Mail icon will not stay in the Dock

A strange thing has just started happening with the Mail icon on my Dock, ( iMac 24" Intel 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo / OS 10.6.5 ).......It keeps disappearing from the Dock. When I replace it, dragging it from Applications to the Dock as you normally add an icon, it sticks there for about ten seconds, then disappears!
All other icons on the Dock are fine, Mail operates fine too but I have to pull it from the Applications menu every time to open it.
The iMac has been dormant for the past three months while I've been in Europe. I ran Software Update soon after starting the machine up when I returned, and then noticed this odd behavior.
Any ideas anyone? Thanks!.....

The easiest thing would be to create an alias of the mail.app and drag that to the dock. See if that works for you.
If you want to go further, you can drag the com.apple.dock.plist to the desk top. Found in userhomefolder/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
Open terminal in your app>utilities folder
paste the following command:
*killall Dock*
and return.
exit to end the terminal session and quit as normal.
If problem is resolved you can trash the plist file on your desktop.
Repair your Permission for good measure App>Utilities>DiskUtility>repair permissions on (Macintosh HD> first aid)

  • Safari & mail Icons will not stay in the Dock?

Two days ago I noticed that both Safari & Mail icons were not in the dock. I opened applications and returned them, they just vanish, when I open them from apps they both work OK.
I have worked round the problem by using an alias and placing that in the dock. Any way I can get back to were I was?

When you launch the applications and Control-click on their icons in the Dock, do you see "Keep in Dock" or "Remove from Dock" in the contextual menu? If the menu says "Keep in Dock," click on that setting.
Forgive me if you knew this, because I can't tell from your description if this is relevant or not: Normally, application icons will appear in the Dock when the application is running and disappear from the Dock when you quit the application, unless you have set the application icon to stay in the Dock via the above method or by dragging the application file to the Dock. (Dragging the icon out of the Dock will have the reverse effect, the same as choosing "Remove from Dock," and I'm thinking that might be what happened that caused your icons to disappear from the Dock after quitting.) Creating an alias of the application and placing that in the Dock is a workaround, but shouldn't be necessary.
If the above doesn't work, something odd is going on with your Dock indeed. Post back and people will help troubleshoot further.

  • The publishing settings page does not open when I click on the domain name and the iWeb application will not stay on the dock.

    Hello,
I have been trying to help a friend who is having problems publishing her website. (She has done so previously using Mobile me)
There seem to be a couple of things wrong with the application,
1     if I drag the application icon onto the dock, it won't stay there
2     I wanted to change where her site is published to (she has bought a domain name and has a hosting service now) but when I click on the domain name I do not get the "site publishing settings page" so we can't enter the new details.  All that comes up is the main page of her website.
I would suggest uninstalling and re-installing Iweb, to see if that clears the problem, but as Iweb came pre-installed with her Imac, I am not sure that we can do this.
    Any ideas please?
she's using and imac 24 in (approx 4 years old) and running osx 10.5.8

NO - not correct.  Even if you are still using iWeb 08, you can still publish to another host and not MobileMe.  You do this by selecting the option 'Publish to a local folder" and this will publish the site to your desktop and you can then use an ftp programme such as Cyberduck to upload your site to your host.
MobileMe will not be here after the end of June, so you will have to find alternative hosting.  They are not taking any new subscriptions.
On new Macs, iLife 11 is pre-installed, but only iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand are included, not iWeb and iDVD. The Apple Online store is not selling the boxed version of iLife 11 any longer, so if you want to upgrade to iLife, then you'll have to look online at Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk for a boxed set of either iLife 09 or iLife 11.  Both contains iWeb 09, which is what you would want.

  • Mail Icon won't stay in the position in the dock where I put it

I have a very strange happening on my iMac (OSX 10.5.5). The mail icon in my dock won't stay in the position where I put it. After a few seconds, it moves to the last position in the dock (before the dashed line). If my dock is at the bottom of screen, the mail icon moves to right just before the dashed line. If my dock is on the right side of screen, the mail icon moves to the bottom just before the dashed line. Each time I move the mail icon to another position in the dock, it moves back to the last position. Can anyone help me figure this out - so that I can put the mail icon where I want it to appear? Thank you. Dale

first a question for you. are you using Mobileme? I've seen a number of posts with the same problem by people using Mobileme (which i don't have). haven't seen a resolution to this but you might want to check in the mobileme forum. If you are not using mobileme try resetting Dock preferences. delete the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and restart Dock by running the following terminal command
    killall Dock
This will reset your Dock to the default and hopefully fix the issue.

