Mail - IMAP and Archiving Questions

From other threads it seems to make the best sense to clean up/archive your IMAP mailboxes by creating local mailboxes ON MY MAC, and then dragging the archive mail into these local boxes which creates room on your IMAP folder and also lets you still see the old mail.
Questions....
I have some old local legacy mailbox that I do not want to delete, but do not need to get to it hardly ever.
Q: I would like to take the legacy mailbox and remove it from my main computer and just put it on a archive hard drive for safe keeping. What is the best way to do this?
Do I simply close Apple Mail and then copy the Legacy mailbox to the archive drive - then open Apple Mail and delete the legacy original mailbox?
Or is there a better way?
Now, when I want to read the mail sometime in the future, how to I get Apple Mail to see it?
Do I have to :
1 - actually reimport the legacy folder mailbox from the backup drive just look at one piece of mail - or can I simply copy the legacy folder the into lib> mail user folder and Apple Mail will just see it?
2 - when I'm done I'd have to delete the import to clear space?
Could it be that easy?
ALSO: if by some chance I wanted to get these local folders to show up in entourage what is the best way to import them in entourage? What about importing the legacy folders into entourage?
In entourage: I used to be able to just move old folders - to archive drives and I'm done. Then If I ever wanted to see them again - just drag an alias to the 'Microsoft User Data' folder and it would be seen instantly right from the arc. drive... Can it work like this with apple mail also?

You can simply select that mailbox, CTRL- or RIGHT-click and select Archive Mailbox from the contextual menu. Save the archive wherever you want. The archive is a .mbox file that is importable into Mail. If you need access to its content you will have to first import it back into Mail.
I see no reason why you couldn't use an alias, but I've never tried it myself.

  • Sent mail - Imap and Pop

    Hi,
Until recently I was using Gmail Pop on Apple Mail for my emails. I am now using Imap and things seem to have gotten a bit more complicated.
I would still like to use Gmail Pop on a different computer as backup system. I just opened the Pop Gmail and noticed that while I was able to download all the messages I had sent through Gmail Webmail, I cannot retrieve the messages I sent from Apple Mail (Gmail Imap) directly. All the messages do appear however on the Gmail webmail sent folder (well, I guess I should say label, since Gmail does not use folders).
(Just for clarification, the Webmail sent messages always showed up in my Inbox so, as it was the case in the past, I have to drag them manually to the sent folder. Might not be the the best solution but I am ok with this).
I have the feeling this might have to do with Gmail labels or something like it. Perhaps there is a way of labelling Gmail Imap sent messages in a way that can be downloaded to the Pop account. I would really like to download to my Mail Pop account all my Gmail sent messages.
    Thanks,
    Pablo

I looked in my user folder and for one important pop account there are two folders:
one has the domain name after the user name and inside that there is a sent messages folder with mbox messages.
However when I was setting the account up it failed and I had to put an IP number in the incomming mail server box to get it online. That account is listed inside my mail folder as well but has no messages.
How do I get them to merge?

  • Ovi Mail IMAP and SMTP servers constantly down

I'm reading my ovi.com emails with a Lumia smartphone and with Outlook. I constantly fail to connect to the IMAP and SMTP server and thereby do not get or cannot send emails. Webmail works fine, but especially sending emails from Outlook or from Lumia is currently impossible. Mails just get stuck to the outbox folder and both Outlook and phone keep asking for the password, as if my password was wrong.
This has happened randomly after the Yahoo transfer, but now it is happening on daily basis. I haven't been able to send emails from my Lumia in a week. The settings both in Outlook and in Lumia are correct, have checked several times. Usually when I leave my phone alone for a night, in the morning it has synced the inbox, but not the Outbox.
    Anyone have similar problems?

Ok.. if you guys have a final configuration please share...
I spent all morning and this after over 30min chat with nokia care support... final answer? they told me to contact Yahoo!
In the meantime, I also contacted nokia through tweeter and they were like: .. but nokiamail has been deactivated! I found it strange because my last income email on my cel was on Aug13... and I can still access nokiamail through webpage (www.nokiamail.com) so it´s not dead.
I´m using my name on the site as ******@ovi.com (cool, right?) but I want to have access to it on my ipad and another cel...thx for any help!

  • Merge Mac/Mail/IMAP and Dell/Outlook/POP

A friend called me with a problem that wads of her email were going missing from Mail.  After spending a while there it turned out that she uses email on 3 platforms
    MacBook Pro, Mavericks, Mail, IMAP
    iPhone 5, IOS7, Mail, IMAP
Her old Dell with Outlook and POP
She is using whichever system is handiest.
Now I know precious little about email but it seems to me that the missing Mail from the Apple platforms is ending up on her Dell because it's got POP.
Q1.  Does that seem about right?  It looks like the missing mail is there from a cursory scan.
Q2.  Assuming that's correct, is there a way to fix this: to get the mail off the Dell and on to her Apple systems?

