Mail icon Bounces but doesn't open

when I try to open my mail the mail icon bounces once in the dock and then nothing happens. I have auto update so i'm running the latest software. I can retrieve my mail from a website but I can't see my contacts or anything. No other application seems to be affected.
Help please!

HI Sonia,
Have you tried repairing permissions?
That is always the first thing I do when something doesn't behave as expected.
Choose HD> applications>Utilities>disk utility. Open it and click on your hard drive icon, then choose repair permissions from the bottom of the panel. I don't usually bother to verify first but someone might disagree with me
Let it run.
I usually go off and have a coffee break or something.
I also take a shot of the finished permissions so that if I have to give anyone information for troubleshooting I have a report of it.
a selective screen shot can be taken by using shift+command[apple key}+4 [all at the same time]
this puts a "pneg picture" on your desktop. I change the name to todays date, keep the pneg extension and file them in a suitably named folder for a month, just to be sure.
Sorry if you knew how to do it. but someone who doesn't might read the post and find it useful.
Hope this helps
If not post back and maybe someone will have another answer.
Warmest wishes and welcome to "discussions" a great community .

  • Safari icon bounces but doesn't open

Almost exactly a year ago, the Safari icon on my doc stopped opening. It bounces once or twice but I can't access Safari at all. The same has happened to the Mac Mail icon and a few others that were on the dock. I recall seeing something that looked like a little expoding cloud and hearing a "bang" and the app either disappeared from the dock completely or it just bounces but won't open. It happens so quickly that sometimes I don't know what I've lost. (Nothing appears in the trash, btw.)I checked the logs and here are just the first several lines of what is a very lengthy list of things in the log.
I hope someone might be able to decipher what went wrong and how to fix it.

  • Mail icon bounces, but never launches. HELP!

Dear People Who Know Macs Better Than Me,
Please help! Yesterday I was trying to back up my Mail (Home/Library/Mail), and when I saw that it was as big as it was, I tried compressing/archiving the Mail folder using the (Create archive of "Mail") when you right-click on any item.
BIG mistake. As I was doing that, my computer froze mid-process and I had to force quit out of Finder. I ended up having to force-restart the computer from holding down the power key (since other force-restart options don't work anymore). I should have never tried to archive by creating an archive, I should have just copied the files directly over to another hard drive, which I did later. My computer froze yet again... choked on a file called "173447.emix or .emlx", did I want to continue copying? I hit yes and then the copy/task window showed no further progress. It would not quit process thereafter, not even if I hit that little X up top, and was instead frozen. I had to force quit out of Finder yet again. Totally digressing, but you know how it is. I'm trying to document everything for you here.
Fortunately I have a backup, but it doesn't have everything from the last two weeks. I did do a manual backup where I dragged all folders inside Mail over from one drive to another.
So, I've been unable to launch Mail. The icon does its perfunctory dance in the dock, the Mail menu appears at the top of the screen, but nothing else appears, and then it goes dormant and never launches. I have watched Activity Monitor during this process and indeed Mail does launch and appears on Activity Monitor, but then it subsequently and almost immediately quits.
What file do you think I damaged? Was it the Mail app itself? Or do you think it was a preference file? Please help! Thanks in advance!

Dear Golden Shoes, thank you very much for that simple fix! After restarting, Finder froze so I restarted with all external hard drives removed and Mail launched this time. Of course none of my passwords or other account settings were saved, but I can easily figure it out. THANK YOU!

  • Installer App bounces but doesn't open.

    Hey guys.
So for my statistics class I have to use this program called JMP. There is a Mac version available from my school so I downloaded it and unzipped it accordingly. I thought I had it downloaded on my Mac, but somehow it disappeared. I was going to do it again and it seemed to be going well. However, when I go into the folder and run the installer app, all the app does is bounce in my dock and when I click on it, it disappears from the dock. I looked through my app folder to see if it was already there and I looked through finder to see if it was anywhere but no luck. Can anyone explain some possible explanations and what to do when this happens? Thanks.

  • With ML icons bounce but don't open

I downloaded ML and when i first boot my iMac it functions properly for a few minutes. Then, when i try and open programs, they just bounce. Many times i see the color wheel and nothing will respond.  I then must "Force Quit" them and reboot. When i Reboot, i get a white screen and must power off wiht the power button on the back of the machine.