  • HT201335 The airplay icon will not stay in my control bar!

The airplay icon will not stay in my control bar and when activated and turned to mirroring nothing shows up on my tv.  I have airplay on, on my appleTV.  So I am out of ideas and I cannot find anything on here to help. I am using my iPad air and it along with my appleTV are all up to date.  I also just checked my iPhone 5 and it is not in the control bar as well.  I have even restarted the iPad and it will show up just long enough for me to turn it on but nothing shows on the tv and when I go back to the control bar it is gone.  I hope someone can help.

    Hey Thebassbuilder,
Thanks for the question. Based on the information you have provided, it sounds like the issue may reside with your Apple TV or network, since it is reproducible on two devices. To continue troubleshooting, I recommend the following articles:

  • My mail icon will not open

All my icons on my dock are opening without any problem, but my mail icon will not open.

Launch Launchpad. Click Mail icon in the Launchpad to
    open Mail Application.
    Does it open?
If Mail application  launches from Launchpad, drag the old Mail icon in the Dock
upward about two inches, it will vanish in a puff of smoke.
Launch Mail, when Mail icon appears in the Dock, right click it,select  "Options"
    and then "Keep in Dock".

  • OSX Mountain Lion: Running app icons do not appear in the dock

It's almost 2-3 days that I have found when I run an application in OS X Mountain Lion, the application icon does not appear in the dock. In other words, the icons in the dock remain unchanged and no other running application icon appear in the dock. Does anyone else have the same issue?
I appreciate your time to answer my question.

Since you're having issues in multiple accounts I suggest you repair the HD and re-install the OS. ML makes the process pretty painless.
Boot up holding command-r keys into your Recovery Volume.
The screen should give you these choices...
    Restore from TM backup
    Reinstall Mac OS X
    Get help online
    Disk Utility
First choose DIsk Utility and run Repair Disk. If you find errors run it until all errors are fixed or it reports "Disk cannot be repaired".
Then, choose Reinstall OS X. This will be an install in place and won't affect any of your own data.

  • My web browser will not expand past the dock? The dock is always showing.

Any screen I englarge will not expand past the dock. The screen just sits on top of the dock, instead of in front of the dock like it used to. I don't like to enable auto dock hiding either.

To my knowledge and IIRC no window ever went In Front of the Dock. I can go behind it if you drag that window down from the title area but it won't expand from the bottom to in front of or even in back of the Dock. And that is the way it should be. It won't cover the menu bar either.
If you want the app to go farther then set it into Full Screen Mode.

  • System Preferences will not stay on my dock

My System Preferences icons disappeared from my dock. I dragged it back from the applications folder but it disappears when I close the application folder. If I leave the application folder open and then open the system preferences it will stay on the dock until I close the system preferences window. I've repaired permissions, delete the com.apple.dock.plist. Any ideas ?

Drag back the system pref icon to the dock.
Right click and hold the mouse button untill the options window appear and then choose-select
    keep in the dock.
    hope this helps.

  • Apple mail 6.5(1508)Click on mail icon will not open mail in safari

when I try to open my mail in apple mail 6.5 clicking on the mail icon ( that looks like a postage stemp) will result in nothing happens.I can get my mail in Chrome but not in Safari. It has been working until very recently but all of a sudden it just quit.I have tried various things to get it back, but nothing seams to help.Any help I thank for

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application uninstaller. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • ITunes will not play from the Dock?

