Mail in OS 10.8.2 very sloooow!

The new mail (OS 10.8.2) is very slow. I click on Inbox and it could take up to a minute for anything to load. The same w/SENT. Also, click on get mail, nothing happens. Eventually, it will download one or two, more later. Finally, one more question: how do you "delete" mail in such a way that it doesn't reappear under the Inbox?
I wish I had the 10.6.8 Mail back! No problems with that!
Thanks!

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Quit and relaunch Mail, and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Mail 2.1 and folders loading very slowly

    Hi there,
just had to perform installs on a brandnew MacBook. We downloaded all updates, including 10.4.7 and then tried to setup Mail. Everything was working fine until we created folders in Mail that are stored locally. They appear just fine until Mail is restarted. Then they need up to 30 seconds to appear in mail even with no messages in them.
Deleting the Envelope.index-file works just for one restart and then again, folders need a very long period of time to load up.
Disk utility's repair permissions doesn't find anything to repair, even before and after recreating the Envelope.index.
I no longer know, where the error might be.
Already trashed the entire Mail-folder and the mail.plist and to set up mail again - this procedure didn't help me out, either.
As to note again. I just installed the system, today. And Mail setup was the first thing after all installs and updates.
We updated on a system, where nothing had been done except installing the entire MacOS by using the Install Discs that came with the MacBook.
Does anybody know, how we can tell Mail to display the folders properly on startup?
    Regards,
    Enrico

What makes you think Mail is syncing with .Mac? Could it be that it's looking for certificates instead? Open Keychain Access > Preferences, and disable Search .Mac For Certificates if it's enabled. Take a look at the following articles for an explanation of why this could be a problem:
    http://www.hawkwings.net/2006/07/18/apple-mail-phones-home-too/
    http://www.macgeekery.com/tips/mailapp_doesnt_phone_homeeither/
Also, go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network > Show: Network Port Configurations. Make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet is at the top of the list, and disable any communications/networking configuration enabled, but not in use.

  • HT1694 Why is it when I delete my junk mail on my pc they don't disappear on my iPad or iPhone. As well when I put a file in a folder it doesn't go in the folder on other devices. Why is it that u have to delete junk mail one at a time. Very annoying

Why does my junk mail delete on pc but not on iPad or iPhone  why do I have to delete each one seperately on these devices and why do my files go into folders on the pc and don't appear on iPad or iPhone

Not too sure about the last part of your post but you have to manage your emails on each device if you are using a Pop3 account. It is only IMAP which provides for synchronisation across all devices. If you are not familiar with this then Google IMAP AND POP3 for more information.

  • AFP and Xserve RAID very SLOOOOW

Recently we have been having problems with AFP pegging the Xserve RAID activity lights. Xserve RAID Disk access is very slow.
    Machine Specs:
    Dual 2.3 GHZ G5 Xserve
1GB RAM (recently downgraded because of memory problems after a power outage)
    1x80GB Xserve drive module
    3TB Xserve RAID 5
Xserve RAID has been upgraded to 1.5 FW and has both ethernet connections connected.
The whole story is we had a power outage last week. The servers all came back up fine. Throughout the day we noticed that the file server was acting strange. We checked server monitor and it said that RAM slot 3&4 had problems. We opened up System Profiler and it reported that modules 2&3 were only 256MB! (These are 512MB modules). We brought the machine down and pulled the modules. The machine is now at 1GB of memory with more coming. The next day the machine was incredibly slow and the RAIDs access lights were pegged. Also something was pulling all free memory into inactive memory. After trial and error I've found that if I turn off AFP the RAID is no longer pegged and the memory goes back to normal. I thought AFP was the problem and did a complete rebuild of the server last night. This morning the same thing is happening. Also the logs show nothing is wrong.
All of our Macintosh users are Mobile accounts over AFP. We have around 60 Macintosh users. All of our PC users connect using SMB. We have around 20 PC users. All of our network users work off of the file shares.
Thanks for any and all help,
    -dustin

Check so that the Xserve RAID diskcache settings are not reset/off.
I have had to take apart the RAID controllers and putting them back togheter again to alleviate slowness/"malfunction" making a couple of RAIDs operating like normal again.
I use Helios Lantest http://www.helios.de/ and XRG to measure/stress disks locally and over the network to see if they are working correctly.

