Mail is marking my "Sent" messages as Junk

Hi--
I've been noticing strange behavior by my junk mail system lately. First it was junking almost everything that came in without telling me.
Now it has taken to marking all my sent messages as junk.
Anybody have a clue?
Thanks,
Tim

Hi Tim.
This kind of problems are caused by some corruption in one or more of the files used by the junk filter. Try this first:
1. Go to Preferences > Junk Mail and disable junk mail filtering.
2. Quit Mail, then open it again.
3. Go to Preferences > Junk Mail, enable junk mail filtering, and configure it however you wish.
4. Reset the junk filter database (Preferences > Junk Mail > Reset).

Mail is marking all my Sent messages as Junk. In addition, any mail I send myself arrives in the Junk folder.
Also annoying is that some new messages received (about 50%) arrive in the Inbox marked as Read.

    For the Junk Mail problem.
Go to Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail.
    Deselect "Enable junk mail filtering"
    Quit and relaunch Mail.
Go to Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail and reselect
"Enable junk mail filtering". Select Reset to reset
the Junk Mail "learned" settings and you can leave
Junk Mail set to Automatic when doing so.
For the new messages received being marked as read,
for what type of account - .Mac, IMAP or POP?
Thanks! I've reset as you suggested. Hopefully that will be effective.
    I'm using a Pop account.

  • Help?  Apple Mail no matter what I do, marks my SENT emails as JUNK?

I've tried yours (and others suggestions) and no matter what I do Apple Mail always marks my SENT messages only as JUNK and my incoming MESSAGE I send to myself as junk. Filtering works great for everything else. My exact name and email address ARE in my address book and previous recipients list. I have my junk email filter set to all of these two criteria are not satisfied it marks it as junk and moves the message to a folder I have labeled as JUNK. I tried each of these suggestions:
    1. Unchecking the box that says "Disable Junk Mail Filtering"; then quitting mail, then restarting mail, then configuring my Junk Mail to customized actions and leaving my junk mail to a folder I have as JUNK mail. No Luck.
    2. I have tried the same as above, but then I hit the RESET button. No luck.
    3. I went to the Apple store and configured the email filters to the way I have it and it does the same thing. It marks all outgoing mail (Sent Mail) as junk and any messages you send to yourself as junk.
I think this is just a glitch in Apple Mail as I have not seen or heard about another solution. Can't believe 10.4.8 and Apple Mail is not working perfectly. Seems like a simple glitch.
    Anyone???

There is probably some corruption in one or more of the files used by the junk filter. The following procedure thoroughly gets rid of all those files, so that Mail creates them anew:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/.
    3. Locate LSMMap2 and move it to the Trash. This file stores information about what does and doesn’t constitute junk, and is what allows the junk filter to learn. Clicking the Reset button in Preferences > Junk Mail also deletes LSMMap2. The file was called just LSMMap in early versions of Mail, delete that as well if you see it.
    4. Locate DefaultCounts and move it to the Trash. This file keeps statistics about the number of messages that have been marked as junk, either automatically by the junk filter or manually by the user.
    5. Locate MessageRules.plist and/or MessageSorting.plist and move it to the Desktop. This is where Mail stores all the rules, including those used by the junk filter. The former is used by Mail 2.x, the latter by Mail 1.x. There is probably also a MessageRules.plist.backup and/or MessageSorting.plist.backup file there; move it to the Desktop too.
    6. Look for the account folders. The name of each account folder starts with the account type (POP, IMAP, Mac), followed by the account username and the incoming mail server. Open each of the account folders, locate the Junk.mbox or Junk.imapmbox folder within it, and move it to the Trash if present.
    7. Go to ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/. Locate any Junk.mbox mailboxes there (their name may include the account name in parenthesis), and move them to the Trash.
Note: Messages in Junk mailboxes with an .mbox suffix are stored locally and will be lost forever as a result of doing steps 6 and 7. If there is a chance that you have legit messages there that you want to preserve, either move the messages to another mailbox in Mail first, or move Junk.mbox to the Desktop (to be imported back later) instead of to the Trash. Junk mailboxes with an .imapmbox suffix aren’t a concern because they are stored on the server and Mail will rebuild them automatically.
    8. Open Mail. As a result of removing the rules file, the junk filter will be disabled now. You may want to either tell Mail to go offline immediately after opening it, or shut down the Internet connection before opening Mail, to prevent it from downloading anything until the junk mail filter has been enabled again.
    9. Go to Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail, enable junk filtering, and configure it however you wish.
    10. Go online again if you went offline in step 8.
If the above solves the problem and you don’t have any rules you’d like to preserve or recreating them is not a daunting task, just trash the rules files that were moved to the Desktop and be done with it.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • IOS 8 Mail is showing my sent messages as unread in my gmail account

