Mail import hanged

I just got my os 10.4.3 this morning.. after install it.. and run Mail.. it said that it need to import mails from before.. then it stopped and the reading was at 5287.. I called Apple and was told that I should update it to 10.4.5 and I should not have any problem if I do it. So I did.. then same thing happened again.
I thought I may just have a bad file somewhere.. I went to the Mail folder looked througth everything I have there.. as far as I can tell.. the last file there is 5286.. there is no more after that..
Does anybody know what this is all mean.. and what Mail is doing and how to go about it?
system: g4 powerbook 15
all mails are pop accounts.. no .mac
Thanks!

  • 10.6.2 Update Mail import hangs

I recently updated to 10.6.2.  When I opened Mail it did the usual "Welcome to Mail... to use the new features in Mail, your existing Mail messages need to be imported into the new version the first time you use Mail."  This is usually no problem, but for some reason, this time around it hangs at Message 2905 and will not continue... I've left it for an hour and it just keeps increasing the time remaining to complete.  I don't know what to do, there is no option to skip message and I cannot use Mail until it completes... canceling just quits Mail and it starts all over when I re-open.  Anyone else had this issue?

I noticed that it said what mailbox it was currently importing at the top.  The Mailbox "2010" was where it obviously had a corrupted message and it hung at the same spot every time. I searched inside the mail folder for it and found the mailbox, deleted it, and it was successful this time around.  Luckily, it was a small mailbox with nothing I necessarily needed in it.  I could have gone thru each message one at a time to find the offending message if I had to, it would be nice if there is a hang Apple would ask if you want to skip importing the offending message.

  • Mail import hangs

I'm importing old mail for Eudora.  Most mailboxes import fine - some even with 8k messages or more.  Some however hang right at 400 messages.  I've had a number of mailboxes that hang at that level - I stop the import, and skip only to find another hang several boxes later.  Attempting to reimport the bad box always fails.
Ideas?  The only way I can see around it right now is to break the mailboxes up by hand but that will be a real hassle.

  • My email import hangs...

somewhere in the last month or so, something changed on my mac.. maybe it was an update from apple, i dunno.  but now every time i start Mac Mail, it hangs... it says it has to import my mail messages... 22,000 or so of them, though i find it a bit hard to believe there are THAT many.. but after about 400 msgs, it just hangs and the "time to complete" counter goes higher and higher (last time i force quit the app when i saw that the projected import time was 96 hours and still rising, while the count of msgs imported had not budged...
very frustrating.  not sure where to go from here.
anyone have this problem?  thoughts on how to fix it?
    thanks

  • Lion email with *.pct attachments causing mail to hang

    Hey all -
Though this was not and still is not an issue for mail under Snow Leopard, it seems that messages that have a *.pct (Macs PICT format for images using Apple Quick Draw apparently) are causing Lion Mail to go off to obilvion - leaving no option but for a force quit.
What's also a pain is that since Lion Mail folds notes together, a conversation that was fine is now corrupted upon the receipt of a note with the blated *.pct file.
Under Snow Leopard on a Mac Book Pro I find no issue opening these messages or even the file itself, let alone saving it or doing most other things that I have tried.   But sending this file to the Lion Email causes a serious issue as soon as I try and open that note on the Lion Mac Pro.
As it is not easy to tell what file types may or may not be attached till you see them, this is sort of like Russion Roulet email.   When the system hangs I have now learned to bring up mail on another system - even an iPad or iPhone seems ok with this - where I can read the note, save the file or otherwise clear the problem.
Because Lion want to be extra friendly and restart from where it was - I have run into the issue where it hangs on a note and then after Force Quitting it immediately leaps back onto the same problematic note - thus the need for some other system to move the note elsewhere or delete it.
Working with different *.pct files doesn't seem to matter - those that I have tried have all caused the Lion mail to hang.  Notes have of course been sent to Apple, but thus far crickets....
Wondering if anyone here has found a solution for this.  I am guessing that *.PCT files are going to be an issue for Preview too under Lion, but actually have not tried that yet.
    Cheers

Hi, as far as I can tell, that log doesn' help, just tells us Mail crashed, and is far too long to really peruse.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Open Mail>highlight the Mailbox it is in, from the Mailbox menu, choode rebuild... any change?

