Mail in Mavericks : problem saving attachments

Hi,
When I save an attachment in Mail (Mavericks) it works.
But when there is already a file with this name on the disk, Mail asks if I want to replace the file (fine so far).
If I click yes, the file is not overwritten !?
Do you also experience this ?
Is it a bug ?
Thanks for your feedback

It is definitely unacceptable

  • Problem saving attachments with longish filenames

We're having a problem saving attachments from Mail that are 25+ characters in length. ie. If we click on the "Save" attachment button in Mail, we get an alert that the file can't be saved because it's too long. We can drag the file to the desktop, but then can't move it without getting the "name is too long" alert. We have to change the name, deleting a bunch of characters. Using HFS+. Anyone have a solution?

When you drag the attachment to the desktop you should be able to click on the file's name then edit it so it's less then 25 characters. Try saving it again after deleting some characters.
We just switched from OS 9.4 to OS 10.4 (Intel) and found that Photoshop did not recognize any of the pics in our folders because we haven't been saving them with the file extension (i.e. jpeg, eps, etc.) We had to open all our pic files then add the extension. Apparently our old Macs could recognize a photo file but our new ones need the extension to be able to read the file. So if your file name is too long it's probably cutting off the extension - your computer won't let you save it until you make room for the file extension at the end.
    Hope this helps.

  • Mail will not 'replace' saved attachments it makes numbered copies

    Hi,
Ok this has me baffled. Prior to Mavericks I could right-click an attachment and I could save and replace the existing file.
Now it just saves the file with a number after the file name.
I play a game by email and I need to overwrite the file which saves time. Now I can save but have to go to the folder delete the old version
of the file and rename the newly saved file to play the game. I have tried holding the ctrl, option, and command to force the overwrite,
but I have not found the correct combination if there is one. Any suggestions?
Can I change this behavior which I do not like.

    - if I open the attachment (i.e word ffdoc file) and
General preferences is "Remove unedited downloads
after message is deleted " , the attachment copy
    remains in ~/Mail Dowloads folder
This is exactly the behavior I would expect. The attachment remains there forever unless the message it came from is deleted. That's exactly what that setting means, doesn't it?
    - if I open the attachment and General Preferences is
"Remove unedited downloads when Mail Quits" , a copy
is saved in ~/Mail Downloads folder, then when Mail
quits the attachment is removed from ~/Mail
    Downloads folder
Again, I don't see what's wrong with this. Mail does exactly what the setting you've chosen says it should do. I must be missing something...

  • Anyone having problems saving attachments.

I am unable to save my downloaded email attachments.   I tap the check icon but nothing happens.  Tried holding down on the page that doesn't work either. Rebooted several times to no avail.

Sme attachments that come in emails can be viewed on the iPad but you must have an appropriate app in order to save them to your iPad.
Photos are the exception as the iPad comes with the Photos app.
To save Word docs you need an app that can read and write those kind of docs. I use Pages for word processing.
I use iBooks to save and read PDFs. But there are numerous other apps for PDFs.
What type of documents are you trying to save? Knowing that will help us suggest an appropriate app.

  • Mail: Saving Attachments

I upgraded the OS on my iMac from Snow Leopard to Mavericks 10.9.3 (13D65) on Sunday, and now I'm having a problem with mail.app. I'm running Mail Version 7.3 (1878.2), and I'm unable to save any attachments or images in emails.
From browsing in this forum, I note that there's been some changes to Mail between the Snow Leopard and Mavericks versions of the OS, and now there are options for "Save Attachments" and "Quick Look Attachments" in the File menu.  However, for some reason within my copy of Mail, these are greyed out:
I also note that there are "hidden icons" that appear when you mouse over the header/detail information within each email message, and that these contain an attachments symbol (usually a paperclip). However, again in my copy of Mail, the attachments symbol doesn't exist:
Additionally, when I click on an image or attachment within an email message, the only option I get is "copy image" or "copy attachment" -- when I select this, nothing happens. (I used to get a very helpful menu with all sorts of options... This appears to have gone.)
I've checked for this issue on multiple emails and in multiple email boxes, and it seems to be a problem throughout mail.app -- and I've googled, too, but not found anything to suggest what is happening here, or how to fix it.
Does anyone have any advice or ideas as to what's wrong, and/or how I could save images/attachments from my email? This is severely compromising my workflow.
    Thanks!

    post.user_wrote.label:
Try control - clicking the attachment. You should get an option to display as icon. Select it and see if you can save it.
If you want all attachments to display as icon, try running the Terminal command below.
defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool YES
    Hi Eric,
Thanks for taking the time to reply. Sadly, neither of your suggestions worked. I'm beginning to wonder whether saving attachments can be somehow disabled at sender level. Have you heard of such a thing? But then, it wouldn't account for this happening across mail.app...
    Cheers,
    H.