I had been using gmail's mail application because of its ability to push. With iOS 8, I figured I'd give Apple's Mail client another try.
When I send something from my Apple Mail client, it appears as an unread message in my inbox. The sent mail should not be unread... I've verified that this doesn't happen in the gmail mail client.
I checked my gmail filters to see if something was affecting sent messages, but didn't see anything.
Any ideas what I need to change? Is this is a problem others are seeing?
    Thanks!

  • Mail 3, smtp, IMAP: sent messages are not saved on server

    Hello,
I had problems using Mail 3 after I upgraded to Leopard, so I used Thunderbird for the time being. With the update 10.5.1 I tried again: most problems solved BUT: sent messages are not saved on the server in mailbox "Sent".
Some background: I deleted the folder "<User>/Library/Mail" and "<User>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist" and configured Mail from scratch.
To be sure: I still have Thunderbird installed, and when I send with Thunderbird: a copy is placed in "Sent".
Another thing I noticed: it takes more than a minute to send from Mail 3 and a few seconds when I send from Thunderbird. I have another Macbook Pro with 10.5.0 installed: same problem with sending.
    Any help is appreciated.
    rene

Well, be stumped I did all that, but to be sure, I did it again:
I have a lot folders with subfolders and they are shown under my account name.
I created a new folder "test" in my IMAP account and designated it to be the new "Sent" folder. It replaces my previous Sent folder in the group Inbox, Drafts, Trash. My previous Sent folder now appears under my account name as a "normal" folder.
I send a message and the Activity monitor says: +"Delivering message: copying message"+. After a minute Mail is done. I check my (new) "Sent" folder and it's empty. I double check in webmail: it's empty.
So I go to the Finder and look in my IMAP folder: <user>/Library/Mail/<IMAP-account>/test.imapmbox and there is no folder "Messages", only Info.plist.
Then I try to move a message to the "Sent' folder: for a minute the Activity moinor says: Copying messages: copying message" and then Mail prompts: +"The message "testing" could not be+
+The connection to the server mail.hicetnunc.nl on port 143 timed out"+.
So it looks like Mail has a problem with the default "Sent" folder: it cannot copy messages to that folder at all! Aha!
But then I try to move a message to a "normal" IMAP folder: same thing! Mail cannot copy to any folder!
In both instances Mail says: +"The message "..." could not be be moved to the mailbox "..."+
+The connection to the server mail.hicetnunc.nl on port 143 timed out"+
Last thing: I try to move a message to a folder in the same account again. But in the process I quit Mail. I open Mail again and Mail is performing pending operations: copying message. After a while Mail prompts: +"Operation could not be completed. (MFMessageErrorDomain error 1028.)"+ and crashes... I open Mail again and it tries to peform pending operations. Again: an error message and Mail crashes. This keeps going on so I delete the whole account and set it up again. Nothing's changed...
I can receive and send, but sent messages are not copied to the "Sent" folder and I cannot move messages around within a IMAP account. But TADA!!!: I can move messages from account to account.

