Mail is running slow as molasses since I installed Yosemite.

Has anyone else found mail running slow since upgrading to Yosemite? It can take several minutes to open a message, close a message, or delete a message.  When I click on get mail, the little rainbow wait cursor appears and disappears over and over for several minutes and I can't click on anything else.
Are there updates or patches for mail that I'm missing? The app store says I have no outstanding updates.
Thanks

Quit Mail if it's running. This procedure will have no effect unless you quit Mail when you begin.
Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
sqlite3 L*/C*/*.mail/*/L*/*/*/C*.db vacuum; sqlite3 L*/M*/*/*/E*ex vacuum
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
You should see a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appear below what you entered. If not, press return. You can then quit Terminal and relaunch Mail. Test.

  • Since the last automatic update, Firefox has been running slow as molasses, with a refresh box coming up constantly. What can I do to correct this?

Since the last automatic update (approx. one week ago) my Firefox has been running slow as molasses and I keep getting a "refresh" box popping up when the pages get hung up (very often)
What can I do to correct this? I clean my cache out at least once daily - most days more. Virus scan says I'm clear of viruses - Glary Utilities tells me that all changes to my registry have been fixed (sneaky apps trying to get in) I'm going crazy because I am used to my FF being fast! HELP!!!

If you have problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

    * Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
    * Do not remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • Mac not booting/running slow as molasses

Alright. This is going to be a large and multi-scope question, so please bear with me, everyone.
Here are the (general) specifications of my MBP:
    Mid-2012 15.4" MacBook Pro
    500GB HDD, 4GB of RAM (I believe)
    OS X 10.9 (Mavericks)
Now, for the questions. The two are chronologically related; I believe also in other ways related as well. In order of what happened:
    1. My machine (what I'm typing on now; I'll get to that later) has been running slow as molasses for the past few days. We're not talking 'not as fast as when I bought it' slow, we're talking 'slow as a fully-loaded mule going uphill' slow. Things started to occur the other day, when, for the second time in this computer's existence, it was dropped. You don't need to educate me on why I shouldn't drop a computer; I know what can occur and I've accidentally dropped many other devices before, and had to suffer the consequences. The first occasion was when a friend of mine as using the machine and dropped it while walking with it. The screen was spiderwebbed (LCD fine; display glass has spiderweb cracks across it), but other than that, no real issues. The second time, about a week ago, was when it slipped off my lap onto a tile floor (not that laminate stuff, the hard grouted tile). It was in a case and the display glass only suffers minor advancement of damage (barely noticeable...still like that...as a student and working to support myself as a programmer, I can neither afford monetarily nor the downtime of having the computer sent to Apple for repair, especially for something that doesn't affect the functionality of the machine).
The next part isn't necessary to the problem description, but bears saying - I am not a novice shouting 'my computer is slow, plz help' without any description; but I am not the best user on the face of the earth. Most of my experience in my life has been on the Windows platform; the OS X operating system handles similarly enough in terms of general functions but has enough internal difference (I know this is a major understatement - they are two fundamentally different OSs) to still cause me problems when trying to perform maintenance or "power-user" tasks.
Now, back to the actual problem, the computer immediately turned off, which I found to be immediately suspicious. Upon rebooting, the computer successfully turns on and functions without issue, but is as the title and first few sentences describe, is slow as all ****. I have recently done two things to this computer (major things) which I feel could contribute to the issue, namely:
Partitioned the HDD to install Fedora 19 - I'm in the process of working on an open-source project involving an IBM SDK which requires Fedora - as I live during the week in the Bay Area and commute to and from home, I only have intermittent access to a desktop which I would otherwise use for it. The computer's speed of operating didn't seem to bat an eye at this process.
Installed two things, namely the upgrade to OS X 10.9 and Photoshop CS6, which I use to generate the GUIs for my applications (iOS development primarily).
Both of these didn't cause any issues with the speed, but after the drop, this thing handles like it has Alzheimer's. Now, I know that dropping the computer isn't a good thing; if anyone can elucidate me further to how such a thing could be detrimental I'll be the first (and only one) accepting full responsibility for it. Mostly though, it's just been an annoyance of little enough significance in terms of productivity that I could still work without it.
Which brings me to point number two:
So, in an effort to generally bring up the speed, I noticed that Fedora had created two partitions, one called 'disk0s5' or something of the like, and one called 'untitled', taking up about 30GB. I know that space can be an issue due to operating systems handling by copying data around, shuffling it, etc. but as I still have over 400GB free, I only did this as a test.
I removed the partitions (did not touch the one titled Macintosh HD...we all know what that leads to) and rebooted, which brings me to present time & day.
Might as well list this to establish a chronology:
I start the restart process, and head to the bathroom in the meantime.
    I hear the startup chime.
Upon returning, the computer is off, so I know something is up, but I manually boot it to see what.
Upon the white initial boot screen, it loads a progress bar, much like the Mavericks install.
The typical spinning throbber loads and the load bar progresses to about a tenth (takes 15-20 seconds) and the computer shuts off.
Now, for me, this is bad mojo. I haven't done a full system backup on this machine (I know it's bad form, no need to educate me on this, call it the 'not wearing a seatbelt' for computing), but I know that ideally, the partition should be intact, so I intend to clone the drive to an image and back it to disk or portable HDD before reinstalling 10.9 or sending in to Apple.
For the obvious... I am on the computer and it isn't booting as of now, but I was able to get into the recovery partition via option-boot and use Safari.
Please advise. Again, I'm not a novice, but Mac OS X isn't my primary forte so you will need to break things down somewhat for me. I will provide anyone with more information upon request, if need be, limited to what I can access in the partition.
    Thanks in advance,
    Eli Fedele

Boot from an external system disk:
Format the external disk Mac OS Extended (journaled) running Disk Utility form the Recovery Partition.
(Boot then hold down Command and R simultaneously).
Install OS X onto that external disk.
Boot from that external disk (Boot then hold down Option).
Using the Finder drag as many folders as you can to the external disk.
As a last-ditch effort you can use recovery software to recover files the Finder will not copy.

