Mail is timing out any port I set up

Hi,
I am in a network that has a proxy server. In the beginning I thought, I can't use Mail because of the proxy. So I set up Mozillas Thunderbird and that works just find with sending and receiving e-mail from MobileMe and a Pop3 account.
Than I had a professor over from the US, who was using mail just fine. He has a .mac account and several other pop3 and imap accounts
So here I am, getting frustrated over Mail because I can't get it to work with my accounts.
It says that the Ports are timed out so I tried the other ports suggested on other discussions here, some forums and google. With NO results.
I need to work with Mail because of address book. Thunderbird would not recognize the addresses.
All Proxy Settings are set to the same proxy. I don't use the passive FTP Mode and I have just one bypass in the proxy settings. Maybe that helps.
Thank you

Hi mercury11111,
I am going to change this to Thunderbird, if you are talking about the mail client for the desktop. However if it is Firefox OS, what version are you using (check the Settings > About this device).
Try resetting your profile as well.
See also[http://www.parhelia-tools.com/products/thunderfix/thunderfix.aspx]
I will move this first to see if we can get a specialist in Thunderbird as well.

  • Mail keeps timing out, will not sync emails

i am using mac os X snow leopard. the mail application will not get new email from my gmail account. it says that it is unable to connect, and this message comes up:
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “Gmail” or try again.
The server returned the error: The connection to the server “imap.gmail.com” on port 993 timed out.
    any help?

Accessing a Mail server via a web based interface (say gmail.com) is quite different than using an external email program (like Mail). The most you can infer from being able to login using the web site is that the account is active and that the username / password you are using is correct.
I would suggest taking your computer to a different network connection (ideally an Apple Retail Store as all the required ports will be open on their routers). See if the same issue happens there.
If it does not then we know there is something going on with your network / ISP.
Another option is to login to a new user account on your computer and try that. If it works in a new user but not your main user there are settings files you can try pulling. One step at a time though.

  • Mail keeps timing out

I've been having problems getting my e-mails. My pop box provider said that there is no problems their side and that Mail is timing out before it has connected to their server. I've had a look at changing how long it is until Mail times out, but can't find any way of doing so. Is it possible to change it and how do I do so?
    Thanks
    Lucy

There is no way I know of to change how long it should take for Mail to time-out. What you could do is try to fix whatever may be causing Mail to require so much time to establish a connection to the server.
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list. Try also turning OFF all the network port configurations except the one needed to connect to Internet and see whether that helps — if it doesn’t, turn ON again the ones you want enabled.
Try also using a different method to connect to Internet, if possible, or connecting the computer to Internet as directly as possible, i.e. bypassing any routers that might be present, using an ethernet cable instead of wireless, etc.
Another thing that may cause Mail to time out before the server responds is having too many messages on the server...
BTW, if the version of Mac OS X on the computer where this happens is not the same as appears on your profile, then this is certainly relevant information that you should have provided from the very beginning. I, for example, am not familiarized with Mac OS X 10.2 and didn’t reply to you before just because of that.

  • Connection with mail keeps timing out

Every time I check my mail it times out and I can't recieve mail, but can send it. The error reads "The sever error encountered was: The connection to the server "mail.mac.com" on port 143 timed out"" Anyone understand this?

    any firewalls enabled?
if your email provider supports ssl, you can also try changing port to 993 and enable SSL to see if that allows you to get incoming mail (unde Mail/Preferences/Accounts/Advanced)

  • Mail server timed out

I can receive mail, but cannot send mail.  I use imap with gmail.  I get an error that says something like
CONNECTION TO SERVER "SMTP.GMAIL.COM" ON PORT 25 TIMED OUT.  Can anyone offer some help on this one.  Thanks.

There is a Mail Help article with the exact same title as the error message you’re getting that explains how to solve it.
Many ISPs block port 25 for all traffic outside their own network in an attempt to fight spam. Something that usually works if you’re trying to use an outgoing (SMTP) server different from the one provided by your ISP (and in the case of .Mac in particular) is changing the outgoing server port to 587 instead of 25 in Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Outgoing Mail Server > Server Settings.

  • Syncing keeps timing out any ideas?

Just installed iTunes onto a laptop and the syncing keeps timing out. Any ideas?

This issue occurred in my iMac as well.  I did the following:
    1.  Backed up my data using Time Machine.
    2.  Opened the Mail application on my iMac and entered Preferences.
    3.  I removed the iCloud email account from Mail and closed the Mail application.
    4.  I re-opened the Mail application and added the iCloud email.
The process above seemed to work for me.
    Good luck.

