Mail-incoming mail server

I want to set my hotmail to come through mail but i don't know what to put for my incoming mail server. do i put hotmail.com, @hotmail.com??? i don't know anything would be appreciated.. thanks

Typically mail server names are of the type 'mail.serviceprovider.com' or 'incoming.serviceprovider.com' or some such, but I'm not aware that Hotmail make these servers directly available to POP, the mail protocol that the mail application is MacOS (and indeed, most mail software) uses.
Last I heard, it was necessary to add a component to mail to allow it to access hotmail. One such is at http://sourceforge.net/projects/httpmail-plugin/

• Mail 'incoming mail' password problems

Hi everyone, I wonder if anyone can help with the settings in Apple mail on my G5 OSX 10.5.8?
I have recently opened a new email account but I am having difficulty with the settings in 'mail' I have set everything correctly but my 'incoming password' set on my G5 desktop is being declined. I have used the same settings on my G4 laptop, and my Mac pro with some difficulty but I got there in the end. I have also set it up on my iphone 4s without any problems. But my G5 no matter how many times I try, which is several, refuses point blank! I have tried both POP and IMAP, different servers advised by my web hosts, but all to no avail. I have had some limited success where it allows it for a few emails/moments both ways but then refuses. Also I have been able to send emails without a problem, but not able to receive. I have obviously checked all the settings numerous times, and they have been checked and agreed with by the web host. The problem appears to be the 'incoming password', which I have also tried changing for the email account. For some reason my G5 seems to be just sending the wrong password? I'm not sure if this can be an encryption problem? I have other email accounts on this computer and they are all working fine. I have tried deleting the 'keychain access' for the account and starting afresh, and even tried using a different keyboard to type in the password, to no avail? I did not have an easy time setting the G4 (OSX 10.5.8) and the Mac Pro (OSX 10.6.8) but they are working okay now. If I use the Outlook Web App on the same computer it logs on no problem. It is the apple 'mail' on the G5 OSX 10.5.8 which is causing the problem. I am drawing a blank on this one and would be grateful for any advice? Thanks.

Create a New User Account, and as that New User try to set up this one account -- as it is POP, set to leave messages on the server after download. If not familiar with setting up a New User Account, see:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8235.html
This will be a useful test, and is not meant to suggest a permanent switch to the New User Account, but rather a test of the Mail application outside of your normal User Account.
Also in System Preferences/Networks click on Advanced, then Proxies and make sure no proxy selections have been checked.

• Cannot Send Y!Mail through Mail Please Help!

Hi, I've tried everything on the Yahoo help page but I still can't send mail through my Mac mail client but I can receive mails. I tried to use these settings
My Yahoo! Mail address (karty18 (at) yahoo (dot) com)
Here are the basic server settings for Yahoo! Mail:
Incoming Mail (POP3) Server: plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com (Use SSL, port: 995)
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server: plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com (Use SSL, default port: 25, 465, 587, use authentication)
Account Name/Login Name: Your Yahoo! Mail ID (karty18)
Password: My Yahoo! Mail password (yes, my password is correct)
Still it doesn't work. I also tried the outgoing mail server: "Yahoo! SMTP Server" still no luck.
And finally I tried to use custom port 587 just incase my IP is blocking port 465... no luck still. and for some reason when I select either outgoing server, it says offline in parenthesis but my mail accounts are all online (weird).
I can receive mail alright but I cannot send. Please help me. I don't know what else to do from here. Thanks much.

Some might find this useful.
If you have a .co.uk address with Yahoo instead of .com, you can retrieve and send mail via the mail app using a free yahoo account.
I have been doing this for years.

When trying to update my Mail Account Mailbox Behaviours settings, after making the changes when I try to close the settings pane the following messages occur: Invalid Incoming Mail Server The “Incoming Mail Server” field cannot be empty. The incoming mail server box has in light grey colour: p02-imap.mail.me.com in it and I cannot edit its content. Any ideas what is going on and how to fix it?

