Mail icon has grey-d out life preserver over it

I have a grey-d out image over the Mail icon on the toolbar. It looks like a life preserver with an Apple logo in the center. It appeared about the same time my e-mail flat stopped working. Anyone have an idea of what's up or how to correct it?
G4 Notebook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The problem seems to have three parts.
1) Still cannot get or send mail and I get asked for password every time I check for new mail. Even though I put in my known password, it comes back and asks again.
2) I now have to 'force quit' Mail to get out of it completely.
3) The fan on the computer runs almost constantly (may or may not be part of the same issue but it all started at the same time).

Don't recall the exact wording. But it is the same in appearance as others.  Anyway, problem solved using RogerWilmut1 reply to someone else.  I opened Applications and got the icon back.  Thanks for responding.

Try downloading and installing any free app. That usually kicks things back to life.

  • Yahoo Mail Icon has been changed!

    I have a Curve 8330 with OS 4.5.
The  Verizon rep added my Yahoo email account when I purchased it and since then, my homescreen had a Yahoo Icon showing that I got new email. I recently deleted and resent service books as well as did a battery pull (for another issue) and now my Yahoo Icon is gone and instead I have the generic mail icon, with the envelope & globe.
I've read many forums and this seems to happen to a lot of people, but I cannot find a fix.
I've tried numerous battery pulls, deleting and re-adding the account and more.
Can anyone tell me how to get that Yahoo Icon back?  It was so convenient!!
    Thanks,

This is a known issue and I've heard it will be fixed in a coming upgrade. There's nothing you can do for now.

  • Candy Crush icon has greyed out preventing opening of the game

I have been playing the game - Candy Crush Saga - on my iPad2 for the last over 5 months without any problems. Suddenly about 10 days ago the icon which is touched to open the game got greyed out (dimmed) with the words, "Waiting..." below it. Now I am unable to open the game as nothing happens when the icon is touched. The icon cannot be deleted, i. e., the game uninstalled. Trying to reinstall the game from Apple Store is also not possible since the status is shown as "OPEN" not "INSTALL". What has caused the problem and how do I resolve it, please?

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:
You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.
*Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
    *Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
    *Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)
Clear the cache and remove cookies only from websites that cause problems.
    "Clear the Cache":
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
*Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

  • HT2500 My mail icon has disappeared completely.  How do I find it?

I had to do a force close on my email program as it had stalled, and the icon disappeared.  Normally, I can go to preferences and look at "recent" and open it from there, but it's missing from that place, too.  What do I do?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Open Finder, select Applications in the sidebar and see if Mail is here. If it's here, drag the icon to the Dock and open Mail.
If it's not there, insert the Snow Leopard DVD and reinstall Mac OS X. Then, after reinstalling, open  > Software Update to install the most recent version

Can we assume that your toolbar is perhaps an OS X feature?

  • I see a number on the mail icon, but I can't see any mail.

Just got the new iPad. It seems to have synced to the cloud.
The mail icon has an increasing number attached to it, but I can't see any mail.
That number is the number of new messages, right?
    Thanks,
    Ty

    Hi,
Yes, I think so, but it is a new device and operator error could be the culprit.
But if I'm seeing the mail increment after I set it up, it was weird not to see emails in the cue.
Maybe it was a question of timing. It's working now.
    Thanks for your help.
    Ty

  • Yahoo mail icon replaced by generic email icon.

Hello, I have a Blackberry Pearl Flip 8230 by Verizon, and had to delete & resend my service books. Since then, my Yahoo! mail icon has been replaced with a generic Blackberry email icon. Based on suggestions I have seen online, I have tried removing and reinserting the battery, as well as deleting and re-adding the email account in the BIS website. Neither of these worked. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I don't have a specific suggestions to reclaim that Yahoo logo on your mail folder, but I do know many other users have reported this over the past few days.
I'm going to look around and see what others might have found success in.

  • IPhoto won't open, gives me an error message and the icon is greyed out on the dock

My iPhoto icon is greyed out on the dock and wont open. When I click on it it says it may be damaged or incomplete. Went to All Images and the photos are still in there. Went to aplications and the iphoto icon looks normal. Clicked on it and got the following error message. "You can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto. You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Do you want to quit and use the latest version of iPhoto, or do you want to create a new photo library?" There is a quit button with the message, but nothing to allow me to create a new photo library. So neither my wife nor myself have tried to upgrade iphoto. Not sure how it got a newer version. It was working fine a few weeks ago. Anybody have any ideas how to fix or restore the icon and iPhoto without losing pictures?

    Hmm.
Rather than assume the account is "kinda" damaged, I would instead work on the basis that something in the account is damaged, and - as iPhoto is working correctly in the other account - that something is specific to this account.
So: Check on things that are specific to the account:
    The Libraru
    The plist files
    The Cache files
    are obvious approaches.
In the case you describe an awful lot of the time the issue is with the Library. This simple test will tell you if it is:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
If you can make a new Library and get it to work, then the issue has to be with the old library.
    In that case:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
    Regards
    TD
