Mail is slow in sending messages

Hi Folks, Recently I have been experiencing on my 21.5-inch, Mid 2010 with Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 a significant slow down in the dispatching of e-mail messages using Mail can anyone provide me with a salutation for this extremely annoying problem. All suggestions/advice will be greatly appreciated.

I'm having the same type issue.  I'll hear Mail chime and there will be nothing new.
I even have rules to make the Dock icon bounce when I receive email from certain people... that will trigger, but no new messages.  Eventually they show up, sometimes hours later, but there was at least one Gmail message that Mail never delivered.  That really has me concerned and looking at alternatives.
All of this started for me after Apple's patch to fix Mail.

  • Mail.app Slow to Send Messages

Sending mail takes forever. After I click send, it can take up to a minute for the send sound to be triggered and the message be sent to the mail server.
I run my own mail server, so I can see that exactly as the sound is played the message is received by the SMTP server.
What on earth is Mail.app doing for that 30-60 seconds after I click send? In Thunderbird there is at most a 4 second delay.

The open-apple-0 Activity Viewer in Mail.app just says:
    Delivering Message
    Connecting to server "SMTP.server.name"
This SMTP server is on a private 1000Mbps LAN. The mail client I use in Linux (also on a separate machine from the server) is able to establish an SMTP connection and send the message almost instantaneously. The fastest OS X can do it is 10-60 seconds.
The same sort of slow connection affect is visible using the "Connect to Server..." feature of the Finder. Perhaps the underlying problem is not with Mail.app but the socket creator in OS X?

    Bom dia Jean_ebrax,
o VI SMTP Email Send Message não suporta servidores SMTP que requerem autenticação. Se você quiser continuar utilizando este VI, você pode utilizar um servidor SMTP Local para testar o seu código. O link abaixo é de um servidor free:

Safari and mail have become slow only the last few days.  Mail is slow to send and receive, but e-mails do come through.  Safari is very slow to load on only a few web sites - google, wikipedia, youtube.  But fine on others.
    OS X  10.6.2

    Mail   4.2

    Hi Andy...
    safari, Mac OS X (10.6.3)
    10.6.2 / 4.0.3...
Whether you are running Mac OS X 10.6.2 or 10.6.3 your system software is completely outdated.
Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click Software Update.
Your Mac OS X needs to be at v10.6.8 / Safari should be 5.1.7
And make sure there's enough free space on the startup disk to install software updates.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop.
Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.

  • Apple Mail Time Out / "Cannot Send Message Using The Server..."

When trying to send messages of 5-10MB using my Apple Mail, it sends fine when on my home connection. But when on my (3G) mobile datacard, it seems to get half or 3/4s the way, but doesn't quite make it to the end, then times out with the message "Cannot Send Message Using The Server...". It seems that the Apple Mail doesn't allow enough time before deciding to cancel the attempted send. Is there a way to fix this eg by changing settings?

I'm seeing something similar here (using an Exchange 2007 server -- SMTP works just fine). Unfortunately, I have no solution to offer. I would be glad to hear of any, though.

  • Mail Stops Responding While Sending Messages

Mail has been freezing on me a lot lately when I am sending a message. I tried to find a pattern, and it seems the problem is multi-tasking. Since I have Activity Viewer open all the time, I can see what Mail is doing. If I send an e-mail and try to do something else in Mail before the message is sent (as shown in Activity Viewer), then Mail stops responding. This something else could be opening the original message, opening a different message, deleting a message, filing a message, viewing a different folder, etc.
Does anyone know why this happens and if there is anything I can do?

I am seeing the same issue just as you described. Have you managed to find a solution? It just seems to be a recent problem.

  • Mail app won't send messages out

I am logged into gmail on my iPhone 4 mail app. I tried to reply to a message yesterday and it wouldn't work. The message sat in my outbox saying "unsent" because I needed to go to my mail account settings and enter a password. Well I went to settings, mail, account, and my password was stored there. I re-typed it anyway to see what would happen. I went back to the mail app, and the message still has not sent. But now I don't have an Outbox folder on the main page either! The only way I know it's still unsent is because when the app refreshes, it says 1 Unsent Message on the bottom of the screen.
So my question is, what is going on, where did my outbox go, why did it tell me to enter a password, and most importantly, why won't my message send?!
I was connected to wifi, if that makes a difference. And does it make a difference if it was a reply versus a new message? I just tried a test email, connected through 3G, and it says it sent.

Something stuck in the cache? Try a reset. To reset the iPhone, press and hold the home and sleep/wake buttons until you see the Apple logo (ignore the slide to power off prompt).

  • Mail sometimes won't send message

I had this problem with Mavericks, and it persists with Yosemite, using Apple Mail in both cases.  Specifically: I compose a message, click on Send, and the message goes to the Outbox and just sits - it won't actually send.  I checked with my provider to make sure the settings were all correct, and they are.  Even weirder, when this is happening I'm able to send mail - same account - from my iPad.   I send and receive email several times a day, and it mostly works fine. THis problem happens, on average, maybe once a week or so.  Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Check the outgoing mail server setting. Make sure that your username and password are in there.
Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Your email account>Account>Outgoing mail server - tap the server name next to SMTP and check in the primary server and make sure your username and password are entered and correct - even if it says that the password is optional.

  • Mail still won't send messages.

    Hi:
I see that mac.mail had a system-wide problem yesterday with sending mail for an hour, but I haven't been able to send mail since yesterday around 2 and still can't. I repeatedly get the timed-out on port 25 error message. I can receive email.
Is there anything I can do, you can do there?
    Best,
    Amy Sutherland

    Hi Amy.
Read the following article, which applies to all versions of Mac OS X (not just Mac OS X 10.4.2 and earlier as the article states) and can be useful for other mail accounts as well (not just .Mac):

  • Mail is slow to load messages from Gmail, Exchange and inbox.

I have three email accounts in Mail, iCloud (12k), Gmail (57k) and Exchange (31k).  I have just around 100,000 total inbox and sent messages.
Often, like 99% of the time, I'll get an email alert in notification center and when I click on it mail is unable to display this message because it hasn't come through yet.  Sometimes I'll be looking in Inbox (all three accounts combined) and the message that just came through, or the last dozen messages, aren't there.  If I go to the individual account, I can read the messages that came through.  Other times, inbox is just empty for a few minutes.
I've given up on using the UNREAD smart mailbox because I'll be reading a message in there and it just disappears because I guess after viewing it for more than 3 seconds means it has been read.
This is growing increasingly frustrating.  Does anyone know of a fix for this?  Do I have too many messages?  I'm really good with keeping a zero inbox and deleting messages I don't need.
I actually rebuilt my entire computer, erased the hard drive even, just to fix this email issue.  It didn't help at all.

  • Mail very slow to send after install of 10.10.3

Composed mail now sits in the outbox grinding away long before it finally sends. This issue has been duplicated both on my MB air and iMac desktop,
    Has anyone found a solution?

I had the same problem, plus new emails were coming into my inbox hours late.
I found the solution in different forum.
I did this and everything is working perfectly now.
    1. Quit Mail
    2. Move ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail to desktop
    3. Log out
    4. Log in
    5. Test Mail.app
