Mail & imap problem

Hi,
I've upgraded from panther to tiger and now Mail on my imap account is very slow. I can't get my mail even if I do multiple synchronise or "get all my mail" !
If I use Thunderbird I have no problem : it gets all my mail quickly.
I remark that on certain imap folder Mail see some mails twice or more (i think Mail is donwloading mail although is already downloaded) !
Is Mail begining unusable ?
thanks.

There are known problems with Mail 2.0 when an IMAP or .Mac account is setup to keep local copies of all messages. The problem can be avoided by changing the settings in Preferences > Accounts > Advanced to reduce the amount of work Mail has to do to keep the local data synchronized with the server.
Set Keep copies of messages for offline viewing to Only messages I've read or, if that doesn't work, to Don't keep copies of any messages. Also, Automatically synchronize changed mailboxes should be disabled.
After making the changes, do Mailbox > Rebuild on any mailboxes that don't display the content properly.

  • OS 10.5.6 Mail IMAP Problem

Hi. I currently use a 3rd-party IMAP mail server to keep my mail synced wherever I go. OS 10.5.6 Mail behaves OK unless it comes to sub-folders.
I have four separate accounts, and dozens of aliases and rules to sort everything into relevant folders. The problem is, these sub-folders often don't refresh and show new messages unless I click on them. Often if I quit mail and re-launch I'll see a lot of messages suddenly appear that were sent hours earlier.
Should I find another mail client? Or is my IMAP provider the culprit?
    Thanks.

I experience the problem of the IMAP sub folders not staying in-sync with the server.
Our company uses Google as our IMAP provider (thru: google.com/a) and occasionally, when I want to look at company-wide mail that comes to a number of accounts (not to me specifically) I find viewing the threads throughthe GMail interface to be much more efficient. When I'm done and return to Mail.app, I usually have to force sync the account to get the folders to reflect their proper counts.
I wish Mail.app could keep better track of these things.
That said, I understand IMAP is a tricky thing and that many email apps have trouble with IMAP. I'm guessing that why there's plenty of competition in browsers, but not email apps.

  • Mail imap problems: Mail created random folders and saves multiple drafts

Hi there, I have a brand new MacBook Pro, and set up Mail to imap my two primary email accounts (new to discussion forum and forums in general):
I have two imap accounts set up: Gmail and Network Solutions (my work webmail). Gmail is working fine.
    Network Solutions imap account:
    - Saves numerous copies of drafts of the same email as I type, and when I try to delete them (select them all, delete, or select all and move to trash), I get a message saying the Network Solutions server on port 143 has timed out. So I have a bunch of drafts that I can't clear.
Mail menu on lefthand side of Mail window looks like:
    Mailboxes
    Inbox icon with dropdown to
    Gmail Inbox icon
    Net Sol Inbox icon
    Drafts icon with dropdown to
    Gmail Drafts icon
Net Sol Drafts icon (this is where all those drafts keep saving and can't be deleted from)
    Sent icon with dropdown to
Gmail Sent icon (only about a dozen sent emails are shown here)
Net Sol Sent icon (only about ten sent emails are shown here)
    Trash icon with dropdown to
Gmail Trash icon (seems to be all my trash)
Net Sol Trash icon (seems to be all my trash)
    REMINDERS
    ON MY MAC
    RSS
    GMAIL drop down to
[Gmail] white folder icon that has the following sub folders:
All Mail (appears to have all mail from gmail in here)
    Drafts
Sent Mail (appears to have all sent mail here)
    Spam
    Starred
    Trash
    NET SOL (drop down triangle)
    Draft folder (empty folder)
locker folder (empty, no idea what this is, did not come from Net Sol)
Sent (does not refresh properly, always missing recent msgs)
    Sent Items (empty folder)
    Trash
The thing is, that in Network Solutions, prior to imapping with Mail, I had these folders:
    Inbox
    Deleted Messages
    Drafts
    Sent
    Trash
NOW, after setting up imap to Mail, new folders have appeared in Network Solutions:
    Folder Name
    INBOX
    Deleted Messages (Bolded)
    Draft
    Drafts
    INBOX
Sent Messages (Bolded) (all recent sent msgs are in here now)
Sent (Bolded) (all sent msgs from Nov 6 and earlier are in here)
    Sent Items
    Trash
If I want to reference an email I sent after Nov 6, I have to log onto my Network Solutions webmail and go to that Sent Messages folder, move them to the Sent folder, then log out and update my Mail, at which point, I can see them on Mail.
I have not made a single folder in Mail -- what's there is a result of me setting up the two imap accounts.
Network Solutions has no idea what that "locker" folder is, it is not a Network Solutions-generated folder, does not appear in my Network Solutions webmail folder list, and I did not make it.
Can anyone help me clean this up, explain these mysterious folders, why I can't delete Net Sol drafts, why I can't get my sent messages that are more recent than Nov 6 into Mail, even though I've been primarily using Mail to send and receive mail for both Gmail and Network Solutions?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!
    -Sunny