  • I cannot get the updates for ipad to download. when it gets ready to process the file an error message pops up saying the software was unable to download and the network timed out. any suggestions...

i am trying to update the software on my ipad from 4.2 to 4.3.3 but i cannot get it to download. I get an error message that says the software was unable to download because the network timed out.  I have tried to download it 7 or 8 different times and still get the same message.  I cannot restore the factory settings either.  The same thing happens.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  It did this when trying to update to 4.2.  I don't remember how we were able to get the software to update.  Thanks.

Thank you King_Penguin!  It worked beautifully.  I had turned the firewalls off but not the antivirus.  You are great!  I am new to this apple community thing so it looks like I cannot mark your reply as "correct answers", but it was.  Thanks a ton!

  • Timed out session, port 143

Hello! I got some problems with my mail. I have entered everything correctly into Mail but I get only timed out session 143. Nothing more to say really, Thanks in advance, Morgan.

    Ernie,
Weirdly, I checked software update and that can't get a connection either, and yet I have good internet and am receiving and sending mail fine from all accounts.
When i try to move a mail from my works IMAP to a .mac folder, it starts to move it but then the connection speed seems to plummet as though it's being choked somewhere?
I'll try the SSL. is that just on the Incoming or the outgoing or both?

  • My original ipad wont accept iOS? it says"nework timed out" any help?

i update all the software to windows then when it starts to sync the ipad it says "network timed out".. ive tried everything.. really annoying. please help!!

If you've tried turning off all firewall and antivirus software and it still doesn't download, then you could try downloading the iPad iOS update via a browser instead :

  • Try to update my iPhone 4 but after download it says error session timed out any ideas how to fix it

When I try to update my iPhone I get error message session timed out can anyone help

I had the same problem! I don't know what caused it, possibly slow Internet but I suppose my antivirus or other software could have affected it. Maybe it's an iTunes problem.
After restarting the download at least 5 times in iTunes after it timed out, I found this website. I didn't know this before, but you can download the update in your browser and then apply it to your iPhone in iTunes once it finishes. I used Firefox 4 and it downloaded without timing out once. All you have to do is hold down Shift and then click on Update in iTunes and it will prompt you to select the update that you downloaded and it will apply it.
Try this and let me know how it works!

  • Incoming mail is greyed out when attempt to set up mail

I haven't been receiving any .mac mail (on my mac) since yesterday. When I checked the settings, I can see that the incoming mail server information is empty (mail.example.com) and greyed out. I tried deleting that mailbox and re-adding it to no avail. When I try it through system preferences it says it is unable to verify account name and password. However I can log in to itunes, so there's nothing wrong with either account name and password. I can also access my icloud account (including mail) online and using mail on my ipad

Most likely the account type is wrong, .mac or MobileMe no longer works.
If you have a prefpane for either of those two, remove the login info & PW in Sys Prefs.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
        •    Server name: imap.mail.me.com
        •    SSL Required: Yes
        •    Port: 993
        •    Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
        •    Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
        •    Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
        •    SSL Required: Yes
        •    Port: 587
        •    SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
        •    Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
        •    Password: Your iCloud password
Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria:  8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers.  If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message.  Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.

  • Mail Timed Out; Not Receiving New Mail

I deleted about 200 emails while offline. When I went online, Mail wouldn't bring in my new e-mail though I could see it on the MobileMe webmail page. I checked preferences and it said the Mail had 'timed out'. I tried to quit Mail but the 'quit' in the menu bar is no longer highlightable. I rebooted and same problems. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

  • The connection to the server "imapgmail" on Port 143 timed out

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion I am having trouble with mail.  I get the following alert
The server returned the error   The connection to the server "imap.gmail" on Port 143 timed out.
    any help to correct?

and in the column says: Connecting to server…
    My connexion is OK:
I'm posting this reply from the same Mac,

As the rotating wheels were still rotating 2 minutes later,
just to be sure I made a check of what's going on my connection

    isn't doing any connection attempt.
Just to be sure of what my eyes refused to believe,
I just restarted Mail, started a tcpdump and opened the "Mail Connection Doctor".
I see some standard trafic (IPP, http…) but nothing on port 143.
This "Mail Connection Doctor" is plainly lying to me.
Hence my original conclusion seems to stand:
    there's something corrupted within Mail.

  • My e-mails are not sending. "connection to SMTP server timed out." How do I get this working?

As of yesterday, I am receiving e-mails fine; however, unable to send. Everytime I try to send an e-mail, I get "Sending of message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to SMTP server (my mail address) timed out. Try again or contact your network administrator.
I received help from lunarpages (they host my domain); however, they were unable to resolve the issue. They suggested something is blocking IP, or need to update Thunderbird, or there's a firewall there...
    Help!!!
My clients are waiting for responses to e-mails!
    Thank you.

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try one of the following:
*Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
*Restart the operating system in '''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safe_mode safe mode with Networking]'''. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode Windows 8], [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7 Windows 7], [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-vista Windows Vista], [http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx?mfr=true" Windows XP], [http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564 OSX]
; If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.
