Mail in Leopard (10.5.4) stops checking my IMAP e-mail account

I run my own IMAP e-mail server and have Leopard Mail check it every 5 minutes or so. Upon first start-up of Mail it works fine. After a while it stops checking e-mail. I first noticed this when I would hear a new e-mail come in via my iPhone (which is checking the same server in the same way Mail is configured to) but it wouldn't show up in Mail. Pressing the Get Mail button didn't do anything either. The only way I can get it to check mail again is to close Mail (closing Mail when this happens takes a really long time) and to re-launch it. This doesn't happen on Thunderbird on my Windows system so I know it's not the server. This also didn't happen on previous versions of OS X. How can this bug in Mail be reported? Is there anything I can do to fix it?

Hello Jon,
welcome to Apple Discussions. I don't know how to fix this issue. But if you want to report a bug to Apple you have to join the [Apple Developer Connection|http://developer.apple.com> before. To actually write a bug report afterwards go to [this page|https://bugreport.apple.com].

• Mail on my iPad mini has stopped working and show No Mail

My mail app on my iPad mini was working fine up to a few hours ago.  Now my inbox shows the message No Mail And is empty.
i Have tried deleting and re-adding my account with no luck.  Also tried restarting my iPad but again no luck.
Does anyone know how to solve this?
Thanks
Alison

Mine too is having this problem, and they recommended updating to 7.1.
I did what they said and not happened.

• Mail App stopped checking mail

Hi. Mail App stopped checking mail suddenly. I was able to check my mail at 10:15 this morning. Now when i tell it to get mail it does nothing at all. I repaired permissions and reboot and still no luck. Any ideas?

Try locating and deleting these two preference/plist files:
~(yourUserName)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
~(yourUserName)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist

• Mail stops checking for new mail until closed and re-opened

This problem began a month or so ago and is only getting worse by the day.  I have my Mail app set to check for new mail every minute, but recently it randomly stops checking at all and displays the triangle icon next to each Inbox.  I have 10 different email accounts that I use Mail to check and they are a variety of different types from Exchange servers, to IMAP accounts, to POP accounts, iCloud, Outlook.com, Gmail, etc.  Part of the time only 2 or 3 inboxes are affected, while other times (more recently) it’s ALL accounts.  Clicking on Get Mail doesn’t help; no new mail is downloaded.  The only way to get Mail to “wake up” is to close the app and then re-open it.  When I do that, there is a flood of new mail that pours in to each account that had been offline.  There are never any error messages telling me that anything has happened.  I just know that Mail is stuck because of the triangle icon.
Also, there are times when my busiest account mysteriously has no new messages over a few hours, which is very unusual. Closing and re-opening mail will resume downloading mail again to that account.  At least for awhile...
I thought I’d solved the problem by thinking that my router was only working intermittently, so I replaced it with a new Time Capsule.  The problem did not go away.
I’ve talked to Apple Support and they’ve not been any help.  I’d welcome any suggestions.

• IPad won't stop checking mail

iPad won't stop checking for mail - it has been over an hour and still checking.  Also my primary email does not pick up all my mail.

Thanks so much for your reply!
I should have also mentioned that I've deleted the account, did a reset, and even a restore (at apple's suggestion) and nothing has helped.  I just finished reentering all the account info after the restore and it still has the "checking for mail wheel spinning". I have 15 iPads in this office and haven't had an issue with any of them expect this one.
It also has the "Load More Messages..." 29 messages total, 0 unread - at the bottom of the inbox, but it won't let me select it or "load" any more messages.  It does send and receive emails just fine though.  Slow, but fine.
Any other thoughts?!

• Won't stop checking for mail!!! *fixed but not solved*

Hey all, my iPod touch is stuck in a weird way. It's working fine in every aspect except it will not stop "checking for mail". It's been in that mode for about 10 hours now, it isn't' receiving mail, just got the little spinning wheel and saying "checking for mail". I even have the wi-fi turned off!
It appears to be wearing my battering down much faster and I have tried everything I can think of, connected it to my mac, synced content, turned off wi-fi.
Does anyone know of anything else I can do?
Thanks in advance,
Stephen
EDIT: Forget it, tried turning it off and on and that fixed it. Sorry I didn't try that first...
Still have no idea why it happened though...

• Thunderbird has stopped checking for new mail on start up.

After updating to Thunderbird 24.3, the program stopped checking for new mail on start up. I now have to manually click "get Mail" for each email account. I have checked the configuration for each account and check mail on start up is checked.

couple of possibilities here
Shift + F5 will get all mail

• Yahoo Mail not being downloaded,  never stops "Checking for Mail"

Since the first time I synced since the new itunes version and the 1.0.1 update, I have not received any mail populating into my Yahoo account. I tried the restart, shutting off the other email accounts, etc.
I does not push, and when I try the Refresh, it never stops "Checking for Mail".
My gmail works fine.
Anyone have any ideas to correct?

