Mail indexing problem

Hello,
I have a problem with indexing my email. I have 7 accounts. every working perfect except one.
I have every day about 20-30 mails. inbox and outbox. but suddenly (with out any restart of computer) it start to show only last message and one month ago.
I deleted all index files (envelope) in ~/Library/Mail/V2 but nothing happened. Mail program did reindexing but still one month old.
so firstly when was indexing it was like 13 000 mails. after i retried delete envelope files from indexing. and it shows 6000 mail. Free space on hart didn't appear or disappear. it the same like yesterday. (so hope mails are still on hard drive) But how to restore them?

Try rebuilding the mailbox of the account you are having problems with. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.

  • How I solved my Spotlight+ Mail indexing problem

OK, so I thought I would post my solution to a stubborn indexing problem, for people who may have the same issue (and it does seem many people do).
Problem: Spotlight index was unreliable. In particular, Spotlight was terrible at indexing mail. It could not find the messages by content that it would find by searching the "from" field, nor could it find those reliably. Unusable.
    What DID NOT work:
-- adding and removing any folder whatsoever in the Privacy preferences of Spotlight. The index would rebuild, but with the same problems.
-- doing this via terminal (e.g, using sudo mdutil -E /Volumes/MyHardDisk)
    -- using Onyx
    -- using Spotless
    -- simply reinstalling the system
-- manually modifying the plist files inside the .spotlight folder to add and remove the folders that would not get indexed.
    What DID work:
-- first, I reinstalled the system. That's not such a big deal. Upgrade up to 10.4.6
-- then, I authorized the root user (that's probably not necessary) (this, you do by using Netinfo manager)
-- Then, I deactivated the index (via terminal:
    sudo mdutil -i off /Volumes/MyHardDisk
-- now the tricky part. This concerns Mail, in particular.
I have a very complex mail folder (tens of thousands of messages). I noticed that inside each mail folder, I had two things that were not supposed to be there
    1. a copy of each folder.mbox which was empty, but with the same name without the extension .mbox. This is probably something that was created while importing mail from Panther to Tiger, for what I can tell.
    2. Most importantly, a file named ".index.ready". This also, apparently, was an old legacy coming from Panther. I suspect this was the main problem for the lack of indexing in Mail.
Ok, so... I deleted these folders and files. If you have a complex structure of subfolders, you can delete the files with an Unix command by first cd to your mail folder, and then use
    find . -name \.index.r* -ok rm {} \;
which will ask you confirmation before deleting each file.
It was faster to remove the empty subfolders by hand, as they all had different names.
-- Ok, at this point, I erased entirely the .Spotlight-V100 directory which stays at the root of your computer. You can do it with a rmdir command from the terminal or, as I did, you can login as root (remember, we activated root), use a utility that allows you to see hidden files (e.g., Tinkertool), and move it manually to the trash folder.
Then I emptied the trash. For superstition, I restarted, and let the index be built again (that took about 5 hours in my computer, for an HD with about 60 gb occupied on it).
Now everything seems to work perfectly fine. I don't know whether this procedure can be shortened, but I do know that nothing else worked for me. I thought I would post it here as I spent sooo much time to solve this problem, and furthermore, I found that none of the suggested solutions would work.
OK, your responsibility to do it, if you want to do it. Hope nobody needs to!
    Best to you all,
    l.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Lucabo! Using ideas from your post, I also (at least for now) solved my Mail indexing problem. One day (not even after an upgrade) Mail just quit finding messages by content, even when I had open a message with that content!
    What I did:
-- In System Preferences, told Spotlight to index only Mail (I just use grep from a Terminal window for everything else!)
-- Ensured Mail app wasn't running
-- Backed up my Library/Mail folder to an external disk
-- Turned off indexing via Terminal (after sudo sh), with
    mdutil -i off /Volumes/MyHardDisk
-- Deleted old files in my mailboxes (inside the whatever.mbox folders):
    .index.ready
    mbox
    tableofcontents
    content_index
It was clear that mbox, tableofcontents, and content_index were left over from a previous version of mail - they hadn't been accessed since I upgraded.
Note that I didn't delete the whatever.mbox folders (just the plain mbox file inside)!
-- Deleted (in Terminal) the .Spotlight-V100 in the root directory
-- Restarted my Mac. The indexing started itself. Since I had it set up to index only Mail, it took about 3-ish hours to finish (I have 100s of 1000s of emails in thousands of folders).
After the indexing finished, all the test searches that I tried worked. From now on I will always be suspicious if search doesn't find anything!
Also, I just checked - using the Spotlight field on the menu bar now works better too. When the Mail search problem showed up, I tried using the Spotlight field and the Spotlight window, but they would just flash up a few items, remove the list, over and over, sometimes with the beachball, then finally settle to an empty list. Now the Spotlight field seems to work.
I infer that the Spotlight index gets corrupted, and that the Spotlight code doesn't notice that it's reading junk from the index...
BTW, about the same time that search quit working, some emails in my Inboxes got highlighted with a dark brown background color. Have no idea why. They aren't marked as Junk (the junk messages have the text in the usual lighter brown). But, when I select a message with the dark brown highlight, mark it as junk, then mark it as not junk, the dark brown highlight goes away. On some occasions, just quitting Mail and restarting makes the dark brown highlights go away - but not always. Sigh... at least it's not a show stopper, even if it is ugly!
Thanks again, Lucabo, for your post!