  • Mail slow to show sent messages

I'm suffering from the spinning pizza in my Mail sent box, ever since I sent a couple of password-protected PDF forms yesterday (1.4Mb each). Trying to delete these two messages from my Sent box makes the Mail Trash mailbox cog spin endlessly and the best I can achieve is that these two messages change to light grey font in the list but they won't go to the Trash! When I invoke the contextual menu on them, it invites me to undelete them - so Mail obviously thinks they are deleted, even if it can't de-list them.
The problem is contagious and clicking on any other of my sent messages takes forever to display them... although they do eventually display.
Nothing wrong with disks or permissions but when I go to Activity Monitor and try to inspect the Mail process while it is misbehaving, I'm told that Mail isn't responding (albeit the Mail app icon in the Dock doesn't agree with that diagnosis) -- and then it takes forever to quit Activity Monitor.
This problem persists through reboots; and the only clues in Console's logs are:
    09/07/2008 17:46:15 Mail[222] Failed to get message data for <LibraryMessage: 0x188e89c0, library id: 40472>
    and
    09/07/2008 17:54:24 Mail[222] could not create DOMRange for {1767, 34}
and a number of font-related messages although these fonts are not embedded in my PDFs, eg:
09/07/2008 16:28:25 /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail[222] ATS AutoActivation: Disable Font ID 65729 (Frutiger) because it doesn't belong to family "ITC Zapf Dingbats".
09/07/2008 16:28:25 /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail[222] ATS AutoActivation: Disable Font ID 65737. (no family name)
...although presumably Acrobat Pro uses Dingbats as the default font for creating checkboxes which are in my PDF form.
Any enlightenment will be much appreciated.
    Simon

    Dov,
I should also have asked if there are any Sent mailbox further down in the Sidebar, below Drafts? With most IMAP accounts, when there is a Sent folder immediately below the single Inbox (but indented) for an account after setup, then the proper procedure is to highlight that mailbox folder, and click on the Mailbox in the Men Bar, and select Use This Mailbox For __. When not a folder on the server, the options following this Command are Gray.
I cannot get a good mental image of what you are seeing, however, so take no action until we can both understand the situation. Do you know how to take screenshots?

  • Mail is not storing sent messages

    Hi,
I wonder if someone can help me. My mail on my macbook pro has stopped saving some of my sent emails, I have tried to bcc myself but I get a unable to delivery message because it says storage quoted exceeded so I have no idea if my emails are being sent or not. I have deleted the account off the mac and put it back on, and I have also tried deleting some sent messages but it doesn't seem to make a difference?
I would really appreciate some help, Thank you,
    Rachael

Nevermind. I figured it out. I had migrated from an IMAP version of this particular account to an Exchange version. I was still listing the IMAP version of the account as the outgoing server. I changed that to the Exchange outgoing server and it's all set.

  • Mail won't keep sent messages

Having been long frustrated with my AOL account, I recently decided to open an IMAP account with Mail. Everything works great with one exception: It successfully sends my emails and attachments, but doesn't keep copies of anything in the sent folder. I've tried preferences:Mailbox behaviors, unchecking and then checking the box to save sent messages on the server. Yet they still don't show in my sent box. I need to keep track of my outgoing messages, so this makes Mail worse than useless to me. What to do?

    Lynn,
Hello, and welcome to the Discussions. You likely have a very different issue:
If you are running 10.3.9, as your info reports, you most likely have an Overstuffed Mailbox, meaning it has become large enough to be a problem for Mail to properly index. Read the User Tip linked below:

  • Mail won't save sent messages

I just got this computer- a hand me down from my boyfriend- and I am having trouble adjusting to Mail. It does not save the mail that I write, and in fact tells me so every time I start writing a new mail message. The preferences are enabled to save sent mail-- but the computer also tells me there's an error every time i start up the computer.
Can anyone tell me what I can do to remedy this? What is going on?
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.5)
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

