Mail inbox isn't recognizing senders in my address book?

Recently, my Mail program has started listing my received emails as From "Yahoo" or "Hotmail", even though they are from known senders in my address book - ones that previously showed up with their name, or at least their enitre email address under the From column.
How do I fix this?
Thanks

Hi rowinator,
I assume, you've activated the thunderbirtd junk-filter? Or do you use your own filters?
May be there's another filter, executed afterwards, that marks the mail as junk? You can have a look into the filterlog.html in your TB folder, there you can see if one of your own filters caught this mails.

  • What is the smallest data structure record in a .TXT file record to be recognized as an Apple Address Book "Data Card"?

Hello! This is my first time in this discussion group. The question posed is the subject line itself:
What is the smallest data structure record in a .TXT file record to be recognized as an Apple Address Book "Data Card"?
I'm lazy! As a math instructor with 40+ students per class per semester (pCpS), I would rather not have to create 40 data cards pCpS by hand, only to expunge that info at semester's end. My college's IS department can easily supply me with First name, Last name, and eMail address info, along with a myriad of other fields. I can manipulate those data on my end to create the necessary .TXT file, but I don't know the essential structure of that file.
    Can you help me?
    Thank you in advance.
    Bill

    Hello Bill, & welcome aboard!
No idea what  pCpS is, sorry.
To import a text file into Address Book, it needs to be a comma delimited .csv file, like...

  • Can I have Mail format the "From" field based on my Address book entries?

I have most of my contacts in my address book, but Mail still displays the "From" field in the message list pane with the normal email address header.
    Here's an example:
User A emails me a message from this address:
    "User A" <[email protected]>
In my Address Book, I have User A's info as this:
    First Name: Bob
    Last Name: Marley
    Email Address: [email protected]
In Mail, though, the "From" field in the message list view still says ...
    User A
... when I want it to say ...
    Bob Marley
Does that make sense? How can I do this?

All you need is a plug adaptor, if required. Apple sells an adapter kit:

  • Mailing List I made up disappeared from the address book after I got out of the address book.

I made up a mailing list with all my families emails in it. I got out of the address book and when I went into it again later, the mailing list I just made up was not there.

    fiddledum,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I would recommend that you check out Font Management in Mac OS X Tiger and Panther, by Kurt Lang.
Another possibility is to Quit Address Book, find the com.apple.AddressBook.plist in the ~Library/Preferences Folder. Drag it to the Desktop, and log out/in or restart.
Attempting to install a newer version as you have discovered will not work.
    ;~)

  • Addresses in mail don't show all that are in Address Book?

I have about 25 names listed in a group in Address Book. When I access this group in Mail, only 8 are shown. Any ideas how I can get all 25 as they used to show up in Mail and now don't.

Same here... When I receive invitations in mail (from either Outlook or other iCal users), the "automatically retrieve invitations from mail" no longer works since upgrading to leopard. Works on my wife's system, however.
Also noticed that sending invitations to other users running Outlook no longer works if they are in the Outlook client, but works if they are using the web interface to exchange. Very strange.
So close to making the Mac able to play nice with the office, but yet so far... I am not going to pay $400.00 for Office 2008 for Mac either.

  • Mail thinks I am a different card in Address Book

For a couple of days now, when I receive new mail, Mail displays the name from a different card in the address book in the "To" section. It should recognize "my card" from the address book, but is picking up my entry for my AAA membership card in address book.
Anyone know of a way to unconfuse Mail on this point?
    Thanks much! Mary-Chicago

It shows "AAA" and it shows my e-mail address correctly....and when I select Open in Address Book, it takes me to the AAA card.....AHA! Thank you for leading me to figuring this out!
In my address book card for AAA, I made 2 custom entries....I am tracking both AAA memberships, for myself and my daughter. I am using 2 of my e-mail addresses to do this, so in my AAA address book card, I listed these 2 accounts with reminders of which e-mail I am using for each of us. Mail FOUND the e-mail address on this AAA address book card and since that e-mail is associated with my Mail account, it apparently adopted this card as me for incoming mail. As soon as I adjusted this on the AAA card to be a hint rather than the actual e-mail address, the problem was immediately fixed in Mail!
Thanks so much for helping me find this.....was a strange one.