  • Mail and Address Book crashing, system very slooooow in general

Not to confuse possibly separate issues, but my iMac 20 has been running slower and slower lately (continually watching the little technicolor beach ball spin), now both Mail and Address Book are crashing immediately upon attempting to start up.
Separate issues? Part of the same? And most importantly, what do I do?
    Thanks!

Problem was to many smart groups in my address book

  • Mail app itself stutters and is very slow.

I installed Lion today with little problems until now.  My Mail app (v 5.1) is excruciatingly slow.  Scrolling up and down the list of emails shows to have a 1 to 3 second delay.  If I closed out of the app and went back in to it, it would take minutes for the app to load and be functional.  Emails get drafted and mailed with ease, but it's the function of the app that is currently the problem.  I've checked things like clearing the cache, having all other app's closed, etc. and still nothing. My Safari works just fine - quick as ever and even over Airport.  I can only guess there is something amiss between iCloud and Lion.
Thanks for any help or empathy out there!

What’s the capacity and space available on the startup disk?
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Now, go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network > Show: Network Port Configurations, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
Finally, try launching Mail with no Internet connection. Does Mail work properly while offline?

  • Mail restored.... now very slow and often sends multiple versions

Email is back.... with a caveat, very slow sending.
This may be another artifact of being a 1%er.

In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes": do not clear the Cookies
If you clear cookies then Firefox will also try to remove cookies created by plugins and that requires to start plugin-container processes that can slow down closing Firefox.
Instead let the cookies expire when Firefox is closed to make them session cookies.

  • Problem with very sloooow printing of pdfs in Acrobat 7 Pro and 9 Pro

Some pdfs print with no problem but others are painfully slow. We find that some that are slow with Adobe 7 Pro print fine with Adobe 9 Pro, while others are slow with Adobe 9 Pro but print fine with Adobe 7 Pro. Still others are slow with both. A huge productivity problem for us. Any suggestions? Thanks.

when you get to the print screen it looks fine on the page, I've tried all the other options for scaling and when it prints it prints really tiny in the middle of the page. I have the paper set to letter. I did't see any options about shrinking the print.

  • I moved to Apple Mail from Outlook. It is very slow.

I use a Mac Pro (2.8GHz Quad Core Xeon) with 10GB of RAM. I have a SSD system drive with 209GB free space. I type ahead after about 40-50 characters when creating a message. It takes 60-90 seconds to open a reply. Absolutely nothing else on this system runs like this. I use Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office and they charge along just fine. Any suggestions?

I do not know if i am able to explain properly or not here.

  • Yahoo Mail automatically reloads in IE after magnifying very large in Firefox. Will not open correctly in Firefox at all.

    Hello,
I have had this issue for a long time now and just dealt with it by always reading my mail in IE, which I dislike very much. It's very strange...When I click on my Yahoo Mail shortcut (or access it any other way), the page shows up for several seconds very distorted and totally magnified before it reloads in IE, at which point this is in my browser window: chrome://ieview/content/reloaded.html. I set the page to automatically load in IE because I cannot read the distorted page what-so-ever in Firefox. At one point, it worked for a couple days and I thought it somehow fixed by itself. However, it went right back to messing up. The thing that initially triggered this was that my cat was stepping all over my keyboard one day and somehow she hit a combination of keys to cause this issue. Any help would be much appreciated!

    You're welcome

  • Archiving old mail - as mail is running very slow

Can someone please give me some guidance as to how to archive my older emails in Mail? I have to keep a copy of everything but some of my inbox's have 20,000+ emails in them and this is making Mail run very slow. I would love to be able to select for example a date criteria and export or archive everything prior to that date. Any ideas? Also, am i right in assuming this will make Mail run faster for me? The slowness occurs usually when switching between mail boxes within the application. Thanks in advance, John

