I would start off by making sure the setting to check automatically is enabled at your desired time interval:
Have Mail check automatically
To set Mail to check for messages automatically, choose Preferences from the Mail menu, then click General in the resulting window. From the "Check for new mail" pop-up menu, choose a desired time interval. You can also choose a sound from the "New messages sound" pop-up menu to alert you that new mail has arrived.
If that all looks correct, then I would continue looking through the following article, which will include more troubleshooting tips:

If you still have the problem after restoring to factory defaults/new iPod you likely have a hardware and an appointment a the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

My itouch mail keeps loading old emails and displaying them as unread. If I delete them, 50 more load....old ones that I have long since read and discarded. Any suggestions. It appears to be only 1 of my email accounts that does this. I have deleted the account and resynced to get it back in use, but 50 old emails come up as if they are new unread ones. I am having the same issue and it started the same day. My other mac does it as well but has been an issue for two years. I just gave up on it and stopped using email from that mac. I just spend 4 days trouble shooting ti myself when i had time and now spent 2 hours with apple on a chat and screen share and they couldnt solve it either.

I tried this, but no luck. I went to Previous System>Users. There is nothing inside the "Users" folder, so I hit a dead end.
I can find my new e-mails -- those that came in since I re-installed the system -- in my NEW system (which I did to see if I was correctly understanding the advice), by going to Users>Home>Library>Mail>POP account name>Inbox.
Let me add a new question: I am running PhotoShop C3. It opens OK, and I can use it, but when it opens I get this message: "One or more files for Adobe Application Support folder are missing. Please re-run the PhotoShop installer."
I don't like re-installing working programs if I can avoid it, because it always seems to lead to other issues. Any idea what files are missing, and where it/they might be in the Previous System folder?

unfortunately that didn't work.
I turn my iPod on by using the bottons on the top and the front, I get the apple logo, the iPod comes on, then goes off (battery FULL)
Had no problems until the upgrade !!!!
So sure it's the software and not the iPod itself.

After reviewing your post, it sounds like you want to delete emails from Mail. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.
iCloud: Reduce email storage space
Delete messages, which moves them to the Trash, by doing any of the following:
Delete a message that’s open: Tap .
Delete a message without opening it: Swipe from the right to left over the message title in the message list, then tap Trash.
Delete multiple messages: While viewing the message list, tap Edit.
To permanently erase all messages in the Trash and free up iCloud storage space, tap Trash in the list of iCloud mailboxes, tap Edit, then tap Delete All.

You can continue to use the current AppleID for iTunes, but your husband can create a new AppleID to use to create a new iCloud account that will be his own and not overlap with yours. If you do not have another email address to use for an AppleID, just get a free Gmail account and use that.
You can have as many AppleIDs as you want (or at least, as many as you have email addresses for). You can use a separate AppleID for the store, another for iCloud, and even another for iMessage if you wish.
You will want to keep the current one as the shared one for the store as all your previous purchases are permanently tied to it, and thus you need that AppleID to update or redownload your current purchased content.

Gmail, Right? Gmail iMap is not listening to AppleMail.
Log in to your Gmail account using your internet browser. Delete all the mail in your Junk/Spam folder online, then empty the deleted items folder.
THEN, check with your iPhone. Or Mac.

Who is email provider? What sort of email account is it - POP3, IMAP or Exchange? POP3 will work like this as with that whoever first downloads the latest mail from the server deletes it from there and so it's unavailable to other mail clients on other devices.
Either switch your email account to IMAP or change your POP3 account's settings so the new mails are not deleted for some time (a week, a month or whatever) after first download and are thus available to other devices also (IMAP is best solution but if POP3 is all that's available from whoever your provider is then you'll have to live with POP's limitations).

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions. To do this, click here and pick a method; if that page doesn't list one for your country or you're unable to call, fill out and submit this form.

You select the printer properties and set the appropriate page size (I think there is a place to set it in PDF Maker too, but not sure). In the printer, this is equivalent to putting the proper paper in the printer.
