Mail is broken - behaves strangely and refuses to quit

While using Mail under 10.4 it broke. When opened no mail appeared and the "color wheel" would spin endlessly. The only way to quit the application was to force quit. The only solution found in consultation with a Mac Genius was to upgrade to Leopard. It worked for a while and now begins to exhibit the same types of behavior. Currently mail will not download and the mail application will not quit. Please help.

Have you tested your memory lately?
Try downloading the 110 MB 10.5.1 updater from the Apple website +(NOT the automatic software updater)+. Then reboot. Once at your desktop do NOT open Mail. Instead go to Disc Utility and fix your permissions +(this might take a while)+. Then try Mail again.

  • Mail not receiving mail and refuses to quit when prompted

When I open Mail, it seems to work fine. It receives all messages from the server without any problems; however, a few days later I notice that I don't get any mail from the Mail.app. However, I know I have been getting e-mails because of my iPhone and the Gmail Notifier.
I try to quit Mail when this happens, but I have to force quit the application. Mail does not stop responding. It just doesn't quit. There are no error messages. It just doesn't receive mail after a while and won't even if I press the "Get Mail" button.
Thank you in advance for helping me out with this.

I have this same problem as well. Mail will work fine for a few hours then it will get "stuck" on downloading a message. I never gets unstuck and I can't quit mail or the activity of downloading the mail - thus I have to force quit the app several times a day. It will also occasionally tell me to rebuild the index, which I do, but it only seems to help for a couple of hours until the next message gets stuck while downloading. Mail.app ran fine up until recently.
The only thing I can think of recently is that I have been on some sites that say "if you visit this site it may damage your computer" - I never downloaded anything... can malware be added to you computer just by visiting a site via the safari browser? I ran a malware/virus scan and it found mostly windows malware/viruses in old archived email attachments. Any ides?
FWIW: I'm using POP accounts and keeping them on the server for 1 week

  • Lion Mail can't send/receive and requiring Force Quit.

After Lion 10.7 , Mail Version 5.0 (1244.2/1244.3) can't send or receive (to smtp or pop servers) as usual with Snow Leopard. In addiction, Mail seems hanged and is not quitting graciously... requiring Force Quit.
Today I noted a lot of users reporting Mail problems after Lion, and Apple site says there was only a minor changes at Mail authentication methods. I tried everything they said... and everything communities said. Nothing works.
Is Apple really working on Mail reported problems ?

I get emails with my sbcglobal and ymail but i cannot send any email!! this is getting very annoying.  It used to work just fine on snow leopard. I even tried using the same setup that I have on my iPhone, same smtp etc and nothing seems to work...

  • Screen behaves strangely and the computer would freeze on wake up

    Hi everybody.
    I have a problem.
Sometimes after the starting chime and the apple logo grey screen, my mac would show for a few moments a strange screen with little white "rectangles"  filling the grey space. (see image).
Then, once that's what happened: I left my mbp in sleep mode but when I lifted the screen to activate it, the computer would not respond. The LED went off. After a few second I was prompted another very strange image.
It seems to me that a similar image appeared when, using Safari and opening or closing a new tab, the graphic card switches from one to the other (I have gfxCardStatus v. 2.0.1).
Does anybody have any hint or idea about what is happening?
BTW I am completely under warranty (It is less than 2 months old). Moreover I tried to perform the Apple Hardware Test (both "normal" test and "deep" test). Nothing wrong was found.
PS: I am writing here because it would be quite annoying for me to take my laptop to an Apple center and have it checked. I need it. That would be the real least resource for me.

I found the setting and made the recommended changes. I will check back in the morning to confirm that this is the correct fix.  So I know going forward, in the event I put the commuter to sleep, what is the proper method to wake it for re-use?

  • TS2537 Mail application cancels shutdown and refuses to quit

I am running OS 10.9 and I still have problems with the mail application. It often does not want to quit and cancels shutdown. Are there any suggestions out there?