  • Can't open Mail, Index is broken!

    Hi, I need some help.
I don't use Mail on my iMac or Macbook Pro Retina but need it to run some AppleScripts, so I tried to open it on my Macbook Pro Retina and iMac but can't open it on either, it just comes up with the below:
    First:
To use the new features in Mail, your existing Mail messages need to be imported into the new version the first time you use Mail. this might take a few minutes. You won't be able to use Mail until the import is finished.
Click Continue to import your messages now, or click Cancel to import later.
If you click cancel, it just closes and if you click continue it does the below:
    The Upgrade Failed
An error occurred during the upgrade. Click continue to launch the Mail Import Assistant, which will help you create a new library and import your existing messages.
So I then click continue and this is what appears:
You Mail Index has been damaged. To repair it, quit Mail.
Mail will repair the index the next time you open Mail. Your mailboxes and messages will be preserved.
So I then click Quit. It shuts down and then if you try to open it again, it just does the same thing again and again.
I have managed to fix the one on my Macbook Pro Retina by following what some people suggested on other posts, what worked was deleting the com.apple.mail folder inside Library/Containers. And I haven't had a problem since but with the iMac once this file is deleted, it allows you to go through the whole set up for a new account and then goes into the same error pattern as mentioned above. I have also tried deleting the Envelope Index inside Library/Mail/V2/Mail Data and in the Mail folder too, but nothing seems to work.
Can someone please adivse as to how I can re set my Mail, there is nothing in there so it can be rebooted or something like that. I just don't understand why I have managed to fix in one computer and not in the other one !!
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Sally

    Quit Mail. Then select
     ▹ Force Quit...
from the menu bar. A small window will open with a list of running applications. Mail may appear in that list, even though you quit it. If so, select it and press return. Close the window.
In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
    Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. Move the following items from the folder that opens to the Trash (some may not exist):
    Caches/com.apple.mail
    Saved Application State/com.apple.mail.savedState
    Application Support/AddressBook/MailRecents-v4.abcdmr
    Containers/com.apple.mail
    Mail
    Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (OS X 10.7 only)
    Preferences/com.apple.mail.searchhistory.plist (OS X 10.7 only)
Note: you are not moving the Mail application. You’re moving a folder named “Mail.”
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail. It will behave as if you were running it for the first time. Go through the setup process with one of your accounts.

  • Damaged Mail Index in Lion

I just downloaded Lion OS X the other night with few difficulties (aside from my attempts to get used to the new gestures), until I attempted to check my email using Mail. I'm importing a few different POP accounts, and after the importing of my messages, it tells me that the upgrade failed, and tells me that ,"Your Mail index has been damaged. To repair it, quit Mail." I've looked into the problem and saw fixes like:
    1) delete the Envelope Index files (~/Library/Mail ) and reopen mail (didn't work)
    and
    2) delete the com.apple.mail.plist file (~/Library/Preferences) and reopen mail (which also didn't work).
Not only did these fail to fix Mail, but they actually succeeded in making things worse. Now when I open mail, instead of importing 4417 emails, it only imports 3263 emails. I'm hoping that they aren't permantly lost.
Is anyone else having this issue? Does anyone have a fix for this? I would be extremely surprised if Apple decided to release a new OS which doesn't play nicely with a pre-installed app (which I was excited to use with all of the fancy new features they tout).
    Thanks!
    ~Austen