Hi. I posted again, and no one has answered either, here is the other post, it's more detailed in scope:
I am having a very strange problem here which started about a week ago, maybe someone can point me in the right direction:
    1) I use both gmail and my domain's server email which load into Mail.app. I use gmail because I like their spam filter and I use their SMTP because where I am, my ISP SMTP server isn't very reliable. Gmail solves my outgoing mail problem, but doesn't support showing when mail has been answered and that is a useful feature.
    2) My procedure is to open up gmail in my browser, mark and delete the spam (IMAP Account), then close the browser and open mail.app
    3) I have a rule in mail.app which moves my gmail to my domain mail Inbox where I organized with folders and subfolders and use many signatures to send different email out to customers. Mail has been very good as you can do quite a lot with it compared to most other email clients for OSX. I do this for three domains, with several email addresses within each domain.
    4) In mail.app, I can choose which mailbox to use for sent mail, junk, etc. This way I am sending from my domain, the email response shows and is linked to that mail so I can look for old responses fast and organize things by department. Spotlight or search works fast and perfectly. It's a good solution which I have used for well over a year (whenever gmail released IMAP services), or was, until a week ago.
Problem 1) As of now, when I open the mail account, the domain subfolders which should be below my Inbox are no longer there. If I look lower to the account folder, sometimes the folders show up there, sometimes they do not show up at all, but they are online in my web-based mail with my hosting company. The mails are not lost, but mail.app is not connecting with the host correctly as they appear and disappear randomly.
Problem 2) Every time I open mail.app now, most of my email inbox folders have to download all of the mail and their attachments again, even though I have the boxes in preferences correctly checked. Once the inbox loads all of the mail, then the subfolders disappear. This is very consistent. As long as there is no mail showing in the inbox, then the subfolders are showing correctly. As soon as the inbox is loaded showing mails, then the subfolders either disappear or move.
Problem 3). The mailboxes that my hosting's webmail service creates (like deleted mail, mail to delete, trash, trash delete, whatever, it's a Windows server) keep showing up in Mail. They never did that before. Once I deleted them, I could see them online, but not in mail. All was as it should be. Now they keep coming back every time I reconnect and I often have to reset which mailbox is being used for junk, sent mail, drafts, etc.
Problem 4). This same problem happens on all three of my machines, two being PPC and one Intel, running 10.4.11 and 10.5.5 respectively. The problem started happening on all my machines at the same time. This is also connection from three different ISPs.
Solution? My hosting company says that they have changed nothing in their settings (IMAP uses Port 143 and I do get a time-out error sometimes but not often). They have tried it in Outlook and do not get the same results, they say it's working fine. I have tried to subscribe in Leopard (you can't do this is Tiger, only in Leopard, but Mail.app says I have no subscribed folders, which is not true). The Quota Limits shows the standard Mail.app mailboxes, the Subscription List shows nothing, and no way to change it).
I tried Thunderbird and it connects faster, downloads faster and the folders are OK, but I still get mail folders appearing randomly. Sometimes I get mail folders appearing that I have not ever created with names like "System Mail". Sometimes I get mail boxes which are stored On My Mac which appear on IMAP suddenly. (Also, Thunderbird has poor signature file support, so I would prefer to use Mail, it's a better program overall.)
I have tried rebuilding the mail accounts, have done this, realistically, 25 times. Yesterday I did a complete reinstall of 10.5.5 just because I am at the end of my rope. Now I am about ready to change hosting companies as I am still having the same trouble. I am in the process of archiving all of my mail into Gmail so I can switch hosts if that is the problem. But, I would like to know first if that is actually the problem, since overall I am pretty happy with my hosting company. They are in Arizona and speak my language and they are easy to talk with. However, they do not have a Mac there so they cannot test my situation from their facility.
It's a strange problem in that one, I have used the system fine for well over a year with perfect results. Two, it happens on three different Mac used in three different places (office, home, and another person's home), and three, I have not changed hosting companies, I have been using the same host for two years and they deny changing any settings on their end.
The hosting company has no answer for me, they are not Mac users, and say that it's perfect in Outlook, but it's not actually perfect in Outlook either as mailboxes still appear randomly and sent mail ends up in my inbox randomly even in Outlook. They just don't realize it as they are not watching my mail boxes except when I am on the phone with them.
I am not having trouble with my websites. I do not have this problem with Gmail, only with my domain webmail.
I have to use Windows because of a particular shopping cart system I use, but IMAP systems should be the same on Windows or anything else. Some how, some where, some one has changed some thing. Any idea what and how to solve the problem?
    Thanks,
    John