    Back up all data.
    1. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/Bundles
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu.* A folder may open, or you may get an error message that the item can't be found. Either result is normal. If the folder does open and has contents, move the contents to the Desktop. Relaunch Mail and test. If there's no change, put the contents of the folder back and quit Mail again.
    2. Repeat with this line:
    /Library/Mail/Bundles
This time you may be prompted for your login password when you remove the items. Make sure they're removed from the folder and not just copied to the Desktop. If necessary, copy them first and then move the originals to the Trash.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • SIL behaving strangely and battery oddness

    Hey all,
I'm a proud owner of a 5.5 MacBook Pro but I'm stumbling into some oddness about the status indicator light :/
I noticed right now that it's not lighting up when I'm actually using my Mac, if I close the lid it'll go into the flashing mode but once opened again (or restarted/shutdowned and started up) it vanish again...
As I had stumbled upon the Apple Support page about resetting the SMC I tried those steps and it seems like they had no effect, is there anything I can do about it?
Another problem I noticed is that my battery is about only 140 cycles yet and still it's already at 85-% of the maximum initial capacity, is that normal? It was nice to have a 6h+ out of power, those days when I get to 4h30 is a conquest :P
    Thanks for your attention

    Piva,
I'm not going to try and address your lighting however you can try to do a PRAM reset. Here are instructions for it and resetting the SMC for a MBP.
    _SMC RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    _PRAM RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Release the keys.
As far as your battery goes, have you ever calibrated it, I'm guessing not. Here is information on how to care for your battery. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1764220

  • Mail.app using 80% CPU and won't quit - any ideas?

Hi, I'll try and cut a short story shorter...
I tried to begin using Mail.app last night instead of Entourage and Thunderbird just to see what it was like. Having never used mail.app before, I use the bundled import wizard to retrieve the settings from the Entourage account (POP, wifes ISP account) which seemed to work ok. I didn't test at this point as I have another account (POP again, my gMail) stored on Thunderbird which I also wanted to import.
To import the mailboxs from Thunderbird I copied the relevant folders from the ~\Library...\myprofile\... folder to the desktop and added the .mbox extension. Then used the import wizard 'other' option to bring them in.
All seemed to go ok. I recreated my 'other' account manually and sent/received some test mails etc. then marked everyting in all mailboxes as read.
At this point the laptop went very slow so I checked Activity Viewer - this showed Mail.app hovering between 70% - 80%. I thought this was a bit odd so I tried to Quit Mail, but it just hung. I then force quit and the CPU calms down.
I opened Mail again and it was ok for about 3 minutes until I try to view various mailboxes. Mail is still responsive but the mailboxes are empty! I use the rebuild function and they show the messages again, unless I look at a different one and then go back to the rebuilt mailbox - it's empty again.
Then the CPU/won't quit happened again. CPU is up at the same levels, Mail.app has 7 threads. I thought there may be some indexing going on so I went to bed. I got up this morning to find the G4 fans going crazy and CPU still consuming the CPU?
    Any ideas?
I'm thinking I may trash both accounts and rebuild from scratch tonight.

    Hi Ian.
Aside from whatever the problem is here (which I don't really know), you shouldn't add an .mbox extension to mbox files in order to import them into Mail. Mail uses that extension for something else. Also, you'd get better results using Eudora Mailbox Cleaner to do the conversion.

  • Has anyone ever encountered layer blend modes behaving strangely?

I use photoshop quite a bit for retouching and photo compositing. Tonight I encountered a strange problem. I was trying to create a vintage look on a photo and had a number of adjustment layers including a curves, levels, color fill and there were also a few texture/noise layers all set to varying opacities. Near the top of all this I had a vignette layer that was black around the edges and white in the center set to blend mode of multiply. Well, when I was clicking on and off I realize that that vignette layer was definitely lightening the center part of the overall image quite a bit (the part that is white on the vignette layer), almost like a screen. So I flipped the vignette layer through different opacity modes and saw that there was no change in its behavior, every mode was screening the white, even darker color and multiply. I thought maybe it was interacting in a weird way with one of the other layers so I turned all the others off except the back ground-- still no change. Then I dropped the layer down one at time until it was below the background. When I started to move it up again, it was behaving normally for a moment until I moved it up a couple levels in the stacking order and then it went back to the screen behavior. Anyway I shuffled it around a bit but there was no consitency to when it would display the correct opacity and when it wouldn't, so it did not seem to be an interaction with any specific layer. I don't know, but I can't really think of any case where white set to multiply should produce a lighter result even if it were interacting with another opacity. In any case it does seem to me that there is something going on with the overall computation of opacities. I tried creating a new black and white layer and it was also doing the same thing, behaving strange and not displaying the correct opacity.
I'm tired, so I'm going to bed. I'm going to shut off the computer and hope this goes away when I reboot, but if it does not, does this sound familiar to anyone? I'm not a regular visitor to this forum, but I thought I'd put it out there in case anyone else has experienced anything like this. I've only got 5 gigs of ram on this computer and I've been working away for a while... maybe photoshop just couldn't keep up(?) I'm using Photoshop CS5, RGB Adobe 1998 colorspace.  I've never had anything like this happen in the last 11 years I've been using photoshop. Hmmm.... hope I don't have to reinstall or call support or worse. fingers crossed.