    Try booting in Safe mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
If you can work in Safe mode and you can open Safari, you can hopefully start exploring on the net what third-party software installed is associated with crashes on Mountain Lion.

  • Applications bounce but don't open!

    Hi !
I have a problem with my iMac with 10.8.2
After some minutes my iMac is on, when I click on some applications ( not every ) the icon on the dock bounce a lot of times but doesn t open!
same thing with system preferences , Finder ecc
I have to force shut down ( imac will not shout down ).
When I reboot iMac will works properly for some minutes, but then problem start again!
I tried to reset PRAM, to runs scrips, to fix permission, but nothing!
firefox i.e. works fines, Adium works fine ecc...
    pls help me!!!!
    tnks!!!

Have you tried starting in Safe Mode and see if the problem still occurs?
    Restart holding the "shift" key.
(Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first.)
If this works look in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items and delete any third party login items (-), you can always add them back with the (+). Also look in /Library/Startup Items. Nothing is put in that folder by default, so anything in there is yours.

  • Just installed Final Cut Express 4 but doesn't open

Hey I'm a dummy but....Just installed Final Cut Express 4 but doesn't open tells me I don't have the AGP graphics card,my ATI Radeon X1600?Do some imac 1.83 Intel Core Duo come with out it?I'm freek'n stuck!!Any help would be Greatly appreciated!!

Al's suggestion should solve the problem.
However, if you get fed up with hitting the esc key every time you open FCE you could try this permanent cure .......... it's nowhere near as frightening as it sounds and only takes a minute !
For a permanent cure edit the info.plist like this:-
    1. Right click on the FCE icon (in Applications NOT the Dock) and select "Show Package Contents".
    2. Open the "Contents" folder and double click the "info .plist". It should open automatically in TextEdit - if it doesn't, choose TextEdit manually.
    3. Around 15 or so lines down you will see AGP. Delete it and put in PCI.
    4. Close the window and when asked if you want to save the changes, say yes.

You're getting "No such file or directory" errors because you're running a precompiled 32 bit binary on a 64 bit machine without having all the required 32 bit libraries. Try and install every lib32 counter part to the dependencies listed on the AUR page.
I thought it was because of being 64 bit.
I was looking for that dependencies list... where is it?

  • Mail icon bounces out of the blue

    Hi there.
I've noiticed the Mail icon bounces out of the blue in the dock.
I'm working with other programs or browsign the internet and Mail is calling for attention.
I open the progam, it opens properly, I close it after, and it starts to bounce again, driving me crazy.
Any ideas how to make it stop?
    Thanks!

    Reported fixes:
"I ended up repairing Permissions and resetting PRAM and that stopped the problem somehow"
"I would remove the icon from the Dock and drag the application back to the Dock to create a new one. That normally corrects it."
    Other options:
Do a Safe boot then restart normally.
    *  shutdown
    *  start the Mac and *wait* for the startup chime to sound
    *  after the sound, press and hold down the shift key
    *  keep holding and *wait* until the grey  Apple logo appears
    *  now release the shift key and just wait (it could take a few minutes)
    *  eventually the login screen appears with the words SAFE BOOT

  • Database is mounted automaticaly, but doesn't open

    Hello everybody! Please help!!!
I have Oracle 8.1 installed on Win2000. When I restart the PC, the database is mounted automaticaly, but doesn't open. I have to open it manually every time I restart the PC. How can I solve this problem?

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    *What's the plist file?*
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
    If that doesn't help:
    Post the Crash Log.
    It's at Home / Library / Logs / Crash-Reporter / iphoto.crash.log
Double click on the file and it will open in the Console. Copy and Paste it in here.
    Regards
    TD

  • Project launches iMovie HD, but doesn't open

I have an edit on iMovie HD, which for some reason launches iMovie, but doesn't open. Has anyone got any suggestions?

Try deleting the imovie preference file.
    Close Imovie.
Then locate a file named com.apple.imovie.plist and get rid of it. Then empty the trash, run a permissions repair with disk utility and restart. That should do it. The files you need to delete are found in:
    /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.imovie.plist