Hi all,
Mattreichenbach is probably on the right track here with a reset of settings.  I think I've determined the issue has to do with cached account information and inconsistencies for the account name.  This seems to crop up when I've changed my password and it hasn't propagated fully to all the servers, devices, certificates, etc.
Hopefully many here are on their way to restoration of service by now but it's clear that a lot of people are having the same issues.  Very frustrating and definitely something Apple needs to resolve:  incoming mail server field grayed out, incorrect autopopulation of different fields, other unanticipated behaviors.  If you're still having issues, though, here's what worked for me...
First, head to the iCloud preferences pane in System Configuration and choose "Sign Out".  When I did this it prompted me with a number of "are you sure" type questions about retaining information on my local machine.  I chose to delete/remove the info each time simply because it should all be restored by the cloud and I didn't want to risk a massive duplication of my data... I will say, I'm back up and running with no issues so I suspect you can make the same delete/remove choices...  But use your own judgment.  I don't want you to lose any data (ie.. please use care as you do this because I cannot bear the thought of causing anyone to experience the pain of data loss).
Once you've signed out of iCloud, restart your system.  When you get back in, head to the Mail, Contacts and Calendars section of your System Preferences and add your account back by choosing the brushed aluminum "iCloud" button.  When it asks for your account name, use your @iCloud.com email address.  I am all but certain my issue had started because one of my devices (iPhone or whatever) had been set up with an email alias specified instead of my @iCloud.com address.
Apple, if you're reading through any of these issues (there are TONS of users having this same problem).  Take note, that your icloud service somewhat frequently is not responding and yet tells the user that the password is wrong and this prompts people to be changing their passwords unnecessarily.  This has happened to me on numerous occasions.  Also, I noticed that last week's outage corresponded to a VERY similar outage exactly one year ago to the day.  Sounds like planned maintenance to me and I think you could do a better job notifying folks so we're not wasting HUGE amounts of time troubleshooting a problem that we have no hope of fixing.
Hope that helps some of you!

• Error in setting icloud mail on iMac - 'incoming mail server'

I created a new mail account in icloud and cannot edit this account in Mail Preferences on my iMac.  Everytime I try to save my changes i get the following error:
"The incoming mail server filed cannot be empty."
Of course the field is automatically filled in and greyed out so it is not changable.
I have tried various fixes, deleting, setting up again, setting up the iCloud and Mail/etc. in System Preferences...
Help!

Hi Suebadu,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I know that it can be frustrating when an email account, such as your Gmail accounts, are not working as you would expect. In this situation I would recommend reading over and working through the attached article. The Connection Doctor may provide some further information as to what is causing the errors.

• Exchange Server 2010: Incoming mail not delivered

I have an Exchange Server 2010 Standard with all recent patches and updates.
-It has been in service for 3 years without any issues.
-There is plenty of hard drive space for the logs and the data (over 100GB in each)
-The current size of the mail database is 150GB
-There is no registry entry in place limiting the size of the database (Database Size Limit in GB as outlined here
Starting a few days ago, incoming mail is reaching the server but not being delivered to user mailboxes. Internal mail works fine when this happens. Looking at the Queue Viewer doesn't show anything abnormal. The Submission Queue shows nothing.
It is only after I reboot the Exchange Server that the Submission queue will show all the messages waiting to be delivered and they will all be delivered successfully after the reboot. The event logs do not show any error messages.
The server will continue to run fine for a few hours and then the problem starts all over again.
What could be causing this?

Any 3rd party antivirus/anti-spam software installed on the server? If so, disable and test.

• TS3988 The correct information in the email address, Full name and Incoming mail server panes are greyed out, and I can get no further in bring my iCloud a/c online. Any ideas? Thanks.

I've just updated and installed Mountain Lion. I've clicked for iCloud for Mail. The correct information in the email address, Full name and Incoming mail server panes are greyed out, and I can get no further in bring my iCloud a/c online. Any ideas? Thanks.

They are grayed out because they are automatically set up whey you check Mail in System Preferences.  If you didn't do that, go back and do so and your iCloud email account will be set up automatically.

• HT201320 What am i supposed to put as the incoming mail server and the outgoing mail server when setting up my email?