This whole thing is very confusing to me and I'm sorry if I seem vague. This new computer is fabulous- but I'm used to my ancient blue G3 and Entourage.
I believe that my account is an IMAP account. I followed your directions, substituting "IMAP" for "POP." I sent a sample email, and a pop down menu did not appear and warn me that my mail could not be saved. However, it is not in the saved messages folder.
Just to clarify, on the left of the Mail screen there is an Inbox, with smaller subfolders: Drafts, Sent & Trash. These folders mirror what is on my account online. Under this is a little paper airplane icon that says Sent. This continues to be empty, no matter what I do. The preferences are set to Never delete sent messages. Also, if I hit "save as draft," I get a message that says, "The message could not be saved."
Would trashing the Norton stuff help? I'm not sure if that is related to this question.
    Thanks!

  • Mail is marking all my email as Junk

Mail is suddenly marking all my email as junk. Even email from senders I've got in my Address Book. What can I do? I have not changed any settings
    Thanks for your help.

Have you tried resetting both the junk rule and the junk filter database? The Reset button in Preferences > Junk Mail only resets the latter...
You may get rid of the file where rules are stored so that Mail creates it anew as follows:
    1. If you have a .Mac account and .Mac synchronization of Mail data is enabled either in Mail > Preferences > General or in System Preferences > .Mac, disable it before proceeding.
    2. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/.
    4. Move any MessageRules.plist (Mail 2.x) and/or MessageSorting.plist (Mail 1.x) files to the Desktop. This is where Mail stores all the rules, including the rule that governs what the junk filter does.
    5. Open Mail. As a result of having removed the rules files, the junk filter will be disabled now. You may want to either tell Mail to go offline immediately after opening it, or shut down the Internet connection before opening Mail, to prevent it from downloading anything until the junk mail filter has been enabled again.
    6. Go to Preferences > Junk Mail and enable junk filtering.
    7. Go online again if you went offline in step 5.
    8. If the problem is fixed now and .Mac synchronization of Mail data was enabled at the beginning, enable it again, go to System Preferences > .Mac > Advanced, click Reset Sync Data, and choose the appropriate options to reset the Mail data stored on the .Mac server with the data locally stored on the computer, i.e. sync data must flow from the computer to the .Mac server.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • Where does Mail save attachments to sent messages?

In believe attachments to sent messages used to be saved in the ~/library/application support/mail folder. I don't find any such folder with Mavericks.

  • Mail Failed to Save Sent Message

    Hello,
While attempting to send a message out today, Mail failed to save the message to ANY respective folder therefore the message was lost. There is nothing in drafts, sent, or saved folders that indicate that the message was actually sent.
I use AOL mail in the client software. The settings usually work, but there have been occasions where this has happened before.
Any inclination as to what is causing this? Is there anyway to recover that email that took TWO hours to compose?
    Thanks,
    -J

    Hi J:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
I had a very similar thing happens a few weeks ago. I attributed it to AOL (which I also use). In my case, I think the message was sent.
Recovery….. Do you use Time Machine? I looked in Time Machine when my message went missing, but the auto-save had not happened in the necessary time period so nothing was there. You could sign on to AOL on the web and see if the message is there someplace.
It is too late for you now, but if I am pecking out a longer E-mail (I type very slowly) I save a draft periodically. I started that after my experience above.

  • Mail doesn't remember a message is Junk

Whether I am working from my Macbook Air (OS X 10.7), iPad (3rd gen using iOS 5) or iPhone 4 (iOS 5) I will always get junk mail. I mark the sender as junk every time, but the sender still shows up in my inbox every time.
Is this a preference in Mail, iCloud maybe?
Anyone out there have an idea?

Mail's Junk filter has nothing to do with the sender. It is based on an analysis of the content of the message. True spam rarely comes from the same sender, so that is a fruitless way of filtering spam. If you are getting repeated messages from the same sender, try making a rule to deal with that sender.
