Mail inbox empty after update and backup
Last night, I backed my system up to an external hard drive through Time Machine. I then had an update to OSX, and completed that. This morning, I checked my iphone and had a new message. I went to my iMac and when I opened Mail, it acted as if it was a new program, with a welcome screen. Now, the Mail menu shows at the top, but no screens are open. When I click go to Inbox, it is empty.
My mail shows on my iphone, but no where else. This just happened.

Even though Mail is presenting the Welcome screen have you tried creating your email account anyway to see if it then operates correctly?

Windows 8.1 desktop empty after updating and application
I was at the Windows 8.1 desktop. while updating an application (not Microsoft) all seemed to go well. AT the end the desktop was completely empty. No Taskbar, no desktop picture, or desktop icons.
The Windows logo key on the keyboard wouldn't take me to the Start Screen. Right clicking on the desktop also did nothing. ALl I could think of was to turn the computer off using the power button. Is there a better way?Hi,
I would like to know the certain name of the application you updated.
It seems that the updating of the application make the explorer.exe crash or no responding.
I suggest you press ctrl+alt+del, and click Task manager.
Then end the process explorer.exe, and click File -> Run New task -> type in explorer.exe.
See what's going on.

I would be concerned too if I was not able to backup my iPhone. I recommend the following article for troubleshooting backup issues with iTunes:

I just rebuilt my mail inbox, 1 iCloud account and 2 other imap accounts, and everything is gone. Nothing on the remote servers either and on all my iCloud sync mobiles. How can i recover all my emails? Thanks it's all my work!!!!!!!
we do what your doing... we use the same ID for "Icloud".

I can no longer open any attachments that are sent to me. I click on and get cannot preview (but have had this for ages). I am clicking on download and nothing happens. It does not download. I clicked to install a new version after updating and clicking repair. But still the attachments won't open including invoices I have received today. It is all attachments not just pdfs.

I purchased a mac book pro in oct 2011, I restarted it after updating and it,s stuck on apple symbol, I hit command R while restarting and clicked on disk utility. It says disk can't be repaired, apple wants $249 to tell me what's wrong. Please help!

If this is a 13" Macbook Pro then that is the cost of the Extended Applecare warranty. As you are outside the 90 days of Free Phone Support then what Apple told you is that to get Phone Support you would either need to pay $45 per phone call or pay $249.00 for the Applecare extended warranty which comes with 3 years Free Phone Support from date of purchase.
Or you can take it to a Apple Genius Bar and have them look at it for Free.
Every Mac comes with 1 year warranty and includes only 90 days of phone support. You can buy the extended Applecare warranty anytime within the first year of ownership, IE until the 1 year warranty runs out.
I suggest you have your computer looked at by either an Apple Authorized Repair Center or Genius Bar and then before the 1 year warranty runs out buying the extended warranty -
I went to back up my iPhone4 and it said there was an update. So I clicked on 'update and backup' (or something close to that.) It took FOREVER...way longer than usual. When it was done, it showed the power cord w/an arrow to iTunes. ***??? I restarted my computer and tried the whole process again and still...the power cord with an arrow to iTunes. And I know this means I have to go to Apple and get another phone and will lose anything that wasn't backed up. Anyone else have this happen or have a solution so I don't have to do a restore???
Reboot your computer.
Disable your antivirus and firewall.
Connect the phone to a USB port directly on your computer, not to a hub. If your computer is not a laptop and has ports on both front and back use a port on the back.
If iTunes does not recognize the phone when you connect it see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
If it STILL doesn't work open a command window and type:
netsh winsock reset
Then try again. (It seems that a recent Microsoft Windows update may have corrupted network settings; this restores them to the factory default).
BTW, was there an error number associated with the failed update? -
After update and restore i am getting a message like ,Your iphone could not be activated because the activation server is temporarily unavailable.also i am getting no service message and also connected to wifi

How can I get my iPhone 4 to update my updates from my app store of it keeps telling me error 3150 or it tell me to refresh the page after updates and the updates are still there asking me to update them again?
Make sure iTunes on the computer is logged into the account on the phone.
Plug the iPhone in.
In the popup window warning about wiping your phone, hit cancel.
In the left pane of iTunes, the phone icon should be there.
Right click on it, select transfer purchases.
Note: this will only transfer music bought from iTunes. Not mp3's from amazon or ripped from CD's. -

HELP?? After restore and backup of my iPhone 5, there are a couple of apps requiring someone else's iTunes login criadentials. Tried to delete apps from other person off of my phone w/o any luck. I have NO idea who's iTunes library this is. Please help!?!

Don't know what to do, after update, cant backup files
Hi everyone, after update from 4.1 to 6.1 iOS I can't load backup from my computer. Until update my phone was almost full storage (80MB was free), I think after 6.1 iOS update, I have less free sapce, and that's the reason why I can't load my backup from my Mac. So what to do now? There is any solution of this problem to restore my backup, because there are my all files and contacs, now my iPhone 3GS is empty. Please help!

That is an instructional note to try to encourage people to click on links they find throughout an EtreCheck report. If you had been infected by adware, there would have been a "Remove" link on that line. I have had trouble getting people to actually click on those links. See the note that Allan Jones posted. This is a "sensitive" area. Many people who report problems also have a similar pattern for this file. I think that the network name lookup hacks in this file may be adversely affecting the performance of your machine. It is designed to cause some network operations to fail, but those failure may contribute to the problems you are experiencing. I think if you used more affordable tools like iDraw or Pixelmator, you wouldn't have to use the /etc/hosts hack. Plus, you wouldn't need as much RAM either.