  • Mail - IMAP problem accessing inbox

I have an issue accessing my Yahoo Inbox using IMAP with Mail 8.1 on my MacBook Pro running Yosemite 10.10.1.  The Connection Doctor confirms connection and login for both IMAP and SMTP.  When I select Get Account Info at the bottom of the left column in the Inbox pane, the Quota Limits tab shows the number of messages in several mail folders I have on the server, but shows the Inbox with 0 messages, which is not correct.  When I select Get New Mail from the Mailbox tab, the Yahoo mailbox is grayed out.  On one attempt when it was not grayed out, it returned the message "The server returned the error: the attempt to read data from the server imap.mail.yahoo.com failed".
The following solutions found online have been tried without success:
--take account offline then Get All New Mail
--remove and reinstall the Yahoo internet account in System Preferences
--remove the Yahoo internet account, then re-add as an "Other" mail account
--delete com.apple.mail.plist files in the Library, then restore by restarting the program
--delete com.apple.mail folder in the Library, then restore by restarting the program
--reduce password characters to 8, alphanumeric
As a final attempt, I removed Mac OS X from the "Manage apps and website connections" section in my Yahoo account profile.  I removed and restored the Yahoo account in Mail, but this did not restore Mac OS X in my Yahoo account.
IMAP access worked fine until just a few days ago.  Access through Web browser and my iOS devices has fortunately been unaffected.  What broke?

ok, I've been doing some digging in here, and I managed to find out some logs that might help.

  • Mac Mail IMAP Problem: Actually Seems to Be an AOL Problem

For what it is worth, After much futile tweaking, it would appear that what I, and a number of other users thought was a Mac Mail problem, to wit, the need to Offline>OnLine to get mail, may actually be a problem with AOL (and possibly other e-mail services).
Apparently, AOL is manipulating its outbound mail port(s) to limit server demand. I've reached this conclusion after noticing how on weekends and nights, mail seems to work fine with AOL.
    Comments anyone?

