Mail- Images color and contrast?

Why is it that Apple forgot color management in the Mail program. I am a photographer and I have my images approved by the client via email. Shoot to CaptureOne Pro then Process raw to tiff open in Photoshop and the color and contrast match convert to Jpeg and attach to email and it looks muddy in the email. Clients respond to me image looks flat what is wrong with it. All my clients use Adobe 1998 color space. I have to tell them to open it in photoshop and they always say "Oh thats better"
Am I missing the option to use Adobe 1998 instead of sRGB in the mail program? Some of my clients use the Jpegs for placement in their layouts so I need to keep the Adobe 1998 color space and not convert it to sRGB just so it will look right in one of a series of programs.

Why is it that Apple forgot color management in the Mail program.
I assume because images are sent as attachments which appear inline or viewed in place within the body of the message by default with the Mail.app which is not the same with all email clients.
If you send such attachments to a recipient using Windows Outlook or Outlook Express, the attachments will appear as attached files only which must be opened separately in order to view.
I don't believe the majority of people that use the Mail.app need it to be used in such a fashion and I don't believe any email client has anywhere near Photoshop's color management capabilities since this is not what an email client is primarily designed for.

• Color and contrast different from Premiere Pro 2 DVD creation

I found after creating DVD's via Premiere Pro 2 are more saturated and more neutral in color vs encoding through Encore.
I made a si8de by side test, converted them back to AVI and grabbed the same still of each. The Encore still was lower in contrast (flatter) and a slight bit warmer. over all the DVD compression from PP2 gives a richer look. If you are a film maker or photographer this matters a lot, but not for most users.
the file sizes from premiere are bigger. for example a 8mbs from a 7:30 avi compression on premiere resulted in 544mb while a 9.4 compression via encore 2 resulted in 464 mb. when changing the mbs from 8-9.4 mbs it resulted in exactly the same size file 464mb. even when starting a new project, which means that there might be a bug and encoding on a unknown predetermined mbs, probably 7. This would explain the flatter look of the Encore 2 compression.
Does anyone know how to find out at what rate a dvd has been encoded after it's done? knowing that there isn't any difference in the file size between 8mbs and 9.4 mbs shows that there must be a problem.
This test was done with the Encore DVD 2 trial version. I have vs 1.51 as well and will make a test on this one as well. to see if there is the same problem.

1. Can you detail your exact method, step-by-step, for both Premiere and Encore?
encode encoded in premiere 2 at the highest level 9mbs (didn't chapter for a simple auto disk, this is disabled in pp2 but you can save as an mpg2 and import for chaptering in Encore2)
2. Did you use the exact same source files for all tests, or just files that were the same duration?
Exactly the same source file, when importing the mpg2 into premiere i simply imported each file in the timelime and saved exactly the frame of each mpg2. All this started when i first compared 2 encodings from a film directors reel where quality is crucial, and saw it immidiatly when playing the 2 different dvd's of the same reel on a DVD player (JVC) and Sony monitor.
3. Be sure to include project settings and program preferences for both applications.
encore 2 encoded at cbr 1x 9mbps (highest)
Premiere 2 encoded at cbr 1x 8mbps (highest)
when setting to 9mbps in PP2 I get the3 following warning:
Total Video and audio bitrate (10.536 Mbs) exceeds maximum allowable bitrate (10.030 Mbps) for DVD type of muxing.
So i reduced the bitrate to 8 and still got a file of 557mb and better color and contrast than Encore2.
The final results of encoding in PP2 gives an identical DVD mpg as far as color and contrast to the original AVI.
When encoding at the max rate of 9 in PP1.5 i never got this warning.
I just repeated the above test on more time in PP2 and Encore DVD 2
they must use a different codec for Encore2 than PP2.
Besides the color and gamma shift the image size horizontally is a slight bit different (larger) than the one done with PP2, but not verically.
you can also encode in PP2 save it as a multiplexed mpg2 file and than chapter it for the final dvd in encore2 which gives you the higher quality results of PP2.

Thanks ssprengel for the suggestions and running a side by side yourself. I went through all my settings and applied your suggestions and did a side by side each time. I even uninstalled the entire creative suite on my system then reinstalled and updated and I still get the same outcome. It was fine yesterday with the previous version of ACR. It seems like the updated version is not showing the image preview in any color space. When I switch the color space in the workflow options the histogram changes but it doesn't seem to affect the preview window. And yes the preview button was checked on it was just when I was using the screen grab tool in windows it took focus away from the application so that is why the settings appear grayed out. I have attached more screen grabs below illustrating all my settings. Also here is some system info if anyone out there has a similar setup and would be willing to test.

• How can I get the color and contrast on photos to appear the same in Organizer and Editor?

