Mail is shonked up.. Can't even force quit/gone blank

I think it was after I attempted to do a software update the other day and I was in a rush and I had to turn the beast off mid update... oops...
Now when Mail opens, it's just all blank... everything is blank..it still says.. delete..new etc.... I can create new mail by apple clicking on the mail icon in my dock, but the mail doesn't actually work and I can't even force quit.
Anyone help? most appreciated if you could.

Okay, you're gonna need to force a restart, which means holding the power button (on the actual CPU, not the display if it's not an iMac or iBook) for about 5 seconds. If this doesn't work, pull the plug straight out the back, or if it's a laptop, take the battery out. Try mail again. If the same thing happens, take it to a Genius (an apple store genius, not einstein).

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • On my Apples, Firefox is locking up, sometimes can not even force quite

Latest version of Firefox is locking up. Sometimes can not even force quite the application. This is happening often on both our Apple computers. Have found the hitting the Toolbar Setting Icon at the right end of the Yahoo Toolbar will free up the system again. This NEVER happened with the previous version of Firefox. It is getting to the point were we are considering going to Safari which we don't like as much

I haven't. One of the reason I use Firefox vs Safari is that you can't use Yahoo toolbar on Safari. What I have done is hit the Tabs Settings Icon at the very right end of the Yahoo Toolbar and this seems to free things up again

  • IPhoto stalls when I try to open a slideshow..can't even force quit

I began creating a slideshow in iphoto yesterday and during editing of a video clip within the slideshow, iphoto completely froze up & I let the color wheel spin for literally hours.  I did a force quit and now every time I open iphoto and click on my slideshow title to open it, iphoto goes into stall mode...can't do anything...can't even use the menu to force-quit.  Have to right click iphoto icon at bottom and force quit that way.  What can I do to either delete the slideshow and start over, or open it to begin with??  I can't even seem to delete it.  When I search for the slideshow by name, in finder, etc. it's non existent.  I had just begun so I'm not bummed if I lost it or it wasn't saved to begin with, but it's just annoying to have iphoto stall on me over and over.  Thanks for any ideas!  I'm a new mac user so it's all greek to me!

  • Logic pro 9 keeps crashing. I get a "disc not ejected properly" message among other error messages. I can't even force quit. It makes me do the hard shutdown. Any ideas? Same problem with both external hard drives

Getting lots of crazy error messages pertaining to the external hard drives. This problem is bad. Usually can't run the software very long at all before it crashes. Logic version 9.1.8 running on OS 10.7.5 on a Macbook Pro

Such an error is being reported by OS X (nothing to do with Logic) and indicates that your Mac and your external drives are losing connection for some reason... There are some external drives that will incorrectly 'go to sleep' without reporting it to OS X which then thinks the drives have been unplugged without ejecting, hence the msg.
Also, you could have a flaky physical connection somewhere.. so check ports and cables....
So... to troubleshoot.. try the following...
Save and place a small text file on each of the drives.. Open both text files in textedit..  and keep them open (You can minimize textedit ) Now, see if you still get that problem.. when the files are kept open.
If you do not get this problem.. then the likelohood is it will be the HDs 'going to sleep' without proper reporting to OS X.. so check for a firmware update from the HD's manufacturer.. that will stop this from happening.
If they still disconnect, its more likely it is a physical ports and cable issue.

  • Itunes won't start, then I can't even Force Quit. Just installed Leopard.

    Really making me mad.

Answered my own question. My ipod shuffle was the problem. I noticed it was in it's dock but was not on the desktop. I unplugged it. Clicked itunes..Boom. Running. Apple should put in place a way to show possible resolutions, instead of just "(Not Responding)".

I did a factory reset on my late 2008 MacBook from a Snow Leopard disc. It installed fine, but as soon as I began to use the computer (safari) it froze. Couldn't even force quit. So I held down the power button to turn it off, and now it won't start up. It goes to the grey Apple screen and just sits there loud as can be. Help! Please keep in mind I've not done anything like this before and am going to need a little hand-holding. Thanks in advance.

Hi. Don't worry it's nothing serious. Insert the Instal Disc (Snow Leopard) and press the C button while turning on the computer. Once you see the desktop, go to Utility and choose Disk Utility. Select the Macintosh Partition on the left window pane and then click on Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions on the bottom right corner. Wait for both processes to finish. Click on the Apple icon (top left corner) and choose quit. Your computer should restart. See if it reboots normally. If not you can always reinstall the OS following the same steps. Good luck!

