Mail is a consistent pain

is it possible to simply delete mail from osx or get it back to its default settings before i tried to use it.
Personally..i don't wat to spend anymore time trying fixes..i'm happy to use email through a browser. I think its simply too much trouble.

You can delete all the mail boxes if you don't want all your old emails hanging around, but as Csound1 said, you should leave the app itself alone (nothing to stop you dragging it off the Dock of course).

  • Mail constantly and consistently crashes

About a month ago, and in somewhat close proximity to an update to Snow Leopard, Mail began to crash. I can include the crash report here if anyone thinks that will help. I have tried it intermittently since then and it is consistent. If I delete the preferences, then it will load and I can access my old archived files but the minute I add any account other than MobileMe, it begins crashing. One account is an imap account with my University and the other is my work account on exchange server 07. I am running Snow Leopard, 10.6.3. Does anyone have any thoughts on this one? I now have to use Entourage, which is very inconvenient. Thanks in advance.

    John,
Create a New User Account, and as that New User try to set up the university IMAP account. If not familiar with setting up a New User Account, see:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8235.html
This will be a useful test, and it not meant to suggest a permanent switch to the New User Account, but rather a test of the Mail application outside of your normal User Account.

  • Mail send / receive is painfully slow - whereas my iPad is instant

    Hi
Does anyone know what can cause mail to run so slow.
I have a .Mac (.Me) account and it seems to take an age for mail to send or receive new emails.
When I use my iPad on the same Internet connection it is instant.
If anyone has an idea on how I can fix this or tools for trouble shooting I'd be grateful.
    Cheers
    Scott

  • Why are my E mail contacts not consistent? Telus advises that it may be a firefox problem.

This problem is being investigated by Telus. My first concern is the loss of E mail contacts. Telus advises that they show up at their office but they do not show up on my E mail accessed thru Firefox. Also, while using E mail I have to re enter my user name and password every 3-5 minutes. I have been in communication with the Telus Technical people and they are investigating the issue; however one of their advisors suggested I contact you. The phone number they gave me, 888-586-4539 does not work from my area. 403-293-6291. Please advise.

  • My "replied to" flag in Mail is not consistently set

Running Yosemite and Mail 8.1.  Recently I've noticed that my little grey "replied to" arrow flag is not set properly after I have indeed replied to a mail message.  Sometimes it is, but most often it is not. However, I can't discern any kind of pattern to those that successfully receive the flag vs. not.  Any ideas?

I ran into the same problem with only some messages (if any at all) showing up in the searches in Mail. For an example, I have over 100 messages from Netflix within all my mail folders (trash included) but when I search for anything containing "netflix" it would only pull up 2 messages from my trash folder on two random dates. This was the case for ANY searches I was trying to pull up, not just for netflix emails.
I spoke to an iOS Senior Advisor who did a screen share with me (because he had never heard of the problem previously) and after reviewing the issue, he said he will be taking this up to the engineers.
Here is what fixed the problem for me:
    1. Enable Indexing
Open Terminal, and type the following:  sudo mdutil -i on /
If it asks for your password, type it in and hit return.
Re-open mail. If this didn't fix anything, then you will need to re-index:
    2. Re-indexing HD
Go to System Preferences, Spotlight, click on the Privacy tab, click on the + to add the entire Macintosh HD to the list of "Prevent spotlight from searching these locations" and then remove the Macintosh HD by clicking the - button.
Once you've done this is will automatically start re-indexing in spotlight. This took about 90 minutes on my computer, but once it was done, I re-opened mail and it was working properly again.
If you still run into issues, I've heard that in Mail, clicking on "Mailbox" then "Rebuild" can sometimes fix the issue. Let me know if any of those steps worked for you!

  • Mail.app crashes on launch consistently

Up until yesterday, my upgrade to Mountain Lion had been completely smooth.  Today when I launch mail, it crashes consistently on thread 0.  So I did the Windows rule of rebooting first off.  no joy
I tried restoring the app via Time Machine and it crashes as well so the problem cause remains unknown.
I have tried this with iCloud sync both on and off and also tried resetting sync services since this used to be a fix in the old days with Lion and Snow Leopard although I think it no longer applies with iCloud.
I've also tried removing the envelope index files and even all the plist files but the app does not launch long enough or far enough to get there.
I've also done a Repair disk permissions and while it found tons of faults, mostly in the printers area, this did not resolve the issue.
At this point, Mail is unusable which is a major pain in the ***.  if anyone has solutions, I'd appreciate hearing.
    Ross