  • MAIL: The upgrade failed - error occurred during upgrade. launching Mail Import assistant  to repair damaged index did not work

After installing Yosemite, the Mail required an upgrade. the upgrade was completed but resulted in a message: The upgrade failed. error occurred during the upgrade, check continue to launch Mail Import Assistant.
This resulted in an instruction: Your mail index has been damaged. To repair it quit mail. Mail will repair index next time you open mail.
Following this instruction resulted in the same failure message being repeated continuously.
How do I proceed to upgrade the Mail app.?

If doing as the alert directs (relaunching Mail) has no effect, see below.
The new version of Mail stores its database in a different format than the old one, so the database has to be converted before Mail can use it. Sometimes the conversion fails because the old database is corrupt. The easy way to recover is to discard the old database and start afresh. You can do that without losing any messages, provided that:
☞ All your incoming mail accounts are on an IMAP or Exchange server
☞ You store sent messages on the server
☞ You don't have any "On My Mac" mailboxes
Most well-known independent mail services such as iCloud and Gmail are based on IMAP. On the other hand, ISP-hosted mail services almost always use POP. If your ISP is one of your mail service providers (or the only one), you probably can't use this procedure. Ask for further instructions in that case.
If you know that the conditions above are satisfied, continue as follows.
Quit Mail if it's running. Back up all data.
Open the Library folder in your home folder by holding down the option key and selecting
              Go ▹ Library
from the Finder menu bar. Inside it is a subfolder named "Mail." Move that folder to the Desktop. You're not moving the Mail application; you're moving a folder named "Mail."
Open the Internet Accounts pane in System Preferences and recreate your mail accounts other than iCloud with the same settings as before. To recreate an iCloud mail account, all you have to do is open the iCloud preference pane and check the box marked Mail.
Launch Mail. If all goes well, your mailboxes should be restored automatically. The messages will be downloaded from the servers, so it may take a long time if you have very large mailboxes. Some people have mailboxes in the gigabyte range, and that may be a problem if your bandwidth usage is metered.
If the mailboxes are created successfully, you can delete the folder you moved to the Desktop. You may have to recreate your Mail rules, signatures, and custom stationery. If it's very important to you not to have to do all that, ask for instructions before deleting the folder.

  • Import hangs when "Do not import duplicates" is selected

I am using iPhoto 6 with a Canon XTi camera. I import pictures directly from the camera via a USB connection. I prefer not to erase photos from the camera's CF card until I need space, as one more way to back up pictures, so when I do an import, I want to select "Do not import duplicates" and to check "apply to all duplicates" to avoid importing the same pictures over and over.
Lately, however, If I select these two options when the first duplicate appears,, the import hangs and nothing happens. After a while I cancel the import and start it again, choosing to import all duplicates. This makes the import work.
Any idea why the import would hang when I choose Do not import duplicates?
    Thanks.

This feature is not great in v6 of iPhoto. It will perform better if you first move the files to a folder on the desktop and then import. You can use Image Capture to move the files.
As to your specific query: try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)

  • Yosemite Mac Mail & Exchange Hanging

    Hi All,
I have a client experiencing the following problem:
His mail continuously hangs while working normally in mail. He is using an Office 365 Exchange account. (This used to work flawlessly in Mavericks)
I notice that it often happens when mail activity says "writing changes to disk"
    I have tried:
Repair Disk and Permissions on Recovery Partition
Uncheck "automatically detect and maintain my account settings"
    Remove and setup Account
Reload fresh copy of Yosemite and setup account (Not restored from a time machine backup)
It takes a really long time to download all his mail again, and I have also noticed that when new mails come in, the body of the email does not show up in the list view for a long time (or until you quit and reopen mail)
    He has :
    MacBook Pro 17" 2011
    8GB RAM
    OSX 10.10.2
I don't know where to go from here, so any thoughts will be appreciated......
    Thanks!

This issue is still ongoing on 10.10.3 and happens on all 3 of his MacBooks - Air, Pro and Pro Retina (which he bought about a week ago)

  • Lightroom 5.7 import hangs up

I have Lightroom 5.7 running on a PC, 8.1 Windows op system.  Lightroom 5 opens and I can get to the library but when I try and import more pictures for a new collection, it hangs up and I get a message: "Adobe Photoshop Lightoom 64 has stopped working. A problem caused teh program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."  I never hear back (of course) from Windows or Microsoft.  Would it help to eliminate all the other collections I have on Lightroom?  It seems to be happening more and more that Import hangs up and won't operate.  It is longer than just the pause while it looks for sources on my several external drives.  Thank you!

