Mail is demanding "a preferred outgoing mail server", but in MAIL; help, it doesn't exist.
I finally got mail working for the first time in three years, but everytime I log in, it pops up an error window over an old message, and says it couldn't be sent because I don't have "a preferred outgoing mail server". Now how would you find out how to set that and fix this? It doesn't exist in preferences, so I clicked open "Help", and searched the phrase; "preferred outgoing mail server". It doesn't exist. Anybody, want to fill this unapple gap?
Do you have a server specified in Preferenes > Accounts?

Hello, I got a new computer with the old harddisk. Can't play my itunes music because not authorised. Apple ID is very old e-mail adress that doesn't exist anymore and I forgot the password (5 years old??). When chose for secret question birth date seems wrong. Tried everything. I need to make a new apple-id but cannot connect the music that I bought under my old name to my new name. Can't reach anyone!!! Automatic FAQ system is of no help. What to do?
That doesn't help me. For itunes it brings me to the express lane which doesn't help because my case is not in it. It's all standard procedure things. I understand those but my situation is different. The combination of a passport forgotten and an non-existing email adress (and birth dates that are not correct or not accepted). What I need is my password emailed to another email adress than the original one because that no longer exists.

Why is Mail asking me for the name of an smtp server for an email address that doesn't exist?
I've migrated from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion on a new Mac, but in trying to use Mail on ML, it keeps asking me for the name of an smtp server for an email address that's never existed. The addy has my user name correct, but the server part of the address doesn't exist, or at least I've never used an email address with that provider. On ML there's no plist file for Mail, so nothing to delete there. What else can I do to get Mail working? The only other option I have is to abandon Mail as being crippled and useless, and use Postbox, which for it's price (US$9.95) is an attractive option. OTOH, I've paid for Mail after all, so it really ought to work. Any clues as to what I can do to stop its nonsensical behaviour? How do I file a bug report?
TIA.

~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Container.plist
(Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library", since the ~/Library is hidden on ML) -
all of a sudden I can't send e-mails. Tried turning computer on and off - nothing. I went into account settings and noticed the port # was 25 and next to it it says default is 465 so I changed the port # to 465 - didn't help. I have no authentication already. IS there something else I should change? nothing looks out of the ordinary to me - I am completely lost - if you can help me I greatly appreciate it!!!
It looks like you have the SMTP set to use no password instead of normal password like your POP server.
ISP help desks are worthless as you have discovered.
There is no phone support for Thunderbird. Your ISP is doing you a disservice by giving you any number for Thunderbird. There are some people out there using the name and charging you for help. Be warned. -
How do I delete a defunct mailbox? Doing "Mailbox" "Delete Mailbox" only turns it grey and the next time Mail goes after messages it searches the defunct mailbox.
Try restarting your computer. If that doesn't correct it try a SMC and pram reset
To reset the SMC
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
To reset PRAM/NVRAM
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys. -
How to access iCloud if my mail service provider doesn't exist anymore?
I need urgent help from this community. The issue arose when I upgraded my Mac to Maverick. I have lost the connection to iCloud (and all my data) because iCloud asks me to enter the password of a former e-mail address that was discontinued by the sevice provider years ago. When that happened, I changed this mail for another one in the same iTunes account and I have bought many apps and music from then. How can skip this request and get the access back to iCloud? Thanks!!
Go to System Preferences>iCloud, sign out, choose delete at all of the prompts (your data will still be in iCloud), then sign back in with the new ID ("email address").

Cannot edit outgoing SMTP server list in mail.app
Did a fresh install of Snow Leopard on a new 13" Macbook Pro unibody and was trying to add an IMAP email account. After failing to connect, I was trying to specify the outgoing port and realized that I could not edit the outgoing SMTP server list.
Steps to reproduce error:
1. Open mail.app
2. Go to Mail > Preferences
3. Select "Accounts" tab and select any mail account
4. Select "Account Information" tab and click Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) drop down menu
5. Select "Edit SMTP Server List..."
After that point the instead of opening the list of servers with their settings, it simply returns to the "Account Information" screen. I'm a bit confused because I've never had this happen before in any other version of mail app. I cannot edit or delete any outgoing mail server accounts because of this. Any help will be much appreciated. Thank you for your time and consideration. This should not happen. Had you migrated back to the fresh install the Mail folder in User-Library? Or is this a clean setup? I would go to User-Library-Preferences, and drag the com.apple.mail.plist to the trash, then open Mail and try again.

How does Mail decide which outgoing SMTP server to use?
I have Mail setup with two accounts - one for home use and one for work. Each has its own outgoing SMTP server. My question: how does mail decide which outgoing server to use? I don't want to mix work and home stuff.
Specifically, what happens in these three scenarios?
1) I compose a new mail. Does it always use the first account's outgoing SMTP server or does Mail look at the recipient's domain and base its decision on that?
2) I reply to a work email. Is Mail smart enough to look at my domain or the sender's to know to use the work outgoing SMTP server?
3) I reply to home email. Is Mail smart enough to look at my domain or the sender's to know to use the home outgoing SMTP server?
Any information is much appreciated.
TomHi Juergen,
Thanks for the suggestion - I had to "Customize" the viewable header to include the "From:" ("Von:") line to see who I was sending as. As far as the "use this SMTP only" checkbox is concerned - they're checked on both my accounts - so I'm not sure how much of an impact that has. To be honest, I thought this checkbox was meant to limit your outgoing mail (for that account) to this mail server only. I thought that if it was not checked, Mail will try to send the mail via another SMTP server if the one for this account is not reachable.....after all, why else would Apple allow you to check both servers' "use this SMTP only" checkbox?
But this is good enough for me - now I can see who i'ms ending as.
Thanks,
tom -
Outgoing SMTP server says "offline" can't send e-mails
Set up new iCloud e-mail. Incoming mail works. Outgoing SMTP server says "offline." Can't send e-mails from this account. Need info on how to set it up. Thanks.
MYou might want to try signing out of your iCloud account, then back in. Go to System Preferences>iCloud, click Sign Out, choose Delete at all of the prompts, restart your Mac, then sign back in.
This deletes the account and your iCloud data from your Mac, but not from iCloud. It will reappear on your Mac when you sign back in, after a brief delay as it redownloads. -