I'm having the same problem as JadedEye.   Mail.app worked just fine yesterday, but now I can't get it to launch.
I've tried your suggestion, hpr3, to use Safe Mode.   No luck.
    Other things I've tried:
    1. Using recovery partition, repaired disk - no problems
    2. Using recovery partition, repaired permissions - nothing that looked as if it were related.
    3. Tried restoring Mail.app through Time Machine
    4. Tried restoring entire ~/Library/Mail folder from yesterday
    5. Tried deleting Mail Envelope files
    6. Tried removing entire ~/Library/Mail and ~/Library/Mail Downloads folders
    7. Tried deleting preferences files -- only one I found was com.apple.mail.plist.lockfile
NONE of these things has made any difference.  I would re-install Mail.app, if I could find an installer package anywhere.

  • Troubleshooting Mail using the Mail.crash.log file and TN2123 CrashReporter

This morning, for apparently no reason at all, Mail began to consistently crash each time I attempted to send or reply to a message. By observing what occured in mail, opening the crash log [mail.crash.log] located here…
    Macintosh HD:Users:<username>:Library:Logs:CrashReporter
…and parsing the information with the help of the Apple Developer Technical Note linked below, I was able to quickly determine that my last action just prior to sending the message—appending a signature to it—resulted in the application crashing. Simply by deleting the existing signature and recreating it, I was able to resolve the problem in only a matter of minutes.
This demonstrates how useful crash logs can be, and why they should likely be the very first place you look for an indication of trouble when an application unexpectely quits.
Here is a very short, relevent section of my Mail crash log which you can examine using the instructions linked below:

  • How can I stop apple mail from autosaving drafts?

    Hello all,
I have finally got myself a new computer and been immersed in the "new" way- my old mac was a bit like a volkswagen beetle, old and cranky but very efficient.
This new interlaced madness is proving to be very confusing on many levels but here I will state one problem I am seeking a solution to:
Apple mail autosaves  a copy of my email reply drafts every 30 seconds in my apple mail draft folder. - This means many copies are saved!!!
    How do I stop this?
The reason I ask this is for the following reasons:
1- If I don't send my reply after 30 seconds I have to manually delete the drafts.- I didn't know this until I was doing a little organising and have realised that I have quite a few drafts of the same message lying around in my google on mac (imap) "all mail" folder and these end up taking alot of space.
2- These then get transfered to my google mail "all mail" folder and end up taking up more space.
3- Manually deleting things from my google on mac "all mail" account is a pain in the *** because I need to delete it into the googletrash on mac and not any other deleting area. (unless I do it directly from gmail) I didn't know this until I had a read through google- the "all mail" archive is another pain in the ***.
I was deleting these messages from my mac "all mail" mailbox and they just magically reappeared into the same "all mail" mailbox, meaning they are downloaded from the server continually- I hate to think how much more that adds to data roaming.
Possible solutions I have tried out:
1- uncheck the "save draft on server" box in mail;preferences;mailbox behaviour (and saving it) - I did this and tried to write a message and there it appeared as each 30 seconds passed
2- change the mac mailbox behaviour settings to gmail Imap settings for apple mail and save these- as above, I wrote a message and it still appeared in my drafts folder, new, message appearing every 30 seconds.
3- uncheck the "use idle command if server suppors it"  box in mail;preferences; accounts;advanced (as someone mentions in another forum) and the message still autosaves.
    HELP!
    1. This seems to be common with most people
    2. I am using gmail and IMAP on mac book pro 2012 10.7.4, lion
    3. This never happened with my volkswagen which was also a mac but from 2006
    4. Some people say this is Imap related. I have only noticed it with this apple mail and have read it has been happening to people since 2008.
    5. Look forward to new solutions

I'm having a similar but slightly different problem. My company just migrated to Gmail, and it's saving mail drafts every 30 seconds into my Trash folder.
I unchecked the "Show in IMAP" preference in the Gmail settings, but my Drafts folder completely disappeared. I went back and checked it and the folder reappeared (with my drafts still in there).
I like the idea if starting an email on my laptop and having the option of finishing it on my iPhone or iPad, so only saving Drafts locally would not be ideal.

