Mail icon won't stay in dock

Recently my mail icon removed itself from the dock. It may be a sync issue because it started when I began using my second laptop and trying to use the iCloud/mobile me sync.
My mail wasn't on the dock in #2 when I started it. I went through and tried to make everything equal to machine 1 but some programs are not the same. The next time I started machine 1, all of the dock items were equal to 2 so I reset the dock items on 1. When I went back to 2 they had reverted again.
Now my mail icon won't stay put on 1. It was removed (mysteriously) from the dock. Now when I put it back, it disappears within a few seconds. If I open mail and then click on "keep in dock" and close mail, it disappears, too.
I have reset my sync data to replace mobile me with info from machine 1. No luck.

I seem to have resolved the issue by moving mail from the applications folder to the desktop. Then dragged mail from desktop to the dock. It seems to have stayed in the dock.
I moved mail from the desktop back to the applications folder and all seems fine now.
I am going to leave the "sync dock, sync widgets" options off.

  • Mail icon won't stay on dock

When I closed out my mail program today, the icon disappeared from the dock. If I hover over the spot where the icon is suppose to be, it says Mail. I can click that empty spot and my mail program opens by why won't the icon stay?
I tried going into my applications from Finder and dragged the icon to the dock, but all that did was open the mail program. When the program opens up, an icon will appear.
I tried rebooting but that didn't help.

Sounds like the problem in this thread:

  • Icons won't stay in dock

Some icons won't stay in my dock when I drag them from the applications folder, but others will.
I have tried the following without success:
-gone to library/preferences and deleted com.apple.dock.plist then done a restart
-gone to library/preferences and deleted com.apple.dock.db then done a restart
-gone to library/preferences and deleted com.apple.DiskUtility.plist then done a restart
-used disc utility to repair permissions
-opened an application from the applications folder then whilst the icon is in the dock used right click.options/keep in dock
-deselected dock synchronisation from mobile me sync
None of these measures work though iPhoto & iTunes are not affected by the problem.
The only workaround I have found is to create an alias of an application and drag this to the dock where it does stay put.
    Can anyone suggest anything else?

  • Mail Icon won't stay in the position in the dock where I put it

I have a very strange happening on my iMac (OSX 10.5.5). The mail icon in my dock won't stay in the position where I put it. After a few seconds, it moves to the last position in the dock (before the dashed line). If my dock is at the bottom of screen, the mail icon moves to right just before the dashed line. If my dock is on the right side of screen, the mail icon moves to the bottom just before the dashed line. Each time I move the mail icon to another position in the dock, it moves back to the last position. Can anyone help me figure this out - so that I can put the mail icon where I want it to appear? Thank you. Dale

first a question for you. are you using Mobileme? I've seen a number of posts with the same problem by people using Mobileme (which i don't have). haven't seen a resolution to this but you might want to check in the mobileme forum. If you are not using mobileme try resetting Dock preferences. delete the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and restart Dock by running the following terminal command
    killall Dock
This will reset your Dock to the default and hopefully fix the issue.

  • Mail App won't stay in dock

My Mail app will not reside in the dock.
If I run the app and then check keep in dock it still disappears.
If I drag the app from the applications folder and put it in the dock it will disappear.
If I delete the dock preferences and reboot or kill the dock process and reset my dock completely
    it has no effect.
if I make an alias it will stay in the dock.
Other apps will stay in the dock. this only affects MAIL
this is a 24 inch imac with the latest leopard and latest upgrades as of 09/13/2010
It just started doing this today.
I have turned off all syncing from mobile me. no effect
I have tried re-syncing to mobile me.
I have tried re-syncing FROM mobile me.
I see people have had this problem in the past with no help or answers ..... HELP!!!!