I run both a MAC and a PC with two different mail clients Entourage vs. Outlook. I have never had a problem with the clients syncing with the Exchange server until I did an archive of all emails in outlook that were older than this year. Now some subfolders have disapeared on the PC and the Exchange server but still show up in Entourage. How can I resync Entourage to the Exchange and have Exchange server "accept" the Entourage folders as correct?
Also I use an Iphone and backup to the icloud. So why did my contacts disapear from the iphone and are not restored via icloud? The missing contacts also disapeared from exchange.
Iphone 4s ver 5.1.1
Exchange 2003
MacBook Pro OSX 10.5.x ( I think - since the finder->about this Mac button doesnt work)
Entourage 12.3.3
Thanks so much.

Also if I delete the downloaded messages and then get new info. All the messages are downloaded again and the count of new messages increases (this increases every time I Get New Messaages) .See:

Mails phisically in the server but not appearing in webmail and reconstruct
Hello:
Solaris 10 8/07 s10x_u4wos_12b X86
Sun Java System Messaging Server 6.3
The user deleted every single mail from his mailboxes via webmail. Every folder appeared empty in the webmail, the inbox, recycle bean, sent mails... all of them (I checked it). However, it stated that the quota usage was 50%. That was because in the server there were 50 MB of .msg files, and the user's quota is 100 MB. I don't know why happened that, as far as I know, if the .msg files were expunged messages, they shouldn't count for the quota usage, is that right?
Anyway, I removed the messages using rm, then imexpire and reconstruct -r user/username/INBOX. I sent two emails to the user with attached files, they were correctly received and the quota usage changed right (files size was 2 MB, so quota usage was 2%). I deleted the messages via webmail, I was able to see them in the server but did not appeared via webmail, and the quota was right, so everything seemed to be OK.
The weird thing is:
root@machine # reconstruct -n user/username/INBOX
user/username/INBOX
ERROR: Inconsistent information: 0 idx records 2 messages 3 expunged
So, I run reconstruct -n user/username/INBOX, it finds the problem, it shows something like "reconstructing: OK", but if I run the reconstruct -n again, it still show the "Inconsistent information" error. ¿? What am I missing?
Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you very much, and I apologize for my poor English.Sorry for the incomplete info:

Sun Java System Messaging Server 6.3What is the exact version (./imsimta version)?
The user deleted every single mail from his mailboxes via webmail.Which webmail? UWC/CE or Messenger Express?
Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 6.3-6.03 (built Mar 14 2008; 32bit)
libimta.so 6.3-6.03 (built 17:07:13, Mar 14 2008; 32bit)
SunOS mail1 5.10 Generic_137112-03 i86pc i386 i86pc
Webmail is UWC.
Every folder appeared empty in the webmail, the inbox, recycle bean, sent mails... all of them (I checked it). However, it stated that the quota usage was 50%.Where did it state the usage was 50% -- it may be you were seeing an old cached value?
Did you verify this output with the output of mboxutil/imquotacheck for the account?
The 50% quota usage was reported in UWC and also in the output of mboxutil.
That was because in the server there were 50 MB of .msg files, and the user's quota is 100 MB. I don't know why happened that, as far as I know, if the .msg files were expunged messages, they shouldn't count for the quota usage, is that right? The ".msg" files are not removed from disk until the next imexpire run. If a message is expunged it won't count towards quota usage.
Right, because of that I don't understand why there were ".msg" files in the disk that were not displayed in UWC, as they were expunged, but they did count towards quota usage.
Anyway, I removed the messages using rm, then imexpire and reconstruct -r user/username/INBOX. I sent two emails to the user with attached files, they were correctly received and the quota usage changed right (files size was 2 MB, so quota usage was 2%). -n : report basic errors found but try not to rebuild most folder files if possible
(This may be used to catch errors before repair so they may be studied)If you run "reconstruct user/username/INBOX" was the mailbox fixed?Well, the mailbox is working fin, but I think that there's something that I'm misunderstanding. I'm really newbie in SJS Messaging Server. The -n flag is for report errors only, without performing any repair, isn't it?
http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-4429/acmeb?a=view :
Checks the message store only, without performing a fix on the mailbox or mailboxesCommand help:
-n : report only, no repairAnd the -r is for recursively repaire the mailbox, right? So, if I run the reconstruct -n and it found a problem, then I run the reconstruct -r and it said that the reconstruction was OK... When I run the reconstruct -n again, why did it find an inconsistency again? I don't get it.
Anyway, I don't see that problem now:
root@machine # reconstruct -n user/username/INBOX
username/INBOX