Having slept on it, I wonder: Could this be solved by
creating an IMAP email account on the Dell alongside the POP one
copying the email subfolders from the POP account to IMAP
allowing this al to percolate via the server to the MacBook and iPhone
    Suggestions?

  • Gmail, Mail.app and Archive Failing

One of my parents' macs fails to properly archive email messages.  Gmail is acting as the backend, and I used the recommended imap settings from Google to set up the account.  The error message is this:
"The IMAP command “UID COPY” (to Archive) failed for the mailbox"

  • Group Mail, Mailman and archives

Im confused. I have a mailman list I want to migrate to Leopard Server. Id like to let the listers have a wiki. Ive set up the group, and the wiki and I see it. (i have other problems with that but ignoring them for the minute)
Will poste to my mailman list be the mail archive?
If so can I migrate my old archive somewhere to make sure the old data is still searchable.
Or, is a mailman list completely separate from a group mailing list.
    Like I said. Im confused.
If this is all explained somewhere please point me. Ive looked for doc and searched - probably not enough.
    thanks

    Hi
"It seems that group mail introduced in previous Snow Leopard Server, it's gone. There is mailman, but I don't need a mailing list , just a simple mail grooup functionality. It's impossible to do in Lion Server?"
Actually Group e-mailing was available in previous versions of the Server. It's not impossible to do in Lion Server either. It's just not obvious if you want to use the interface. There's not much documentation regarding this either.
These two threads (you could have searched this for yourself) should have the information you need:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3518290?start=0&tstart=0
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3229060?start=0&tstart=0
There's also a way of doing this using WorkGroup Manager's Info Tab.
You should get into the habit of using the command line on OS X Server - the Terminal application in /Applications/Utilities - as this is the most effective way for you to get what you want, especially with the Mail Service.
The other Server Administration applications (which you may not be aware of?) are available for free download here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1488
You will need Server Admin to initially configure the Mail Service properly. As ever remember to set up DNS Services correctly as everything you want or may want will depend on it.

  • Yosemite Mail Imap and Gmail

Since upgrading to Yosemite, Mail has been constantly synching with the gmail server - it may stop for a moment but starts right back up. I know this because I have the Activity window open. Consequently there is often a significant lag between clicking Send on a new message and it being sent, or new messages being downloaded.
    I've:
Zapped Pram, repaired permissions, disk is ok, Deleted the account, deleted all the accounts, rebooted, rebuilt mailboxes, everything I've read online in the last 2 weeks.
The only odd message I see in Console is the following and there is one for each folder.
implementation_added_client : failed to add client for path /Users/stoner/Library/Mail/V2/[email protected]/Vendors.mbox/CDW-MacWarehouse.mbox/60263398-70AA-40D0-A33C-4D27997F5A7B/Data
Can anyone offer any advice on what the problem might be and how I might fix it.
    Thanks,
    Mark
    MacBook Air  13-inch Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10)
Mail app constantly synching with iCloud server after upgrade to Mavericks

No solution here, but I have either the same or a similar problem. Apple Mail with Gmail (IMAP) used to work fine with Mavericks.
Now with Yosemite most emails load ok, but some show the spinning wheel and "Loading..." message forever. These messages never load.
I also have Thunderbird and it loads and shows these messages just fine. The messages that don't load in Mail are simple plain text messages so it's unrelated to complex attachments and such.
Clearly something is broken in Yosemite that wasn't broken in Mavericks.

  • Mail, IMAP, and Gmail, yet another conundrum.

This has been well publicized and I have even asked about it before, but got no reply. What is the problem with Mail Notes being duplicated in an enormous volume. Is it just the way IMAP works or is it a Gmail thing or just me being the problem not setting up something correctly? I would love to use notes but Mail repeatedly makes copies in my Gmail folder and in my inbox. I just want one copy in my inbox accessible anywhere(e.g. iPhone) without a ton of copies to deal with. I have tried switching some settings around like the "don't store this thing on the server" setting but nothing works.
    Any input is welcome
    Thanks,
    Alex

This is what the folder structure of my IMAP Gmail looks like in Apple Leopard Mail:
    MAILBOXES
Inbox (Comment: emails come in here)
    Sent
    Trash
IMAP Gmail (Comment: that's the title I gave it)
    [Gmail]
    All Mail
    Drafts
    Sent Mail
    Spam
    Starred
    Trash
    Junk Email
    Sent Items
    Trash
Incoming emails arrive in the Inbox, just under the words MAILBOXES. Unlike yourself, I do not see any emails coming into the [Gmail] folder.
I have never been asked to accept a certificate.
Don't think this helps you, but it does indicate another Gmail IMAP configuration on Leopard Mail that is not having the same problems as you.

  • Apple Mail, iMap and marking messages as read

I am using Gmail's iMap server and Apple Mail on Leopard. When I mark a message as read on Apple Mail it gets marked on the server, but the other way round doesn't work i.e. if I mark a message as read on the server (i.e. running Gmail in a browser) it doesn't appear marked as read on my Mac. Is there something wrong here or is this how it is meant to work (it certainly works properly on my iPhone).