  • Mail imap problems

Hi all, I'm experiencing some problems with Mail connecting to an Exchange Server 2003, after installing Snow Leopard. The app run and run trying to "Updating cache directory" and "fetching new mail" (according with "Activity" window).
I tried to see *** is going on opening also the "Connection doctor" window and it seems - for what I can understand - that the IDLE function doesn't work as the app has to read ALL the messages. This morning I have opened Mail at 9:00 and so far now I'm not able to view any new messages that I've got on my iPhone!
Does anyone has the some problems?
    Any idea to workaround that?
Thank you very much for your attention

sorry, no solution here. I've noticed that once finished this long operations, Mail is rather quick to send/receive mail but when you fire it up is really frustrating.
Hope someone can help to solve.

  • Infuriating IMAP problem in Mail - Help!

I have just starting hooking up Mail with our company's IMAP server. I need to do this since I use a desktop and a laptop, both of which need to have exactly the same e-mail on them, including flagged items, sent etc. It seems to work OK except for one thing - Whenever I send a mail, next time I check mail and it syncs with the server, the mail I just sent shows up in bold (unread) in the sent messages folder. I can see why it is doing this - It's because I store my sent messages on the server, along with my incoming mail, so when the sent message is synchronized it thinks it is "new" or unread. I need to sent messages stored on the server as if I don't then it negates the whole point of me using IMAP. Does anyone know a workaround or a way to stop this? If not it's back to POP3 for me and the joy of copying my entire mail folder to my laptop when I go away and back again when I return.......
    Thanks

Thanks for the help. Here's what that folder contains:
    Deleted.imapmbox
    Drafts.imapmbox
    INBOX.imapmbox
    Sent Messages.imapmbox
I've messed with every possible setting on the IMAP account in Mail and also in the options section of our IMAP web interface but to no avail. I've also experimented with the "Use this folder for..." setting as-well, but it's just not doing anything.
The whole point of this was to ensure that when I go away (which I often do) I can just sync the MacBook Pro up with the IMAP server and avoid having to run my sync scripts I made to copy my mail folder etc. over from the desktop. Ironically, it only takes a double click to do that and I spent all of Sunday morning trying to get this stuff sorted then ended up going back to POP3....So much for technology.
There are quite a lot of Apple Mail/IMAP issues similar to this (although not all identical) around the web on forums (here too) and I have seen at least 1 person who had the same issue. I think Entourage handles it better but I'm not willing to use that due to the fact that it doesn't use Apple's address book.
The detail from the console output which someone else posted that had a similar problem seems to indicate some kind of incompatibility with the flags and status info that Mail and the IMAP server exchange. It also appears that different server software companies have different interpretations of the IMAP standard, which causes much finger pointing and gets nothing done. I should say that the issue is identical on the MBP as well as the G5 Desktop.
It looks like I will have to wait until 10.4.7 is released to see if it is fixed. Apple are supposed to be focussing heavily on some unresolved Mail problems in that release so maybe it will fix it, but I'm not holding my breath.

  • Mail 4.x IMAP problem, messages truncated - mising attachments, etc.

I support users that have been having problems with Mac Mail 4.x. A problem we've been having is that for some users, email messages seem to be truncated intermittently. This doesn't happen only with the message body, but in the headers also. This can result in messages/attachments not being displayed correctly since parts of the headers are removed preventing the app from rendering/recognizing them fully (basically, critical parts of the headers are missing). When checking directly on the server (webmail) or via other clients (Outlook, Thunderbird), the messages/headers are fully intact.
Rebuilding the mailbox seems to temporarily resolve the problem, however it comes back within days or even hours.
I have found several threads that sound like they could be related, however I can't say for sure and have found no solutions.

My feeling is that this is a mail.app problem since this affects users that are connecting to both our internal Exchange 2007 environment (SP1 rollup 9) and a hosted Gmail domain.
Does anybody have any thoughts on what may be going on?