No issues were created relating to Mail with the update to 10.5.6 -- all accounts (10) work as before. The version of Mail (3.5) did not change, but only the build number.
Your crash log references Mail 3.0 (912.1) -- this out-of-date by several versions and would only match up with 10.5.0. Have you moved the Mail application around so that software updates could not find to update? This alone would causes crashes and other problems.
You don't need to revert -- you need to catch up to the correct version of Mail? That would be Mail 3.5 (930.3)!

  • Mail not saving messages in Sent if previously in Drafts

This question was already posed several months ago but not really answered so I am trying it again.
I sometimes save a draft message in the draft folder only to send it later. Often it is the case that this previously saved draft does not appear in the Sent folder after being sent. I use IMAP settings and have four accounts running simultaneously. Other than in this case, mail is saved consistently in the sent folder.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Gerry

Thanks for discovering this issue being connected to drafts. I have trouble with this for a couple of months as well.
Since you assume it to be connected to "drafts", I suggest to deselect "Store draft messages on the server" for your IMAP-Account. I just did this for myself, to see if it helps, and can't give you results yet. Maybe you just wanna try simultaneously. I guess, the reason for our problem could me some messy communication between Mail and the server, where one party get's confused.
    Greetings

  • STILL need to go Offline and back Online to obtain mail

OK, several weeks later, and I have (1) used the OS X utility programs to check permissions, etc; (2) rebuilt my mailboxes; (3) deleted most stored e-mails; (5) run software update; and (?) tried other things that don't come to mind right this second, but STILL, my Mail frequently needs to be taken Offline, and then back Online for messages to appear. Lots of my mail comes from AOL accounts, but some from Apple Mail, and both suffer from this problem.
Can anyone suggest something else I can try to get e-mails automatically and consistently?
    Steven

When you say "minimum," do you mean NOT 1 minute? Recently, I changed it to 5 minutes from one, without resolving the problem.
The problem I am trying to describe/diagnose was discussed several weeks ago. I should send myself some non-AOL mails to make sure the problem is not AOL specific (most of my discussion group e-mails come via an aol account)...
Would changing the pop port and/or imap port affect this issue?

  • Stupid mail program

our workstations are all Mac, all kinds mac...we upgrade some every year, transfer mail is a huge painful job. Most of users got tons of email and many sub-folders , Mac Mail has no way to export all of them. Microsoft outlook is pretty friendly to transfer all email when upgrade PC.

Great. Thanks for sharing. Now...do you have a question, are you just whining?

  • Photo browser in Mail not working

In new mail my photo browser will not add photos even though it appears on screen when requested. Some time ago I had to replace my original photo library with a new one and I think this has caused the problem as it used to work fine. I do not know what to do to get it working again and would really appreciate any help to do so. Should I consider re-installing Leopard?

