Mail icon is not the mail icon.... it's gone

I came home today to see my "mail" icon is now a piece of paper, with a ruler, pen and pencil on it. It's looks like another icon but that one is called "configuration". I can't get to mail, it's not in my applications - it's no where. help.
That's my first problem - my second problem is I spent a TON - A TON of money on this computer and I can't get a person to help me out with this???? Really Apple??? with all the money you make???? 50 bucks for a problem that I'm sure you could fix in 10 seconds!?!?! I'm extremely unhappy right now!

First, did you check EF settings to Scan all files, Ignore Case, Files and Folders, Invisible Files and Folders? If you really can't find it, if it's really AWOL, (and I really don't know if, or understand why, the update -- you did run the Security Update, right? -- would have completely nuked it), one possibility would be to apply the 10.6.8 Combo Update, although I have a feeling that won't replace a totally missing application. But could give it a try.

The other thing to do is to reinstall Mail from Optional Installs (I think it's there) from the 10.6 install DVD.
I really don't think it's gone. It has to be somewhere. I don't see the update removing it completely.
If you find it, move it to the proper location, then run the Combo Update and, next, the Security Update again.

  • Desktop Icons are not the correct icons

Here's an image with the issue:
The icons with the orange are supposed to be the hard drive icons. Anyone come across this when internal hard drives now have a different icon?
    Thanks,
    Robert.

"nothing appears on the desktop that is plugged in"
As stated, iPods and iPhones won't appear on your desktop as items.
If by "nothing" you mean that pen drives, or any USB drive doesn't show up, then you could have a duff USB port.
Try a pen drive - if that shows, then all your hardware is OK. If not, check if Disk Utility sees it.  If Disk Utility doesn't see it, then go back to Apple or wherever you bought your MacBook Pro.
You could attach your iPod, then open iTunes and if iTunes sees your iPod, then again, all is OK.
Regarding your 'phone, it would be up to the phone manufacturer to issue software to enable the phone to appear on your desktop as a device. Some produce this for Windows - very few do for Mac.

I know yours is a mytouch but as they're both Android, the feature should  be common to both.

Assuming you have these accounts set up in Mail, open preferences and under Accounts tab, edit the SMTP outgoing server list. Do you have a .mac address in the list? If so, delete it.
    Are you using iCloud?
For the troubled account, select the correct SMTP server for that account in the box and check the box to use only that server with that account.

    Help please

Go to Settings>Mail the account and turn the account off and then back on
Next delete the account from the iPad and reenter the settings.

Thank you, "the-edmeister" -- You render a great service, one that lifts my spirits.
Your answer also taught me to be a little more persistent, as I had started looking at Preferences, and just didn't notice the icons (including Applications) at the top of that window that would have led me to my answer.

  • ThinkVantage Toolbox notification icon NOT the toolbar icon

How can I permanently remove the  ThinkVantage Toolbox icon from my notification area?  It cannot be simply deleted and it's referred to as <no title> next to the icon.
This is not the larger icon that appears under Toolbars.
    Vista.  Toolbox V6
    Thanks, it's just a nuisance.

I have the same issue (Lenovo 3000 N100 Type 0768-A85, Vista Ultimate SP2).  Here's what the icon looks like:
It has no title and it responds to no mouse commands.  It just sits there and I cannot get rid of it.  It's clearly a ThinkVantage Toolbox icon.

  • I want the website icon, not the Firefox icon on my desktop.

When I create a shortcut on my desktop I get the Firefox icon, not the website icon, which is the icon I want for easy and quick identification. How can I EASILY get rid of the Firefox icon and replace it with the website icon?

Please do not dig up old threads about this issue.
You have read that Firefox doesn't do that and that you need to change the icon of the default browser that such a link gets to the website's favicon yourself if you are not satisfied with the default icon. You have to change the icon via the Properties of the shortcut. You can usually save the favicon via the "Firefox/Tools > Page Info > Media" window.

I have no clue that you mean by it only shows photos from the camera icon. It has to show the photos in the camera roll of the photos app since those are the only photos that you can import via the USB cable.
There are other ways of transferring photos to a computer, but they involve using third party apps. There are WiFi transfer apps that will do this. DropBox will also let you upload photos to a public folder and then download them to a computer.

  • My ATT IMAP Mail account will not receive mail unless I rebuild the mailbox.

Hi - I have one ATT IMAP Mail account that does not receive mail promptly, often taking hours or even days to arrive unless I rebuild that particular mailbox. Another IMAP account with a different provider works fine. I have tried to figure out the problem with ATT, but they seem to think the problem is Apple Mail. I know the mail should be arriving because I can see it in in webmail, but it doesn't arrive until immediately after I rebuild. What's up with this and how do I fix it?

AT&T uses Yahoo for mail service, and Yahoo often causes problems with Mail in OS X, so there may not be a good solution. You can try the following.
Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • How do I tell Mail to look in the ~/mail folder on the IMAP server

I run my own IMAP server. If you ask it for a listing of ~/mail, it shows every folder I want Mail to see.
I can't seem to convince it to stop looking in ~.
One important thing: my inbox is NOT in /var/spool/mail/$USERNAME. Everything is procmail filtered. My inbox is ~/mail/inbox.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Okay, that and restarting Mail got it to look in the folder. Thanks.
    Why isn't ~/mail/inbox listed?
The Special Icon labeled Inbox isn't showing the contents of ~/mail/inbox.

  • TS3899 After upgrading to the latest IOS version 7.1, in mail on ipad, if I select more than 5 mail items to delete the  mail software package  crashes and I have to relaunch mail? Anyone else noticed this?

After upgrading to the latest IOS version 7.1, in mail on ipad, if I select more than 5 mail items to delete the  mail software package  crashes and I have to relaunch mail? Anyone else noticed this?

I haven't encountered this problem on my iPad Air but this is what I usually do when Mail misbehaves.
Quit the Mail app like I describe then reset the iPad.
Double click the Home button to show the screen with running and recently used apps. Each app icon will have a sample page above it. Flick up on the page (not the app icon) and the page will fly away and the app icon will disappear. This quits that app. Then reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart.

  • IPhone Mail.app does not sort mails by date

I've just copied about 3000 old mails from a POP3 account to my Gmail account (IMAP). This was done through OS X mail.app, which just works perfect both in the OS X Mail.app and in the Gmail web interface.
The problem is that the Mail.app on my iPhone seems to sort the mails by some kind of mail ID so all the copied mails appears first in the Mail.app. I can't find any way to sort the mails by their date, which I guess will solve the problem.
If there is missing importing information about the problem please let me know so I can supply with more information.

This is a known issue with gmail. I found this in their FAQ:
"Messages uploaded or copied into Gmail using IMAP may display the wrong date in your inbox or other labels."
    See http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=82365&topic=12922
Apparently "The correct dates should appear in conversation view." applies only to web browsers and not the iPhone Mail app.

  • After I upgraded to OS x 10.7.5 my Mail account does not post mail, how come?

After I upgraded to OS x 10.7.5 my Mail account does not post mail, how come?

No. Tried all that. Server finally says they don't understand what's happening so better if I just delete accounts and set them up again from scratch. Haven't done that yet in hopes someone in the Apple world will have found a solution.