  • Mail app. and Webmail .Mac don't sync Address Book properly

How does one go about making these 3 things Sync with each other correctly?
    What I mean is this:
I have a lot of contacts with emails and such in my Address Book. I can access those with the Mail app. and I can send emails and keep on adding more info.
I use my .Mac account to supposedly sync and backup everything - so that when I happen to be away from my computer or if I want to surf it by webmail in to my account, I can -
however, when I access the address book inside my account in webmail, it's all jumbled up. A lot of the contacts have 2 copies of each, and then all the email addresses that I have been saving when I get new emails from new people within webmail it saves as a completely new contact.
This is getting tedious. Is there any way to make all these sync a little more coherently?
    Thank you for your suggestions.

Sorry all,  re my question above,  since reading a response, from Winston Churchill, to another question I realise that I have two address lists on my iPhone (iCloud and On My Mac). They match each other and (MacBook)Address Book  but don't match the Mail Contacts.  Thanks, M

  • Mail automatically adding last name to Contact in Address Book

Here is the problem. I have a contact "John" in my address book. No last name. I have his email "[email protected]" in his card. Whenever I send and receive mails from his email address (In Apple Mail) it automatically adds the last name "Doe" to the last name field in the address book. Is there anyway to stop this?

It's DEFINITELY a bug! My wife's name is "Jac" and every time I correct the address book to be "Jac" with no surname (or no Christian name and "Jac" as the surname) with in a day or so her contact is listed as "Jac Jac."
It's not listed this way anywhere else. Her emails to me are listed with her full name, not Jac Jac.
I just checked and she was in my previous recipients listed as Jac Jac, so perhaps if I remove that entry from the previous recipients of all my machines this might stop. But it must have started somewhere!

  • Mail and Address Book contacts don't seem to be matching up

I recently upgraded to Leopard from Tiger. Most things work great, but I've been noticing some very problematic discrepancies between Mail and my Address Book. For instance, I'll receive a message from one person, but when I hit reply, it will put an entirely different e-mail address in the reply box. Or in another case, someone wrote me and cc'd a colleague. But my iPhone mail and my Mail program disagree on who was cc'd (one shows a friend, the other shows a work colleague)—I don't know which one is correct!
I'm guessing that my mail program isn't reconciling correctly with my Address Book (since all these people are also in my address book.) It's driving me a little crazy. Has anyone had similar issues?
    Thanks,
    David

you need to rebuild your mailbox. select your inbox and choose "rebuild" from the mailbox menu. If that doesn't help try rebuilding the entire mail index. quit mail and delete the file homedirectory/library/mail/envelope index. start mail and let it import (that means reindex).

  • IPhone email, Mail and Address Book (and MobileMe)

    Hi All.
Can someone please explain to me how Mail is able to use the Address Book contacts - if in fact it does use the Address Book contacts - on my laptop and my desktop?
I am currently on Thunderbird but have other software that I am told syncs to Address Book. This would make my life easier. I am thinking about converting to Mail instead of Thunderbird (to cut out one step in the "food chain" but I want to be sure I am making the right move and understand what I am doing.
Also, can anyone explain to me what my iPhone email is accessing when it tries to do an autocomplete?
Do the "Contacts" on my iPhone sync up to Address Book in any way via MobileMe??
Thanks for help on any of that...
    Jon