May I advise you to ask this question or see if it has been asked in the Lion discussion community?  Just a thought since I have no idea -Ken

  • Mail index damaged repeatedly

I've been trying to use Apple Mail with my Gmail and Google Apps accounts, both using IMAP. Everything has been working fine, except now at least twice idea I get message telling me that the Mail index has been damaged. I need to quit Mail and import old messages. Beyond this annoyance, it's a pain because I have to re-download a very large archive of messages from my Gmail account.
I tried deleting the old Envelope Index files but that hasn't done any good.

i'm having exactly the same problem. it started yesterday. just now mail suddenly said the index was damaged and it needed to import it all again. it imported, then restarted. mail barely finished starting before it said it was corrupt again. . .

  • Mail index corruption

    Need help on this.
Wife's MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.8 was giving a lot of mail trouble: not connecting with ISP, freezing, and just general contankerous.  We tried several thing such as permissions, defrag, and diskwarrior, etc.
We then upgraded to10.8.4 but still have a problem with mail.  Mail opening process finds at attempts to import saved mail data but final window warning states mail index error.  Next window states quit and reopen Mail to fix indexing.
We have an Index.sproduct in the Mac OS X Install Data.  According to the file info, it was created when we installed OS 10.8.4.
Problem is that that does not happen.  Still cannot open Mail 6.5.

Out of interest to everyone, it's great to know the solution to this problem is readily available.
I had this problem with an iMac when upgrading from 10.6.8 to Yosemite.
I must have tried 6 times to do this rebuild/reindex without success until...
    - I found I had files stored in 2 places : /mail and v2/maildata
For me it was necessary to:
    1. Remove all the imap accounts from both places
    2. Remove envelope index and associated files as explained elsewhere from both places.
Once that was done, hey presto! It rebuilt very quickly.
Thanks to everyone who takes time to contribute. When it's all going pear-shaped these discussion help enormously.
These two conversations helped me also:

  • Why repeated "Your Mail index has been damaged" errors?

In my Mail.app (running on a white MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard) I frequently (sometimes daily) get the "Your Mail index has been damaged. To repair it, quit Mail." messages. Either letting the system repair or just Force Quit & restarting then I'm away again, but only for a few hours or days.
Any ideas how to debug what's causing this? It's making Mail totally unusable.
I use IMAP for about 5 accounts with this app. I don't have any problems with other Mail clients.
    Thanks, Michael

  • Your mail index has been damaged

I recently upgraded my I-max to Yosemite.  Now my email is not working.   Says" Your mail index has been damaged.  To repair it, quit mail.  Your mail boxes and messages will be preserved".

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Launch Mail. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Mail index unable to load

    Greetings all,
I am having problems opening my mail app on my macbook pro.
unable to load my mail index, it will just lagged and hang after a moment.
    Please advise.
    Thank you

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the text on the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is corrupt and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • "Mail index is damaged"

New problem.....When opening mail, I get the message "Mail index is damaged. Quit program and mail will repair index when re-opened." The only option at that point is to hit the quit button.
When I then open mail again, there is no repair/rebuild, and the same dialog box opens. So at present my Mac Mail program is unusable.
    Any thoughts?

This yields two separate errors and does not fix the problem:(

  • Z-index problems in IE6

i managed to get IE6 to use z-indexes and layer properly..
everything that is except form elements specifically combo boxes
    appear above my dropdown menus...??

This is not a z-index problem. It's due to the way that combo
    elements are
drawn to the screen. There are only two solutions that I know
    of -
    1. Redesign the form so that there is no conflict, or
    2. Hack the menu code so that the combo element is hidden
    when the menu is
    opened.

Safari and Firefox Mac have very broken and slightly broken

  • Your mail index has been damaged. should I delete all of my Envelope Index files?

When I attempt to launch mail, it begins by telling me that I need to import messages. Then it says upgrading mail database, then migrating data, then upgrade failed, click continue to launch mail assistant. When you click on that, the next message that comes up is your mail index has been damaged and will be fixed the next time Mail launches, only it doesn't. I go through the entire process again. Someone last night said something about deleting the Envelope Index files. Should I get rid of all of them? The person mentioned 3 of the files (Envelope Index, Envelope Index-wal, Envelope Index-shm), but I have 15 files altogether.

I should add that several of the Envelope Index files are in two different places; the bulk are in Library/Mail/V2-Temp.noindex/MailData/, the rest are in Library/Mail/
