Mail is deleted on IMAP accounts

I have multiple email accounts setup on my MBP with Lion, as well as my IOS devices. If I read email from an IMAP account on my MBP, it no longer appears on my IOS devices. If I read it first on an IOS device, it will appear on the MBP. This doesn't happen with POP mail, just IMAP accounts like Gmail and MobileMe.  Can anyone shed some light?  It is driving me crazy as I am a road warrior and use all devices for my business.
Thanks in advance for your time and assistance.

Which of course moves them off of the server.
Make these folders in the Imap account, not the local one.

Btinternet being your internet service provider? If I'm correct, have you followed their directions:

  • Apple Mail not working with IMAP account

I have been using Entourage for my email with several IMAP email accounts. SOme of the accounts I was getting occasional errors so I thought I would try Apple Mail.
I am able to successfully set up the accounts in Mail (i.e. it successfully logs into server) however it does not get any of the mail nor does it get any of the mail folders that are on the IMAP server (viewing email using Web Mail or even going back to Entourage shows the emails on the account). Are there any special (hidden) tricks that I need to do to get Mail to work with a standard IMAP mail server?

I have a very similar problem. Apparently IMAP access is better than POP3. Well IMAP slows my Mac to a complete stop whereas POP3 is seamless. I deleted my POP3 mailboxes after successfully accessing my GMail accounts via IMAP, then it slowed down.
I've deleted the IMAP accounts a few times, but each time a new account is created it forces me to accept IMAP with no option for POP3. The help file also contains no information on POP3.
I get about 50 emails everyday and my usual point of email access has just become redundant, I must now rely on email via my browser and .
I made this change because the iPhone does not sync downloaded emails with Apple Mail. In Mail on my Mac, the one GMail inbox I have setup says there are 11 unread which it eventually shows yet none appear unread. I'll have to rely on web-based email until this is resolved.
Can anyone help with these IMAP access problems?

  • Deleting an IMAP Account in Apple Mail

    Hello,
Recently the staff director set the staff up with Apple Mail, and for the most part it is running smoothly. However, there are two workstations that share an odd glitch. An IMAP account that cannot synchronize to our mail server can also not be deleted. I tried simply deleting the ~Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.pl file, but alas the mailbox populated on its own (and MobileMe is probably not the cause as we are not using it).
Checking through the server's mail settings everything seems alright, though at that point I noticed that the two workstations share the same username (for instance: a1@example1, and a1@example2). The other workstations each have independent usernames.
A detail that I don't think is the cause, but may be important enough to share is that 'a1' has administrative privileges on our server. Another common link between the two workstations in question is that they are both Mac Minis (OS 10.6.3), whereas the other workstations are iMacs (OS 10.5.8).
If you have any ideas, I would love to hear from you. Thanks!

I am sorry, I should have mentioned that I did try the usual method in preferences for deleting the account before trying anything else. Simultaneously removing com.apple.plist as well as the Mail folder and then restarting the workstation unfortunately does not solve the problem either. The account is somehow reproducing itself in Apple Mail.
I feel I should also be a bit more detailed with the account's syncing to our mail server; it seems like the account (on both workstations) has been trying to sync to our mail server with no success. I'm not sure if that makes a difference in the process of removing the account.
    Thank you for your assistance!

My blackberry 9900 would allow me to delete an email on my phone and it would also be deleted on GMAIL.
Now with the new Blackberry OS,  I delete an email on my phone and the only action it does on GMAIL is removing it from the inbox, but it still appears in ALL MAIL, so after weeeks of this, there are litreally hundres of emails still in ALL EMAIL that i thought I had deleted already.
It's a matter of tweaking your Gmail settings to have the email go to Gmail Trash instead of All Mail.  The article at this link has the clearest desription I've seen..  This is working for me.

  • IPhone mail inbox grey for IMAP account

I am having trouble with the main inbox folder on IMAP email accounts being greyed out on the iPhone. Greyed out meaning I cannot select the inbox and look at my mail. Only the inbox is grey, subfolders are black and I can read mail in them.
Two separate IMAP accounts worked fine in the past, with exactly the same settings & credentials. Now both exhibit the same behavior.
Yes, I've recreated the accounts from scratch on the iPhone.
Yes, I've tried using 'INBOX' in the IMAP path
Does anyone know what the grey represents in terms of an error message?
Any fixes for the this problem?
    Thank you in advance.

