all your fonts folders (system, library and user/library) and double click on Helvetica packages to activate them (double-clcik opens font book).
Also the red icon of "new message" now is back again.
    Thank you for your suggestion!

  • I am using Mail with OS 10.9.1...I used to be able to drag and drop contact addresses from my address book to an e-mail header.  Now I have to type all the names and can't drag and drop.  Is there a setting for this?  Thanks!

I am using Mail with OS 10.9.1.  I used to be able drag and drop names from my address book into the address header, but can no longer do that.  I now have to type each name in.  Does anyone know if there is a setting for this or is it a feature of the updated software?  Thanks for any info!

Yes, that appears how Mavericks works right now. However, you can open the Address Panel, select all your contacts, then click the To (or CC, or Bcc) buttons to move the selection to the address field.
If it is not already in the Toolbar, right-click on the Toolbar and select Customize Toolbar…
Then, drag the address panel up to wherever you want it.
You may also want to add it to the New Message window in the same way.

  • How to get first Reference from a Mail header?

One of the fields that may appear in an email message header is "References." I need to get the first item (which is a Message ID) in that field. However, when I try the following script for a message that has one or more IDs in References:
    <pre style="font-family: 'Monaco', 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; overflow:auto; color: #222; background: #DDD; padding: 0.2em; font-size: 10px; width:800px">using terms from application "Mail"
on perform mail action with messages theMessages
    repeat with eachMessage in theMessages
set theFirstRef to item 1 of content of header "References" of eachMessage</pre>
I get: "Mail got an error: Can’t make item 1 of content of header \"References\" of message id 17946 of mailbox \"INBOX\" of account \"David\" into type reference."
If I omit "item 1 of", I get the complete References field. So I've tried:
<pre style="font-family: 'Monaco', 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; overflow:auto; color: #222; background: #DDD; padding: 0.2em; font-size: 10px; width:800px"> set theRefs to content of header "References" of eachMessage
set theFirstRef to item 1 of theRefs</pre>
but that only gets me the first character (or subsequent characters if I use a value > 1), which is an open-angle. (BTW, I don't understand why breaking the action into 2 steps like this doesn't produce the same error as the first example.) I've also tried:
<pre style="font-family: 'Monaco', 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; overflow:auto; color: #222; background: #DDD; padding: 0.2em; font-size: 10px; width:800px"> set theRefs to (content of header "References" of eachMessage)
set theFirstRef to word 2 of theRefs</pre>
This skips the first open-angle in the References field and gets me all of the string up to the first delimiter. Unfortunately, the number of delimiters that may appear in a Message ID varies, so I can't simply grab a predetermined set and concatenate them. Furthermore, that would remove the delimiters, so the resulting Message ID in theFirstRef would be incorrect.
I need a syntax that gets me everything between the first set of open- and close-angles but haven't been able to determine what that is.

Thanks to your pointer, I found "text item delimiters" discussed on pp. 39-40 of the AppleScript Language Guide. A typical References field on my system for the last message in a somewhat long thread looks like this:
    <[email protected]> <[email protected]> <[email protected]> <[email protected]> <[email protected]> <[email protected]>
So the message IDs are delimited by spaces and by open- and close-angles. Thus, if I use:
    <pre style="font-family: 'Monaco', 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; overflow:auto; color: #222; background: #DDD; padding: 0.2em; font-size: 10px; width:800px"> set {savedDelims, my text item delimiters} to {my text item delimiters, " "}
    repeat with eachMessage in theMessages
set theRefs to content of header "References" of eachMessage
set theFirstRef to text item 1 of theRefs</pre>
as you suggested, I get "<[email protected]>". That's close to what I want but includes the open and close angles in the returned string. If, however, I specify <pre style="font-family: 'Monaco', 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; overflow:auto; color: #222; background: #DDD; padding: 0.2em; font-size: 10px; width:30px">"<> "</pre> as the delimiters, I get the entire field, i.e., no parsing occurs. I've tried variations and found, for example, that <pre style="font-family: 'Monaco', 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; overflow:auto; color: #222; background: #DDD; padding: 0.2em; font-size: 10px; width:20px">"> "</pre>returns the first string without the close angle, whereas <pre style="font-family: 'Monaco', 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; overflow:auto; color: #222; background: #DDD; padding: 0.2em; font-size: 10px; width:20px">" >"</pre>(i.e., using the opposite order) returns the entire field -- don't understand why the order matters -- but haven't found the magic.
I know < and > are AppleScript operators (what's more, I've had to take special steps to show the quoted strings properly here) and am wondering whether they're a special case. I've tried using backslash, but that didn't help, either.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the info.
The Extra Text is not to be seen now. That’s good. But I have another issue now. The email skips new lines.
If I have a new line in between the two blocks , the email skips the new line.
e.g. If I had to sent the following data:
    "Line1
    Line2"
It appears as "Line1 Line2" in the end. The new line is skippeed.
Appreciate if someone can tell me the reason/solution.
    Regards,
    ParagJ

  • Mac Mail header info gone

How do you put the header info back? Sender, Subject, Attachment save option etc are suddenly missing from incoming email.
The email just displays the letter portion only.

Open up the Mail preferences. Go to the "Viewing" section. There is a dropdown listbox for Header Details. You can set that back to default.

  • What is CM Spam Detection: Spam in mail header?

My friends is using 10.7.3 Mac Mail.
She sends me a a file and I never get it.
Shes sends it again, and I get it.
In her email header, it has  this
    Mime-Version:
    1.0
    X-Mailer:
    Apple Mail (2.1257)
    Content-Type:
    text/plain; charset=us-ascii
    Content-Transfer-Encoding:
    7BIT
    Cm Spam Detection:
    spam
I know she is not spam. She has called her ISP (optonline) and they think its her end.
She is running latest Norton's for Mac and I wondered, is it labelling it on the way out?
Anyone else see this? Thanks... it will help keep her sanity (and mine)!

Her settings are correct per ISP (login, pass, smtp, incoming servers, authentication).
We are puzzled that she has a G5 with 10.4.11 and mail works fine, but the MacPro running 10.7 has same settings...but runs latest nortons.
    ISP confirmed settings (phone support).
Unless another computer in her house was spamming (son or husband's PC) and got listed?