In PSE 10 (Windows 7), When I edit photos in the Editor and get them the way I want them, they appear considerably different when I send them back to the Organizer, both in color and contrast. Since I print from the Organizer, they appear in print as they are in the Oganizer, and it's not what I had in the Editor. I set the color the same in both Editor and Organizer from the Edit menu, but I still have the problem. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• How do I lighten up a sequence without loosing color and contrast?

how do I lighten up a sequence without loosing color and contrast?

What have you tired so far? Color correction can be a bit of a challenge until you get comfortable with it.
Also, unless your sequence is one uniform scene, it would probably be better to go on a clip by clip basis to make these adjustments - but here is one quick way to do it for the whole sequence, which may or may not give you the results you are looking for:
Apply an Adjustment Layer that covers the duration of your sequence.
Apply the Fast Color Corrector to the Adjustment Layer.
In the settings for the Fast Color Corrector, bring up the Input Gray level a bit (this will lighten the scene) and raise the Input Black Level (this will help restore some of the contrast). If you need to make the bright portions of the scene brighter, bring down the Input White Level.
Go slowly with small adjustments and adjust to taste. You'll need to work back and forth on those controls to get the best compromise.
If you want more color, increase the Saturation a small amount.

Are my eyes failing more egregiously, am I having another one of my increasingly frequent senior moments, or has Jive been messing with the typographical color and contrast of text in the forums?
For some reason, I'm noticing today a very weak gray text and diminished contrast between text and background?
Monitors regularly and often calibrated with hardware pucks.
I had my eyes checked and new prescription glasses in the last few months, now I wondering what other tests I may need. Or is it really Jive messing with us again?

Your screen grab seems exceptionally clear and contrasty to me, when shown at full-size.
I have personally blocked typekit.com so as to avoid using the Adobe fonts entirely. That seems to have helped me deal with this place better.

• Bad versions also for different color and contrast!!!!! Help

hi,
the master sharper than version is an issue for me also knowing that is due to antialiasing in monitor scaling (I print 200+ sport shoots in 1 hour at the end of ski races after racers seen them on monitor and give me ok for print - and need a fast but good software).
But further to this my AP2 on MBPro show the message "Proofing Profile: Apple RGB" at the bottom of the viewer for each image. If I press P key for Quick preview the message disappear but the master images is much more contrasted, darker, and of a different color (and sharper) but much more good than version!!!??? How can i work on a so bad version and also in full screen mode!
Speed is now good, but if no more good suggestion will arrive Ill'be compelled to swich back immediately to 1.5.6 or try again Adobe LR.

You've turned on on-screen proofing. Go to View>Onscreen Proofing to turn it off.

• Fast image rotation and contrast adaptation

First: I'm new in vision processing.
I'm using LabView 8.0 with the IMAQ Vision development module. The aim is to control the angle and the contrast of a precalculated image (a greyscale wedge) in a fast loop with a framerate of 60 or 100Hz. Currently I use the time-consuming IMAQ rotate and IMAQ BCG functions. All these function works very fine but a litle bit to slow for my application. I have measure: IMAQ rotate with 40ms and IMAQ BCG with 15ms for an image with 1024 x 768 pixels (8-bit greyscale) on a new PC. I know that an arbitrary rotation is a processor intensive task.
Please correct me, but i assume that with IMAQ rotate the image rotation will be carried out in the PC RAM. Afterwards the recalculated image will be written in the grafic memory. In a final step the image will be displayed on the monitor by mean of the grafic processor.
I can imagine there exist a solution or some ideas in the LabView community to use the high end 3D very fast grafic card processor for the rotation and contrast tasks. I hope the approach will accelerate the time of calculation.
Thanks for your help.
Best regards
Ivo Buske

And of course, the rambling about IMAQ image pointers isn't relevant. (Skip all IMAQ.)
You might as well send the image once (each time it changes), and rotate it with opengl.

Hi,
If I understand correctly, you just want a gradient screen to rotate, and to be able to adjust it's contrast.
This can be done a lot easier without an image. If you use OpenGL, you can just draw two triangles with there color set correctly. (You'd be able to make nice rainbow pictures as a bonus.)
An C/C++ application, or dll, could be made in a few hours by someone experienced with opengl and c++. You could even create an opengl window, and control it with LabVIEW. In other opengl applications there are some practical problems, but some might not matter to your application. Biggest problem is getting feedback (mouse clicks, close, move, resize window etc.) from the OpenGL window to LabVIEW.
Opening a opengl window, rotating a few polygons, adjusting color, closing window certainly doable.
Regards,
Wiebe.