Nevermind. It is still having the problem. I have to think that this file is just corrupt somehow because I just opened another file and can't seem to cause the same problem. Basically, I can fill a layer with white, put it to a blend mode of multiply or darker color and it will block out everything of the image below, ie totally opaque. The opaqueness varies depending on the if there are other layers also on blend modes, but it does not seem to correspond to normal blend mode interaction. If I put it right on top of a regular layer with an image on it, it totally blocks it out on a blend mode of multiply... weird. I am going to scrap this file and see if the problem recurs in other files. My 2006 Mac Pro is getting some years on it and has been running pretty slow. I'm not a hardware expert but I've done everything I know how to do to maintain it. Was thinking of upping the ram to see if I can hold out a bit longer before I upgrade the computer. Wouldn't surprise me if this problem is related to the computer.

  • After waking from sleep bluetooth mouse behaves strangely

    Hello
I have this issue . First of all i have Allow bluetooth to wake from sleep but it doesn't happen but i don't really care about that.
Most important thing is that after waking up from sleep my mouse has lag when moving , the mouse behaves strangely and movement of mouse is not natural .Restarting or shutting down doesn't fix it .
    Anyone knows why this happens?

Try resetting the PRAM and SMC.

  • Mail activity hangs endlessly. Safari will not quit

MacBook Pro, 16GB 10.9 Terabyte HD.  Tried completely reinstalling Maverick, fix permissions, repair disk.  Sometimes internet preference pane hangs and will not open.  Hangs Safari as well. There must be unknown conflict?  Problem seems to be related to a "remote server".  Activity Monitor shows two Safari-related activities not responding.  I have to force quit mail and safari to get the computer to shut down.  In Internet Accounts, I disabled google and Yahoo.  Have iCloud, and twitter.  Other Apps seems to work ok.  I have switched to Chrome instead instead of Safari because of Safari issues, but Mail still has endless activity and will not quit.  Any ideas?  should not have to force quit all of the time

The problems seems to be with the following, which is not responding in the Activity Monitor:
    com.apple.preferences.internetaccounts.remoteservice
I cant find this file on my computer.

  • Just done a fresh install of Snow Leopard with all updates,iMac 5.1 behaves strange, sometimes I start Google Chrome and look at youtube videos the computer freezes and shuts down immediately, I believe its  related to overheating ?

Just done a replacement of the pata DVD drive (its new and is working ok),  and a fresh clean  install of Snow Leopard with all updates, iMac 5.1 behaves strange, sometimes I start Google Chrome and look at youtube videos the computer freezes and shuts down immediately,
I believe its  related to overheating ?
iStat Pro shows GPU diode temp at 66 C, CPU at 48 C,  Fan rpms is around 1000
    Any ideas somebody ?
The hard disk has been previously checked with state of the art techniques that have confirmed that the hard disk drive is in perfect condition.

1.5-3 minute boot up as opposed to 15-20 seconds
    And
why it takes a long time to load a lot of things.
    I have restored this
    from a time machine partition.
TimeMachine is only a backup and restore, it won't fix issues in software and according to your information, doesn't even optimize the restore for best performance on boot hard drives.
What you need to do to regain your speed is to understand how your machine works
    Why is my computer slow?
Fix any and all issues in software following this list of fixes
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Then follow this defrag method I've outlined
How to safely defrag a Mac's hard drive
    Most commonly used backup methods
There shouldn't be need to reinstall OS X fresh unless your having file structure issues which if they are should appear when in the Steps, which then a zero erase and install will cure as well as any bad sector issues, the defrag step wouldn't be necessarry on a freshly installed system obviously as the files are written all together, not in portions all over the drive.
    Hope this assists.

I'm about ready to migrate everything to google and gmail. Once again, the iCloud iMap server is rejecting my password and refusing to get my mail. This has happened dozens of times since iCloud went live. My password has NEVER been changed. The same password works flawlessly in iTunes store and Apple store. Somebody please give me a reason NOT to cut bait on iCloud.

iCloud Mail is down.  Has been for a while.  I would hope this will be resolved soon.
I agree with you.  iCloud does not seem to have anywhere near a 99.9% uptime.  :-)