I run the battery faster since I installed OS X 10.8.4.
    what can i do?
    Thanks!

Open Activity Monitor and choose All Processes instead of My Processes. Sort the processes by CPU and see if there is a process causing the CPU to be constantly in use draining your battery. Try an SMC reset as well and see if there is any improvement.

  • I cannot find my scanned photos on iPhoto since i installed yosemite

I use a  hp scanjet 4370 to scan photos to iPhoto but since i installed yosemite on my mac book i cannot find any of my new scanned photos.
    Thanks for any help.

First, don't try to find and reimport or move photos via the My Photos search in the left hand pane of a Finder window.  That's a sure way to further damage a library.
Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Kernel panic, machine check, multiple error reporting banks, on a Mac Pro with Xeon processor with Error Correction Code Memory means Uncorrectable RAM memory error.
In a Mac Pro 3,1 your memory is in pairs in adjacent sockets. Single-bit errors are corrected in Hardware without any slowdown. Uncorrectable (double-bit) errors cause this distinctive kernel panic, machine check to keep from poisoning your data.
Use about this Mac > (More info ) > (Report) > Memory to view this STATIC report
Go about your business as usual.
At least every quarter hour, invoke the report again or Refresh its data.

    You cannot merge accounts.
You need to sign into the old account on your computer.

  • Mail won't accept Gmail Password Since upgrade to Yosemite

    Hello there!
I upgraded my iMac 21.5" (late 2012 model) to Yosemite yesterday and since doing so, I can't get the Mail/Calender app to accept the password for any of my Google accounts.  The password is definitely correct as I've logged in via Safari and also on my iPhone 5S, iPad Air and iPad Mini and it was all working fine prior to installing Yosemite.
I've had a message from google to say that they've blocked the login as I was trying to access through an app that isn't secure it and that I can enable access to insecure apps if I want to - but surely Mail is secure?  It wasn't an issue before, so I'm guessing it is something to do with the Yosemite upgrade but I was just wondering if anyone else is having the same issue and if so, if they fixed it without having to enable the access to insecure apps.

Never mind!  I fixed it, I needed to go into the Mail Connection Doctor, into each account and then update both the password and the outbound SMTP server which was sent as "Gmail (offline)" to just "Gmail" and everything seems to be working.

  • Slow Start-Up Since Upgrading to Yosemite

Since upgrading to OS X 10.10 I have noticed a much long start-up period. OK so what's a couple of minutes? Well, with previous OS iterations start-up was quicker.
    Our equipment:
    1. A late 2011 15" MacBook Pro (500GB HD -- 275GB free -- and 4GB RAM)
    2. A late 2012 27" iMac (1TB HD -- 330GB free -- and 8GB RAM)
Overall, I am also noticing the spinning beachball on both machines far more than with Mavericks as I wait to open new Pages files, launch applications or even open an e-mail. The ball was even spinning when I clicked on About this Mac.
If I need to perform any disk-related maintenance actions on both machines I'd be very pleased to get the instructions or to hear what anyone else has done to speed things up.
    Many thanks.
    Simon

Slow performance after installing Yosemite on an older Mac is often caused by inadequate memory. Although you can install the upgrade on a Mac with 2 GB of memory, experience has shown that at least 4 GB is needed for full performance.
Select About This Mac from the Apple menu. If you have less than 4 GB of memory, and your model has upgradable memory, install as much as it can take, or at least that much. Any reputable RAM vendor will have a web form in which you can select the Mac model and be directed to compatible parts.

  • My cursor keeps jumping all over the place in Mail since I installed Yosemite

I installed Yosemite yesterday, and now, whenever I try to write an email, my cursor keeps jumping all over the place.  I can't write more than a few words without my cursor jumping back in the middle of one of the previous words.  I makes Mail almost unusable.  Am I the only one with this problem?

Similar problem. Mine seems to happen in mail - my cursor jumps to the line below and carries on typing - almost as if I'd pressed the down arrow to move the cursor. It seems to happen more when I type an apostrophe too.

  • My mac has been restarting on its own since i installed Yosemite 10.10.1

I installed Yosemite 10.10.1 last month. Since then, My macbook has been restarting on its own. Furthermore overtime I am getting an error message that my JAVA runtime needs to be updated . Although I have Installed JAVA again and again I am constantly getting the error.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Mail is running slow after adding an Exchange account

I recently added an Exchange 2007 account to Mail in addition to 2 other accounts; MobileMe and Gmail. Since then, Mail has been very slow to respond to all interaction. While in the middle of typing, it will pause and then catch up to all my keystrokes. Clicking on a message takes a few seconds to get any response as well. This all goes for any email account, Exchange, Gmail, MobileMe.
I have tried rebuilding the mailboxes. Not sure what else I can try. Is this a common occurrence? Does is matter much that I have over 24,000 messages?

Seems like this process worked out. I copied over the Mail folder in Library >Application Support, replaced Mail in Library and com.apple.mail.plist in Preferences. Feels much better <3
I'm thinking Mail just had enough after years of adding and deleting several email accounts. I also think Apple had changed the manner in which data is stored for Mail. The folder structures and file locations don't appear to be the same in the two user accounts.