    Possibility #1: http://members.lightroomqueen.com/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/1137/188/how-do-i- change-my-monitor-profile-to-check-whether-its-corrupted
Possibility #2: you need to delete your preview cache, this is a folder whose name end with Previews.LRDATA. Do not delete the .LRCAT file in the same folder.

  • Full database import hangs

    System:
    Windows 2000 SP4
    Oracle 8.1.7
    Hi,
I am importing a full backup ( export dump file ). It was taken from the
database having the same structure as the database to which I am importing.
It is taking too long in importing data in a particular table and seems to hang
for hours. It says 40542226 rows imported. It seems to hang from here.
I checked the v$session to identify the session serving the import and
v$session_wait to verify the wait events for that session. But I don't see
any wait events for this session. What I see is the session itself.
    I did the import using:
    imp username/password@sid file'D:\data\fullbkp.dmp' log=D:\log\fullbkpimp.log' full=y
My question is: what are other diagnosis I should perform to help find out the cause and
possibly the solution of this import hang?

    Hi,
In addition, when I want to see what's is going on, I usually execute the SQL below in order to monitory the import operation activity...
    select substr(sql_text,instr(sql_text,'INTO "'),30) table_name,
    rows_processed,
    round((sysdate-to_date(first_load_time,'yyyy-mm-dd hh24:mi:ss'))*24*60,1) minutes,
    trunc(rows_processed/((sysdate-to_date(first_load_time,'yyyy-mm-dd hh24:mi:ss'))*24*60)) rows_per_min
    from sys.v_$sqlarea
    where sql_text like 'INSERT %INTO "%' and
    command_type = 2 and open_versions > 0; Cheers

  • Yosemite mail.app hang

I just upgraded to Yosemite and have found that Mail.app hangs. I would open it and 10 or 15 seconds later it would hang. I would get a spinning beach ball and Mail was listed as not responding in Activity Monitor.
I was able to narrow down the problem to one account. The account works in Thunderbird on the same Mac, so I don't think the account is a problem.
Any ideas how and can trouble shoot this, or otherwise diagnose and fix the problem?

    Hi railmeat,
Sounds like you may be experiencing an issue with your Mail app. I would like to recommend that you use this article as a reference for troubleshooting this issue further:

  • After Yosemite, a new email message causes Mail to hang

After upgrading to Yosemite last evening, opening a "compose new message" window in Mail causes Mail to hang (crash?). I'm able to receive email messages, but  I can only send messages by booting my MacBook Air in "Safe" mode. (Opening Mail in "safe" mode does not keep Mail from crashing when I open a "compose new message" window.)
I haven't been able to get far enough to see if trying to "send" a message will make Mail crash. Just opening a "compose new message" window and trying to put the cursor in the address line, subject line, or message area will cause Mail to spin away into infinity.
I do use three Mail add-ins: MailTags, Mail Act-On and the Daylite Mail Assistant; but all of those are the most current versions and their developers claim that they are compatible with Yosemite.

Welcome to Yosemite beta. I havent been able to use Mail since I "upgraded" 4 days ago. Apparently the solution is to wait until Apple figures out what went wrong.

  • Mail app hangs on ios5 and gmail account

The Mail app hangs several times per day. I have one gmail account. The diag. files says something like "com.apple.mobilemail failed to resume in time" or "Power assertion timeout for MailPendingChanges"

This connectivity issue between my Apple Mail through CLEAR as ISP to Godaddy's pop.secureserver.net is just getting weirder. Now my 9 boxes spin out (when upload is testing at .07 mbps and also at .54 mbps) but partner's 4 emails on iMac using same settings through same network is fine...was glitched a while ago too though. Then partner's emails all do same thing, and hers and my Gmail accounts check fine. SO, Helllloooo Godaddy, if Gmail checks fine but your pop.secureserver.net does not, maybe it IS a problem on your end? Of course, getting Godaddy to ADMIT THEY HAVE A PROBLEM would be a miracle.
Still zero reply or help from either Godaddy or Clear, no resolution from either, still pitching blame at each other.
