Mail is duplicating messages at alarming rate. Help!

I recently discovered that Mail is duplicating my emails in the Users>Library>Mail>Mac folder. Only one copy shows when Mail is open, but when going through the Finder I found that I have over 166,000 copies of my email messages and it keeps duplicating more. It has now taken over 58 GB of space! I'm not sure how this started happening and would really appreciate advice on how I could proceed.
This is happening on my .Mac or MobileMe email address, but not on my gmail account.

Scott, in which folder is the message being duplicated? Is this an incoming message in your Inbox or is it a message you've composed or sent and thus is in your Drafts or Sent Messages folder?

they show up once yes - it's doing it categorically. every single message. the time stamps are the same.
as I said - it doesn't need to be connected to the internet necessarily. I can take it off line and it will still duplicate.
there is no rule in my preferences.

Need help sending e-mail a mobile messages

i'm a n00b in Java. Can you please tell how can i send e-mail and mobile messages in java?

First of all, before you do any programming, if you want to have your computer send e-mail messages then you must have access to an SMTP server.
Next, if you do have access to one, then JavaMail is a common way to write programs that send e-mail.
As for mobile messages ("text messages" to a cellphone?) you usually need a contract with some phone company to do that, so they can bill you for it.
When you find out about that, they should provide you with documentation on how to proceed. If it involves sending e-mail to a particular address, see part 1 of this reply.

After mountain lion is installed my mail is duplicating my past sent messages

For some reason my email is duplicating messages that I have received from couple of the senders atleast four to five times a day. Even after repeatedly deleting the email it still appears again. hence I have 45 to 70 unread emails. Please advise.

So how did you set that in the Users & Groups Pane? The choices are:
Defaults (which includes the Orange among other pics)
Recents
Camera (that would be the built in camera)

How to use Mail to sent messages when away from home

How do I have to configure my "Mail" on my PowerBook G-4 (OS 10.4.5) in order to use it in a WIFI enviroment?
At home when connected via Airport to my own Outgoing Mail Server (smtp 8. sympatico.ca) I have absolutely no problems. However, last year I was on a Cruise Ship and tried to use the existing WiFi System. I could receive messages using Mail, but I could not send messages using Mail.
At the moment I'm visiting my son in the Boston area and I'm having the same problem. I was forced to use the Sympatico Web Mail in order to sent E-mail messages. (receiving mail using "Mail", represents no problem)
There has to be a way to configure Mail to originate messages and sent them as well, but I cannot find anything which tells me how to do that.
The version presently installed for Mail is 2.0.7.
Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated!

The problem here is your ISP (looks like its Sympatico) blocking connections to their mail server from computers not connected directly to their network. I wouldn't blame your ISP though b/c as I understand it almost ALL ISPs block these type of connections to cut down on SPAM being sent.
What you need to do is to find the outgoing mail server for the network you are on.
For example, if you look on the "Mail" settings on your Son's computer and note his "Outing Mail Server" (in the "Accounts" pain of "Mail" prefs) settings and then go to your machine and put in that same "Outgoing Mail Server" info then you should be fine.
You can do this on your machine by selecting "Add Server..." from the "Outgoing Mail Server" drop down menu. When the window comes up just type in the same settings your Son uses. If he does not have a machine with mail setup on it then you can call his ISP and they'll tell you.
Remember to switch the "outgoing mail server" back to your home server when you return home. By the way, most places (like hotels) will give you their outgoing mail server info if you ask them, so next time you're on a cruise with wifi you might try asking the IT people.

Mail adding duplicate messages as not read in my inbox

My mail started adding old and duplicate messages in my inbox and won't stop. It is not happening in any other format that is using this email adress (smartphone, etc) continues even when offline. after 12 hours of it I am up to 35000 messages. Can anyone help?

You can try the following:
1. Open your messages icon
2. In the messages windows press the menu key(left of trackball) and click options.
3. Do you see Email Reconcilation? If so where it says Delete On, make sure it only says Handheld.

The only way to do so is with an IMAP account via server stored mailboxes which must be created with an email client used on your computer or via webmail access for the account using a browser. Once an additional server stored mailbox is created and available on the server, it will also be available on the iPhone automatically.
This is not available with a POP account.

Mail crashes on message with bad HTML. How to delete or fix ?