Guys... not sure if this helps but it's worth mentioning. I'm beta testing a system at work for an upcoming change of email servers in the next 8 months or so. I have been using my 3G up until yesterday with no problems and then suddenly my inbox started being greyed out. Every once in a while when going back to the home screen then choosing mail again I might get placed into the inbox where new messages could be read or deleted. Going back out of the inbox would result in a greyed out choice. I did try removing/adding/etc the settings and even creating new profiles. All were the same. I upgraded to 2.1 this morning and same issue.
Now the only thing I did differently prior to having problems is that I accidentally created subfolders in my INBOX. I'm running UWIMAP 2007B on the backend and Perdition as the front end proxy server with a self signed SSL certificate. The mailbox format being used is MIX therefore subfolders are supported. I did remove all traces of the subfolders and the problem continued so I'm not 100% sure that was the cause, however, it is strange that I have had this mailbox configured since July 17th and no so much as a hiccup until the subfolders were created. Thunderbird or mail.app had no problems during any of this accessing my inbox and folders. It was only the iphone giving me grief. Anyway, removing the folders had no good outcome so I started searching the web. Coming across multiple posts that say use INBOX as the imap prefix folder, I decided to try that. That worked great but since my other folders were in ~/mail that caused those folders to not appear. The easy solution is to move move those out of ~/mail and under INBOX. If you are using dovecot or another server that supports subfolders this should work as the INBOX is simply a directory with dotfiles that contain the data. All of my folders are now under the INBOX and the iphone appears to be happy. My inbox is accessible and I have all of my other folders at my fingertips.
I hope this will help at least one of you out there. It's been very annoying but glad it was figured out.
    Robert

  • Deleting an IMAP account on one Mac. Will it affect my laptop with same account?

I set up the same IMAP account on two Apple Mail programs: one on my laptop, the other on my iMac. I want to remove or disable the account on my iMac, but will either removing it completely or disabling it affect how my account runs on my laptop? Will I still be able to send and receive emails on my laptop if I delete the account on my Mac?
FYI, the account was set up on my laptop before setting it upon my iMac.
    Thank you!

    Hi
Is it the same in reverse, I am cleaning a MacBook prior to selling and I want to remove all the email accounts IMAP and POP and want to be sure this will not affect the accounts or emails on my main iMac.
    Help is appreciated.
    Thanks

  • No incoming mail on ipad with IMAP account

I have not been able to receive incoming mail from an IMAP account hosted by Network Solutions, and I'm not sure if the problem is on the client or server side. I am also not able to delete messages from the inbox. (I get a message saying "Unable to move message: The message could not be moved to the mailbox Trash."
I am sending and receiving emails from this account on both my iPhone and macbook without any problem. The iPad account is set-up exactly the same on the iPad as it is on the phone and macbook. The inbound port is set to 993, which is what it is automatically set to in the others even though NS says to set to 143.
I have tried deleting the account and reinstalling many times with no success. I also tried resetting the ipad to factory settings. This worked briefly and everything worked fine for a couple of test emails, and then I was back at square one.
There are a couple of things I've noticed. All my mail is in the inbox up until 9/5/13, after that there is nothing. If I search for a specific email and opt to continue the search on the server, the email is found and put in my mailbox (it is not there after deleting and reinstalling the account.) Also, I notice at the bottom of the folder bar where it tells you progress, last updated, etc. that when I am checking for mail, the status shows the downloading progress bar and the approximate number of emails I'm missing very briefly.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

  • Mail Messages Deleted on IMAP Server

My email is on a server at DreamHost.com and I retrieve it with Apple Mail 7.3 with Mac OS X 10.9.5. My Mail preferences are set to IMAP. However, whenever I retrieve mail, the messages download, but the server versions get deleted. I can no longer see them in the RoundCube webmail client. My understanding is that by using IMAP the messages should be retained on the server. Is there any settings in Mail that would cause this to happen?

  • Mail problem with some IMAP accounts - login fails, Thunderbird OK

After upgrading to Mountain Lion Mac Mail fails to connect to some of my IMAP accounts. I tried everything I can think of. The problem is, the accounts work fine with Thunderbird. However, one of my IMAP accounts works with my main user account's settings (it was imported from my Lion set up), but it fails to set up with a second user. It seems to me that using IMAP with my provider and the Mountain Lion Mail is not working.
Rebooting my saved Lion installation confirmed that it still works...
Installing said accounts with Thunderbird and IMAP also works.
Login with Mac Mail and POP using the accounts also works, webmail works, iOS works, a freshly set up Gmail account with IMAP works ....
ONLY the damned Mountain Lion Mail program doesn't work with my mail provider's IMAP.  WHY? WHAT CAN I DO?
    Any insights or ideas?