There may not be anything wrong with that file. Just because something is red doesn't mean it need to be removed. It just means it needs "attention".
When EtreCheck reports a status of "invalid?" (with the question mark), it means that EtreCheck cannot determine if the script is valid or not. It may work perfectly fine. It may be broken but still be harmless. In any event, never try to manually delete files by hand. Always use a vendor-provided uninstaller or uninstallation instructions. If necessary, use the "Support" links to try to find who might be the vendor for a particular configuration file so you can get support from the people who know about it. -
All old e-mails are gone after update
After updating my Gen. 1 iPhone to 2.0 today, I noticed that all the e-mail messages that were on the phone were gone. Inbox, Sent, all of them. Is anybody else experiencing this? I haven't yet tried sending an e-mail to see if my phone is having the same sending issues many of you seem to be having....
I contacted Apple Support to ask for a solution. During a couple of days I received several phone calls asking for info of my different devices and configurations. They didn't have an explanation for my problem and only can recover e-mails for one week ago and. They decide to report to engineering to see what happened and recover the rest.
Meanwhile, after 3 days, my Mail program start to download ALL my mail again. 5000 unreaded e-mails in my inbox. The same way they disappeared they returned. No explanation, no moves, no clicks, nothing. IPhone and iPad sync perfectly.
Two days after that (weekend) Apple Support has called me again (this morning). And that's the strangest part, they have bad news for me because they (nor support neither engineers) cannot recover my lost e-mails!!! Then, I've told them my e-mail has returned and they didn't know it. My problem was solved but Apple Support didn't have a clue why or when.
Happy end but my confidence in iCloud Service has decreased a lot. I've been using my mac.com adress for more than 10 years (most of them paying around 100$) and I didn't expect that kind of surprises and unknwoledge from Apple. -
Upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.4.4 and upon opening mail it imported from the previous mail version. In so doing, none of the mail in my inbox came across, however all the mail in mailboxes (created folders) did. When I look at the mail folders in the library, there is nothing in the pop earthlink folder for the inbox. There is mail in the sent box. Is this inbox mail not saved on the HD? Was it deleted or is it hidden from view? I cannot find it using spotlight or find in any way I have tried. The only other account was an old .mac account from the trial period, I did not subscribe. This is a Powerbook Aluminum 15" G4 1.5mhz, 1 gig RAM, 128 mb vram, 80gig HD with 30 gig available. I have not lost anything critical, but any advice on this would be welcome. We are preparing to upgrade other laptops in thge house and would like to avoid this mishap. Thanks.
Since an account's Inbox is usually the most active mailbox, it is more prone to corruption over time. If this mailbox had some minor corruption that didn't prevent access or was unnoticed with the previous Mail.app version, it can have an effect on the import process. The mbox format used with Tiger Mail is different from previous Mail.app versions. Each message contained in a Tiger mailbox is stored as a separate file in .emix format located within the Messages folder which is within the xxxxxx.mbox folder at the Finder level. This provides for Tiger Spotlight search capabilities.
Along with the import process to Tiger Mail, there is also a conversion process to the Tiger mbox format. Since all other mailboxes were successfully converted, IMO the account's Inbox mailbox had a problem before the import/conversion process.
Did you use the Rebuild Mailbox function on all mailboxes or at least the most active mailboxes on a regular basis? I've been using the Mail.app exclusively since Jaguar was introduced, thru Panther and now Tiger. I do so once a month or so depending on activity and I haven't experienced any problems and my import and conversion process from Panther Mail to Tiger Mail went without a hitch. And I experienced no problems when upgrading from Jaguar to Panther and from Panther to Tiger but I always update my backup immediately before installing a major OS Upgrade as insurance just in case. -
Why won't my Mail app. open after updating to 10.4.4?
I updated my powerbook G4 to 10.4.4. After restarting Apple's Mail application refused to open from my dock. I then tried to launch it by double clicking on the icon in the application folder. It pops up a dialog box which says, "The application Mail quit unexpectedly. Mac OS X and other applications are not affected. Click Reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple." When I click on the 'Reopen' button the dialog box goes away and another one pops up which says, "The application Mail quit unexpectedly after it was opened. Mac OS X and other applications are not affected. Click Try Again to temporarily restore the application's default settings and open it again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple." When I click on the 'Try Again' button a new window opens called 'New Account' which 'guides' me through the necessary steps to set up my mail account. When I click 'continue' a new window opens which asks for my user name and also my .Mac account password. Once I enter this info I click on the 'continue' button and it logs into .Mac and gives me an Account Summary so it's acting like everthing is okay until I press the 'continue' button and then I get the same error message as before: "The application Mail quit unexpectedly. Mac OS X and other applications are not affected. Click Reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple."
I downloaded the freeware program called Preferential Treatment by Jonathan Nathan in hopes it would remove a damaged Mail .plist file. No dice - no problems with Mail prefrence files according to this software. I'm at a loss of what to do next. I read that someone else had a similiar problem - I don't know what to do next. Any help would be really appreciated as I use my Mail program constantly. Thanks! Oh, also when entering this Post and describing my system the OS menu provided does not allow me to select OS 10.4.4. I'm sure that will be udated soon.

External Editor and Export Preferences failing
I'm unable to set an External Photo Editor in the prefernces pane. When I hit the "Choose" button it greys out for a moment; nothing happens; and then it returns with no change. In addition, I'm not able to Export any photo - Original or Version.
