Mail - how do you add folders simply and how do you change the name of folders - simply.

I'm new to Mac - have OS X 10.9.4 - love the machine.  But . . . as a long time PC user, I'm trying to learn to use Mail, Calendar and Contacts.  Mail and Calendars are so HARD to use when you are used to the power and elegance of Outlook.  Mail is just a downright pain compared to Outlook.  Calendar is really a plain jane.  That said, I love the Mac but could really use information about customizing mail appearance, setting up folders in mail, etc.  Also want to know how to customize calendar.  Where can I get good information.  I'm a fairly sophisticated user - want more than making font sizes different - I need to add some pizzazz.
Thank you

Thank you Barney.  Your info was helpful.  I purchased Outlook for Mac; I use it for Word and for Excel.  I like Keynote better than PP.  The Outlook software version is slightly different for a MAC than for a PC.  It would be fine but there seems to be compatibility issues - at least 2 x's a day I get knocked out of my msn or my outlook accounts and have to sign in again when I use Outlook on the MAC.  That's why I'm trying to switch over to Mail and Calendar.  I do like contacts on the MAC.
I'm used to dressing up my mail and calendar on Outlook.  All mail messages I send are in a customized color, font, etc.  Mac has templates for stationary but they are a little hokey.  I just want a professional look with some color - possibly a simple border.  In Outlook calendar, I am used to a color coding system for various types of appointments (face to face vs. phone, in the office, vs. outside, with staff vs. external folks).  There does not seem to be any way to change the appearance of appointments in MAC - except for work or personal.  That just doesn't meet the use I've been accustomed to.
Thanks for the help!

  • In the Thunderbird Mail Toolbar, can you change the name of an icon? I would like to change "Write" to "Compose".

Couple of months ago I switched from MacMail to Thunderbird. The transition has gone pretty well, but I am less than enamored of T-bird Toolbar button (named Write) that you use to compose a new email. I would prefer it to be named "Compose". So I was just wondering whether there's any easy (or not) way to do that. I have done some searching for an answer to this, but I'm either searching ineffectively or there's nothing around. TIA.

You are welcome. Personally, I'm applying a bunch of patches (other than string changes) for each release, and hacking omni.ja works well for me. It's basically an optimized ZIP file and can be unpacked with many common tools. However, it may break when trying to ''re''pack it. Thus, unpack it completely into some new temporary folder, make any changes there, rename the original omni.ja and zip the folder contents into the new omni.ja (obviously while Thunderbird is down).
A more permanent option might be to create an extension that adds a "clone" of the "Write" button to the main toolbar, which is identical except for having the desired label and a different id (or maybe the same id would just override it?), then you can swap it from the toolbar's customization dialog. This certainly has a learning curve but you would be done with doing this effort once. Someone experienced in add-on writing would need to help you here (which I'm not).
Anyway, plenty of ways to screw things up. ;-)

    Jerry,
Thanks for replying again. I've got a little bit further thanks to you. I tried the US keyboard layout as you seemed pretty definte that it should work. This time I applied the setting and also started the language toolbar and selected it from there.
Hey presto, I've got the @ where it should be. Excellent.
However the single quote ' works in a weird way. When I press it, it doesn't show up on the screen. But when I press another key, I get the single quote plus the next key I press. When I press the single quote twice, I get 2 of them. This is also the same with the SHIFT ' key. i.e. for the double quotes.
Very strange. I'll look at other keyboards and see where that gets me.
    Thanks,  Maz

  • How do you change the name on your computer

How do i change the name of my computer it was my friends now its mine how do i change there name to my name

Here is the information I had found, however I have never had to try. You will have the passowrd too, so the above will help for that.
For Mac OS X v10.5 or later
    Enable the root user.
    Log in as root.
    Navigate to the /Users folder.
Select the Home folder with the short name you want to change, and rename it just like you would rename any folder. Keep in mind that the shortname must be all lowercase, with no spaces, and only contain letters.
Use the Users & Groups pane (Accounts pane in Mac OS X v10.6.8 or earlier) in System Preferences to create a new user with the Account name or Short Name that you used in the previous step.
Click OK when "A folder in the Users folder already has the name 'account name'. Would you like to use that folder as the Home folder for this user account?" appears. Note: This will correct the ownership of all files in the Home folder, and avoid permissions issues with the contents.
Choose Log Out from the Apple menu.
Log in as the newly created user. You should be able to access all of your original files (on the desktop, in Documents, and in the other folders of this Home).
After verifying that your data is as expected, you can delete the original user account via the Users & Groups pane (Accounts pane in Mac OS X v10.6.8 or earlier).
    Disable the root user.
    Hope this helps you

  • How Do You Change The Name Of A Folder?

I have a very simple, almost ashamed to ask, question. How do you change the name of a folder? As always, thanks in advance.

    Howard,
Click (select ) the folder, hit the return key and start typing...
Before you start typing, you can go to the beginning, or the end of the title without deleting the title by using the back/forward arrow keys.

How do you change the name of a folder/file on an expansion drive or external hard drive?

The same way you change it on the internal drive; click on the name and wait a second or two for the field to drop into editing mode, then just type the new name. Or Get Info on the file/folder and change the name there.
    Regards.

Note that some less-than-stellar applications may barf at the change, even though EVERYONE knows the name of a computer is not an authentication mechanism.
On the same vein, if you change the name of the startup volume (aka Macintosh HD) after having put stuff there, even more poorly designed apps may barf.
Just so you know and aren't caught by surprise.