I upgraded the yesterday to iTunes 7. Since I alway have had this icon in my Dock and click on it from there, I opened the Applications and copied the newly installed iTunes.app to the Desktop. I then dragged it into the Dock. Now I ended up with the icon both on the Desktop and in the Dock. If I moved the Desktop icon to the trash, the Dock icon would not open and gave an error message that the application could not open because it was in the trash. If I then moved the app in the trash back to the desktop, the Dock icon would open iTunes.
How do I get the icon to reside only in the Dock as before upgrading it?
    Thanks

Leave the iTunes icon in Applications. Do not put it on the Desktop. Open your Applications folder & start iTunes. Either R-click or Option-click on iTunes in the Dock. Select Keep in Dock from the contextual menu. Or just drag iTunes icon to the Dock from Applications.

  • Icons not staying on the dock

    HI,
Yesterday, I picked up my phone, took it out of sleep mode and my dock on the bottom of the screen was empty. All of the icons I keep there were on the main app pages. I try to drag the icons back to there but they wont dock to the dock.
Anyone else having this issue or can tell me how to fix it? They all still work, I just have a plain grey dock at the bottom of the screen and can't get the icons to dock on there anymore.

Just today for no apparent reason, when i launch an application from the dock - the icon bounces and disappears.
The name above remains and the space functions as an icon, but no visible icon.
Dragging it out and dragging it in from my apps folder doesn't work - stays the same.
This isn't affecting all icons but is affecting FCP, but not the rest of FCS and has affected Safari, Mail, Firefox and Juicer3.
    Bit annoying really.

  • Dock Icons will not stay in their place (CPU?)

I have been having an issue with random dock icons not staying in their place. I move an icon to a place that makes it arranged correctly in terms of grouping or importance and it "slides" back to it's original place almost immediately. Or I will move one and start arranging and all of a sudden one will slide to the right side or something.
I finally got a chance to troubleshoot this and did a google search.
I have for a very long time had DOCK SYNC TURNED OFF.
Now I have gotten into the MBP and LOGGED OUT of my MobileMe account and it STILL does this. It has been happening since I bought the computer new. I have other issues related to battery life and beachballs and hot computer or hot power charger of loud fan so I put another 4 GIGS in the machine recently so that it now has 8.
Mac phone support says they want to walk me through checking the CPU but I have done this routine like three times on this computer where I set up a User Account and I have done a FRESH INSTALL twice since I bought it. Last week I finally caught a break in the schedule to bring it in and they say the Hardware is fine.
I mean, it is odd but I don't consider this machine to be what I would consider a "pro" line but at the same time I see that this dock thing is happening on my MacPro (albeit while I am still logged into my MobileMe account).
Thoughts or suggestions? I don't want to take the time to bring it in if I don't have to.

yup. bizarre. logged out of MobileMe and I try to move the Keychain Icon from the third on the left to the last on the right and -whoooo-oop - it slides back to the left. no fun. like having a gremlin moving books around in my library or something...

  • E mail messages will not stay in iPhone in box

e mails are received in the iphone inbox but once you access the in box they disappear. They do not go to trash or deleted.
This phone is new. What setting have I missed? I want the e mail stay in the inbox for pre determined amount of time or until I manually delete it.
    GEC

If you are using the Mail.app on your Mac for accessing the account, you cannot change the account type with an existing account. To change the account type for an existing account will require deleting the account and recreating the account.
Although it is possible to access a POP account with more than one email client, a POP account is designed to be accessed with a singe email client only, and trying to access the account as a POP account with one email client and as an IMAP account with another email client is a recipe for problems.
An IMAP account is specifically designed to be accessed with multiple email clients keeping all server stored mailboxes for the account synchronized with the server automatically with each email client used to access the account.

  • IDVD Icon does not appear in the dock and iDVD does not start.

I have been trying to solve the above problem. I have archived and installed OSX upto 10.4.9 and reinstalled iLife 06 and have had no success in getting iDVD to run. All I see in the dock is an icon saying "application".
Would welcome some suggestions - will I have do a total reinstall? Hope not.
    Many thanks.
    Chris Fox[

    Welcome to the forums.
If you go to the Applications folder, what happens if you try to start iDVD directly? Your Quicktime also needs to be updated to be compatible with iLife6 (beware though that you'll lose your Pro capabilities if you're jumping from QT6 to 7).