  • I see briefly the content of my Mail Inbox of an IMAP account, then everything disappear and the inbox is empty

    Hi There,
I have beeen experiencing for the past few days some issues with my Inbox of an IMAP based email account. My inbox is empty.
When I start mail my Inbox is empty after briefly appearing at the sgtart of the application.
I installed thunderbird to verify that my IMAP account was not the issue and I can clearly see, receive and send email.
I can also access that account via a webmail interface and everything seems fine.
The problem started occuring after getting some error messages from the server indicating that I had gobe over the allocated quota. I cleaned up the account but now mail does present me an empty inbox. Again the account info are valid, nothing has changed.
The interesting things is that my iphone & ipad that are using the same setup and my inbox is also empty there.
With mountain lion (clean install), I can see the emails arriving via the notification bar.
I am at a loss and would appreciate any help if somebody has encountered such a problem.
    Thanks
    Eric

Try closing the Mail app completely : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Mail app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
Also do a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Mail.app handling multiple IMAP accounts

    Hi,
I find it really hard to use multiple IMAP accounts with Mail.app. The way it displays IMAP accounts is really ugly and very confusing. At best you have one Inbox which displays all the Inboxes on your accounts. Then you have separate drafts, sent, trash treelike view for your accounts "special" mailboxes and then again some-kind-of-tree-view of your IMAP account - which by the way doesn't always even display! It depends if you have checked save trash/sent/junk/etc. messages to server or something which really doesn't have any logic in it. Also it doesn't display all the folders like Inbox (which is combined mailbox at the top which I explained). Then you can drag mailbox from your IMAP account to the "panel" which I think only copies and is not shortcut.
Could you please do something to this instead of adding some ugly templates for sending your holiday pictures to your mom. I think that Mail.app should be developed to more "professional" usage, rather than develope features that teaches people to use their mailclient as a personal spamming tool for horrible HTML-mails.
ps. I'd also like to turn off that stupid embedded-attachemts. Attachments are attachments and not a part of the email content thanks.
    -edit-
you can see a screenshot of my Mail.app at work. I use more mailboxes at home and it's way more ugly. There should also be somekind of "don't display" -options as it displays some horrible Exchange-folders also.

  • Saved Message Drafts disappear in Mail for Mobile Me IMAP account only.

I have 4 email account defined in my Mail Accounts preferences. Three of them are to POP servers and my Mobile Me account is IMAP. I often draft messages and save them before sending them to give myself time to proof them before sending. When a message is saved as a draft from any one of my POP accounts, I get a "Drafts" item in the Mailboxes/folder bar that expands to each one of my 4 accounts, including the Mobile Me account.
However, when I draft and save a message from my Mobile Me account, it seems to disappear. If I have no other saved drafts in the other accounts I do not see a Drafts item in the Mailboxes/folder bar. And when I do see a Drafts item in the Mailboxes/folder bar because I have saved drafts from my other POP accounts, there is nothing in my Mobile Me drafts mailbox/folder.
This has perplexed me for a long time, and my workaround was to compose and save drafts using one of the POP accounts, and only changing the From field to my Mobile Me account just prior to sending.
Then, yesterday, I needed to access my Mobile Me mail using the web mail interface while at one of my customer sites, and to my surprise, I found all of my many missing drafts in the Drafts folder of my Mobile Me Web mail interface.
    So my questions are:
    1. Why don't I see my Mobile Me in a drafts folder while in Mail, considering that they are indeed in the drafts folder on the server?
    2. Is this the normal and proper behavior for an IMAP connection?
    3. Is this a bug, or is it a configuration issue in my mail account preference for Mobile Me?
    Thank you in advance.
    Jeff Cameron

Does anyone have any ideas or explanations for this behavior?

  • IMAP Mail Messages Deleted Not Moved to Trash on Server

Hi, I'm having a heck of a time trying to get the server to update my account after I delete e-mail messages using my IMAP account in Mail. I am using Mail Version 2.0.7 and my Mailbox Behaviors in Preferences>Accounts for Trash are set to Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox and NOT TO Store deleted messages on the server, and I Permanently erase deleted messages that are One week old. My question is, even after I move messages to my Trash, then right click on it and delete them permanently, they are still hanging out on the server, and I can see them through my online account, even after syncing. I set my online Preferences for Composing to Move Deleted Messages to Deleted Messages, but it is never happening, unless I delete them again online. Am I doing something wrong? Any help would be great! Thanks,
    Justen

Have you tried rebuilding (Menubar > Mailbox > Rebuild) the Inbox, Trash, and other associated mail folders? (If Rebuild is grayed out and you have multiple accounts, you will have to expand the view of the Inbox, Trash, and other associated mail folders containing these messages and select each affected account's Inbox, Trash, and others, separately, so Rebuild won't be grayed out.)
