Mail - inbox settings

Is there any way of getting Mail to select the email below one you've just deleted in the inbox? I find how it selects the one above counterintuitive, especially as I've got my emails organised with the most recent at the top.
G5 iMac Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Ms Alfalfa,
This may be counterintuitive to you, but there is logic behind it. It jumps from the one you have deleted to the next one in line that was received. If you sort your mail with latest mails at the bottom of the list, it will still jump to the next one in line, so now it jumps down instead of up.
I do not know of a workaround, it may be something you have to get used to, like driving on the wrong side of the road

  • How do I permanently delete email messages from my Mail inbox?

Ever since I migrated from Mobile Me to iCloud, I can't seem to delete messages from my MacBook Mail inbox.  They just reappear seconds later.  What do I need to do to delete them permanently?  I've tried looking in the settings, preferences, accounts, etc.  I've also made sure to select the "hide deleted messages" from the View tab.  Please help!  I am sure that there is a simple solution.  They are also staying on my iPhone and iPad.

Settings > General > Spotlight Search > Uncheck Messages
It's that or Restore the device as New with iTunes
    Hope that helps

  • No  messages seen in e.mail inbox I pad2?

No messages or photos seen in the e.mail inbox of my I pad2. Only header and title.

Try turning the account off and on : Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars , then tap the account on the right, slide Mail to 'off', exit settings and go back into the Mail app, and then go back to Settings and slide Mail back to 'on'
If that doesn't work then try closing the Mail app completely : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Mail app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
Also do a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Lost mail inbox after sync - help!

After a recent new version of iTunes was downloaded onto the iMac, the my iPhone (version 4.2.10) mail inbox was empty after the first sync.  The only way I can find to retrieve the emails is to resend them to myself.  This is at least the 3rd time this has happened, although I honestly don't recall if the other 2 were on the first sync after a change to iTunes.  I did not change any settings on the phone, but it sure seems as if I have something set incorrectly.  Any help is much appreciated!  Thanks.

  • How to get notes to appear in the mail inbox

Okay, so, before i reinstalled my ipod touch, the notes i wrote on it apperared in my mail inbox on my imac.
But after i reinstalled it or whatever, they don't, and i can't seem to get them to appear there again, can anyone help me with this?
I don't want to write notes in the mail app, i want the notes from my ipod go to my mail inbox on the computer

On your iPod head to Settings -> Mail, Contacts, and Calendars and tap on the email account you wish to have Notes synced with.  On the screen that appears, make sure Notes is turned on.
Next, head to the Notes app and tap the Accounts button in the top left corner.  Then tap on the desired email account and started placing and creating notes there.

  • Can anyone explain why some of my mail goes straight into Archive and doesn't show up in my Mail Inbox?

I don't understand the Archive folder.  My Mail Inbox receives mail for my Mac, Gmail & AOL accounts - but sometimes after I've read an email I then can't find it when I check back for it later.  And then I discover it's in the Archive folder, though I haven't done anything to make it move to Archive.  So it must be happening automatically, and seemingly at random.  Can anyone explain how this could be and how I can prevent it continuing to happen?  Thanks.

Andy, thanks for your reply. I was just going to post that I seem to have solved the problem.
What I ended up doing was to first back up the mail folder. Then I created some Saved Mail folders and did a search to find the e-mails that weren't displaying and put them into a saved mail folder. Then I went in and deleted the e-mail account that wasn't displaying mail. (It would show the number of new messages in the red circle, but didn't show any messages being in the inbox when you clicked on the account.) Anyway, after trying to backup everything and deleting the problem e-mail account, I rebuilt the inbox and then re-entered the information for that account to set it back up. After I did this, messages come into the account just fine and show up just like they should.
The file structure looked to be the same as what your finder image shows. When I did the search which let me find the messages, all I noted was that it would say they were either in the Inbox, Sent Mail, Trash, etc. But, once I had them showing in the search window, I could copy them to a saved mail folder and view them without a problem.
Since this wasn't my computer, I'm not sure if anyone tried to change account settings, but not as far as I know. They just said it happened about 2-3 weeks ago.
Thank you for your help. I guess it's going to be one of those computer things that you don't know why it happened, but at least I know what I did that seems to have fixed it.