I've got a strange problem with Mail crashing when reading a particular message that appears to have some bad HTML. Here's the story:
I received an email conatining HTML. Mail displays the message just fine, but when I try to navigate away from the message (to the next message for example), Mail crashes. Anything I do after reading the message causes Mail to crash. I can't delete the message or move it to another folder without a crash.
The worst part is that everytime I restart Mail it defaults to displaying this message -- so now it is stuck in a loop !
I have deleted the message from the mail server (through webmail) so it has not affected Mail on my other computers, but I need to figure out how to delete it locally from this one. I dug around in the ~\Library\Mail folder and I can see the files for this account, but I can't figure out how to delete this particular message without deleting ALL my other messages -- I've got older mail that I still want to keep.
How can I manually delete this individual message, without removing everything else ?
Is there another way to "reset" Mail so it doesn't default to this message every time ? Maybe then I could delete it from within Mail.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
I hope a future update to Mail will fix this HTML problem. The same pages crashes Safari too....

Hello John.
You can launch Mail holding the Shift key down until the main window appears to prevent it from selecting any mailboxes or loading any messages upon start up.
And there are at least three ways to select a message and delete it without displaying its contents:
(1) You can hide the preview pane by dragging the separator bar between the message list and the preview pane to the bottom of the window, or by just double-clicking within the separator bar, so that the preview pane disappears and only the message list is visible. To make the preview pane visible again, drag the separator bar up from the bottom of the window, or just double-click on the separator bar again.
(2) If you select the message with the mouse, the message is displayed in the preview pane when the mouse button is released, not when it’s pressed. This allows you to drag the message to the Trash or to any other mailbox without Mail trying to display its contents.
(3) Ctrl-clicking on a message causes a contextual menu to appear, from which you can usually (but not always, don’t ask me why) choose Delete or Move To, before the contents of the message are displayed in the preview pane.

The Mail application blocks messages

In addition, the application closes with CMD + Q or with a mouse click??

I have this problem with version 10.7.2 Lion
Last week I spoke with technical support from Apple.
We have deleted the MobileMe account then I reinstalled.
There, things are back in order, but here I am again stuck with several emails in the outbox.

I can only see the welcome to mail screen (iphone 5). I have set up mail successfully because it shows mail icon with messages. But I cant get into the mail box!

The received emails should show in two locations:
1. In the All Inboxes tab of Mail.
2. The Inbox for each mail account,
If your emails are not showing in these locations try quitting the mail app and then reset your iPhone.
Go to the Home screen and double click the Home button. That will reveal the row of recently used apps at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold on the app in question until it wiggles and displays a minus sign. Tap the minus sign to actually quit the app. Then tap anywhere on the screen above that bottom row to return the screen to normal.
To reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider should one appear until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

Mail uploading old messages with Lion

Hi!
Installed Lion this morning - everything was going great until I re-launched Mail and all of the sudden all of my old Gmail messages that I had deleted or moved are cropping up in my inbox, unread. Gmail is still 'thinking' (scroll next to it) and every time I quit Mail, 500 new messages come up... before this started, I had less than 200 messages in my inbox - now I have over 2000... and it doesn't seem to be letting up... help!!

So embarrassingly, I'm here to answer my own question...
I signed into google maps with my main gmail address, and it asked me if I wanted that address to be a default or something for iChat, and two other programs - one of which must have been Mail, because it added this main Gmail account to my Mail accounts without asking and started uploading the messages - thank goodness I caught it before it uploaded all 8500 archived messages!
Seems with Lion it doesn't ask permission to do things as much as in the past... not used to such freedom - beware and enjoy!

Lion Mail creates a new folder in Yahoo Mail called "Sent Messages"

For some reason, since updating to 10.7.5, Mail no longer puts sent messages into the proper "Sent" folder of my Yahoo accounts. It creates a new folder in Yahoo Mail called "Sent Messages" and stores them there. This new folder is only visible from iOS devices' Mail or by logging into Yahoo through a web browser. Lion Mail doesn't sync this new folder, for whatever reason.
Just curious if anyone else is experiencing this or has found a fix.

Okay, thanks to nobody for their help. But I figured it out anyway. Somehow there was a rule which had the "if-then" result of "move to (my wife's name) mailbox" -- so when such an email arrived, Mail would have to create the (previously-deleted) mailbox in order to follow the rule. So I just deleted that rule.