  • Since i updated latest version 6.0.2, it keeps getting stuck and goes really slow and the coloured beach ball spins for ages, so all i can do is force-quit - how can i install the version before this version again?

On a Mac Book pro - running 10.6.8
Firefox was fine until the last couple of updates that happened without my consent (?).
Suddenly there were weird errors and crashes of Flash
and slow loading pages. Now it's gone into rubbish mode where
the beach ball spins at the slightest fast type or double-click and then all i can do is force quit.
It's as if it can't cope with anything anymore.
How do i uninstall and keep my bookmarks etc and re-install an earlier version of it as it was before it got updated?
    Thanks

Hey Thanks for the link thing!
So i had tried it in safe mode, and thought that it was still in SMode but then realized that that stopped once i had closed it and reopened in aft/eve/ last night and started up again today, also. So i just tried it again in safe mode and it seems to not be doing it...but then it's so random anyway. But if i'm in safe mode like this there is no toolbar but i guess that's cool if that is what is making it sluggy and beach ball-y. But how do i stay in safe mode all the time? And if it is only in safe mode then does that mean i can't have the 3 addons i use - (java, QT, Flash- all the other vid things like divx etc are 'disabled' ) I thought those add ons were necessary to play/read things on the net?? Forgive my ignorance in this matter. But saying that, when it was going wrong, and i was clicking on audio links sometimes in the 'blank white page scenario' a popup would come and tell me that i would need ' QuickTime to play this track' and i would click 'continue' and it would link me to Apple to get QT...but i already have QT installed in my MBPro so i thought that was a bit weird...! when i just tried it now in safe mode it went straight to the audio link white page with player in the middle and played the track. But then as i said, it was a bit random before so i don't know if this was just a time when it worked...
Anyway, what do you think about my questions on operating in safe mode...should i have to do that?! i'll stay in Safemode until i hear back from you and see how well it performs.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Rainbow wheel appears when I open Firefox - then it hangs and all I can do is force-quit.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox on my Macbook Pro. The same thing keeps happening - I open Firefox and the rainbow wheel appears - that's it. I have tried to reset Firefox (I was able to click a "reset" button yesterday but nothing happened. I tried to reset it today but an unable to do so). All I can do is force quit the application. I think resetting it to default might work but I cannot write anything in the address bar or click on any of the tabs because the rainbow wheel is the only thing that appears. This has never happened before and I don't know what's going on.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Press the '''Alt''' or '''F10''' key to bring up the tool bar. Then select
'''Bookmarks'''. Hot key is '''<Control>''(Mac:<Command>)''<Shift> B.'''
Once the window is open, at the top of the page, press the button labeled
'''Import and Backup.''' Select '''Export Bookmarks To HTML,''' and follow
the prompts and save it to a '''HTML''' file. Copy the file to another computer.
Repeat the instructions above, BUT select '''Import Bookmarks From HTML,'''
These can't get your data back, but will help in the future.

  • Can't close mail, not even force quit....

I tried sending a mass email through the Mail application. It came back cannot send the message using the server smtp.aol.com then my email address. There's a drop down of the hundreds of emails I sent in BCC and I can't reach the bottom of the drop down. Nor can I close out the email. Even if I do a force quit of mail, and then come back to mail, this email returns. Any thoughts? Anyone ever have this issue?

If you got a message that says you can't send it through the AOL server, then it never got sent; it was either bounced back to you, or the server refused it after getting the To: and BCC information.
If the email is in your Inbox, you can open ~/Library/Mail/Your AOL Account Name/INBOX.mbox/Messages and delete the most recent message, then restart Mail and the problem should be resolved. If it was never sent anyway, it would be in that same path, except in the Drafts.mbox/Messages and you can still delete the most recent one from there.
To avoid this problem, don't send hundreds of emails at once unless you know your email provider actually allows this. Send the support people an email and ask them, or call them if you have a phone number.