    Hi Buzz,
Hi John; Sorry that I didn't reply sooner. Been busy playing with a new toy! I got carried away here so this kind-a long!
Keep the chat coming - it made me laugh!
Well, O.K. Hmm, this will amuse you and may amaze you too! The ONLY reason I EVER had for buying a Computer was due to my mind's insatiable boredom created by my job! It's a long story but I LIVED out of my suitcase, in Hotel's/Motel's, a different Town/City every day, 6 days a week! And *I HATED IT!* I was so bored *OUT OF MY MIND*, I became an alcoholic! I didn't just get drunk every night, I STAYED drunk all day long every day! I was so good at being drunk I could FAKE being SOBER! EVERYBODY I talked to was convince that I had a speech impediment. I wanted to quit but the salary for this job was so INSANE I couldn't. The Job: K-Mart Field Auditor. The year: 1979-82! The Computer: A 1980 Tandy/Radio Shack TRS-80!
The amazing part of this story: I STILL have the Computer, it STILL works and I STILL use it! It's the ONLY Computer that I've EVER own that's SO stable it HAS never CRASHED. Unfortunately I STILL have a addiction but isn't alcohol, it's Computers! I'm SO addicted my Boss wants to commit me to a psychiatric hospital but he won't! He can't replace me! I'm the ONLY Certified Windows Professional in this city with more of years experience than all of the other CWP have been alive! I was doing 'Stuff' with my TRS-80 25 years ago that most Computers *CAN'T EVEN* do today but that's another story! Do you know somebody else that STILL uses a 27 Year Old Computer?
If you have more than one email account when you click new mail there is a "From" box right under the address boxes which allows you to click on the account you want to use to send- in my case either @tiscali or @google.
Yup I'm in the Groove now and I'm following you but that ONLY changes the From:, not the E-Mail Account that will Send it! There's a different option to do this that I will explain ...
If I open new mail and click the google address all is well. Not so if I click tiscali.
Yup! It's the 'stuff' that makes you go NUTS when the logic ain't logical! But after doing some research about multiple Mail Accounts I found the logical logic that will help! Hmm, did that make any sense to you? I'm get so confused when I do immutable weird mutating stuff that turns my logical mind into mindless gibberish logic but it makes me happy!
Alternatively it could be that this difference only appeared after I carried out the start up operation you gave me last time. I do not know.
O.K. Me BAD! I told you to do that but I didn't tell you WHY. As you're using your Mac it creates different Caches to cut down on having to re-search the Hard Drive again. This makes 'Stuff' open quicker and when you open 'Stuff', the Mac will ALWAYS look at the caches first before looking at the Hard Drive. If the Mac finds this 'Stuff' in the cache it WILL NOT look for it any further and uses the Cached Information. If you change something on the Hard Drive that the Mac HAS NOT cached, like renaming iPhoto files without using iPhoto, it won't know about it and then weird stuff starts happening. 'Safe Boot' clears the caches and MAKES the Mac re-cache 'Stuff'.
I have tried to attach all sorts of photos to the tiscali new mail and none works - thought maybe there was some kind of size limit perhaps but lots of the older photos are really quite small.
Well, I think I know an answer for this should work! You know: what's good for the goose should be good for geese! O.K. down to business and I took my time to aim this 'Shot'! Hmm, where to start and do I explain this simply?
First open Mail then Preferences and goto the Account window. You know how to setup the Accounts because they work, sort of! At the bottom of the Account Information window, there's an option to use a 'Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)'. It's a drop down box that will let you change or edit this information. Change this to 'None' and underneath this option is a check box to 'Use only this server'. Un-check it if it's checked. Now you don't have a 'Default Mail Server' and can choose the server to use from a new e-mail. Now while you are still in this window, click the Advance button under the tool bar. At the bottom of this window there's a click box for the option 'Use IDLE command if the server supports it'. Un-check it if it's checked. This option only works with IMAP Servers and not with the POP Servers that you use. O.K. You still with me?
Now click the 'Composing' icon on the tool bar at the top. Then uncheck 'Automatically <Cc or Bcc> myself' if it's checked and you don't use it. IMO:This option SO asinine! But stupid programers do stupid 'Stuff'. Now, the next option to change is 'Send new mail from'. This maybe the 'Pain in your Derrière' that you're having but it should change when you select the 'From:' while creating new e-mail. You probably only have three choices here and I suggest anything BUT the 'Account of the last viewed mailbox'. O.K. Still with me?
Now I KNOW why my this Mail Stuff was a 'Pain in your Derrière'. Did I mention that stupid programers do stupid 'Stuff'. This is a quote I found in Mail's Help! *"To change the server you want to use to send the message, use the server pop-up menu in the New Message window."* Well, O.K. But I was going blind looking for this infamous 'Server Pop-up Menu' in the the 'New Message Window'. Mail's Help said It's there but I don't SEE IT! Plus, I don't believe everything I read or half of the 'Stuff' I see! Swell, Just Swell! I feel like I'm watching PAINT dry! And I'm not in my 'Groove' yet plus I know the answer will 'DAWN ON ME' later while I'm doing other 'Stuff'! So I do, then it does and 'DAWN', my third eye, shows me the way! O.K. Are you still with me or are you busy, laughing at this rambling Weirdo? Can you tell that I read & write like a moron that's a Computer Genius?
Now were was I? O Yea... Open a new e-mail window and look for a square box on the left side of 'FROM:'. See it? Now click on it and a drop box will appear. The infamous 'Server Pop-up Menu' option you want isn't even list here and I kept missing it! I did mention that stupid programers do stupid 'Stuff', didn't I? So click on 'Customize ...' and the ALL the Mail options are now shown with check boxes. Isn't that just dandy? Are you cursing at that stupid programer like a truck driver? I DID! I cursing now! I curse out that stupid programer every time a create a new e-mail! Man O Man! No wonder there's so many names to impugn a Stupid person ... Asinine, Dumb, Dense, Dull, Slow, Obtuse but their just unintelligent. But a person with Stupid Stupidity is TOTALLY Brain Dead! Well, I did it again and went off the subject, carried away with mindless gibberish. O.K. You still with me?
On the right side of the 'FROM:' box is that infamous 'Server Pop-up Menu' option that you want to use. Click the check box next to, on the left so doesn't disappear! Now you can choose whichever E-Mail Server you want to send e-mail from. But before you click the OK button I have a suggestion. Uncheck the 'Cc:' box under 'TO:' then check the 'Bcc:' box. I explain ... The 'Cc:' means Carbon Copy and the e-mail address use here will receive a Copy the the e-mail. But everybody that gets this e-mail WILL know the e-mail address of everybody else that got this e-mail! Does that make any since? Plus Spammers can collect these e-mail address way to easy! It's a long story to explain how quickly this can be done. Now the 'Bcc:' means 'Blind Carbon Copy' and it works just like 'Cc:', but there's ONE very important difference! Everybody that gets this e-mail is BLIND to the e-mail address of everybody else that got this e-mail! Plus Spammers are BLIND about these e-mail address as well, TOTALY impossible to collect! PERIOD! And you probably know this by now, but you can use the the 'Reply-To Address Field' to have replies sent to an email address that is different from the email address you’re using to send the message. One last tip then I've got to go to bed! You can sent email without an email address in the 'TO:' box if you use 'Bcc:' with an email address! But this may not work because some Spammers don't use an email address in the 'TO:' box any more, so several 'E-Mail Servers' will block an email with blank 'TO:'
WOW! Did I get carried away! This post is HUGE!
I hope I covered everything and that Apple let's me post it!
    Later ...