Same here but a little stranger. Two items:
(1) If I go into my Yahoo Drafts, or Sent, or Trash, check mail works fast and I get the "Updated 8/26/07 time" message fine and it's accurate.
If I switch to Yahoo In, the initial footer says "Updated 8/14/07 xxx" and has said that for a week or so. It quickly changes to "Checking for Mail" and then never stops.
Anyone else see the "Checking for Mail" only on the IN box but not the others.
(2) I have been sending test emails to Yahoo (basic account). #1 happens as above (ie no mail seems to arrive). But if I scroll to the bottom of the IN box and click "Load 25 more messages", it does seem to pick up the new messages. "Checking for Mail" is still going strong. This seems to work most of the time.
Anyway. Not sure it this may help anyone figure this out.
[I have tried the approaches suggested here such as deleting Yahoo, turning off other emails, resetting network, changing IMAP inbox location, etc]

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.
Thank you.

• Stop Checking Mail Account

I recently had to stop using one of my email addresses -- and so I want Mail to stop  checking that account.
But I don't want to lose the existing emails. I'd like them to continue to show up in my In Box and Sent Mail folders.
Does anybody know if this is possible? If I disable the account, the existing mail disappears. If I deselect "Include when automatically checking for new mail," mail is still checked when I hit "Get Mail" -- and I still get an error icon next to the In Box folder.
Anybody have any suggestions? Do I have to move all the mail to another "on my mac" folder?
Thanks for any light anybody can shed --
Steve

Thanks -- good idea.
But I'm still seeing the little error icon (triangle with exclamation mark in it) next to the In Box. If I click it,  the account goes back online. But the error never goes away. This means that I can never tell when I really have a connection error -- because the error condition is always present.
Any idea?
Thanks again,
Steve

• Mail won't stop checking some accounts

Anyone have this happen before? Mail won't stop checking a couple accounts I have. They are accounts we use every single day, run off our own server. They will check fine on other macs, but not this iMac starting a few hours ago. I have rebuilt the boxes, deleted all mail from the servers and updated to 10.5.4 just in case. Still the same thing.
I have to force quit, then once restarted it will grab new e-mails before it craps out and just sits there spinning on accounts again.
Ideas? Thx.

I'm experiencing the same issue with one of my POP accounts as well.
I've tried the "Rebuild" command in the Mailbox menu as well as rebuilding the Apple Mail Envelope Index, but it's still attempting to sync.
Has anyone found a resolution to this issue?

• Cannot receive mail using leopard

Recently my parents mac mini which is runing Leopard stopped receiving mail addressed to there @mac.com account. I have tried deleting the account then adding it back again to no avail.  I can log into their iCloud account no ptoblem using same credentials.  I do get a reoccuring pop up telling me that the address is not correct, but I can use the password for icloud, an i did check that the password I use for their icloud account i sthe same I use to try to set up their mail account.

Hi Scott, yes, everything has changed.
Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
MAKE A NEW ACCOUNT - DO NOT TRY TO ALTER YOUR EXISTING ACCOUNT.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
• Server name: imap.mail.me.com
• SSL Required: Yes
• Port: 993
• Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
• Password: Your iCloud password
SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
• Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
• SSL Required: Yes
• Port: 587
• SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
• Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
• Password: Your iCloud password
Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria:  8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers.  If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message.  Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.

• 8830 Stops checking email until a battery pull

Hello:
I'm pretty new to BB's, the 8830 being my first one. My problem is that I have it set up to check a pop account but it seems that I need to pull the battery almost daily because it stops checking for new messages.  I've tried turning it off/on every which way and checked all the email settings, but it seems like once it loses it's connection, it won't try to check mail again until I've pulled the battery.  But, I'm afraid pulling the battery out every morning is going to wear it out (and me).  Are there any other options or commands I can run to tell my 8830 to check my pop account?  Thanks!

• Problem with Mail in Leopard

After installing Leopard (Not Upgrade) and sync all my information back from .MAC. My Mail seems to has some problem. There are no emails listed when I click on Inbox or Junk but when I click directly to the mailboxes all email appeared.
I have 6 to 7 mailboxes that means I will need to click one by one to check email!!!
Anyone has similar problem? Thanks in advance

Are these 6-7 mailboxes on "On My Mac" or in your "Inbox"? My second question... The data you re-synced from .mac, was that from previously synced from Tiger? If so, your mail settings are probably as bad as they would have been if you clicked "Upgrade" on the Leopard install. If this is the case you should delete you mail settings (~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist) and re-enter them. If doing so I will also note that Gmail now supports IMAP (http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=77663&topic=12761).

• Mail fails at check via IMAP after latest security update?

I check my work email via IMAP, and have not recently changed any settings.  Between Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon, Mail (v.4.5) suddenly became unable to pick up new mail.  It just spins its little "checking" wheel icon endlessly when I launch the program.
The only thing that is different is that I went ahead and accepted the lastest Snow Leopard security update.
I can send mail (which goes through my ISP's SMTP server) fine.  Just can't pick up.
I've talk to IT at work and they did everything they could on their end but could not diagnose any problem.  They confirmed that other users are picking up mail fine via IMAP.  We changed my password, swapped my username for my email address and back again (both should work), and relaunched Mail numerous times to no avail.  I can see that I have new messages via work's webmail interface and have sent myself test messages from my Gmail account.  Nada.
Since Mail doesn't really return error messages, work IT was unable to go any further with helping me.  I can't get in at the local Genius bar until tomorrow afternoon.  Any ideas?

The Backup likely would only help if it were a full Backup of the OS.