There is something wrong there all right. I am having the same problem.
In my home imac, I leave Mail open when I leave for work. During the day I may access gmail via the web interface, read and/or delete some e-mails, that sort of quite normal things. When I come home, Mail in the iMac has not detected any of the changes.
This used to work with Tiger without any problems, Mail simply saw all the changes as one would expect. Definite regression, and it would be nice to have it fixed somehow...

  • Outgoing mail server and WiFi Questions

DeepPurple23, thank you -- you solved my problem as well!
Can either of you tell me what's involved in choosing a Wi-Fi network? I'm trying to choose one, but don't know whether I'm DHCP, BootP or Static. DHCP is preselected, but then the only lines that allow me to fill in anything are DNS, Search Domains and Client ID. What should I put there? My IPS is earthlink, and I created a client id, but I'm not getting anywhere. Thanks for any help you can give.
Message was edited by: Host - branched to new thread for new issue

    nakoma,
EarthLink should allow you to user their outgoing mail server smtpauth.earthlink.net on port 587 on WiFi or EDGE. Cwmx.com is a work around that only works on EDGE.
As for choosing a WiFi network. Do you have a wireless router such as an Airport Base Station?
If so, you would connect to it, and it connects to your internet connection. Many places offer free WiFi or WiFi that they charge for. This can include restaurants, coffee shops, libraries, and even some cities are experimenting with it. To join one of those networks go to Settings -> WiFi, turn WiFi on, and it will search for WiFi networks that are within range.
Click on the wireless network you want to join. If there is a "lock" next to it that indicates whoever setup that wireless router or base station, and is likely paying for it to connect to the internet set it up to use encryption and a password. You would have to ask them for permission to use their network and the password to use.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • SLT and Archiving Question

We have here an ERP System running on Oracle being replicated to HANA (Side-car) using SLT.
When we archive a lot of data from ERP, SLT is taking a very long time to empty the replication queue.
What is traveling through network? Every record deleted? Every SQL Transaction in Oracle (ERP)? What is the size of data being transfered?

Option -2 skipped the records in my production system , I used the below ABAP code
    FIELD-SYMBOLS : <ls_data> TYPE any,
                                 <lv_operation> TYPE any.
    assign (i_p1) to <ls_data>.
ASSIGN COMPONENT 'IUUC_OPERAT_FLAG' OF STRUCTURE <ls_data> to <lv_operation>.
    If sy-subrc = 0 and <lv_operation> = 'D'.
         SKIP_RECORD.
    ENDIF
Delete records are getting skipped during replication however those records still present in the logging tables , we had to remove those records from logging table manually after the archival process.

  • Ancient and Archived Questions

Is there a way to simply 'drop' a question? I have two questions that are "unresolved" basically because no answer has been forthcoming from the collective so I can't mark them as "answered", but I can't delete them from my list of "unresolved" questions.
Perhaps a third alternative to 'helpful' and 'solved' being 'abandoned'?

    G'day Sue,
Au contraire, you can mark the question as 'Answered' without nominating a Solved or Helpful response and thereby get it off the list of unresolved questions.
I do agree though, the facility to mark a post as 'Abandoned' or something similar would be in keeping with the spirit of points mendicants.
    Have fun!

  • How can I prevent deleted mail from ending up in "All Mail"     and "Archives"?  To my horror, I've emptied these boxes and lost all my mail from all my boxes  (and why do I need to enter this question three times?"

How can I prevent deleted mail from ending up in "All Mail" and "Archives"?
To my horror, I emptied these boxes and lost all my mail from all my boxes .
All mail also disappeared from my iPad, I suppose because they are "synched"
(Also, no offense, but why do I need to enter this question multiple times?)
    Thanks for any thoughts.

I'm having a similar but slightly different problem. My company just migrated to Gmail, and it's saving mail drafts every 30 seconds into my Trash folder.
I unchecked the "Show in IMAP" preference in the Gmail settings, but my Drafts folder completely disappeared. I went back and checked it and the folder reappeared (with my drafts still in there).
I like the idea if starting an email on my laptop and having the option of finishing it on my iPhone or iPad, so only saving Drafts locally would not be ideal.

  • How to archive a message in mail app and delete in imap gmail

I've been searching the forums before asking this but have failed to find the answer.
I'd like to, if possible, use the archive function in my mail app on iMac to archive and store messages locally. At the same time I'd like to delete those messages from the Gmail servers so that my archived messages only sit on my iMac.
I've tried but Gmail creates an [IMAP]/Archive folder with the messages that I've archived on my mac.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks in advance

    Thankyou
Yes, I tried that already and it successfully stores the email locally, "On my Mac", however, the email remains within Gmail's All mail folder and is therefore not removed from Google's servers.
Is it possible to achieve this without having to go into Gmail and separately deleting the mail from All mail?
Would like to avoid the duplication if possible.
    Thanks