  • Both inbox and outbox from Gmail ends up in my gmail/pop/mail inbox

Both inbox and outbox from Gmail ends up in my gmail/pop/mail inbox; how to resolve?
    - So: the mail I send via gmail comes also in my inbox of mail in which I use the gmail pop account.
    Please help!

This is a Gmail issue. Gmail POP access doesn’t work like a normal POP mail server would. Here are some of its idiosyncrasies:
    1. Messages downloaded by any conventional POP mail client are marked as downloaded at the server (but not as read on the web), and no longer available to either the same or any other POP mail client.
    2. To make already downloaded messages available for POP access again, you must go to Gmail’s Settings > Forwarding and POP page, select Enable POP for all mail, and click Save Changes, which causes everything (and I mean everything) still on the server to be downloaded again.
    3. The Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove copy from server settings have absolutely no effect on the messages stored on Gmail’s server. Gmail ignores any requests to delete messages from the server made by a POP client. What happens to the messages on the server after a POP client has downloaded them is determined by Gmail’s Settings > Forwarding and POP > When messages are accessed with POP setting alone. In the case of Gmail (and only in that case), I recommend turning OFF Remove copy from server in Mail, so that Mail doesn’t even try to remove any messages from the server, regardless of whether you do actually want already downloaded messages to be removed from the server after some time or not.
    4. Messages sent using the web interface will be downloaded by your POP mail client as if they were received messages. Although this may seem weird, it's good because it allows archiving all messages locally in Mail, regardless of how they were sent — as long as you don't access the same Gmail account with more than one POP mail client, that is. You can set up a rule in Mail to automatically route those messages to the appropriate Sent mailbox (or to any other mailbox for that matter) if that's what you want.
    5. Messages sent using a POP/SMTP mail client such as Mail are also treated as if they were incoming messages for POP purposes, just as in #4. What prevents them from being downloaded is that Gmail marks them as already downloaded immediately. Since they’re on the server nonetheless, already sent messages would be downloaded together with all the other messages on the server if proceeding as described in #2.
    6. A particular case of #5 are messages sent to yourself. Instead of putting a copy of the sent message in the server’s Inbox and making it available for download, both the sent and the “received” message on the server are actually one and the same, and hence, cannot be downloaded via POP for the reason explained in #5.
    7. Gmail allows POP accounts to be set up in a special way that avoids some of these issues while introducing others. If you only need POP access to the last 30 days of mail, you can configure Mail in “recent mode”, as described in How should I use POP on mobile or multiple devices?, i.e. by typing “recent:” (including the colon but not the quotes) at the beginning of the User Name field (not in the Email Address field) in Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Account Information. Configuring the account this way would allow Mail to download messages marked by Gmail as already downloaded (and download messages sent to yourself in particular), but it would also cause all sent messages (not just messages sent to yourself or through webmail) to be downloaded as if they were received messages.

  • I have created a new (alias) email address specifically for general emails (shopping, etc). I was expecting it to pop up in Mail, Inbox next to my existing .mac account. It's not there so where do I find it?

Aliases are merely another address within the same account, you won't see additional groups of settings for them. You should however see them as an option in the pull down "From" menu when you create an email.

  • Post-data reco/new HD inst., Mail Inbox now "ReadOnly" *&* no msgs. visible

Hello - My old HD crashed/died last week, and after having data recovery done, new HD installed, and transfer of old materials to new settings, all seems to work fine on computer - except - my Mail Inbox. All other mailboxes visible, w/all messages from pre-crash in them, but the Inbox has two problems: 1) when Mail opens, title shows "Inbox (Read Only)", and 2) there are no messages visible in Inbox. There should be some in Inbox, both from pre-crash, and from current downloads, b/c when Mail is opened, you can see the status bar saying it's downloading mail, but it all goes somewhere mysterious. With help of computer shop pro, I looked all over computer to find inbox content but couldn't locate it. I use this for business, so having to rely on web-based interface for e-mail is slowly killing me.