  • MAIL APP will NOT OPEN- NOT RESPONDING/FORCE QUIT

    Macbook Pro 2011
    Using Mavericks OS X 10.95
I don't really use the Mac Mail very often because have always had problems with it so I will tend to use Gmail, Yahoo or whatever service it is.  I cannot even get mail to open at this point.  It just says Application Not Responding and then I force quit. and it still wont open.  The only annoying part is often on websites theres an email link to click and that opens the MAIL application to get that website.
Due to other problems, the Apple Geniuses recently wiped off my computer and made me install a backup so it should be 'fresh' and I wasn't having this happen before.  But then again, installing t he backup has created numerous problems that didnt exist before.  Ive tried rebooting already.  There are no pending software updates.  Everything is up to date except that it is not running Yosemite.

    Do a backup.
    Quit Mail.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

  • Random apps fail to respond, can't use force quit - weird!

    Hi.
Background = My G5 had occasional weird behaviour for a long time, usually ending in failing disk verification and making me run disk repair from startup DVD to fix it. After a few months of this I got tired and cloned my disk, erased the HD, reinstalled Tiger and copied the files back.
What happened? I got a new problem. Now, apps (seemingly chosen at random) suddenly quit themselves, leaving their windows open on screen and impossible to select or make active. Force quit doesn't work because the app isn't running (despite its presence). Only option is to restart/log out and log in again. The apps this affects have included Photoshop, iCal, Mail, Safari, Preview, Word and today, Finder.
Today's experience is particularly galling since I've just spent about 8 hours creating a new user account and manually moving all my settings across (because I thought maybe it was something in there, or the permissions or something). Now my screen is covered with Finder windows that can't be got rid of.
    Please, someone?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jason
PS This is a standard user account, clean install of Tiger about 10 days old. Problem doesn't occur on the Powerbook.
    Dual G5 2.5Ghz, Powerbook G4 1.33Ghz, iPod 40GB, 250GB external drive   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

So, assuming it's a software conflict, how can I
    start homing in on it?
First restart and hold down the shift key when you get the bong. This will start you up in Safe Mode which turns off all third party software additions as well as additional fonts. It will also trash some font caches so if you did anything in Font Book you will need to redo them.
Then just use it for awhile and see how it functions, if no problems then you know it is something that got turned off. A couple of things won't function in Safe Mode but I don't remember what they are, do some searching in Apple's Knowledge Base here and find out for sure.
Open your system preferences and go to Accounts/user/Login Items and see what's there. All of them will have been turned off so write down what is in there or take a screen shot so you have a record of what they all were, then delete them (leave any Apple ones there). When your system restarts you will just need to see how it functions then add each of those back one at a time until things go wrong.
Also, if any apps you installed added a preference pane they will now be missing but will come back when you restart normally. If the problem happens again right away then it could likely be a preference pane. Also open up Font Book and see what fonts it is using and not using and keep track of that. It could be a damaged font, too. The Safe Mode turns off all but the basic system fonts.
One note, it sounds like what ever is wrong has already caused some directory damage so you will need to repair that before doing any of the above. If you have Disk Warrior that is the best directory repair to use, if not start up off of your install disk and do repairs using the Disk Utility that is on the DVD.
It would be a good idea to go here:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/durepairfns.html
Browse Dr. Smoke's X-Lab FAQS and you will find all I said above but explained better and with more detail, and probably a few other things I forgot. He has lots of free info here including how to go about finding a software conflict.

  • Verizon VZAccess Manager (for broadband modem) will not even Force Quit

When I wake my MacBook Pro and launch VZAccess Manager it often hangsand Force Quit will not work (I didn't know that was possible). The only way to shut down is to press and hold the power button.
With each successive release of 10.5 my USB 727 modem driven by the VZAccess software is getting more finicky. I'm now making sure to disconnect and quit VZAccess before the MacBook Pro Intel goes to sleep. Since 10.5.6 this happens multiple times per day. I'm using the latest available VZAccess software.
A workaround that I would like: before installing VZAccess I got the modem to work just using the OS X network panel (WWAN / Other / Verizon 1xEVDO Modem Script). But now I can't get that to work, even when I Uninstall VZAccess.
Does anyone know a way to undo the actions of VZAccess beyond what VZAccess Uninstall does? Does VZAccess overwrite the Verizon 1xEVDO Modem Script supplied by Apple, and fail restore it when using Uninstall?
BTW, I've not been able to send the error report to Apple, because I'm in a rural location and don't have another way to connect to the Internet to report.

Contact Verizon. The problem is likely with their software not staying compatible. If they cannot provide a newer version of their software that is compatible then all you can do is downgrade to a previous version of Leopard with which their software worked. You can do that as follows:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