    Hi Daiya.
I can't tell you how much help this is.
Yes, iPhone Contacts sync to Address Book, via either iTunes sync or MobileMe.
This is sort of funny isn't it? That they are called Contacts on the iPhone and Address Book on MobileMe and on my laptop?
I believe the iPhone autocomplete checks both your Contacts AND any recently used addresses--there's no built-in method to clear the recently used addresses, as far as I know.
This is true for both MobileMe mail, GMail and for my website based email ([email protected]), yes?
You might also check out Postbox--from what I understand, it's built on Thunderbird, but it says it talks to the Mac Address Book and other parts of OS X.
    Thanks!
Integration with OS X features does seem to be Thunderbird's weak spot--I actually use MS Entourage, which has reasonable integration, much better than Thunderbird. I'd say it's not so much that you need to cut out a step in the food chain as that Thunderbird just doesn't participate in the OS X food chain.
Hi. Thanks. I'm planning on getting CardScan (where I handle Business Cards) synced up with Address Book. I can do this and it would be really simple I am told.
The question is now where do I go from there.
I have not read up on PostBox yet but I am starting to think that I need to perfect my Address Book in Thunderbird and export it to Address Book. Then I can start handling email in Mail.
If I do this, my thought is that my business cards will be synced with Address Book, Address Book will be synced with Mail (on my laptop and my desktop) and Address Book will be synced with my iPhone Contacts (where I compose email).
    How does that sound??!!
    Long time goal over here...

  • Retreiving mail and address book info to new machine

    Hi,
My main machine, the iMac is in for repairs. Before it went I backed up the entire HD to an external HD.
I'm now working from an iBook. I'd like to recover past mail messages and address book info from the external HDD to the iBook.
I have imported mailboxes, as advertised, but the messages within those boxes did not import.
I have imported address book info, but they were not my addresses (or rather very few of them were) Mostly they were for Apple employees!
I didn't separately back-up or otherwise archive msgs and addresses, just copied the entire iMac HDD to the external.
Can anyone give me an idiot's guide to moving my msgs and addresses to the iBook from the external HDD?
    Thx in advance.

for the email issue, once you had imported the accounts did u rebuild the inbox? u will be surprised what may appear.
My best way for moving mail from one machine to another is just to copy the mail folder in the users library and the com.apple.mail.plist and just reopen mail and it will apppear. Same with address book, copy from library the folder called Address Book Plug-Ins, inside Application Support, the fiolder called Address Book and the com.apple.AddressBook.plist.
Otherwise a simple way of doing the address book is just to back up your database from the file menu before you swap computers and then use the restore from backup option.
    Hope that helps

  • 'Mail' and 'Address Book' not communicating

I have recently started using 'Mail' and 'Address Book'.
There is a problem: These programs don't seem to communicate. When I address an e-mail, the addressee is not auto-filled from 'Address Book'. Likewise, I can't select a name in 'Address Book' and e-mail to that person.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

In Address Book, what happens if you click the label (home, work ...) beside a contact's email address?
In Mail's Preferences/Composing have you selected "Automatically Complete Addresses"?
    AK

  • Mail seems to add certain contacts to Address Book automatically

I'm not sure how it happens as I can't seem to find the option in Mail to turn it off, but it seems as though Mail wants to automatically add contacts into my Address Book.
At least I think it's Mail. I don't think iPhone would do that, would it?
Any idea how I can turn that off?

If you sync multiple devices via iCloud and at the same time sync the contacts via email boxes or even several then your contacts / address book will end up in chaos. When you add contacts on a mobile device one expect to be asked to which mailbox you would like to add the contact but this is not happening i.e. the new contact is synced with all mailboxes that have the sync contacts on.
As an example is you add a contact from your iPhone this contact is propagated via iCloud to the sync'd devices e.g. iMac and iPad and also to all the email accounts if the option sync contacts is on.
On the other hand if you add an email account with contacts and switch the sync contacts option on you might see multiple entries of the same contact. These will disappear / 'be deleted' if you switch the sync contacts off for the  the email account.
The best choice is keep the iCloud sync on for all devices and switch the sync of contacts of all your mail accounts off and import , cleanup duplicates off all the various contacts lists.

  • Is there a way to copy e-mail contacts from PC to address book on IMac without manually putting in each address?

I am  trying to copy my e-mail contacts from my hotmail account to my address book on the Imac.  I have copied all contacts to a thumb drive (zip drive) to transfer to the address book, however, I can not find any information on how to copy from thumb drive to address book.  Is there a better way to do this?

Addressbook will understand vCard file format.