Hi - proceeding with next steps....
you need to do File > Get Info (⌘I) on it and
change the name there. Otherwise, the Finder just
hides the extension from your view instead of
    renaming the file.
OK - did that - worked like a charm. The file became a folder, at least acc. to its icon, once I dropped the extension. Tried the Import function again, and this time it allowed me to highlight/choose it - but response was "Error: No valid (null) files were found."
Note, however, that the real problem could be the
size of the mbox file within the
    INBOX.mbox package, which you haven’t
    reported.
You're right - because I didn't know the size (or more precisely, didn't know how to tell the size). But I just figured out I should do Command I, and so acc. to that, the size of < .mbox > (in the newly-renamed INBOX folder, the old INBOX.mbox now on my desktop) is 1.4MB. Just in case this info is needed, the size of the < Incoming_Mail > file in the folder is 52.6MB, and the size of the whole folder is 54.5MB.
In any case, DON’T delete the old INBOX.mbox.
There are more things to try if you cannot import
your old messages directly into Mail.
    I figured as much.
At the very least, you could use a text editor to look at the
contents of the mbox file where your messages
    are stored.
If that means clicking directly on those files, I did, and it read like, well, a lot of programming language that I don't understand, though I did see some recognizable text interspersed throughout.
As to the subject of the posts, as long as it
describes the issue being discussed, I wouldn’t
change it unless there is a mistake you want to fix.
OK - thanks for clearing that up.
As I've been writing this, I check back to the Import command - which once I clicked "Okay" to the Error message, I assumed would quit. But in fact, its wheel still spinning, I clicked on the forward arrow, and lo and behold, the mbox dumped all its contents into my current Mail program! When the download was completed, I got a message saying there'd be an "mbox" folder in the "On Your Mac" mailbox - which oddly enough, I did not see (it used to be there but is no longer visible, if at all existent). No matter - there is now an "Import" mailbox listed amongst all the others, and in that were two sub-mailboxes: "Incoming Mail" -- empty; and "mbox," full with everything I'd been looking for.
So - at the end of it all - thank you and thank you again for all your help. Never thought Barcelona would be the answer to my data reco problems.
    best wishes,
    Julie

  • Can't Get Mail Inbox Window Back

I'm posting this for a co-worker....she pushed the Mail Inbox window all the way to the right and up and now she can't get it back. She's restarted but still nothing is bringing it back. Also played with the resolution and it's at the maximum, so there's no making it bigger. Any suggestions would be great...thanks! She has a G4 and is running Panther.
    G4   Mac OS X (10.3.8)
mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Those settings are stored in the preferences file. If you cannot figure out how to solve the problem in Mail, you may try re-creating that file:
    1. If you have a .Mac account and .Mac synchronization of Mail data is enabled either in Mail > Preferences > General or in System Preferences > .Mac, disable it before proceeding.
    2. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    3. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this fixes the problem).
    5. Open Mail. You’ll have to set up your non-.Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
You’ll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
You may also need to re-install or re-enable any Mail plug-ins you have installed for Mail to recognize them.
    6. As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
    7. If the problem is fixed now and .Mac synchronization of Mail data was enabled at the beginning, enable it again, go to System Preferences > .Mac > Advanced, click Reset Sync Data, and choose the appropriate options to reset the Mail data stored on the .Mac server with the data locally stored on the computer, i.e. sync data must flow from the computer to the .Mac server.
BTW, if the system in question is Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther), it would have been more appropriate to discuss this in the Mail & Address Book - Mac OS X 10.3 & earlier forum. If the discussion applies to both Mail 1.x and Mail 2.x, it doesn’t really matter, but it’s difficult to know that in advance.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

I keep trying to update my mail inbox but keep being told connection to the server has failed.

Quit the maill app completely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Or go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Your email account >Mail>Off. Restart the iPad and go back to settings and turn mail on again and see if that works.
Or try this as well ....Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