  • Mavericks Mail: Cannot exclude meeting.ics attachments from Smart Mailbox

I'm trying to set up a smart mailbox in Mail (Mavericks 10.9.2) that searches for all email containing attachments, but excludes all meeting invitations (attachments with name = meeting.ics). Sounds simple, but I cannot figure out how to do it.
I've got two filters in the smart mailbox:
    Contains Attachments
Any attachment name > does not contain > meeting.ics
Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong and how to fix this?

    Tried all the fixes described.

Never had such a problem as with mail in mavericks.
    What a disaster!

    Fix this ASAP.
    Pretty please!

  • Saving attachments in Mail extremely slow!!!

I can't seem to find any mention of this anywhere! But since 10.5.2 saving attachments from mail is extremely slow. Try an email with many attachments - more than 10. The size doesn't seem to matter. It takes roughly 1 second per attachment. Pre 10.5.2 was almost instant. Problem remains in 10.5.3.
Doesn't matter if I hit the 'save' button or choose 'save attachments' from the File menu.
Other mail programs do not do this. (Entourage, Gayzmail)
I think it has something to with quarantine but can't find any info.
    Steve

Works here in 10.6.8.  Are you using Lion, by chance?

  • Intermittent error saving attachments from mail: "Names longer than 31 characters are not supported on the destination volume."

I am reciving intermittent errors saving attachments from mail: "Names longer than 31 characters are not supported on the destination volume."

    I am seeing this too.
I Posted in similar thread 6704033
Error when saving calendar exports-names longer than 31 characters not supported on the destination volume.
Very spooky. Not always reproducible, but it happened to me while using Office365-Outlook web-based email (saving a PDF).
RE: the suggestion, checking security box "allow apps downloaded from all sites" I would really rather not do that.
On my system it is set to allow "Mac App store and identified developers."
Oh sorry, I'm on Yosemite, I see this is Mav forum...

  • Saving attachments on Snow leopard mail loses file extension when saving over an existing document

Saving attachments on Snow leopard mail loses the file extension when clicking on an existing file to copy the name. Is there something I can switch on in the preferences to fix this?

I work for a publishing company where our clients send their copy to us in Word documents. We might have several versions sent to us before the final version comes in.
It is instances like this where we want to overwrite a document on the server with the most up-to-date version (which is usually named differently to the original file). We really don't want to clutter the folder with lots of different revisions. The quick way to do this is to click on the document we are replacing (this copies the document name). Previous versions of OSX Mail used to keep the file extension but Snow Leopard seems to remove it.
It's annoying as there is no particular logic to this. We just have to manually type ".doc" at the end of the document.
Incidentally, this happens with any attachment file type.

  • Problem sending a mail to many adresses with attachments (Javamail, JSP)

    Hi,
i got a problem with JavaMail trying to send a mail to different email-adresses in a JSP. The mail should be send to about 27 adresses, which works fine whenever i send it without any attachments. As soon as i attach a file, the mail still gets send without an error, but only to about 12 adresses instead of the intended 27. I get the adresses out of a database and in either case, there ist the correct amount of adresses. The Mailserver doesnt report anything - it sends the mails without any problem at the 12 adresses.
Here is the part of the code, thats sending:
    Properties props = new Properties();
    props.put("mail.smtp.host", "192.168.1.1 ");
    Session s;
    MimeMessage message;

With active debug i got following information:
The first mail in the debug-log is with the source code as quoted in my first post, the second mail is when i cut out the part which generates and adds the attachement. I had to make the adresses anonymous, but the second mail contains a lot more adresses then the first, although they both use the same query with same parameters, etc.
Have i done something wrong with the attachements? Overwriting headers, syntax errors, anything? I'm out of ideas...
edit: Had to cut out the debug-log because it is too big. It just said that everything was working ok, but the first mail contains too few adresses and the second (without attachement) the correct number of adresses. I can mail the log, if you like.