I'm tryingt to set up my email through my school account and i'm not sure what it means when i'm asked to enter a incoming mail server and an outgoing mail server. Help would be appreciated thanks

Since no one here has any idea about what type of mail your school offers...you don't mention what school...your question, as asked, can't be answered. What don't you contact your school's IT dept., or look online. Most schools have instructions on how to do so online.

What host name do I use for Hotmail incoming mail server?

Access the homescreen and tap "Settings."
Go to "Mail, Contacts, and Calendars" and tap "Add Account." Your iPhone should display a list of email service providers. Even though you are setting up a Hotmail account, you will be doing it first through Gmail on your iPhone. Tap the Gmail icon to create a new account. Enter your name and a user name and password for the new Hotmail account you will be making later. Enter "imap.gmail.com" in the "HostName" column. Press the "Save" button at the upper right corner of the screen.
Enter your name, email address, password, and the description of the account. Next, click "Save." You should now be able to check your email from the homescreen.
Enter "smtp.gmail.com" in the "Outgoing Mail Server." Enter the password for this Gmail account in the "Password" column. Enter user name for this Gmail account in the "UserName" column. Press the "Save" button at the upper right corner of the screen. Press the "Home" button to return to the iPhone's home screen.
Use the Web browser to go to Hotmail.com and create a new account. Use the user name and password for the account that you entered into the Gmail account on the iPhone earlier. Click on “Settings” after the account has been created.
Click on the "Settings" tab. Click on the "Forwarding" tab. Click on the "Pop/IMAP" tab and select "Enable IMAP." Click on the "Save” button. Click on “Settings” and select “Accounts” and then “Add Another Email Address” from the webpage. Enter the name of your existing Hotmail account in the column. Press “Save.”
Go to the inbox. Open the message from Gmail and click on the link in the message box. Select the “Options” tab and check the “Forwarding email” box.
Send yourself a message to your Hotmail account from an email client. Click on the icon of the Mail program at the bottom of the iPhone’s screen. The email you sent to Hotmail will appear in the inbox of the Gmail account in the iPhone's email.

• What do I put in the boxes for incoming mail server, what do I put in the boxes for incoming mail server

I am trying to set up my email.  I have an email account from work.  What goes in the "Incoming Mail Server" information boxes?

It depends on your work's mail server - it would be unique to them. I'd ask someone in your firm's IT department, or someone else from work who has set it up on an iPhone/iPad. If you have another way of getting email at home, you could look in the settings of your email device to find it.

• What do i put in the Incoming Mail Server...?

I have Road Runner and I dont know what to put in the Incoming Mail Server box...any ideas...?

Contact RoadRunner or check it's help web site for the server addresses. There should be a POP server and an SMTP server for POP mail. For IMAP mail (I don't know if they support this format) there will be an incoming mail and outgoing mail server (the outgoing mail server is usually the same as the SMTP server.)

I can't receive my incoming mail in Mac Mail. ESP is yahoo.  Error msg says unable to connect with POP server.  Any solution?  I am able to get my incoming messages via yahoo website but not through the Mail app.

Try this, if it is not the correct department, ask them for the number or to be transfered..
Call 1-800-318-0612 for Login Help
Also on most autmated systems, if you hit 00000, or ##### you can sometimes get thru to a person.
Is Yahoo your Internet provider? Do you have  a local provider? ei:AT&T, SBC,  cable co, check who you make your check or epatment to...etc, If so I would start there, but if no joy go to the "Mothership"
I may be wrong about this, (it's been a long time now) I may have deleted my mail account from Mail (after writing down all the info from all General/accounts, and the rest of the tabs, and then added a new account using my existing email address, and it may have "walked me thru the rest of the proceedure".
But like I said it was a long time ago 3-4 years, but that may have been the path I ended up taking, make sure to write all the info down in case you need to re-enter it all manually. Then try calling them.
All the best

I updated my iPad 3 and lost one of my e-mail accounts...my @hotmail.com account is still showing up but my @me.com account is gone and I cannot figure out how to get it back on there. Specifically in the incoming mail server part...host name? Please help! I use this email for my business account.

Try this configuration assistant for iPad:

If setting up your ".me" account fails starting with "Other" in the assistant, then try iCloud and see if that helps.