    Hi David,
Thanks for your reply. I downloaded VacuumMail and ran it successfully, it seemed to have worked yesterday but again today opening my inbox is very slow loading again.
I have now created a new white folder called Archive and moved 15,000 of my incoming messages into a sub folder within there and have done the same with 10,000 of my sent messages into a 'sent' sub folder of the white folder. This leaves me with around 8,000 in my inbox and 5,000 in my sent folder. Is this the reason that my mail is still opening these folders very slowly, because of the large volume of mail? I guess i must see the little clock icon to the right of the inbox for about 15-25 seconds each time before the mail is displayed in my inbox folder...
Are there any other diagnostics i should run?
Finally, thanks to everyone who has posted in this forum. I have been trying to hit the 'helpful' button for each of you but there seems to be a bug with this as i get the following message each time:
    Error

  • Both mail and address book very slow to launch on 10.6 and 10.6.1

Like unimaginably slow. After clicking on the applications, I was able to perform a google search, find this forum, and and start this thread before either application became active.
I am running 10.6.1 and have had this problem since 10.6. not before.
I upgraded my system, I did not install Snow Leopard fresh, and I really hope I dont have to to solve this problem. So much for the speed portion of the Snow Leopard improvements!
Has anybody else seen this issue? I certainly hope so because it's terrible to have to track down a problem like this alone.

Thank you for this link. Here is the process I used to fix it.
1 - I had one smart group in address book, with a NOT variable. (if contact is NOT in any group)
2 - click on the smart folder, wait a long time for it to be selected.
3 - delete the smart folder
    4 - close address book
    5 - reboot.
6 - both Mail and Address book now open very quickly. Problem solved
    Thanks again!
    EDIT:
re-creating the same smart group brings back the same problem!!! So we have broken address book functionality in 10.6? just awesome....

  • Mail is printing in very small font

Out of the blue my mail (when printed) comes out in very small font.  When viewing my mail this is not happening.   I did not make any changes to my mail preferences and cannot find a location to reinstall a font which is at least 12 or 14 pt. when I choose to print something.  Help.

First of all, your post above says you're running OS X Version 10.4.11, which is several years old now.  Since this is a Mountain Lion forum, I will assume that your post is incorrect about your version.
Font size on print is determined, among other things, by making the page fit.  Check the settings on the print page.  They affect scaling:

  • How to stop e-mail downloads once in email app

Really annoying thing: First, it's bad enough that you HAVE to download e-mails as soon as you press the e-mail app, rather than choosing which account you want to collect e-mails from once the app is open (only way round this is to completely switch off individual accounts).
But even worse, I find that once I'm in the app and e-mails are downloaded, switching between accounts downloads AGAIN. In other words you cannot just "view" the e-mails on one account then switch to another to "view". Each switch to the other account invokes another download even if you just did so ten seconds ago.
If there is a way around this I would be grateful to know.
If there isn't, then this is a major flaw. Sometimes the user simply wants to view headers in a particular e-mail account, not perpetually download everytime a n account is accessed.

I assure you I haven't misunderstood in the way you imply. In (nearly) all other respects the iphone is fine. It is now widely accepted that iphone's e-mail client is inflexible and not very good.
If you run multiple e-mail accounts you do not always want every account to download every e-mail. When away from my office for example, I don't want all my personal e-mails downloaded every time I press the e-mail icon, especially if there are lots of them (including the usual liberal dose of spam). I just want to download urgent business e-mails which require an urgent answer. But this is not possible unless I laboriously go into settings and manually switch the whole account on or off. But if it is off I cannot get into them just to view the current e-mails there.....I am forced to download a new lot.
Let's look at an average PC or Mac e-mail client: You can choose to immediately download e-mails on opening it, or for it to be permanently accepting e-mails as in the background, or you can choose to start the app and THEN choose which accounts you want to upload and download.
You cannot get anywhere near this on the iphone. Sure, there is "push" and "fetch" and "manual", but it isn't really "manual" at all. The problem is that unless you completely switch off each account, you'll get every e-mail currently on your ISP server. You also cannot simply view the current e-mails without downloading fresh ones. The whole point of a half decent e-mail client is that it does what YOU want it to do, not what it dictates.
The solution is simple: To have the OPTION of opening the e-mail client and THEN deciding which account you want active, or to download to. If it wasn't for the fact that Apple clearly doesn't want any rivals to its own core apps, this would have been implemented by a third party years ago.