  • Saving attachments to Time Capsule disk from mail.app

I'm in a small business enviroment where we use the Time Capsule for both backup and and as a shared drive.
But I'm having trouble saving attachments – pictures, worddocs etc, directly to the TC drive. If I save it to the desktop and then copy it to the TC drive everything is fine. Any suggestions ???
    I'm on a Macbook Pro OSX10.5.3

Yes, it is possible to do that.
There are downside to doing that.
First, anything moved to the Time Capsule can't be backed up so the data will not be protected.
Second, any data outside the backup makes it difficult for Time Machine to maintain free space for backups on the Time Capsule.
My suggestion is to get an external disk drive and plug it into either the Mac or Time Capsule and use that for your data storage.

  • Mail and iPhoto Problems with sending photos.

Mail and iPhoto Problems with sending photos.
I have this problem that started a while ago and seems to be getting worse.
    Here are the different scenarios.
-If I try to share a photo to email within iPhoto, it will insert the image file name in the mail message, but no image icon or opened image. In iPhoto Preferences under General I have chosen to use Email Photos using Mail.
-If I choose to use iPhoto to send the photo, it will compose the message and the photo is viewable. If I send the message i can view the photo within the email I sent to myself. Nothing happens when I double click on the photo in the Mail message. Nothing happens when i control click on the photo in the mail message. Nothing happens when I try to drag the photo to the desktop from the mail message. When I try to save attachments from the email and choose a place to save it, the save button is grayed out and it cannot be saved. When I check the mail message it says there is an attachemnt but there is no file size listed.
-If I use the stationary within Mail app I cannot drag a photo into the placeholder, I get a circle with a line through it symbol when I try. It happens if I try to drag a photo from the desktop or from the media browser within Mail app.
-If I drag the photo to the desktop from iPhoto, I can double click it on the desktop and it will open in Preview.
-If I then control click on the same photo on the desktop and scroll to share/email, the generic photo icon will be inserted in the mail message. If i double click the photo icon in the mail message  I get a message it can't be opened because it is empty.
-If I drag that same image to the mail message body the same thing happens.
-If I send that email to someone they cannot open the image file.
    What I can do:
    - I can drag that same image file on the desktop to my dropbox folder and  it will upload. From there I can go on my iPad and download the photo and send it through email just fine.
-I can open the same image file on my desktop in Preview, I can copy and paste it into a mail message and the image will be viewable in the mail message by me and by the recipient.
-I can drag that same image on the desktop to my safari browser window and it will be viewable in the page. i can then copy and paste that image into a mail message and it is viewable in the message.  I can then send that email message to myself and i can control click on the image and get all my options. It also shows as an attachment with the size of the image file in the mail message.
I can send that message to someone and they can see the photo and open it fine.
-If I send that same email to me I can see the photo within the mail.  If I then drag that photo to the desktop I cannot use it again to put in an email as the same problem happens again.
I have tried all scenarios in my user account, another users account and in a guest account. The same happens in all. I am guessing because of this it is not a corrupt preference file, unless all of the preference files are corrupt. The guest user account I added a new email account so it was brand new and still had the problem.
I am stumped, all and any help is appreciated.

Another problem that may be related….
I have Snapz Pro. I used to be able to save the snaps to my desktop or a folder. Now when I take a screenshot and try to save the file to my desktop or a folder on my desktop I get this message  "Files cannot be created in the selected location. You do not have permission to write to the selected location.   Please choose a different location."  I have found that i can only save the file to the clipboard.   I have repaired permissions many times and still I have this problem.

  • Downloads Folder No Longer Jumps Up When Saving Attachments

When saving attachments in Mail, my downloads folder on the Doc used to jump up a couple of times when I hit "save" from within an email that I received to signify that I just saved it into that folder.
However, for no rhyme or reason, the downloads folder no longer jumps up when I save attachments. The attachment still save in to that folder but I miss the pop-up action telling me that it did.
I searched the net and posts and found nothing on this quark. This is driving me nutz!
    Please help!

Check in System Preferences>Dock and check off Animate opening applications and see if that doesn't do it. Not sure if that is why but it is worth a shot.

  • Can you customize what folder MAIL goes to when adding attachments?

Can you customize what folder MAIL goes to when adding attachments?
My friend has 2 email addresses for businesses.
He has invoices in folders for both, and wants to set up the Mac like this:
When he writes from one email address and attaches documents - he want the Mac always to go to the corresponding folder for that company of his. Same for the other email address...
    Make sense?
    Can this be done?
    Thanks in advance....

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