Additionally I get the following error every time I try and add the mail.app to the dock.
Sep 13 22:04:53 Dark-Snow com.apple.syncservices.SyncServer[299]: 2010-09-13 22:04:53.719 DockSyncClient[310:903] Dock Sync Client caught exception: ISyncInvalidArgumentsException: [ISyncConcreteSession clientAcceptedChangesForRecordWithIdentifier:formattedRecord:newRecordIdentifie r:keepAwayFromServer:]: you can't change the record identifier from 0D74D6B9-3A18-4AAE-AC81-3724C2D9ABC3 to /Applications/Mail.app: it is already associated with a different record.
Now what is peculiar to this is that the mobile me sync is not running at this time. I'm not logged into mobile me and have the sync turned off.

  • Safari & mail Icons will not stay in the Dock?

Two days ago I noticed that both Safari & Mail icons were not in the dock. I opened applications and returned them, they just vanish, when I open them from apps they both work OK.
I have worked round the problem by using an alias and placing that in the dock. Any way I can get back to were I was?

When you launch the applications and Control-click on their icons in the Dock, do you see "Keep in Dock" or "Remove from Dock" in the contextual menu? If the menu says "Keep in Dock," click on that setting.
Forgive me if you knew this, because I can't tell from your description if this is relevant or not: Normally, application icons will appear in the Dock when the application is running and disappear from the Dock when you quit the application, unless you have set the application icon to stay in the Dock via the above method or by dragging the application file to the Dock. (Dragging the icon out of the Dock will have the reverse effect, the same as choosing "Remove from Dock," and I'm thinking that might be what happened that caused your icons to disappear from the Dock after quitting.) Creating an alias of the application and placing that in the Dock is a workaround, but shouldn't be necessary.
If the above doesn't work, something odd is going on with your Dock indeed. Post back and people will help troubleshoot further.

  • Mail won't stay in dock

Every since installing Leopard and updating, Mail icon keeps leaving the Dock. I've created new User, done archive and reinstall, varified/repaired permissions, clicked on "leave in dock", etc. and yet every time I close Mail after using it, the Icon just disappears from Dock--thoughts? Thanks!! LT

What happens if you open your Applications folder and drag the Mail icon from there onto the Dock?
If that doesn't help, then the next thing I suggest is to locate the Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist from your Home folder, drag it onto the desktop, and then log out/log in (or enter killall Dock in Terminal). Then customize your Dock to desired. You can throw away the copy on the desktop if you find that the Dock works better this way.

  • My mail icon won't open

my mail icon won't open but the bar goes across and i can't open my mail from there either.  Also when it goes to the top of the screen it won't let exit it and i have to do a hard shutdown.  can someone help.

    With Mail quit....
Go to the User's Library folder. This folder is hidden by default. To unhide: Select the Finder in the Dock. Under Go in the Menu bar > hold down the Option key and you’ll see the Library.
      • Go to Containers.  Drag the com.apple.mail folder to the Desktop
      • Go to Mail folder.
Select the V2 > MailData folder.
Delete any files in MailData with envelope in the name. (should be 3)
      • Go to Preferences. If you find any com.apple.mail.plist files, delete these.
Log out under the Apple in the Menu bar
    Log in
Open Mail. Mail will reindex your files.
Let me know if this helps.

  • Mail icon will not stay in the Dock

A strange thing has just started happening with the Mail icon on my Dock, ( iMac 24" Intel 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo / OS 10.6.5 ).......It keeps disappearing from the Dock. When I replace it, dragging it from Applications to the Dock as you normally add an icon, it sticks there for about ten seconds, then disappears!
All other icons on the Dock are fine, Mail operates fine too but I have to pull it from the Applications menu every time to open it.
The iMac has been dormant for the past three months while I've been in Europe. I ran Software Update soon after starting the machine up when I returned, and then noticed this odd behavior.
    Any ideas anyone? Thanks!.....

The easiest thing would be to create an alias of the mail.app and drag that to the dock. See if that works for you.
If you want to go further, you can drag the com.apple.dock.plist to the desk top. Found in userhomefolder/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
Open terminal in your app>utilities folder
    paste the following command:
    *killall Dock*
    and return.
exit to end the terminal session and quit as normal.
If problem is resolved you can trash the plist file on your desktop.
Repair your Permission for good measure App>Utilities>DiskUtility>repair permissions on (Macintosh HD> first aid)

  • HELP! Mail icon won't go back to default after upgrade!