I am seeing the same problem. We are currently on Exchange 2003 though we are about to migrate to 2007. I find that rebuilding my inbox usually repairs the messages, but I have't found a permanent fix. Hopefully someone else will (like Apple).

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

  • Yahoo! Mail send problem

Hello all, anyone know when we will see a fix for the Yahoo! Mail sending problem? (This is when the iphone appears to have sent an email by playing the "swoosh" sent mail sound, but the message was not sent, the way users have been getting Yahoo! Mail to send again is by turning their iphone off then back on).
    Cheers

For what it's worth I also had this problem with Yahoo mail on my iPhone. After getting tired of waiting for Yahoo to do something about it, I decided to cancel my Premium Yahoo account and switch to Gmail. I have to tell you Gmail has been amazing and I haven't looked back since. IMAP Gmail on my iPhone has made my email experience a pure joy.
BTW - I had my Yahoo account for over 7 years. And did you know that Yahoo is an acronym for You Always Have Other Options? Well I took them up on their advice since I wasn't too impressed with their service! My 2 cents.

  • Mac Mail - IMAP setup - Large attachments are corrupt

Mac Mail - IMAP setup - Large attachments are corrupt
    Attachments open fine in webmail
    Mailbox rebuild does not help
Appears files over 500k are affected
    Multiple users affected
    Backend is GroupWise 7
So, I see several posts on this topic, with no solutions.... Is this a known issue according to Apple? If so, can some point me to the official release notes/ bug report??

I have the same problem. When I look at the message with Entourage, I found out that while under IMAP the attachment is not fully downloaded from the exchange server. Entourage gives you the choice to download this file. When I select, the file comes down and opens OK. I heard that some clients have a max size download setting for IMAP but Mac Mail does not. Anyone know how to get around this?

  • HT6147 iOS 7.0.6 update - mail sending problems & uncontrollable apps closing

    Hi all!
I’m having problems on two iPads after installing iOS 7.0.6 update. The first one is “sending mails via Exchange account and gmail is a NO GO!” an the second is “closing apps from time to time uncontrollably”. With iOS 7.0.4 this worked fine.
Anyone with same or similar problems? Any suggestions on how to fix this?
I already tried rebooting and deleting/adding accounts again in mail app with no positive effect.
Since iPads are used by company’s managers where seamless emailing is crucial function, this made iPads expensive bricks and nothing more.
The rest of iPads are to stay on the older version till this is fixed or workaround is found.
    Thanks
    Misci

  • Two Apple Mail imap accounts, but can never include 2nd account in REPLY ALL

Hi. I have two Apple Mail imap accounts. One for me and one for my boss. The problem is, if I receive an email in which my boss is cc'd and I then click on REPLY ALL, Mail never includes my boss's email address and I have to manually type it in. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Thank you.

Open Mail>Preferences>Accounts, scan down to the entry 'Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)', click on the dropdown and select Edit SMTP Server List and verify that each account has the correct SMTP server set.
    Then close it
Once you have verified that the servers are set correctly check the box that says 'Use only this server' for each of the accounts.

  • Merge Mac/Mail/IMAP and Dell/Outlook/POP

A friend called me with a problem that wads of her email were going missing from Mail.  After spending a while there it turned out that she uses email on 3 platforms
    MacBook Pro, Mavericks, Mail, IMAP
    iPhone 5, IOS7, Mail, IMAP
Her old Dell with Outlook and POP
She is using whichever system is handiest.
Now I know precious little about email but it seems to me that the missing Mail from the Apple platforms is ending up on her Dell because it's got POP.
Q1.  Does that seem about right?  It looks like the missing mail is there from a cursory scan.
Q2.  Assuming that's correct, is there a way to fix this: to get the mail off the Dell and on to her Apple systems?

Having slept on it, I wonder: Could this be solved by
creating an IMAP email account on the Dell alongside the POP one
copying the email subfolders from the POP account to IMAP
allowing this al to percolate via the server to the MacBook and iPhone
    Suggestions?