  • Mail, Keychain & Disk Utility Issues After Install

My clean install of Leopard seem to go fine. After restart it wanted to grab an Apple Remote Desktop update, I believe, via software update. Re-installed clean copies of further mac software and known Leopard compatible 3rd party apps.
My problems started to appear when I used migration assistant to transfer 2 accounts from my 10.4.10 backup. Both accounts went over, but on one the mail upgrade process consistently failed and on the other the keychain seemed to be of no use.
All's fine now, I manually imported the errant mail acount and just started with a fresh keychain on the other offending account. I know the backup was sound as I subsequently used it to restore a Tiger install as a fallback on another disk.
My last issue appears every-time I run Disk Utility to verify and repair permissions. I get the following text displayed part way through a verify and or repair.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
The verify/repair completes and I can quit Disk Utility. I'm presuming this is as a result of the early software update Leopard wanted to perform and the current shipping version of Disk Utility has no idea of the desired permission state of this file?
Was just wondering if anyone else had experienced any of the above or had any explanation?
Hope you're all having more fun than headaches with Leopard.

    Nerowolfe,
I have installed Leopard and have had nothing but problems as well. Perhaps you can help me. I am ready to roll back to Tiger. These are just a few:
    1. I cannot mount my external firewire drives. I have separately tested each and they work fine, I booted with the Tiger disk and they mounted fine, I reset the firewire port and when I connected them they mounted on my desktop, but not in the finder window and when I tried to open one, it just hung. I have been unsuccessful after many attempts to mount one of them with Leopard.
    2. I appear to get random hangs. I have a 160GB hard drive and 2GB memory. I have 42 GB space left on the hard drive....yet I continue to have random hangs, especially when I try to open disk utility
    3. Spotlight just does not work, period
    4. I keep finding locked folders. Right now my CS3 is locked and even after going into get info and unlocking it, it just locks back and I am unable to open the application. I am a photographer and have been unable to do any work for the past 2 weeks while I am messing around with my computer. Now I have Christmas photos to sort and can't access the photos on the external drives or even open CS3
I have searched the forums, tried many of the recommendations, but nothing is working for me....perhaps since you have been successful you could give me a hand with these issues.
    I wait for help.......
Other than that, how do I uninstall Leopard and reinstall Tiger????

  • HT1277 mail application degrading in performance

My mail application recently became painfully slow when performing simple tasts such as typing, scrolling, and opening and closing windows. It's only the mail app that's performing this way. I'm on os x 10.8.4. I ran disc utility, but it found no problems. Any helpful suggestions?

The Folder and Store objects are multithread safe, so that's not an issue.
Of course, it's up to you to coordinate access to the Folder so that different
    threads don't confuse each other.