I used Candybar to customize my icons. I had made PNG files for just about everything. After I upgraded to Snow, my Mail icon now shows as a PNG preview icon, instead of what I made, and won't go back to it's Default (blue eagle icon).
    What I've tried:
    - Mail info, repasting new icon, no go.
    - Candybar, redoing new icon, no go.
    - Mail info, cut preview icon, no go.
Help! Do I have to reinstall Mail or something to get an icon back? Nothing works! Even new PNG or ICO files!
    Thanks!

    I figured it out.

  • IPhone Snyc Problems - Corrupted files, icons won't stay put

My iPhone/iTunes is acting very screwy. I'll try to be brief.
For a while now every time I synced I would get an error saying three particular .mp3 files could not be copied because they were corrupted (although they play fine in iTunes). I would delete and reinstall those files in iTunes and I would still get the error message every sync. At the same time my iPhone hard drive was gradually filling up with content classified as "Other" to the point where I barely had room for a few songs and a movie before the iPhone was full.
So I did a complete wipe-and-reinstall of my iPhone. I thought it would fix things but now whenever I sync the home screen icons are acting goofy. No matter where I put the "Voice Memos" icon, after every sync it re-appears on my home screen. And the Weather icon is completely missing from the home screens, including the extra "overflow" home screens that you can only see in iTunes (although the app still shows up under a Spotlight search so I know its there). Also, now when I sync my music I get three NEW files that iTunes claims are corrupted and can't be synced--although the files play fine in iTunes. (Not the same three files as it was claiming before).
I've wasted a day and a half already trying to get my iPhone and iTunes to play nice. I'm about ready to chuck the iPhone out the window. Any help our suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the tips. Rebooting doesn't work, have tried that.
Restoring the iPhone - ahhh what a lovely process apple have come up with here... Given I'm abroad, web access is transient at best via wifi. And I can't use the data connection with my chosen NZ provider as the phone won't stay unlocked!
Is there a way to restore the phone WITHOUT a web connection? Itunes insists it must download the software - which is a 250MB download on a platform which doesn't support resumable downloads (What is this, 1998!?)
I'm loath to do a hard restore (Turn Off, Hold Home Button down for 10 seconds, incase this breaks the phone even more).
I'll definately be having words with my local apple store when I get back - I've never ever had this much trouble doing something as simple as an unlock before.

  • TS4264 Badge app icons won't stay off

I have five different email accounts set up on my iPhone. I have set the notifications so that only one of them (the one I use for personal emails) has badge apps. That way the email account I use for shopping websites and other non-important emails does not have badges. I get dozens of emails per day from the shopping websites but only a few from my personal email. The personal email is the only badge app I want so I can see on my home screen if I have an "important" email. So I have all the notifications for badge apps turned off for my nonessential emails. However I will turn on my phone and suddenly find a badge app on my "mail" icon that says "445" or something that tells me one or more of the badge apps for my nonessential emails have mysteriously turned themselves back on. I know I'm doing it correctly because it works correctly for a couple of days. Then something happens and all of a sudden I have to fix several of them. How could this be happening? Thank you.

    Also try settings> general> restrictions> allow changes> background app refresh> don't allow changes.

  • Mail Icon won't disappear

My Blackberry Tour has been displaying the mail icon for the past few days, but I have no new mail.  How do I get this to go away?

    Hello,
    You can try this:
    Homescreen > Messages > > Search
Set as follows (may vary depending on your device OS level):
    Search Type: Local
    Name In: Any Address Field
    Subject Message: <leave blank>
    Include Encrypted Messages: Yes
    Service: All Services
    Folder: All Folders
    Show: Unopened Only
    Type: All
That should return to you all unopened messages from all message conduits.
Good luck and let us know!