Hi Wiebe, I have a fixed image, created before with array functions, that contain a pure linear greyscale gradient (left side: white / right side: black). I used this image to control a "spatial light modulator". This device is connected to the second DVI graphic card output. The main task of the "spatial light modulator" is to shift the local phase of the reflective light. It works as an spatial resolved "adaptive mirror". The local phase shift correspondes directly to the applied grey level of the image. To change the direction in both dimensions of the reflective light I need to rotate this image (= rotate the phase wedge) Thereby the contrast can adjust the absolute angle of reflection. After I had calculated my greyscale gradient image and applied it to the second DVI output, I want only control the contrast and rotation. I think the graphic card function are very fast. But I have to control the graphic card directly per DLL or C-function node. It must be possible because I can tune the contrast and adjust the rotation manually with the nvidea driver in the windows system manager. I'm waiting for a couple of weeks of an answer from nvidea but it seems that contrast and rotation of an 2D-image is not a real problem for these 3-D guys. :-(I hope of an answer or new ideas.Ivo Buske

• Changing color and contrast before capturing analog video?

Is it possible to change color (colorcast / saturation and contrast etcetera) before capturing analog video in Final Cut (software)? I have some old dv tapes I would like to upscale to hd and are considering to upscale via the super vhs outlet / connector on the camera through an I/O box (maybe Matrox).
Do you loose much quality when compared to capturing from DV (digital capture)? I would like to make "a first generation" good capture.....

You would need a capture card and a deck with built in controls, or an external TBC that works with compatible decks. Not every deck allows for this external control.
S-VHS or component out would be lesser quality than straight DV capture via firewire. Via firewire it is lossless...straight digital capture. analog capture is a loss of quality. Capture as DV and then upscale with After Effects or Compressor...or get a DV deck with SDI out and capture with...oh, the Mini doesn't do SDI. You'd need the MXO2 LE for best quality capture. With your options, the best bet would be capture as DV and then use Compressor. Or spring for the Matrox MXO2 LE.
Sorry, good quality costs...

Why not set up a good system to deal with file check-outs instead? We link directly to all of the graphics across the network, but the actual InDesign files that are going to be edited and saved are all edited locally after check-out.
Just my $.02 on the matter...
EDIT: Oops, I see you tried the INX export already! Were these files perhaps pasted directly into InDesign? If so, you can copy them out and save them as graphics and relink to the graphics, but otherwise they are just a part of the file.

• Color and Contrast Change when opening pictures in PhotoshopCS3

I just calibrated my monitor { Mac book 15 inch Pro} using Display Calibrator assistant. I used the Expert mode. I normally had it Calibrated with HUEY PRO. I was not liking my print results with Huey. So I matched the print to the new calibration using Display Calibrator. Now that the pictures match. I go to open one in Photoshop CS3 and the picture darkens, more contrast, and high in Saturation. I can view the picture in photoshop and see it in Bridge at the same time and they are dramatically different. I have all my color spaces set in photoshop the right way using the SRGB for working and that is the format I Shoot in. I have not changed anything except the new monitor calibration. Any one know what could be happening? THanks!!!

• Monitor Changes Colors and Contrast? Anyone know the preferences?

Hello,
There have been a couple of times that the monitor/screen on my IMac G5 using OS 10.3.9 has gone on the blink, becoming high contrast, bright and not usable. I removed the preferences in the Library and put them in a new folder with a new name: Preferences/Old. Then when I rebooted the monitor was back at the normal setting which was great accept I lost my settings for "Mail," actually lost all of my "Sent" mail, lost my preferences for some software programs, etc... Now, I know that the Screen Monitor has certain prefs of its own...plists and if I just removed those and rebooted, I shouldn't loose the other things that I lost. Does Anyone know which preferences are specifically for the Monitor?
Best,
Lucin

I don't know the settings but I'd go to my user library preferences folder, set it to display by date modified, change a setting in the displays preferences, then see which files changed most recently and at the time of the setting change and double check the most likely one.

can any one have any idea how to do it while retaining the quality of image color and resolution
Thanks in advance
Umesh

The JPEG you are reading is a cmyk color space one. They're not common, but they do occasionally pop up in a collection of random jpeg images.
The default JPEGImageReader that comes with the jdk cannot read them. And it will throw an exception - the exact same one you got - stating it can't. JAI's behavior is a little worse. It will read the image without exception, when in fact it to can't read it. It doesn't handle the cmyk aspect right, so you get a messed up image.
The native JPEGImageReader that comes with installing [JAI-ImageIO|https://jai-imageio.dev.java.net/binary-builds.html] can read them. It appropriately decodes the ICC_Profile embedded within the JPEG and you get a cmyk BufferedImage. But if you wish to render this TYPE_CUSTOM BufferedImage, go grab a coffee while you wait for it to slooooowwwllly paint. You'll have to do a ColorConverOp to turn the cmyk BufferedImage into an rgb one (so Java2D can render it fast).
Having done all this you'll find that 1) ColorConvertOp makes the image too bright and 2) The native PNGImageReader that comes with installing JAI-ImageIO has an affinity for returning TYPE_CUSTOM BufferedImages (arggg!!!).
I'll help you fix points (1) and (2) if you get that far. Maybe the best choice is to simply give up on cmyk jpegs. They're only used in printing press environments, and people only use color space aware applications (like Photoshop) to manipulate them in any meaningful way.
